Alan Brooke: Churchill's RightHand Critic A Reappraisal of Lord Alanbrooke By Andrew Sangster A new biography of Lord Alanbrooke, following his life from childhood through to his role as Chief Imperial of the General Staff, shaping Allied strategy in World War II.
Lord Alanbrooke was Churchill's right-hand man during World War II, and as Chief of the Imperial General Staff he had an integral part in shaping the strategy of Britain and the Allies. Despite this crucial role, he is very little known compared to military commanders such as Montgomery, Alexander, Slim, Mountbatten, Patton, or Eisenhower. This new biography of Lord Alanbrooke uses archival material and his diaries to trace his life, including his experiences in World War I and the development of his military career in the interwar years, with a focus on his post as the Chief of the Imperial General Staff during World War II. Voted the greatest Briton of the 20th century, Churchill has long been credited with almost singlehandedly leading his country to victory in World War II. However without Brooke, a skilled tactician, at his side the outcome might well have been disastrous. Brooke more often than not served as a brake on some of Churchill's more impetuous ideas. However, while Brooke's diaries reveal his fury with some of Churchill's decisions, they also reveal his respect and admiration for the wartime prime minister. In return Churchill must surely have considered Brooke one of his most difficult subordinates but later wrote that he was "fearless, formidable, articulate, and in the end convincing". As CIGS, Brooke was integral to coordination between the Allied forces, and so had to wrestle with the cultural strategy clash between the British and Americans. Comments in his diaries offer up his opinions of both his British and American military colleagues – his negative assessments of Mountbatten's ability, and acerbic comments on the difficult character of de Gaulle and the weaknesses of Eisenhower. Conversely he was clearly over-indulgent in the face of Montgomery's foibles. Brooke was often seen as a stern and humourless figure, but a study of his private life reveals a little-seen lighter side, a lifelong passion for birdwatching, and abiding love for his family. The two tragedies that befell his immediate family were a critical influence on his life. Dr Andrew Sangster is a Bishop's Officer who has had 16 books published and he is a contributor to history magazines. His doctorate is in Modern European History, and he holds other degrees in history, English, law and divinity. Medieval Military Combat Battle Tactics and Fighting Techniques of the Wars of the Roses By Tom Lewis Shows for the first time the battle techniques of the medieval period and reexamines the sources for battle numbers.
We don't know how medieval soldiers fought. Did they just walk forward in their armour, to smash each other with their maces and poleaxes, for hours on end, as depicted on film in programs such as Game of Thrones? They could not have done so. It is impossible to fight in such a manner for more than several minutes as exhaustion becomes a preventative factor. So how did medieval soldiers in the War of the Roses, and in the infantry sections of battles such as Agincourt and Towton, carry out their grim work? Medieval Military Combat shows, for the first time, the techniques of such battles. It also breaks new ground in establishing medieval battle numbers as highly exaggerated, and that we need to look again at the accounts of actions such as the famous Battle of Towton, which this work uses as a basic for its overall study. Included is a clear analysis for the different types of soldier: bowmen, swordsmen, spearmen, and plated men-at-arms. This book is a concise and entertaining explanation of how exactly close combat in battles during the Wars of the Roses was carried out, and shows how other accounts, and popular culture such as films, have mis-represented medieval warfare. Dr Tom Lewis is one of Australia's foremost military historians, a former naval officer and author of 14 books. He is a resident of Darwin and teaches secondary school history. After the Wall Came Down The British Army and its Soldiers After the Cold War By Andrew Richards A history of the British Army since the end of the Cold War, incorporating many firsthand accounts.
The generation of young men and women who joined the British Army during the mid to late 1980s would serve their country during an unprecedented period of history. Unlike the two world war generations, they would never face total war – but for those in the military, the two decades following the end of the Cold War would not be a time of peace. Government spending and the size of the military was reduced but the Army's commitments increased exponentially. Those serving not only faced continuous deployment in overseas operations, they would also be involved in immense upheavals that took place within the army. When the Berlin Wall came down, the British Army had not changed for decades. The ending of the Cold War, combined with a technological revolution, a changing society at home, and new global threats mean that the Army of the second decade of the twentieth-first century – the army this generation of soldiers is now retiring from – is unrecognisable from the one they joined in the late 1980s. This is the story of the soldiers who served in the British Army in those tumultuous decades. Andrew Richards' unique account of the huge changes in the British Army in this post-Cold War era includes the changing role of women in the army, racism in the army, and the lifting of the ban on homosexuals in the army as well as the changing of attitudes. It is based on the oral histories of dozens of soldiers – some of whom were only prepared to open up to a brother veteran and even then only anonymously. Andrew Richards served 22 years with the Household Cavalry. During his last years of service, he graduated from the Open University with a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours in Humanities with History and Classical Studies. Since retiring from the Army, he has written both fiction and non-fiction titles. His first non-fiction book, The Flag, was published by Casemate in 2016. The Gurkha Way A History of the Gurkhas from the 19th Century to the Present Day By John Sadler A full history of the Ghurkas from the origins of the regiment in the 1800s to the modern day, punctuated by accounts and thoughts from veterans themselves.
Gurkhas have fought in all the major wars where the British Army has been deployed, winning an extraordinary number of medals for bravery. Feared by their enemies, they also occupy a special place in the heart of the British people. In this book John Sadler tells the exciting, dramatic story of the Gurkha’s through interviews, unpublished diaries and correspondence. The Gurkha Way not only looks at the Gurkhas’ 200-year history and impressive track record but also – as the nature of threat and conflict morphs in modern warfare – their capacity to adapt. Sadler argues that the Gurkha’s genius for asymmetric warfare, ably demonstrated in Afghanistan, shows he is in many ways an ideal soldier for 21st-century conflict, and his worth to Britain is inestimable. The book covers a tradition of service where the uniform is a badge of honour and respect, and where having worn it buys a place in a complex social hierarchy. With heroic exploits from both World Wars, and a look at life as a Gurkha today and Nepali society, The Gurkha Way offers an informative, entertaining narrative containing drama, action, and pathos. John Sadler has been writing and teaching military history for over 30 years with some 35 titles in print. For over two decades he has lectured on war studies at Newcastle and Sunderland Universities Centre for Lifelong Learning, (now the ‘Explore’ Programme). He is also a highly experienced battlefield tour guide. His writing draws heavily on eyewitness accounts and he has been interviewing and recording serving personnel and veterans since the 1980s. Strick:Tank Hero of Arras The Making of an Extraordinary Soldier By Tim Strickland With a foreword by Major-General, Sir Laurence New CB, CBE, CCMI The biography of "Strick", the tank hero of Arras who rose to become a general.
Major-General Eugene Vincent Michael Strickland CMG, DSO, OBE, MM, CStJ, Star of Jordan – Strick – rose from penniless hardship to great military distinction. He was a tank man, a war hero who fought in France, North Africa and Italy during World War II, and whose name is revered even today among regiments that he commanded. His is the extraordinary tale of a man who gained a Regular Commission in the Indian Army from Sandhurst, but resigned soon afterwards. After a series of intriguing adventures, he then enlisted as a private soldier in the Royal Tank Corps. In May 1940, he played a major part in the counterattack at Arras in May 1940, where two British infantry tank battalions held up the German advance for three days, enabling the success of the Dunkirk evacuation – and perhaps saving Britain from ultimate defeat in the process. Strick's outstanding success as a troop-sergeant in France saw him immediately (re-)commissioned, and his rise to high command was then swift. He led the leading Squadron of the North Irish Horse with great distinction in Tunisia 1943, and later commanded North Irish Horse in its greatest battle, the breaking of the Hitler Line in Italy in 1944. This book focuses on his experience during World War II, drawing out the unique qualities required of leaders in close-combat battle; the particular demands of armoured infantry cooperation, and how an individual can make a success of such a rapid rise through the ranks during wartime. This fine story of adventure and achievement is brought alive by Strick's remarkable correspondence – he wrote home to his family every second or third day throughout the war, except when action was too fierce to write – supplemented by the recollections of his comrades and years of archival research. Tim Strickland studied at University College, Oxford and became a professional archaeologist and historian. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, has published a series of research papers and books and in 2003 was made MBE for services to archaeology. In retirement he has turned his mind to researching and writing about his father’s life, in the course of which he has walked over and studied all the sites of his father’s actions in World War II. British Fighter Aircraft in WWI Design, Construction and Innovation By Mark C. Wilkins Fully illustrated account of how British aircraft manufacturers vied to create the best fighter to counter German technology during World War I. C A S E M AT E IL LUSTRATED S P EC I AL
World War I witnessed unprecedented growth and innovation in aircraft design, construction, and as the war progressed – mass production. Each country generated its own innovations, sometimes in surprising ways – Albatros Fokker, Pfalz, and Junkers in Germany and Nieuport, Spad, Sopwith and Bristol in France and Britain. This book focuses on the British approach to fighter design, construction, and mass production. Initially the French led the way in Allied fighter development with their Bleriot trainers then nimble Nieuport Scouts – culminating with the powerful, fast gun platforms as exemplified by the Spads. The Spads had a major drawback however, in that they were difficult and counter-intuitive to fix in the field. The British developed fighters in a very different way; Tommy Sopwith had a distinctive approach to fighter design that relied on lightly loaded wings and simple functional box-girder fuselages. His Camel was revolutionary as it combined all the weight well forward, enabling the Camel to turn very quickly – but also making it an unforgiving fighter for the inexperienced. The British Aircraft Company's SE5a represented another leap forward with its comfortable cockpit, modern instrumentation, and inline engine – clearly influenced by both Spads and German aircraft. Each manufacturer and design team vied for the upper hand and deftly and quickly appropriated good ideas from other companies – be they friend or foe. Developments in tactics and deployment also influenced design – from the early reconnaissance planes, to turn fighters, finally planes that relied upon formation tactics, speed, and firepower. Advances were so great that the postwar industry seemed bland by comparison. Mark Wilkins is an historian, writer, and museum professional. He is the current Curator of Maritime History at the Calvert Marine Museum, and has been director and curator of both the Cape Cod Maritime Museum and The Atwood House Museum (Chatham Historical Society), and has worked for the Smithsonian and Mystic Seaport. He has a master’s degree in history from Harvard University and he is adjunct faculty, history department, at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. A Question of Time By James Stejskal The CIA's most valuable spy has been compromised. Only an unconventional secret Army unit has any chance of safely extracting him from East Berlin. The Cold War is about to turn hot. T H E S N A KE E AT ER C HRONI C LES
Berlin, 1979. When the CIA's most valuable spy is compromised, the Agency realises it does not have the capability to bring him to safety. If he cannot evade the dreaded East German security service, the result will be chaos and a cascade of failures throughout the Agency's worldwide operations. Master Sergeant Kim Becker lived through the hell of Vietnam as a member of the elite Studies and Operations Group. When he lost one of his best men in a pointless operation, he began to question his mission. Now, he is serving with an even more secretive Army Special Forces unit based in Berlin on the front line of the Cold War. The CIA turns to Becker's team of unconventional warfare specialists to pull their bacon out of the fire. Becker and his men must devise a plan to get him out by whatever means possible. It's a race against time to prepare and execute the plan while, alone in East Berlin, the agent must avoid his nemesis and play for time inside the hostile secret service headquarters he has betrayed. One question remains — is the man worth the risk? James Stejskal is a historian. To get background for his stories, he served 35 years with US Army Special Forces and the Central Intelligence Agency in many interesting places overseas. He is the author of several non-fiction books, including the definitive history of Special Forces Berlin: Clandestine Cold War Operations of the US Army's Elite, 1956–1990. This is his first novel. Chales de Beaulieu and translated by Linden Lyons First English translation of a military biography of panzer general Erich Hoepner, an early supporter of armoured warfare and commander of 4th Panzer Group in Operation Barbarossa. Erich Hoepner remains an ambiguous figure in the history of WWII – he joined conspiracies against Hitler, but his units undertook atrocities. This book examines his leadership of panzer formations in Poland 1939, France 1940, and Russia 1941. It is written by a general staff officer who fought alongside him. Tank Combat in Spain Armored Warfare During the Spanish Civil War 1936–1939 By Anthony Candil Covers the deployment of tanks during the Spanish Civil War, how they fought, and the lessons derived from their use in that conflict. The use of tanks in the Spanish Civil War wedded traditional war to modern technology. Spain turned out to be the perfect proving ground to carry out controlled, realistic experiments with live weapons and troops. This book details the armour deployed to Spain by Germany, Italy and the Soviet Union and how those contributions shaped combat, as well as how the lessons learnt were then applied to tank combat in World War II. It explores the tactics used and how these were developed, accompanied by over 60 photos. Nanjing 1937 Battle for a Doomed City By Peter Harmsen A veteran East Asia correspondent's path-breaking work of narrative history. This is the follow-up to Harmsen's best-selling Shanghai 1937: Stalingrad on the Yangtze, and begins where that book left off. In stirring prose, it describes how the Japanese Army, having invaded the mainland and emerging victorious from the Battle of Shanghai, pushed on toward the capital Nanjing in a crushing advance that confirmed its reputation for bravery and savagery in equal measure. While much of the struggle over Shanghai had carried echoes of the gruelling war in the trenches two decades earlier, the Nanjing campaign was a fast-paced mobile operation in which armour and air power played major roles. It was blitzkrieg two years before Hitler's invasion of Poland. A Warrior Dynasty The Rise and Fall of Sweden as a Military Superpower 1611–1721 By Henrik O. Lunde Examines the meteoric rise of Sweden as the preeminent military power in Europe during the Thirty Years War. This fascinating book describes how the Swedes first arrived in continental Europe during the 30 Years War, under their king Gustavus Adolfus. Just in time to roll back the reactionary Catholic tide and buttress the Lutherans, the Swedes proved more innovative in battle than their opponents, using the new arm of artillery plus tactical formations to establish supremacy on the battlefield. This horrific war still exists in collective memory as the worst travail in German history. 1 7T H CE N TU RY HI STO RY New in Paperback • 9781612009315 • £18.99 January 2021 • 328 pages • 229 x 152 mm • 8pp illustrations | eBook available: 9781612002439

Pearl December 7, 1941 By Daniel Allen Butler How America and Japan let peace slip away, leading to the Imperial Japanese Navy killing 2,403 in the the US Navy's Pacific Fleet, and wounding another 1,178. Pearl shows how both sides blundered their way through arrogance, over-confidence, racism, bigotry, and old-fashioned human error to arrive at the moment when the Japanese were convinced that there was no alternative to war. Pearl takes the reader into the heart of the attack, where the fighting men of both nations showed that neither side had a monopoly on heroism, courage, cowardice, or luck, as they fought to protect their nations.

NEW FICTION
Vagabonds Tourists into the Heart of Darkness By Nick Brokhausen and Jeff Miller After two decades in the Special Forces, Nick Brokhausen and friends make their way in the world using their unique skill set: from running counter-terrorism training to recovering kidnap victims.
Ever wondered where hardened SF soldiers work when they leave the service? This memoir (fictionalised to protect the innocent and guilty) gives a unique answer. Once a soldier has survived the ultimate contest between skill, luck, and happenstance, which defines combat, everything else seems easy and within reach. In his military career Nick Brokhausen had participated in some of the most dangerous and daring operations the United States had undertaken as a nation. After two decades in the Special Forces, including two deployments to MACV-SOG, he decided to leave the service and reinvent himself. Teaming up with Jeff Miller and other SF vets, Nick decided to use the skills he had acquired in his military career to make his way in the world. In his own inimitable style, Brokhausen weaves the tale of a truly unique career path, running counter-terrorism training courses for SWAT teams, testing the security for the Los Angeles Olympics, training private bodyguards for wealthy families in Mexico, working security projects around the world, recovering kidnap victims, and advising resource developers. Things rarely go to plan, but a mere detail like that never stops the Green Berets. Nick Brokhausen, a Special Forces veteran, joined the SOG on his second tour in Vietnam, and took part in some of the most dangerous missions of the war, deep in enemy territory. After Vietnam, Nick Brokhausen has led an interesting life, which has included work in security projects in a number of countries. He now runs a tech company and an armoring company.

The Folly of Generals By David Colley An examination of mistakes made by the Allied supreme commander General Dwight Eisenhower in 1944–45, and their implication for the shape of the last nine months of WWII. Colley argues that had Eisenhower been more adept at taking advantage of several potential breakthroughs in the Siegfried Line in the Autumn of 1944 the war in the European Theatre of Operations might have ended sooner. The book details the American penetration of the Siegfried Line in mid-September and their advance into Germany at Wallendorf before the troops were called back. It also examines in detail operations in the Stolberg Corridor and the actions of General Lucian Truscott. It compares the battles at Wallendorf and Stolberg with Operation Market Garden, and assesses the effectiveness of these operations. How the Army Made Britain a Global Power 1688–1815 By Jeremy Black (University of Exeter, UK – Retired) An examination of the British Army during the long 18th century, how it became a world-operating force and its part in imperial expansion and preservation. Between 1760 and 1815, British troops campaigned from Manila to Montreal, Cape Town to Copenhagen, Washington to Waterloo. This book will both offer a new perspective, one that concentrates on the global role of the army and its central part in imperial expansion and preservation, and as such will be a major book for military history and world history. This book aims to further to address the question of how this army was achieved despite the strong anti-army ideology/practice derived from the hostile response to Oliver Cromwell and to James II. Tukhachevskii, with endnotes and translation by Richard W. Harrison The first English translation of an official Soviet history of the Russian Civil War first published in the late 1920s. The Russian Civil War was a bloody three-year struggle whose outcome saw the establishment of a totalitarian communist regime within the former Russian Empire. South Pacific Air War, Volume 4 Buna & Milne Bay June – September 1942 By Michael Claringbould and Peter Ingman Chronicles aerial warfare in the South Pacific in this critical period.. No aircraft carriers appeared in New Guinea waters, instead the air war was fought solely by land-based air units. This was in the face of an increasingly complex strategic situation that saw the Japanese land at both Buna and Milne Bay. For the first time, airpower in the theatre was tasked to support the land forces of both sides which became engaged in a bloody struggle in the mountains of Papua and then the narrow muddy quagmire of Milne Bay. Never before has this campaign been chronicled in such detail, with Allied accounts matched against Japanese records. WOR L D WAR II AV IATI ON

Northern Australia was now at the mercy of Imperial Japanese Navy Betty bombers and Zero fighters whose crews were both skilled and experienced. However, help was on the way. Modern Taiwanese Air Power The Republic of China Air Force Today By Roy Choo and Peter Ho A comprehensive study of the air force of Taiwan with in-depth analysis backed by high-quality images. While the ROCAF is relatively well-equipped and trained, attempts to modernise have been hit by political and fiscal challenges. The ROCAF has made some headway with mid-life upgrades for the majority of its more than 20-yearold fighter fleet and will receive a much-needed boost with the introduction of F-16C/D Block 70s in the coming years. However, it still lacks many force-multiplier capabilities such as aerial refuelling and electronic warfare. The Nomonhan War 1939 Soviet-Japanese Clash at the Khalkhin Gol By Brendan Hulley This short but bitter war – known as Nomohan Incident in Japan, or the Battle of Khalkhyn Gol in the Soviet Union – was a crucial overture for the subsequent WWII. Following the Japanese occupation of Manchuria, in 1931, Japan turned its interest to nearby Soviet territories. The result, a series of bitter clashes after which the Japanese launched an all-out assault. Due to heavy casualties, the battle resulted in stalemate. Concerned about facing a two-front war, the Soviets reacted with a major counter-offensive and defeated the Japanese. Having secured its border in the Far East, the Soviet Union was free to concentrate on war in Europe. A SIA AT WAR

This study is centred on France but is open to the whole of Europe, exploring the battlefields that dot this geographical area from the Wars of Religion to the War of the Spanish Succession. Sieges in the Severn Valley during the English Civil War By Richard Israel Examines through historical and archaeological research the sieges of Bristol, Gloucester, Worcester, Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury during the First Civil War (1642–1646). The battlefields of Edgehill, Newbury and Marston Moor are superlatives with the middle of the 17th-century conflict known as the English Civil War, and whilst their importance to the conflict is undeniable, they detract from the power struggle that occurred between the Royalists and Parliamentarians throughout the land. This power struggle culminated in the construction of siege batteries and fortifications. This book demonstrates how siege techniques and this style of warfare impacted on the outcome of the conflict. 1 7TH CENTURY H ISTORY

The League of Cambrai was an alliance between the main European powers with the purpose of halting the expansion of the Republic of Venice. The war that followed was one of the major conflicts in the Italian wars: it lasted from 1508 to 1516, and saw several stages. In this book, the structure of the armies, the weapons, the battles and their death toll are described, and military heraldry, armies’ identification marks, and captains’ emblems, and insignias are analysed. 1 6TH CENTURY HISTO RY

After France had accepted the need for a major effort to support the Americans, Count de Grasse arrived in the West Indies with a large fleet, intending to arrive off the North American coast. The battle that followed was indecisive, though the French had the best of it. Cornwallis was now besieged at Yorktown by Washington; a force intended to relieve him arrived too late and he surrendered at Yorktown. Wars & Soldiers in the Early Reign of Louis XIV, Volume 4 The Armies of Spain and Portugal, 1660-1687 By Bruno Mugnai The story, organisation, uniforms and equipment of the Spanish and Portuguese armies in the period 1660–1687. It has been a commonly held historical belief that in the second half of the 17th century, the Spanish army suffered such catastrophic defeats that it effectively brought about the collapse of the state as a major player on the European stage. Spain’s ability to fend off Louis XIV’s assault was not eased by the fact that, at the same time, Spain had faced the Portuguese in the Iberian Peninsula, the English in the Caribbean, the Algerians in Melilla, as well as further insidious French assault in southern Italy. 1 7TH CENTURY HISTO RY

The North American P-51 Mustang powered by the British-designed Rolls-Royce Merlin/Packard engine was, quite simply, the best long-range escort fighter of the World War Two era. Entering service in November 1943, it curtailed prohibitive losses suffered by the heavy bombers of the US Eighth Army Air Force which carried out the strategic daylight bombing campaign against the Third Reich.

Mitsubishi A6M Reisen Zeke Volume 1 By Dariusz Paduch Covers the best known Japanese World War II fighter type. The Mitsubishi A6M Reisen is perhaps the best known Japanese World War II fighter type. The Zeke saw action in practically all battles waged by the Imperial Japanese Navy, from the attack on Pearl Harbor all the way through the defense of the Home Islands against the B-29s. During the first months of the war in the Pacific the Zero emerged as a world-class fighter, unrivaled in the air by anything the enemy could muster. The R-XIII was no match for the Luftwaffe fighters, bombers or even reconnaissance aircraft, being much slower, and armed with only one machine gun, but they were actively used for close reconnaissance and liaison tasks.

The Fighter/Bomber Horten Ho 229 By Marek Ryé Covers the first ever "flying wing" jet, built at the very end of World War II in the German Gotha factory. The Horten Ho 229 had a very unusual structure due to the shape of the airframe as well as the materials used – it was largely made of plywood and wood, not only duralumin and steel. The plane was powered by two Junkers Jumo 004B jet engines. The Horten Ho 229 was flown in January 1945. It was armed with two powerful 30mm MK 108 cannons, and it outperformed all the Allied planes. Nevertheless, the Ho 229 was planned to be used as a bomber.

The initial model B5N1 first saw action in the Second Sino-Japanese War and the updated model B5N2 later played a major role in the Attack on Pearl Harbor. The design of the original B5N1 model lacked protection but the Navy was reluctant to add weight in the form of armor, and instead looked to obtaining a faster version of the aircraft in the hopes of outrunning enemy fighters. The B5N was substantially faster and more capable than its Allied counterparts.

Atomic Bomb Island tells the story of an elite, top-secret team of soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen, scientists, and engineers who came to Tinian in the Marianas in the middle of 1945 to prepare the island for delivery of the atomic bombs then being developed in New Mexico, to finalise the designs of the bombs themselves, and to launch the missions that would unleash hell on Japan. The Indestructible Man The Incredible True Story of the Legendary Sailor the Japanese Couldn't Kill By Don Keith and with David Rocco The story of Dixie Kiefer, the victim of ten wounds in two wars, a veteran of some of the U.S. Navy’s most celebrated carriers and battles, and a naval aviation pioneer. After anti-submarine duty in WWI, Kiefer became a pioneer of naval aviation. He earned the Distinguished Service Medal at the Coral Sea and the Navy Cross at Midway, where – as his ship was sinking – he suffered severe burns to his hands and a compound fracture of his foot. After recuperating, Kiefer took command of the Ticonderoga. In January 1945, Japanese kamikazes struck the carrier, killing and wounding hundreds. Kiefer broke his arm and was struck by more than sixty pieces of shrapnel. WOR LD WAR II

Victory Banner Over the Reichstag Film, Document, and Ritual in Russia’s Contested Memory of World War II By Jeremy Hicks (Queen Mary University of London, UK) The history and mythology of one of the most famous images of World War II. One of the iconic images of WWII was a Russian soldier raising a red flag atop the ruins of the German Reichstag. Award-winning author Hicks explores how the Soviets, and then Putin, have used this image and the banner itself to build a remarkably powerful mythology of Russian greatness.

The Firebird The Elusive Fate of Russian Democracy By Andrei Kozyrev New in paperback revealing insider account of the first years of Russian independence. Andrei Kozyrev was foreign minister of Russia under President Boris Yeltsin from August 1991 to January 1996. During the August 1991 coup attempt against Mikhail Gorbachev, he was present when tanks moved in to seize the Russian White House. Kozyrev’s pro-Western orientation made him an increasingly unpopular figure in Russia as Russia’s spiraling economy and the emergence of ultra-wealthy oligarchs soured ordinary Russians on Western ideas of democracy and market capitalism. Parleying with the Devil Prisoner Exchange in Yugoslavia, 1941–1945 ' foreword by and Klaus Schmider By Gaj Trifkovic The first comprehensive analysis of prisoner exchanges and the attendant contacts between the German occupation authorities and the Yugoslav Partisans. The Second World War in Yugoslavia is notorious for the brutal struggle between the armed forces of the Third Reich and the communist-led Partisans. Less known is the fact that the two sides negotiated prisoner exchanges throughout the war. Under extraordinary circumstances, these early communications evolved into a formal exchange agreement centred on the creation of a neutral zone. The leadership on both sides used these points of contact to hold secret political talks. WOR L D WAR II

Thoughts on War By Phillip S. Meilinger Provocative collection of essays offering a fresh, if controversial, perspective on time-honored military values, one which encourages a critical revision of US military strategy. The twenty-first-century’s new geopolitical situation demands new principles for warfare – deemphasising decisive land victory in favour of airpower, intelligence systems, and indigenous ground forces. In Thoughts on War, Phillip S. Meilinger confronts the shortcomings of US military dogma in search of a new strategic doctrine. Meilinger revisits historical campaigns looking for answers to more persistent challenges – how to coordinate forces, manipulate time, and fight on two fronts. M IL ITARY STUDIES

Desert Redleg Artillery Warfare in the First Gulf War By L. Scott Lingamfelter A veteran and former 'redleg' of the First Infantry Division Artillery recounts the logistical and strategic decisions that led to a coalition victory in Operation Desert Storm. Drawing on original battle maps, official reports, and his and his comrades’ personal journals, Lingamfelter describes the experience of the First Gulf War through a soldier’s eyes and attempts to answer the question of whether the United States “got the job done” in its first sustained Middle Eastern conflict. Part military history, part personal memoir, this book provides a boots-on-the-ground perspective on the largest US artillery bombardment since World War II. M ODE RN WARFARE

Military Agility Ensuring Rapid and Effective Transition from Peace to War By Meir Finkel and translated by Moshe Tlamim Using the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) as a case study, it explores four important but generally neglected challenges of a swift transition from peace to wartime operations. Meir Finkel investigates the challenging mental transition from peace or routine security employment to a higher-intensity mode of action in combat. He explains that militaries must be capable of rapidly resolving debated pre-war concepts and doctrine even as war breaks out. He also discusses how to integrate and employ new weapons systems delivered at the last minute or during a conflict. P OL ITI C AL SCIENC ES

America's Israel The US Congress and American-Israeli Relations, 1967–1975 By Kenneth Kolander (University of Haifa, Israel) A new perspective on the US-Israel bond by focusing on Congress's role in developing and maintaining the special relationship during a crucial period. One of the defining features of US foreign policy since WWII has been the nation's special relationship with Israel. The author demonstrates how influential lobbies, America's affinity for Israel and antipathy towards Arabs, and economic pressures influenced legislators and inspired congressional action in support of Israel. He presents an investigation of the ways in which legislators exert influence in foreign policy. P OL ITI C AL SCIENC ES

Soccer Diplomacy International Relations and Football since 1914 Edited by Heather L. Dichter (De Montfort University, UK) An international group of experts analyse the relationship between football and diplomacy. Drawing on a wealth of historical examples, the contributors demonstrate that governments must frequently address soccer as part of their diplomatic affairs. They argue that this single sport – more than the Olympics, other regional multisport competitions, or even any other sport – reveals much about international relations, how states attempt to influence foreign views, and regional power dynamics.

The Turkish Arms Embargo Drugs, Ethnic Lobbies, and US Domestic Politics By James F. Goode (Grand Valley State University, US) An analysis of the complex factors leading to the imposition and continuance of the Turkish Arms Embargo. James F. Goode demonstrates that, alone, the human rights issues surrounding the 1974 invasion of Cyprus by Turkey fail to explain the resulting US-Turkish estrangement. Instead, he contends, factors including deepseated "Turkophobia," growing concern about a deadly heroin epidemic in the US, and pro-Greek lobbies played important roles in heightening tensions and extending the embargo. Caroline Walker – Janet By Caroline Walker, with an essay and interview with the artist by Hettie Judah Presents a body of work depicting the daily life of the artist’s mother at the family home in Fife, Scotland. Caroline Walker (born Dunfermline, Scotland, 1982) has become known for her striking canvases of women, particularly of women at work. These fragmented narratives, glimpses of women going about their lives in both public and private environments, begin as photographic snaps (often taken covertly) which are later worked up into lustrous oil paintings. In this publication, which was produced to accompany Walker’s first exhibition with Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh, in autumn 2020, the artist turns her attention closer to home, presenting a series of paintings in which the focus is the artist’s own mother, Janet, as she goes about her daily tasks. Nowhere in Place Where Photography and Meditation Meet By Christopher Jordan and Hank Lazer How mindful meditation informs an artist’s vision. The book starts in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, then moves to Boulder, Colorado, and finally to India. Within each locale, Jordan photographed “nowhere” in particular, because, for him, the photograph becomes a place of its own being: a sanctuary for meditation, a record of what is seen and heard and felt, an opportunity to see a place and an image right now. For Jordan, the photograph is a medium of meditation and transcendence, providing a point of intersection where one recognises our shared, common humanity. P HOTOGRAPHY

Imagine Reflections on Peace Edited by Constance Hale and Fiona Turner, Preface by Gary Knight, Introduction by Jonathan Powell, and Afterword by Samantha Power A provocative and thoroughly insightful look at not only what the peace process means to each individual and community, but also the nuanced, hard-won lessons behind what it means to actually build peace.
“Powerful, persuasive and forensic, this book will open your eyes, challenge your assumptions, and deepen your understanding of war and the people who survive it … Above all, it is a tribute to the victims of war, and to all those who never give up the struggle to achieve stability, justice and good governance in their countries.” — Angelina Jolie, UNHCR Special Envoy In 2018, the VII Foundation asked more than a dozen renowned reporters and photojournalists to revisit countries with which they had become achingly familiar during times of brutal conflict. The task was to see peace through the prism of their journalistic experience; to survey familiar towns and villages; to reconnect with women, men, soldiers, civilians, statesmen, and students who had survived the conflict or grown up in the postwar society; to discover what the lived experience of "peace" feels like. To augment this reportage, the VII Foundation sought input from academics and peacemakers. And they invited citizens of those countries to give their very personal narratives, in their own voices. The result is Imagine: Reflections on Peace – a curation of searing images and trenchant essays that show both micro and macro views of peace, with its uneven degrees of economic success, political stability, and social harmony. Gary Knight is co-founder and principle architect of the VII Photo Agency, co-founder of the VII Foundation and founder of the VII Academy. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Frontline Club, London; co-founder of The GroundTruth Project, Boston; founding Director of the Program for Narrative & Documentary Practice at the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University; twice Chair and President of the World Press Photo Award; was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 2009, a Logan Non Fiction Fellow at the Carey Institute in 2017, and an acclaimed photographer. Constance Hale is an award-winning writer, editor, and author of six books. Fiona Turner is an Emmy award winning broadcast journalist, producer, and documentarian. Her first full-length documentary film, “Eat Up,” was released in 2019. Ron Haviv is a co-founder of the VII photo agency and the VII Foundation. He has won multiple awards for his photojournalism. Mediterranean Planet By Laurent Ballesta A compilation of the biologist-photographer's most spectacular shots from 2010 through the present day. The Mediterranean remains a thriving body of water still waiting to be fully explored. Over its depths lie extensive and abundant territories that mankind has barely gotten to know: the coral reefs. These biodiversity ‘hotspots’ whose beauty rivals that of the reefs lie in the "twilight zone" between 60 and 120m (196 and 393 ft) below the surface, where less than 1% of light actually penetrates. Study, illustrate and expose the unfamiliar part of the teeming undersea life of the Mediterranean: such is the challenge undertaken by Laurent Ballesta, famous photographer, biologist and leader of expeditions. Lynn Chadwick 1914–2003 By Peter Osborne, with an essay by Judith LeGrove Accompanies the Lynn Chadwick exhibition at Osborne Samuel in September 2019. This Chadwick exhibition contains a number of new discoveries and covers the whole of his career with a special emphasis on the iconic sculptures of the 1950s and 1960s. It includes three unique original working models made of Stolit, a compound of plaster and iron filings which form the basis from which the mould was taken to cast the work in bronze. The Stolit sculptures in the show left Chadwick’s studio in the 1950s for exhibitions from which they were sold so no bronze casts were ever made. CON TEMP ORARY ART

Peace Smiles Rediscovering Thomas Mertin By Bishop Fintan Monahan Covers Thomas Merton’s childhood and rather turbulent adolescence, to his conversion to Roman Catholicism. Peace Smiles traces Thomas Merton’s fascinating and sometimes troubled life from a disrupted childhood and adolescence, to his conversion to Roman Catholicism, his ordination in 1949 and his life in the Trappist Monastery of Gethsemani. It was there that Merton’s prophetic voice began to emerge. Bishop Monahan explores Merton as artist, social critic and ecumenist, his anti-war and anti-racism stances until his untimely death at the age of fifty-three. CHR IST IAN THEOLOGY

How to be Our Best Self in Times of Crisis By Stuart Breen and Tom Gunning Helps the reader to understand the body’s reaction to crisis and how the physiological response impacts our ways of thinking, often for long periods of time. Crises can be defined as any changes in our circumstances that affect us deeply. They can vary from marriage or divorce to birth and death. Some we choose but many – like the Covid-19 pandemic – are chosen for us. By recognising the severe impact a crisis can have on our physical bodies, we learn to appreciate the importance of developing the skills to slow down and rest to allow for necessary repair and regeneration. This book guides us through this process of repair and regeneration in a holistic way, beginning with acceptance. CHR I STIAN TH EOLOGY

A Creed for Today Faith and Commitment for our new Earth Awareness By Donal Dorr Explores the interplay between ecological theology and spirituality at this critical juncture in the twenty-first century. Following the success of his widely acclaimed The Pope Francis Agenda, renowned theologian Donal Dorr returns with a topical new work. Rather than seeing ecological spirituality as an adjunct to Christian doctrine, Donal Dorr views it as central to the understanding of Christianity today and integral to understanding our relationship with the natural world. Stressing the importance of ‘new earth awareness’, the author lays out a compelling vision for how we should live at both a spiritual and practical level in terms of Christian faith and role as stewards of the Earth.
