MONUMENTS IN THE MAKING
Raising the Great Dolmens in Early Neolithic Northern Europe By Vicki Cummings (University of Central Lancashire) and Colin Richards (University of Manchester)
PREHISTORY
EXPLORING CELTIC ORIGINS
A critical re-appraisal of the dolmen in Britain, Ireland and Scandinavia. Dolmens are iconic international monumental constructions which represent the first megalithic architecture (after menhirs) in north-west Europe. These monuments are characterised by an enormous capstone balanced on top of smaller uprights. However, previous investigations of these extraordinary monuments have focused on three main areas of debate. First, typology has been a dominant feature of discussion, particularly the position of dolmens in the ordering of chambered tombs. Second, attention has been placed not on how they were built but how they were used. Finally, much debate has centred on their visual appearance, and whether they were covered by mounds or cairns.

Barry Cunliffe
This book provides a reappraisal of the ‘dolmen’ as an architectural entity and provides an alternative perspective on function. This is achieved through a re-theorising of the nature of megalithic architecture grounded in the results of a new research/fieldwork project covering Britain, Ireland and Scandinavia. It is argued that instead of understanding dolmen simply as chambered tombs, they were multi-faceted monuments whose construction was as much to do with enchantment and captivation as it was with containing the dead. Consequently, the presence of human remains within dolmens is also critically evaluated and a new interpretation offered. SEA-LEVEL CHANGES IN MESOLITHIC SOUTHERN SCANDINAVIA
Long- and Short-term Effects on Society and the Environment By Peter Moe Astrup Investigates questions related to populations of now-submerged areas. The seabed in southern Scandinavia contains numerous traces of a submerged landscape that is thought to be the remnant of a once important habitat for Mesolithic hunter-gatherers. This book investigates whether coastal sites have not been identified below present-day sea-level, and how sea-level changes may have impacted Mesolithic populations at different temporal and spatial scales. As well as presenting an up-to-date review of various types of evidence, new coastline models are explored and analysed. FARMERS AT THE FRONTIER
A Pan European Perspective on Neolithisation Edited by Kurt J. Gron (University of Durham), Lasse Sorensen (Aarhus University) and Peter Rowley-Conwy (University of Durham) Addresses the question of what the earliest farming was really like. A detailed understanding of all aspects of farming in its absolute earliest form in various regions of Europe can potentially provide a new perspective on the mechanisms by which this monumental change comes to human societies and regions. This volume collects various perspectives regarding the earliest farming from across Europe. Methodological approaches, archaeological cultures, and geographic locations in Europe are variable, but all papers engage with the simple question: What was the earliest farming like?

UNE MAISON SOUS LES DUNES: BEG AR LOUED, ÎLE MOLÈNE, FINISTÈRE
Identité et adaptation des groupes humains en mer d’Iroise entre les IIIe et IIe millénaires avant notre ère Edited by Yvan Pailler (French National Institute for Rescue Archaeology) and Clément Nicolas (UMR 8215-Trajectoires). Results of excavations of a Neolithic stone-built house off the coast of Brittany, France. Since 2001, archaeological research has been conducted in the Molène Archipelago. The data obtained from this fieldwork provide information on the chronology of the various periods of occupation, and help to document the 3rd–2nd millennium BC transition, a period still largely unknown in the northern half of France. It is possible to sketch the lifestyle of the people who occupied the shores of the Iroise Sea. Text in French. MAKING A MARK
Image and Process in Neolithic Britain and Ireland By Andrew Meirion Jones (University of Southampton) and Marta Díaz-Guardamino (University of Cardiff)
PREHISTORY
EXPLORING CELTIC ORIGINS
Uses cutting edge digital imaging techniques to examine significance of marks on decorated artefacts. The visual imagery of Neolithic Britain and Ireland is spectacular. While the imagery of passage tombs, such as Knowth and Newgrange, are well known the rich imagery on decorated portable artefacts is less well understood. How does the visual imagery found on decorated portable artefacts compare with other Neolithic imagery, such as passage tomb art and rock art? How do decorated portable artefacts relate chronologically to other examples of Neolithic imagery?

FIRST FARMERS OF THE CARPATHIAN BASIN
Changing Patterns in Subsistence, Ritual and Monumental Figurines By Eszter Bánffy (German Archaeological Institute)
Explores Neolithic cultural change through analysis of monumental clay figurines. In this fascinating new study, Eszter Bánffy takes a holistic approach to the definition of monumental early Neolithic clay figurines, analogies over Southeast Europe, and the reconstruction of rituals involved in the making and using of figurines. She reviews a broad scope of environmental and (social) zooarchaeological analyses to examine the concomitant development and significance of early dairying. The target is to present one possible narrative on the fading of the South-east European ’clayscapes‘, towards the birth of the LBK and the Central European Neolithic. The Bell Beaker Phenomenon from a Domestic Perspective Edited by Alex M. Gibson
The Bell Beaker Settlement of Europe
The first comprehensive, Europe-wide review of evidence for Bell Beaker settlement.
8 Prehistoric Society Research Paper 8
European studies of the Bell Beaker phenomenon have concentrated on burial and artefacts that constitute its most visible aspects. This volume concentrates on the domestic sphere – assemblage composition, domestic structures (how they differ, if at all, from previous types, legacies), and provides the first pan-European synthesis of its kind. It is a Europe-wide survey and analysis of Bell Beaker settlement structures; this is particularly important as we cannot understand the Bell Beaker phenomenon by analysing graves alone.

MINING AND QUARRYING IN NEOLITHIC EUROPE
The aim of this volume is to explore new findings on extraction sites and their products. How did the acquisition of raw materials fit into other aspects of Neolithic life and social networks? How did these activities merge in creating material items that underpinned cosmology, status and identity? What are the geographic similarities, constraints and variables between the various raw materials, and how does the practise of stone extraction in the UK relate to wider extractive traditions in northwestern Europe?

DEATH REVISITED
The excavation of three Bronze Age barrows and surrounding landscape at Apeldoorn-Wieselseweg By Arjan Louwen (University of Leiden) and Prof. Dr. David Fontijn (University of Leiden) Results of the excavation of three Middle Bronze Age barrows in the Netherlands. This book presents a group of small and inconspicuous barrows that were recently discovered in the forest of Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. They are part of an extensive barrow landscape of which little was yet known. Fieldwork carried out in and around them yielded a wealth of new data. It was discovered that even the most inconspicuous and heavily damaged mound of this group still contained many special features. THE SELHURST PARK PROJECT
Excavations at Middle Barn, Selhurstpark Farm, Eartham, West Sussex 2005–2008 By George Anelay (West Sussex Archaeology) Results of the excavation of a Middle-Late Iron Age farmstead and its enclosures. Excavations at Middle Barn, Selhurst Park, Eartham uncovered a Middle Iron Age to early Roman farmstead, sitting upon the southern slopes of the South Downs in West Sussex, and overlooking the Sussex coastal plain. While the structural remains were unremarkable for a site of this type, the recovered artefact assemblages were substantial and important. The resulting wealth of new evidence relating to Iron Age and Roman occupation reveals much about the interrelation of the Downs to the north, and the coastal plain below. ENCLOSING SPACE, OPENING NEW GROUND
New approaches to understanding how and why Iron Age communities in Europe enclosed space. Enclosures are among the most widely distributed features of the European Iron Age. From fortifications to field systems, they demarcate territories and settlements, sanctuaries and central places, burials and ancestral grounds. This dividing of the physical and the mental landscape between an ‘inside’ and an ‘outside’ is investigated anew in a series of essays by some of the leading scholars on the topic. Part 1 begins with an outline of the acquisition history of the Egyptian collection and its display within Norwich Castle in 1894, when it was converted from a prison to a museum. The collection was largely acquired between the nineteenth and first part of the twentieth centuries. Its most prominent donor was Flaxman Spurrell, whose varied collection. Also included are essays on several of the museum’s outstanding items – Ipu’s shroud, a rare early 18th Dynasty example with fragments also held in Cairo; the 22nd Dynasty finely decorated and well-preserved cartonnage and wooden lid of the priest, Ankh-hor, and the exceptional model granary of Nile clay painted with lively scenes, one showing the owner, Intef, playing senet.
Part 2 is a detailed catalogue of the complete collection. It is organised into sections with objects grouped together mainly according to type—stelae, shabtis, scarabs, jewellery, amulets, vessels, flints, lamps, inscribed Book of the Dead fragments, metal figurines, and Late Antique cloths—and also according to function, such as cosmetics and grooming, and architectural and furniture elements. The inscribed materials have all been translated and individual entries give examples or parallels. Colour plates illustrate each object.

ΟΙΝΟΣ: Production and Import of Wine in Graeco-Roman Egypt By Dorota Dzierzbicka Investigates the role of local and imported wines on the Egyptian market in the Graeco-Roman period. To study the supply of wine and its economic role, two topics must be considered: local production, and import of foreign vintages. In this book, the part devoted to Egyptian wine seeks to establish where and how wine was manufactured, the social base for this industry, and the kinds of wine were locally produced in Egypt, as well as its patterns of distribution. The aim of the part devoted to import is to try to determine which foreign wines reached Egypt during the Graeco-Roman period. THE ARCHAIC PERIOD
Chalkis Aetolias II By Sanne Houby-Nielsen and Edited by Søren Houby-Nielsen Richly illustrated catalogue of excavations of Homeric Chalkis. Homeric Chalkis is situated on the coast of Aetolia at the very ‘gateway’ of the Gulf of Patras. Excavations revealed well-preserved stratigraphies, a broad spectrum of pottery and wares, as well as tools for complex textile manufacture. The results offer important new evidence on how courtyard houses were specifically suited to manufacture, as well as relations between gender behaviour and Greek houses. The catalogue is richly illustrated with profile drawings, plans, black-and- white and colour photos and accompanied by discussions of the material.

Archaeology and History By Thomas Fischer and M. C. Bishop
A major overview of the imperial Roman army: its soldiers, weapons, equipment and history. Compared to modern standard, the Roman army of the imperial era was surprisingly small. However, when assessed in terms of their various tasks, they by far outstrip modern armies – acting not only as an armed power of the state in external and internal conflicts, but also carrying out functions which nowadays are performed by police, local government, customs and tax authorities, as well as constructing roads, ships, and buildings.
ROME & THE ROMAN PROVINCES
ARMY OF THE ROMAN EMPERORS
With this opulent volume, Thomas Fischer presents a comprehensive and unique exploration of the Roman military of the imperial era. With over 600 illustrations, the costumes, weapons and equipment of the Roman army are explored in Oxbow Books • April 2019 • 9781789251845 detail using archaeological finds dating from the £45.00 • Hardback • 280 x 216mm • 496 pages late Republic to Late Antiquity, and from all over 574 colour & black and white images the Roman Empire. The buildings and fortifications associated with the Roman army are also discussed. By comparing conflicts, border security, weaponry and artefacts, the development of the army through time is traced. This work is intended for experts as well as to readers with a general interest in Roman history. It is also a treasure-trove for re-enactment groups, as it puts many common perceptions of the weaponry, equipment and dress of the Roman army to the test.

JULIUS CAESAR’S BATTLE FOR GAUL
New Archaeological Perspectives Edited by Andrew P. Fitzpatrick (University of Leicester) and Colin Haselgrove (University of Leicester) The latest archaeological research on the Battle for Gaul and its aftermath. Roman historians have little to say on the consequences of the war on the Iron Age communities of north-west Europe. Their story is told instead by archaeology and numismatics. This book presents the latest archaeological research on the Battle for Gaul and its aftermath. It is the first Europe-wide overview and much of the research is published here in English for the first time. After an introduction to recent trends in historical studies, thematic studies and regional surveys analyse the archaeological and numismatic evidence from across north-west Europe. ROADS IN THE DESERTS OF ROMAN EGYPT
By Maciej Paprocki (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) Uses archaeological evidence to assess how desert roads evolved in Roman Egypt. Using archaeology, satellite imaging, landscape studies, and network analysis, this book examines evidence for desert roads in Roman Egypt, and assesses Roman influence on the road density in two select desert areas: the central and southern section of the Eastern Desert and the central Marmarican Plateau. It discusses geographical and social factors influencing road use in the period, demonstrating that Roman overseers of these lands adapted remarkably well to local desert conditions, improving roads and developing the trail network.

Posthuman Perspectives in Roman archaeology Edited by Irene Selsvold (University of Gothenburg) and Lewis Webb (Umeå University) Explores post-humanist approaches to re-examine Roman material culture. This volume takes up posthuman theoretical perspectives to interpret Roman material culture. These perspectives provide novel and compelling ways of grappling with theoretical problems in Roman archaeology, producing new knowledge and questions about the complex relationships and interactions between humans and non-humans in Roman culture and society. This is the first volume on these themes in Roman Archaeology, aimed at providing valuable perspectives into Roman myth, art and material culture, displacing and complicating notions of human exceptionalism and individualist subjectivity. INTERPRETING MEDIEVAL EFFIGIES The Evidence from Yorkshire to 1400 By Brian Gittos and Moira Gittos
A detailed examination of surviving monumental effigies from northern medieval Britain. This innovative study examines and analyses the wealth of evidence provided by the monumental effigies of Yorkshire, from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, including some of very high sculptural merit. More than 200 examples survive from the historic county in varying states of preservation. Together, they present a picture of the people able to afford them, at a time when the county was frequently at the forefront of national politics and administration, during the Scottish wars. The text is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue, making available a substantial body of research for the first time. Articles on the social and economic aspects of Maltese life in late Medieval Malta. This is Prof. Godfrey Wettinger’s unfinished project; completed posthumously in celebration of Wettinger as the recipient of the National Book Prize “Lifetime Achievement Award” for 2014. Wettinger, who was one of Malta’s foremost Medieval historians, was quite aware of the lack of studies on social and economic aspects in Medieval studies and his wish to collect these articles into one book will in a way serve future historians as a new window from which to access and even address this historiographic gap.

REINVENTING SUSTAINABILITY
How Archaeology Can Save the Planet By Erika Guttmann-Bond (University of Wales) Discusses the potential for the reintroduction of ancient technologies to create a healthier, more sustainable planet. This book is about sustainable agriculture and architecture in the past, and the engineering works that supported them, but it also looks to the future. Ancient technologies are often simple, low in cost, and depend on local materials – and significantly, don’t require fossil fuels. This book explores what we in the West can learn from the past to create a healthier, more sustainable and environmentally richer planet.

PAST LANDSCAPES
The Dynamics of Interaction between Society, Landscape, and Culture Edited by Annette Haug (University of Kiel), Lutz Käppel (University of Kiel) and Johannes Müller (University of Kiel) Multi-faceted theories, concepts and practices on past landscapes. Landscapes are understood as products of human-environmental interaction. At the same time, they are arenas, in which societal and cultural activities as well as receptions of environments and human developments take place. This book presents theories, concepts, approaches and case studies dealing with human development in landscapes, showing that only an interdisciplinary approach can cover the manifold aspects of the topic. On the other hand, it also implies that the very different approaches cannot be reduced to a simplistic uniform definition of landscape. Towards a high-definition archaeology Edited by Rubina Raja and Søren Raja Reviews new archaeological approaches to urban evolution. This book compares the medieval Northern European archaeology of urbanism to the archaeology of the Ancient Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean World. The 40 contributions in this book demonstrate how new techniques for refining archaeological dates and contexts, and the the provenance ascribed to material culture, afford a new high-definition approach to the study of global and interregional dynamics. This opens up for far-reaching questions as to how and to what extent urban networks catalysed societal and environmental expansions and crises in the past.

Construction of the Abberton pipeline has provided the first opportunity for a major excavation within a Roman small town in Suffolk for more than 20 years. A much clearer history of the town has begun to emerge as a result of the fieldwalking, geophysical survey, evaluation and excavation undertaken in advance of the pipeline project. This work has shown that Wixoe was a post-Boudican planned town probably established at a similar time to several others in the region.

FRESHWATER FISH IN ENGLAND
A Social and Cultural History of Coarse Fish from Prehistory to the Present Day By Alison Locker Charts the exploitation of native freshwater fish by man through archaeological and artistic evidence. From earliest times we have had a changing relationship with freshwater fish, specifically the non-migratory species such as pike, perch and the cyprinids discussed in this book. Through evidence from archaeology, landscape, documents, and art, the evolution of English culture can be seen to have influenced our attitude to these fish. Once lauded as a high table treat, they were to become reviled, long surpassed by marine fish and the English love of meat; this book follows the development of these attitudes. GILL MILL
Later Prehistoric Landscape and a Roman Nucleated Settlement in the Lower Windrush Valley at Gill Mill, near Witney, Oxfordshire By Paul Booth and Andrew Simmonds Reports on results of excavations at Gill Mill quarry, Oxfordshire. The valley floodplain landscape covered by the Gill Mill quarry, almost 130ha, was intensively exploited from about 300 BC at a variety of Iron Age settlements. The largest of these remained in occupation into the early 3rd century AD, but meanwhile a large nucleated settlement grew up around a road junction roughly 1km distant to the north-west. This book examines the evidence from excavations in the area.

The South-eastern Extramural Settlement of Roman Alchester and Rural Occupation in its Hinterland: The Archaeology of East West Rail Phase 1 By Andrew Simmonds and Steve Lawrence Reports on excavations in the area of Alchester, Oxfordshire. Excavations by Oxford Archaeology in advance of a programme of improvements to the railway between Bicester and Oxford investigated part of the south-eastern extramural settlement associated with the Roman fortress and subsequent town at Alchester, Oxfordshire, as well as rural settlements in its hinterland. An insight into the diverse lives of the inhabitants is provided by finds that included part of a priestly headdress, two pairs of slave shackles and a group of roof tiles bearing the footprints of a young child.

CHALK HILL
Neolithic and Bronze Age discoveries at Ramsgate, Kent By Peter Clark, Grant Shand and Jake Weekes A critical report for understanding the early Neolithisation of southern Britain. Excavations at Chalk Hill, Ramsgate in south-eastern Britain were primarily aimed at investigating the remains of a possible early Neolithic causewayed enclosure visible on aerial photographs. However, the monument could not in fact be categorised as a causewayed enclosure, but instead represented a type of early Neolithic ritual monument unique to the British Isles. The site and this report therefore contributes a more nuanced understanding of the heterogeneity of monumental architecture in the early Neolithic of the British Isles. A RIVERINE SITE NEAR YORK
A Possible Viking Camp? Edited by Gareth Williams (British Museum) Detailed publication of the Viking camp discovered at a location known as ‘A Riverine Site Near York’. The location known as ‘A Riverine Site Near York (ARSNY)’ represents a category of Viking site known from the historical record but largely undetected archaeologically: the Viking camp. Its discovery and investigation has revolutionised understanding of the size and character of such sites, with wider implications for the aspects of Viking warfare, urbanisation, precious metal economies and the transition from raiding to permanent settlement. This is the detailed publication of the site, along with the first detailed comparison and wider significance. CERAMIC EXCHANGE AND INDIAN OCEAN ECONOMY (AD 400–1275) By Seth M.N. Priestman
Documents the unique significance of ceramic finds as an indicator of long-term changes in the scale of maritime exchange. From AD 500–1000, the Indian Ocean emerged as a global commercial centre, and by around 750–800 a sophisticated trade network had been established. However, the Indian Ocean’s commercial system has been relatively understudied. This study sets out the case for the unique significance of quantified ceramic finds as an indicator of long-term changes in the scale and volume of maritime exchange in a period for which few other sources of systematic economic history survive.

TRANSFER BETWEEN SEA AND LAND
Maritime Vessels for Cultural Exchanges in the Early Modern Period Edited by Simone Kahlow A new approach to questions of cultural exchange of knowledge and material goods. Questions about the cultural exchange of both knowledge and material goods are just as topical today as in years gone by. These questions have gained increasing attention from scholars since the 1980s when the term ‘transfers cultures’ by historians arose. However, this book provides a completely new approach in this context by interdisciplinary investigation of cultural exchanges based on chosen objects from shipwrecks and land, significant written documents and verifiable transfer of knowledge. MUSEUM, MAGIC, MEMORY Curating Paul Denys Montague By Julie Adams (British Museum)
Reveals and responds to the challenges that curators today must embrace when exhibiting the ethnographic collections. In 2012, a chance encounter between a curator and a century-old expedition journal occurred in the archives of a Cambridge museum. The journal was written by a young anthropologist, Paul Denys Montague, recording his travels in the South Pacific Islands of New Caledonia in 1914. Montague’s research and collection had been untouched for a century. Their rediscovery brought these materials and the histories they contained to new life. This book explores the complex encounters between history, biography, museology and collecting.

Marquesan Art and the Krusenstern expedition By William Metcalf A virtual reconstruction of the 1804 collection of artefacts from Nuku Hiva made by the Krusenstern expedition. Created across the six islands of a remote archipelago in eastern Polynesia, the art of the Marquesas is one of the world’s most distinctive and remarkable art traditions. Though exhibited in major museums around the world, Marquesan art is nevertheless poorly understood, and the formation of collections still largely unresearched. This book documents and explores the most extensive early collection from the archipelago. A set of essays contextualise these precisely-provenanced artefacts historically, and in the life and environment of the Marquesas Islands. Volume I: Italian and Byzantine Miniatures By Gaudenz Freuler Explores an outstanding collection of leaves and miniatures from medieval manuscripts. This handsomely produced publication is the first of a two-volume set exploring an outstanding collection of leaves and miniatures from medieval manuscripts. Brimming with beautiful illustrations, this welcome contribution to medieval scholarship covers a period from the late 9th to the late 15th centuries and incorporates new discoveries in this still growing field. The focus on late 13th- and early 14th-century illumination in the collection demonstrates McCarthy’s predilection for the medieval and early Gothic world.

IMPRINT OF ACTION
The Sociocultural Impact of Public Activities in Archaeology By Boom Krijn H.J. Demonstrates the sociocultural impact of public activities in archaeology. Cultural heritage, which includes archaeology, is recognised as serving an increasingly important role in European societal development. But what exactly is the relevance of archaeology to present day citizens? Imprint of Action investigates the sociocultural impact of archaeology through public activities. The analysis and interpretation of case studies is based on a newly created methodological framework which finds its roots in the broader culture and arts sector. It lays the foundations for further analysis of the societal impact of both large-scale and small-scale heritage projects. HISTORICAL LITERATURE & CRITICISM
THE ALEXANDER ROMANCE: HISTORY AND LITERATURE
Edited by Krzysztof Nawotka, Richard Stoneman (University of Exeter) and Agnieszka Wojciechowska A collection of papers on the nature of the Alexander Romance. The Alexander Romance is a difficult text to define and to assess justly. This volume faces the challenge of defining the Alexander Romance. It forms a cohesive set of approaches to the delicate positioning of the text between history and literature. From its earliest elements in Hellenistic Egypt, to its latest reworkings in the Byzantine and Islamic Middle East, the Alexander Romance shows itself to be a work that steadily engages with such questions as kingship, the limits of human nature, and the purpose of history.

Definitively covers all known types of coinage from the reigns of Ptolemy I–IV. This is a massive, long-anticipated catalogue of coins struck by the first four Ptolemaic kings. DAKṢIṆA KOSALA
A Rich Centre of Early Śaivism By Natasja Bosma Deals with the early development of Śaivism in ancient Daksina Kosala. This book deals with the early development of Śaivism in ancient Daksina Kosala, the region that roughly corresponds to the modern state of Chhattisgarh. Epigraphical evidence, supported by archaeological remains, has shown that by the time of Śivagupta’s reign, which lasted for at least fifty-seven years, Daksina Kosala was already a rich centre of early Śaivism. The book attempts to answer questions that would shed light on the religious processes at work, and touch upon the interplay of political, social, economic and geographical factors. MOONSHINERS AND PROHIBITIONISTS
The Battle over Alcohol in Southern Appalachia By Bruce E. Stewart Examines social, cultural and economic impacts of homemade liquor in Appalachian history. Homemade liquor has played a prominent role in the Appalachian economy for nearly two centuries. This book chronicles the social tensions that accompanied the region’s early transition from a rural to an urban-industrial economy, and analyses the dynamic relationship of the bootleggers and opponents of liquor sales in western North Carolina, as well as conflict driven by social and economic development that manifested in political discord. It also explores the life of the moonshiner and the many myths that developed around hillbilly stereotypes. ELKHORN

When former Kentucky Poet Laureate Richard Taylor took a job at Kentucky State University in 1975, he purchased the historic Giltner-Holt House, which sits close by the Elkhorn Creek. It became the poet’s entrance into the area’s history and culture, and the Elkhorn became a source of inspiration for his writing. Here, Taylor provides a glimpse into the economic, social, and cultural transformation of Kentucky from wilderness to its current landscape, exploring both the natural history of the region and the formation of the Forks community. The history of Appalachia’s ‘poverty warriors’ and their impact on social activism. Reformers to Radicals: The Appalachian Volunteers and the War on Poverty documents the history of an organisation whose youthful enthusiasm led to radicalism and controversy in an era of flourishing social activism. It chronicles a critical era in Appalachian history, while also investigating the impact the 1960s’ reform attitude had on the broader movement in the United States. Kiffmeyer revisits an era in which idealistic young Americans, spurred on by President Kennedy’s call to action, set out to remake America.

ROGER FRY AND ITALIAN ART By Caroline Elam
A revelatory examination of Roger Fry’s fascinating but relatively little-known writings on Italian art. Roger Fry (1866–1934) is best known as a champion of Post-Impressionism and a pioneer of Modernist art criticism. But his first love was early Italian painting. Apart from a famous article on Giotto which Fry republished in Vision and Design (1920), the writings on Italian art are relatively little known, and a selection of the best of them is republished here, thus introducing an important aspect of Fry’s many-sided work to a new audience.

SUNNINESS IN PAINTING
From Edward Hopper to David Hockney By Nicola Vitale Builds an argument in favour of tracing a different path for the visual arts. This essay builds an argument in favour of tracing a new and different path for the visual arts, in which art might be able to recover its fullness and universality. As in the art of Ancient Greece or the Middle Ages, abstract tensions that intensify the visual field can bring simple figures to life, radically changing their meaning. This is a “sunniness” which requires tireless exercising of our perceptions, if we wish to be able to grasp its basic aesthetic quality.

GUILLAUME JEAN CONSTANTIN (1755–1816) A Drawings Dealer in Paris By Joachim Jacoby
Traces the career of the influential Paris art dealer Guillaume Jean Constantin (1755-1816). In the course of the 18th century, drawings by old and contemporary masters became an esteemed collectors’ item and, in consequence, a highly valued commodity of the art market. This study looks at this business from the perspective of the art dealer Guillaume Jean Constantin (1755-1816), who was active in Paris during the last quarter of the 18th and the first years of the 19th century. Constantin’s transactions are reconstructed on the evidence of his dealer’s mark applied to drawings – here identified for the first time – and unpublished material drawn from archives in Paris. His dealership in drawings is analysed with a focus on his business network within France and his far-reaching contacts, which also covered other regions of Europe, including England, Italy, Germany and Russia.

THE FONDATION CUSTODIA STUDIES IN THE HISTORY OF ART
‘THE MOST PROMINENT DUTCHMAN IN EGYPT’
Jan Herman Insinger and the Egyptian collection in Leiden By Maarten J. Raven Focuses on J.H. Insinger (1854-1918) as a collector of Ancient Egyptian art. Jan Herman Insinger was a well-known character in the history of Egyptology, mainly because his name has been linked forever with a famous demotic wisdom papyrus now in Leiden. Although he is mentioned by many of his contemporaries, biographical notes on Insinger rarely surpass a few lines and can be quite inaccurate. However, a lot of information can be gathered from the Archives of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden and other sources, both published and unpublished. These documents enable us to sketch a brief biography of this fascinating figure. Former studies by the present author dealt with Insinger’s activities as a photographer and a traveller. The present volume focuses on Insinger’s activities as an art collector.

SOUTHERN HISTORY ON SCREEN Race and Rights, 1976-2016 Edited by Bryan M. Jack
Explores the intersection between film, historical memory, and southern identity. Hollywood films have been influential in the portrayal and representation of race relations in the South and how African-Americans are cinematically depicted in history, from The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Gone with the Wind (1939) to The Help (2011) and 12 Years a Slave (2013). Bryan Jack brings together essays from an international roster of scholars to provide new critical perspectives on Hollywood’s relationships between historical films, Southern history, identity, and the portrayal of Jim Crow–era segregation.

CRIME FICTION IN THE GLOBAL ERA
Edited by Christiana Gregoriou (University of Leeds), Gigliola Sulis (University of Leeds) and David Platten (University of Leeds) An examination of crime fiction as a vehicle of cultural exchange. Crime fiction has acquired a global reach, illuminating different corners of the world and spreading through the use of various cultural media. Crime fiction has thus become a vehicle for cultural exchange in the broadest of senses – but what is involved in these processes of transference? Do stories lose or gain value? Are they transformed into something else altogether? This collection responds to these questions and more, by adopting a truly interdisciplinary approach, spanning from literary criticism and philosophy through translation studies to transmediality.

SIZE
At the end of the last century, the so-called “new technologies” started to question the process of design, production, sales and consumption. The notion of “size” has gone through a phase of crisis from which it is now re-emerging, enriched with new meanings and possibilities. To re-define this complex term, this book has observed the path of audiovisual products and social media, fashion, everyday objects, architectures and cities, and identified in each elements of continuity, breaking points with the past, and future alternatives. How do traumatic experiences from past events and catastrophic projections of the future reveal the human condition in the epoch of frenetic technological reproduction of works of art? Nineteen essays address these questions to argue that modern and contemporary literary texts and visual arts show how photography, film, tape recording, television, and internet are not just means of storing memory, but objects that we interact with daily - challenging static visions of places and the linear notions of past, present and future.

PRAGMATISM AND VAGUENESS
The Venetian Lectures By Claudine Tiercelin (Collège de France) and Edited by Giovanni Tuzet (Bocconi University) A rich overview on the concept of ‘vagueness’ in the philosophical current of Pragmatism. For most early pragmatists, including the founder C.S. Peirce and L. Wittgenstein, vagueness was a real and universal principle and not a mere defect of our knowledge or thought. This volume begins by exploring this pragmatist notion of vagueness and the way it was tied to their basic opposition to various kinds of reductionism and nominalism. It then develops towards an analysis of Peirce’s original and wide views on vagueness, as seen through the angles of logic, semiotics, epistemology and metaphysics. Drawing on a wealth of published and unpublished material, Stefano Pippa discusses how Althusser’s unfaltering commitment to contingency should encourage us to revisit our understanding of his conceptions of structural change, ideology, politics and materialism.

Essays on the Relationship Between Humans and Nature By Strachan Donnelley, edited by Ceara Donnelley and Bruce Jennings, with a foreword by Frederick Kirschenmann Examines Strachan Donnelley as a philosopher, naturalist, agitator, and spiritualist. CULTURE OF THE LAND
AGE
By Suresh Rattan A philosophical examination of age and ageing. Suresh Rattan’s birth certificate reads “1955”. At his age, signs of decline inevitably creep in, but Suresh doesn’t feel that old. In fact, he feels 20 years younger. But thanks to evolution, we can’t imagine ourselves any older than 45. Biologically, we should just give up the ghost once we’ve raised a few carbon copies of ourselves. But for those of us who want to stick around a little longer, Suresh has devised a formula for eternal life. Let’s hope it works.

By Joseph M. Pirotta
Examines Malta’s transformation from British colony to Sovereign State. In his four-volume study, Pirotta meticulously examines Malta’s twenty-year transformation from Britain’s foremost Mediterranean fortress colony to sovereign State. Acclaimed for its heroic resistance to fascism during the Second World War that ostensibly bound it closer to its imperial masters, the over-populated, physically wrecked Island, bereft of resources, joined the ranks of independent states in 1964. To examine the why and the how of this transformation Pirotta delved through voluminous Maltese and British documents, local and foreign archives and interviewed numerous key personalities. FORTRESS COLONY: THE FINAL ACT 1964-1968 - VOL 4: 1962-1968 By Joseph M. Pirotta
Examines Malta’s transformation from British colony to Sovereign State. The fourth volume in this in-depth study covers the period of 1962-1968, examining the complicated power game played by party, church and trade union leaders in Malta. It reveals much of what went on behind the scenes of Malta’s transformation, as the efforts of the Maltese to economically rehabilitate the Maltese islands and to fulfil deep-rooted aspirations to be masters of their own home inevitably clashed with Britain’s concept of Malta as a strategic fortress colony.

THE BIRMINGHAM POLITICAL MACHINE Winning elections for Joseph Chamberlain By Andrew Reekes
The first full study of Joseph Chamberlain’s electioneering methods. The British electorate swelled dramatically with the passing of the Second Reform Act in 1867. In Birmingham, Joseph Chamberlain and his allies were faced with an electorate which had tripled in size overnight and many of whom had never previously voted or participated in politics. For the first time, this book lays bare how Joseph Chamberlain was so successful that never before or since has one politician monopolised regional power as Joseph Chamberlain did for more than thirty years in the West Midlands.

MORE THAN MUNICH
The Forgotten Legacy of Neville Chamberlain By Andrew Reekes Looks beyond Chamberlain’s vilification to explore his life and achievements. In 1938 rapturous crowds greeted Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain when he proclaimed “Peace for our time” on his return from meeting Adolf Hitler in Munich. Yet today Chamberlain is vilified as a naïve appeaser – an image cynically cultivated by Winston Churchill for his own political gain. What is the truth? How should Birmingham’s only Prime Minister be accurately remembered? Historian and author Andrew Reekes challenges us to look beyond the stereotype of Neville Chamberlain “the appeaser” to the real man and his achievements. A POLITICAL COMPANION TO FREDERICK DOUGLASS Edited by Neil Roberts
Contributions exploring the work and impact of Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass (1818—1895) was a prolific writer and public speaker whose impact on American literature and history has been long studied by historians and literary critics. Yet his influence on Afro-modern and American political thought has often been undervalued. In an effort to fill this gap in the scholarship, this book examines the author’s autobiographies, essays, speeches, and novella. Together, they illuminate his genius for analysing and articulating core American ideals, particularly in the context of slavery.

Unfolding the Black Flag in History, Memory, and Myth Edited by Joseph M. Beilein and Matthew C. Hulbert A comprehensive examination of the guerrilla soldier and his role in the deadliest war in U.S. history. Most Americans are familiar with major Civil War battles such as Manassas (Bull Run), Shiloh, and Gettysburg, which have been extensively analysed by generations of historians. However, not all of the war’s engagements were fought in a conventional manner by regular forces. Often referred to as “the wars within the war,” guerrilla combat touched states from Virginia to New Mexico. This richly diverse volume assembles a team of both rising and eminent scholars to examine guerrilla warfare in the South during the Civil War.

Patton’s day-by-day situational understanding of the Battle of the Bulge gives readers an in-depth, critical analysis of Patton’s overall effectiveness, measured in terms of mission accomplishment, his ability to gain and hold ground, and a cost-benefit analysis of his operations relative to the lives of his soldiers.

The Story of the American Battle Monuments Commission By Thomas H. Conner The first comprehensive study of the American Battle Monuments Commission. This first comprehensive study of the American Battle Monuments Commission traces how the agency came to be created by Congress in the aftermath of World War I, how the cemeteries and monuments the agency built were designed and their locations chosen, and how the commemorative sites have become important “outposts of remembrance” on foreign soil. It powerfully demonstrates that these monuments assist in understanding the interconnections of memory and history and serve as an inspiration to later generations. JUST WAR RECONSIDERED
Strategy, Ethics, and Theory By James M. Dubik with a foreword by Martin Dempsey A new take on military ethics, founded on years of research. This book applies moral philosophy, political philosophy, and strategic studies to historical and contemporary case studies to reveal the inaccuracies and moral bankruptcy that inform some of the literature on military ethics. Based on the fundamental truth that war risks the lives of soldiers and innocents, it offers new standards to evaluate the ethics of warfare in the hope of increasing the probability that the lives of soldiers will not be used in vain and the innocent not put at risk unnecessarily.

The ever-present spectre of conflict has made it an enduring topic of interest in popular culture, and many movies have sought to show the complexities and horrors of war on-screen. In The Philosophy of War Films, David LaRocca compiles a series of essays by prominent scholars that examine the impact of representing war in film and the influence that cinematic images of battle have on human consciousness, belief, and action.
