Animating the Dead Bronze Age Burial Practices in Orkney Edited by Jane Downes (University of the Highlands and Islands) Brings together the results of the Orkney Barrows Project. The Bronze Age of Orkney is a poorly understood topic with little written on it, and this book seeks to make a significant contribution by publishing the results of the Orkney Barrows Project. The barrows sites detailed and discussed in the volume are Linga Fiold, West Mainland; Gitterpitten, Rendall, and Varme, Rendall. Eight Bronze Age cist burials excavated under ‘rescue’ conditions by a range of other individuals are also included within this volume. OXB OW BOOKS

The Bell Beaker Transition in Europe Mobility and local evolution during the 3rd millennium BC Edited by Laure Salanova (Université Paris-Ouest Nanterre La Défense) and Maria Pilar Prieto Martínez (University of Santiago de Compostela) New perspectives on social, technological and physical anthropological aspects of the European Bell Beaker transition. Could the circulation of objects or ideas and the mobility of artisans explain the unprecedented uniformity of the material culture observed throughout the whole of Europe? The 17 papers presented here offer a range of new and different perspectives on the Beaker phenomenon across Europe. The focus is not on Bell Beaker pottery but on social groups, using technological studies and physical anthropology. OXB OW BOOKS

Towards a Social Bioarchaeology of the Mycenaean Period A Biocultural Analysis of Human Remains from the Voudeni Cemetery, Achaea, Greece By Ioanna Moutafi (University of Cambridge) Investigates the complex relationship between Mycenaean funerary treatment and wider social dynamics. Through a contextual analysis of human skeletal remains and associated mortuary data from Voudeni, an important Mycenaean chamber tomb cemetery in Achaea, Greece, this book explores the post-mortem treatment of the body, through a novel interpretive approach that transcends unproductive cross-disciplinary divisions leading to an integrated biosocial approach. Provides a starting point for approaching the Middle Palaeolithic record of the English Channel region and considering the ecological opportunities and behavioural constraints this landscape offered to Neanderthal groups in north-west Europe. The volume reviews the Middle Palaeolithic archaeological record along the fringes of La Manche in northern France and southern Britain in light of recent advances and explores how this has transformed our understanding of Neanderthal behaviour. Representations Material and Immaterial Modes of Communication in the Bronze Age Aegean Edited by John Bennet (University of Sheffield) Addresses the types of written and non-written communication used during the Aegean Bronze Age. A series of reflections on modes of communication in the Bronze Age Aegean, drawing on papers presented at two round table workshops of the Sheffield Centre for Aegean Archaeology on ‘Technologies of Representation’ and ‘Writing and Non-Writing in the Bronze Age Aegean’. Contributions are arranged thematically in three groups: the first concerns primarily non-written communication, the second mainly written communication, and the third blurs this somewhat arbitrary distinction. Monuments in the Making Raising the Great Dolmens in Early Neolithic Northern Europe By Vicki Cummings (University of Central Lancashire) and Colin Richards (University of Manchester) A critical re-appraisal of the dolmen in Britain, Ireland, and Scandinavia. Dolmens are iconic internationa,l monumental constructions which represent the first megalithic architecture (after menhirs) in northwest Europe. This book provides a reappraisal of the ‘dolmen’ as an architectural entity and provides an alternative perspective on function. This is achieved through a re-theorising of the nature of megalithic architecture grounded in the results of a new research/fieldwork project covering Britain, Ireland and Scandinavia. The Development of Neolithic House Societies in Orkney Edited by Colin Richards (University of Manchester) and Richard Jones (University of Glasgow) Comprehensive discussion of Orknian Neolithic society based on major series of excavations. Considering that Orkney is a group of relatively small islands lying off the northeast coast of the Scottish mainland, its wealth of Neolithic archaeology is extraordinary. Drawing on an extensive programme of fieldwork in the Bay of Firth, Mainland Orkney, this book explores the idea that the physical appearance of the house is a potent resource for materialising the dichotomous alliance and descent principles apparent in the archaeological evidence for the early and later Neolithic of Orkney. Stereotype The Role of Grave Sets in Corded Ware and Bell Beaker Funerary Practices By Karsten Wentink A novel and comprehensive interpretation on Late Neolithic funerary practices. Throughout northern Europe, thousands of burial mounds were erected in the third millennium BCE. This book focuses on the significance and meaning of these Late Neolithic graves. By performing in-depth analyses of all the individual grave goods from Dutch graves, the biography of grave goods is explored. A novel and comprehensive interpretation shows how objects from graves were connected with travel, drinking ceremonies, and maintaining long-distance relationships. SIDESTONE PRESS

Forging Identities in the prehistory of Old Europe Dividuals, Individuals and Communities, 7000–3000 BC By John Chapman (Durham University) A synthesis of the prehistory of South East, Central and Eastern Europe. A synthesis of the archaeology of South East, Central and Eastern Europe over four millennia (7000 – 3000 BC). The cultural development of the region is treated as a mosaic of local prehistories, in which people responded to major change through modifications of all the dimensions of their identities. Informed by a gendered perspective, this book seeks to structure the Mesolithic, Neolithic and the Chalcolithic periods in terms of a nested set of identities—the person, the household, the settlement and the regional network. Grave Reminders Comparing Mycenaean Tomb Building with Labour and Memory By Daniel R. Turner Explores how Mycenaean builders perceived tomb construction, its costs and rewards. From ca. 1600 – 1000 BC, builders across southern Greece crafted thousands of rock-cut chamber tombs similar to earlier and contemporary ‘beehive’ tholos tombs. Rather than focus on the missing or muddled record of funeral and post-funeral activities, this book re-examines Mycenaean tomb architecture and the decisions that guided it by examining patterns and correlations in tomb design using photogrammetric modelling of 94 multi-use tombs in Achaea and Attica. Markets and Transactions in Pre-Modern and Traditional Societies Edited by Juan Carlos Moreno García (Sorbonne University) Examines the role of markets, traders, economic interaction and 'money' in premodern societies.

Markets emerge in recent historical research as important spheres of economic interaction in ancient societies. In the case of ancient Egypt, traditional models imagined an all-encompassing centralised, bureaucratic economy that left practically no place for market transactions, as many surviving documents only described the activities of the royal palace and of huge institutions?mainly temples. Yet scattered references in the sources reveal that markets and traders were crucial actors in the economic life of ancient Egypt. In this perspective, this volume aims to discuss the role of markets, traders and economic interaction, as well as the use of “money” in pre-modern societies, based on archaeological, anthropological and historical evidence. Furthermore, it intends to integrate different perspectives about the social organisation of transactions and exchanges and the different forms taken by markets, from meeting places where exchanges operated under ritualised procedures and conventions, to markets in which profit-seeking activities were marginal in respect with other practices that stressed, on the contrary, community collaboration. The book also deals with social forms of pre-modern exchanges in which trust and ethnic solidarity guaranteed the validity of commercial operations in the absence of formal codes of laws or accepted authorities over long distances (trade diasporas, guilds, etc.). Finally, the volume analyses a critical aspect of small-scale trade and markets, such as the commercialisation of agricultural household production and its impact on the peasant economic strategies. Boyes (University of Cambridge) Proposes a methodology for analysing the social context of writing systems. By the 13th century BC, the Syrian city of Ugarit hosted an extremely diverse range of writing practices. This book explores the social and cultural context of these writing traditions from the perspective of writing as a social practice. It combines archaeology, epigraphy, history, and anthropology to present a highly interdisciplinary exploration of social questions relating to writing at the site. OXB OW BOOKS

Silchester Revealed The Iron Age and Roman Town of Calleva By Michael Fulford (University of Reading) A highly illustrated synthesis of 500 years of occupation of the Iron Age to Roman town of Calleva (Silchester).

With its apparently complete town plan, revealed by the Society of Antiquaries of London’s great excavation project, 1890-1909, Silchester is one of the best-known towns in Roman Britain and the Roman world more widely. Since the 1970s, excavations by the author and the University of Reading on several sites including the amphitheatre, the defences, the forum basilica, the public baths, a temple and an extensive area of an entire insula, as well as surveys of the suburbs and immediate hinterland, have radically increased our knowledge of the town and its development over time from its origins to its abandonment. In this highly accessible volume written for a popular audience, Silchester’s development is detailed from the establishment of the Iron Age settlement, through the phases of the Roman town, up to its decline and collapse in the Saxon period. Modern archaeological methods allow the exploration of a number of themes demonstrating change over time, notably the built and natural environments of the town, the diet, dress, health, leisure activities, living conditions, occupations, and ritual behaviour of the inhabitants, as well as the role of the town as communications centre, economic hub, and administrative centre of the tribal ‘county’ of the Atrebates. Continuity and Rupture in Roman Mediterranean Gaul An Archaeology of Colonial Transformations at Ancient Lattara By Benjamin P. Luley (Gettysburg College) Examines the impact of Roman rule on the city of Lattara, Gaul, from 500-200 BCE. With the decline in popularity of the term “Romanisation”, scholars have increasingly turned to the important concept of “identity” to understand the experiences of local peoples living under Roman rule. This volume provides a detailed study of the ways in which the Celtic-speaking peoples of the ancient settlement of Lattara in Roman Mediterranean Gaul fashioned their lives under two centuries of Roman rule. The Wandering Herd The Medieval Cattle Economy of South-East England c.450-1450 By Andrew Margetts (Archaeology South-East) A multi-disciplinary study of the cattle economy of south-east England through the Middle Ages.

The British countryside is on the brink of change. With the withdrawal of EU subsidies, threats of US-style factory farming, and the promotion of ‘rewilding’ initiatives, never before has so much uncertainty and opportunity surrounded our landscape. How we shape our prospective environment can be informed by bygone practice, as well as through engagement with livestock and landscapes long since vanished. This study examines aspects of pastoralism that occurred in part of medieval England and suggests how we can learn from forgotten management regimes to inform, shape and develop our future countryside. The work concerns a region of southern England, the pastoral identity of which has long been synonymous with the economy of sheep pasture and the medieval right of swine pannage. These aspects of medieval pastoralism, made famous by iconic images of the South Downs and the evidence presented by Domesday, mask a pastoral heritage in which a significant part was played by cattle. This aspect of medieval pastoralism is traceable in the region’s historic landscape, documentary evidence, and excavated archaeological remains. Past scholars of the South-East have been so concerned with the importance of medieval sheep, and to a slightly lesser extent pigs, that no systematic examination of the cattle economy has ever been undertaken. This book represents a deep, multi-disciplinary study of the cattle economy over the longue durée of the Middle Ages, especially its importance within the evolution of medieval society, settlement and landscape. Medieval Military Combat Battle Tactics and Fighting Techniques of the Wars of the Roses By Tom Lewis Explores the battle techniques of the medieval period. We don't know exactly how medieval soldiers fought their battles. This book shows, for the first time, the techniques that may have been used by soldiers. It also breaks new ground in establishing medieval battle numbers as highly exaggerated, and suggests that we need to look again at the accounts of actions such as the famous Battle of Towton, which this work uses as a basic for its overall study.

The Wrecks of HM Frigates Assurance (1753) & Pomone (1811) By John Bingeman, Paul Simpson and David Tomalin The intriguing story of the rediscovery and investigation of two naval wrecks.

With the thought of treasure, Isle of Wight islander Derek Williams researched ancient local wreck records. Top of his extensive wreck list was the 40-gun frigate Assurance lost in 1753 while returning from Jamaica with Governor Trelawny on board, whose story possibly inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write Treasure Island. Derek’s first dive at the western point of the Isle of Wight called “The Needles” put him on top of cannons, various wreckage, and Spanish-American “Pieces of Eight”, all scattered at the foot of the rock face. He reported this astonishing discovery to the authorities which resulted in the site being designated the 6th British historic protected wreck site. When the authorities decided that further professional help was needed, author and diver John Bingeman supplied his Portsmouth Royal Naval diving team, and together with David Tomalin, County Archaeologist, developed the full potential of this important site. Over the next nine years John Bingeman’s team conducted annual visits to excavate the site; they successfully recovered 3,471 artefacts. Previously un-researched archaeological finds are featured in this book, including the development of rigging blocks, gunlocks, military buttons, and ship’s chain pumps, all superbly illustrated, as well as the results of research into numerous other artefacts of the period. Appendices contain the transcripts of the two ship’s court martials. The Birsay Bay Project Volume 3 The Brough of Birsay, Orkney: Investigations 1954-2014 By Christopher D. Morris (University of Glasgow) and Edited by Rachel Barrowman (University of Glasgow) A major multi-disciplinary report on Viking and early medieval sites on the Brough of Birsay, Orkney.

The Brough of Birsay was the power-centre of the Viking earldom of Orkney and is one of Historic Environment Scotland’s key monuments and visitor attractions on the islands. This publication is the culmination of 60 years of investigations that took place on the site between 1954 and 2014. The book incorporates comprehensive accounts of work undertaken by Dr Ralegh Radford and Mr Stewart Cruden between 1954 and 1964, excavations by the Viking and Early Settlement Research Project under the direction of the author on site between 1974 and 1981, a rescue excavation in 1993, a geophysical survey in 2007, and archival research up to 2014. Specialist artefactual and palaeobiological studies of metallurgical material, ogham inscriptions, and a gilt-bronze mount of Insular origin are included, together with re-analysis of the radiocarbon dates from all sites in Birsay Bay and a re-assessment of the architecture and dating of the church and related buildings on the Brough itself. The final two chapters put the Brough, as both a Pictish power-centre and the hub of the Viking earldom, in the overall context of Birsay Bay, Viking and late Norse Orkney, and the wider world between the Pictish and late Norse/Medieval periods. EAA 172: Excavations at Stoke Quay, Ipswich Southern Gipeswic and the parish of St Augustine By Richard Brown, Steven Teague, Louise Loe, Berni Sudds and Elizabeth Popescu An examination of Ipswich as one of England’s oldest urban centres. Excavations at Stoke Quay provide new evidence about the urban fabric of Middle Saxon Ipswich. The remains demonstrate the setting out of plots, streets, and buildings and show strong influences from Frankia and Scandinavia. The discovery of an exceptionally well-preserved Ipswich ware kiln is important since it indicates that production was dispersed across a wider area of the town than was previously suspected. This has potential implications for settlement linked to craft specialisation. EAST ANGLIAN ARCH AEOLOGY

Personal Adornment and the Construction of Identity A Global Archaeological Perspective Edited by Hannah V. Mattson (University of New Mexico) Cutting-edge research on personal ornaments from archaeological contexts around the world.

Items of personal adornment are found in archaeological contexts all over the world. These durable objects are often seen as inert embellishments or passive expressions of group identity. Recent research highlights the active and intricate roles jewellery items played in past societies. This volume brings together leading scholars conducting recent cutting-edge research on personal ornaments from archaeological contexts around the world, particularly those investigating how these objects were used to express, negotiate, and contest different aspects of social identity in the past. Topics range from the production of amber beads in north-west Europe to the symbolic significance of Iron Age torques in Iberia, burial practices among native peoples of the US and objects of memory in Viking Age Scandinavia. Social and trade/distribution networks among communities of various periods and regions and the expression of personal and group identity are explored. The Tree Experts A History of Professional Arboriculture in Britain By Mark Johnston An expert exploration of the history of professional arboriculture in Britain from the Roman period to the present day.

Trees are now in the public eye as never before. The threat of tree diseases, the felling of street trees, and the challenge of climate change are just some of the issues that have put trees in the media spotlight. At the same time, the trees in our parks, gardens and streets are a vital resource that can deliver environmental, social, and economic benefits that make our towns and cities attractive, green, and healthy places. This is the first book to trace the history of Britain’s professional tree experts, from the Roman arborator to the modern chartered arboriculturist. It also discusses the influences from continental Europe and North America that have helped to shape British arboriculture over the centuries. The Tree Experts will have particular appeal to those interested in the natural and built environment, heritage landscapes, social history, and the history of gardening. Crossing Continents Between India and the Aegean, from Prehistory to Alexander the Great By Robert Arnott Fascinating new examination of trade between India and the Aegean. The first contacts between Greece, the Aegean, and India are generally thought to have occurred at the beginning of the sixth century BC. There is now, however, growing evidence of much earlier but indirect connections, reaching back into prehistory. This study re-evaluates the evidence and speculation for such contacts, examining evidence from the Bronze Age to the time of Alexander the Great.

Universal Salvation and Freedom of Choice according to Origen of Alexandria By Lee Sytsma An exploration of paradoxical beliefs in the writings of Origen of Alexandria. The 3rd century theologian Origen of Alexandria has traditionally been famous for his belief in universal salvation. Yet, Origen is also famous for his insistence on moral autonomy. How can these two beliefs not result in a paradox or logical inconsistency in Origen’s theology, as many contemporary scholars suggest they do? Examines the current state of knowledge about Viking-Age towns (c. 800–1100) from both sides of the Irish Sea, focusing on everyday life in and around these emerging settlements. Although historical sources are addressed, the emphasis of the volume is overwhelmingly archaeological. OXB OW BOOKS

Echo's Chambers Architecture and the Idea of Acoustic Space By Joseph L. Clarke (University of Toronto) An exploration of architectural approaches to acoustic space.

A room’s acoustic character seems at once the most technical and the most mystical of concerns. Since the early Enlightenment, European architects have systematically endeavoured to represent and control the propagation of sound in large interior spaces. Their work has been informed by the science of sound but has also been entangled with debates on style, visualisation techniques, performance practices, and the expansion of the listening public. Echo’s Chambers explores how architectural experimentation from the 17th through the mid20th centuries laid the groundwork for concepts of acoustic space that are widely embraced in contemporary culture. It focuses on the role of echo and reverberation in the architecture of Pierre Patte, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, Carl Ferdinand Langhans, and Le Corbusier, as well as the influential acoustic ideas of Athanasius Kircher, Richard Wagner, and Marshall McLuhan. Drawing on interdisciplinary theories of media and auditory culture, Joseph L. Clarke reveals how architecture has impacted the ways we continue to listen to, talk about, and creatively manipulate sound in the physical environment. Far Beyond the Moon A History of Life Support Systems in the Space Age By Kärin Nickelsen (Ludwig-Maximilians-University) and David P. D. Munns (City University of New York) Explores the problems, solutions and stories of life support systems in space.

From the beginning of the space age, scientists and engineers have worked on systems to help humans survive for the astounding 28,500 days (78 years) needed to reach another planet. They've imagined and tried to create a little piece of Earth in a bubble travelling through space, inside of which people could live for decades, centuries, or even millennia. Far Beyond the Moon tells the dramatic story of engineering efforts by astronauts and scientists to create artificial habitats for humans in orbiting space stations, as well as on journeys to Mars and beyond. Along the way, David P. D. Munns and Kärin Nickelsen explore the often unglamorous but very real problem posed by long-term life support: How can we recycle biological wastes to create air, water, and even food in meticulously controlled artificial environments? Together, they draw attention to the unsung participants of the space program—the sanitary engineers, nutritionists, plant physiologists, bacteriologists, and algologists who created and tested artificial environments for space based on chemical technologies of life support—as well as the bioregenerative algae systems developed to reuse waste, water, and nutrients, so that we might cope with a space journey of not just a few days, but months, or more likely, years. Nature's Diplomats Science, Internationalism, and Preservation, 1920-1960 By Raf De Bont (Maastricht University) Explores the development of science-based and internationally conceived nature protection. By examining international efforts to protect migratory birds, the threatened European bison, and the mountain gorilla in the interior of the Belgian Congo, this book sheds new light on the launch of major international organisations for nature protection in the aftermath of World War II. Additionally, it covers how the rise of ecological science, the advent of the Cold War, and looming decolonisation forced a rethinking of approach and rhetoric; and how old ideas and practices lingered on. A Monastery for the Ibex Conservation, State, and the Conflict of the Gran Paradiso, 1919-1949 By Wilko Graf von Hardenberg (Max Planck Institute for the History of Science) Examines Italy’s successful prevention of the extinction of the Alpine ibex and its impact. Gran Paradiso National Park is Italy’s oldest, and was instrumental in preventing the extinction of the Alpine ibex between World War I and just after World War II. Wilko Graf von Hardenberg merges the history of conservation with the area’s social history and Italy’s larger political history to produce a multifaceted narrative about the park as an institution, the conflicts it triggered, and practices adopted to manage the ibex despite hurdles placed by the fascist regime. Michael Curtiz A Life in Film By Alan K. Rode The first biography of Michael Curtiz, Academy Award-winning director.

Academy Award-winning director Michael Curtiz (1886-1962), whose best-known films include Casablanca (1942), Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), Mildred Pierce (1945) and White Christmas (1954), was in many ways the anti-auteur. During his unprecedented twenty-seven-year tenure at Warner Bros., he directed swashbuckling adventures, westerns, musicals, war epics, romances, historical dramas, horror films, tearjerkers, melodramas, comedies, and film noir masterpieces. The director's staggering output of 180 films surpasses that of the legendary John Ford and exceeds the combined total of films directed by George Cukor, Victor Fleming, and Howard Hawks. In this first biography of this colourful, instinctual artist, Alan K. Rode illuminates the life and work of one of the film industry's most complex figures. He begins by exploring the director's early life and career in his native Hungary, revealing how Curtiz shaped the earliest days of silent cinema in Europe as he acted in, produced, and directed scores of films before emigrating to the United States in 1926. In Hollywood, Curtiz earned a reputation for his explosive tantrums, his difficulty communicating in English, and his disregard for the well-being of others. However, few directors elicited more memorable portrayals from their casts, and ten different actors delivered Oscar-nominated performances under his direction. In addition to his study of the director's remarkable legacy, Rode investigates Curtiz's dramatic personal life, discussing his enduring creative partnership with his wife, screenwriter Bess Meredyth, as well as his numerous affairs and children born of his extramarital relationships. This meticulously researched biography provides a nuanced understanding of one of the most talented filmmakers of Hollywood's golden age. Beyoncé in the World Making Meaning with Queen Bey in Troubled Times Edited by Christina Baade and Kristin A. McGee Explores Beyoncé’s impact as an artist and public figure.

From Destiny's Child to Lemonade, Homecoming, and The Gift, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has redefined global stardom, feminism, Black representation, and celebrity activism. This book brings together new work from 16 international scholars to explore Beyonce's impact as an artist and public figure from the perspectives of critical race studies, gender and women's studies, queer and cultural studies, music, and fan studies. The authors explore Beyoncé's musical persona as one that builds upon the lineages of Black female cool, Black southern culture, and Black feminist cultural production. They explore Beyoncé's reception within and beyond North America, including how a range of performers—from YouTube gospel singers to Brazilian pop artists—have drawn inspiration from her performances and image. The authors show how Beyoncé's music is a source of healing and kinship for many fans, particularly Black women and queer communities of colour. Combining cutting edge research, vivid examples, and accessible writing, this collection provides multiple lenses onto the significance of Beyoncé in the United States and around the world. "The lyrical writing in these essays combines the classic intersections of race, gender and sexuality with themes of international fandom, celebrity activism, and construction of colorism. Translingual Inheritance Language Diversity in Early National Philadelphia By Elizabeth Kimball (Drexel University) Examines how communities used language to create identities and serve the common good. This book tells a new story of the early days of democracy in the United States, when English had not yet become the only dominant language. Drawing on translingual theory, which exposes how language use contrasts with the political constructions of named languages, Elizabeth Kimball argues that Philadelphians developed complex metalinguistic conceptions of what language is and how it mattered in their relations. Authentic Writing By Jeffrey Rice (University of Kentucky) Examines the rhetorical features of authenticity in order to expand the focus of scholarship. In typical academic circles, texts must be critiqued and shown to reveal larger, broader meanings than what are initially evident. But what if a scholar chooses instead to write without critique? Can scholarly writing be authentic if its topics comprise the everyday? Jeff Rice uses this question to trace a position regarding critique, the role of the scholar, the role of the personal in scholarship, the banal as subject matter, and the idea of authenticity. Vaccine Hesitancy Public Trust, Expertise, and the War on Science By Maya Goldenberg (Univeristy of Guelph) Reframes resistance to vaccines as a crisis of public trust rather than a war on science.

The public has voiced concern over the adverse effects of vaccines from the moment Dr. Edward Jenner introduced the first smallpox vaccine in 1796. The controversy over childhood immunisation intensified in 1998, when Dr. Andrew Wakefield linked the MMR vaccine to autism. Although Wakefield's findings were later discredited and retracted, and medical and scientific evidence suggests routine immunisations have significantly reduced life-threatening conditions like measles, whooping cough, and polio, vaccine refusal and vaccine-preventable outbreaks are on the rise. This book explores vaccine hesitancy and refusal among parents in industrialised North America. Although biomedical, public health, and popular science literature has focused on a scientifically ignorant public, the real problem, Maya J. Goldenberg argues, lies not in misunderstanding, but in mistrust. Public confidence in scientific institutions and government bodies has been shaken by fraud, research scandals, and misconduct. Her book reveals how vaccine studies sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry, compelling rhetorics from the anti-vaccine movement, and the spread of populist knowledge on social media have all contributed to a public mistrust of the scientific consensus. Importantly, it also emphasises how historical and current discrimination in health care against marginalized communities continues to shape public perception of institutional trustworthiness. Goldenberg ultimately reframes vaccine hesitancy as a crisis of public trust rather than a war on science, arguing that having good scientific support of vaccine efficacy and safety is not enough. In a fraught communications landscape, Vaccine Hesitancy advocates for trust-building measures that focus on relationships, transparency, and justice. Fallen Tigers The Fate of America's Missing Airmen in China during World War II By Daniel Jackson The incredible story of the ‘Flying Tigers’, America’s volunteer airmen in China.

The Japanese invasion and occupation of China was critical to the outcome of the Second World War. Acknowledging China's precarious situation, the US provided crucial aerial support to China. Even before the declaration of war against Japan, the infamous "Flying Tigers," a volunteer force of American airmen, landed in China only weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor. This book sheds light on the stories of downed American airmen who attempted to avoid capture by Japanese forces and return to allied territory. In gripping detail, it reveals that the heroism of these pilots was equalled, if not exceeded, by the Chinese civilians and soldiers that risked their lives to return the Americans safely to their airfields. Furthermore, the drive to aid American pilots transcended ideology, as both Chinese communists and nationalists tacitly acknowledged the commonality of their struggle against the Japanese. Drawing upon extensive research in mainland China, Jackson incorporates both American and Chinese sources in this historical drama to show the extent of American/Chinese cooperation. Fallen Tigers is an incredible story of survival in the midst of a brutal war that insightfully illustrates the relationship between missing American pilots and their Chinese allies on the ground who were willing to save their lives at any cost. Filled with compelling personal narratives from memoirs, wartime diaries, and dozens of interviews with veterans, Fallen Tigers will appeal to history buffs and scholars interested in WWII, American wartime aviation, and international relations between the US and China. The Aesthetics of Experience Design A Philosophical Essay By Anna Ichino (University of Milan) Explores the role of the imagination in human cognition and culture. What is the imagination’s role in human cognition and culture? This book explores the hypothesis that its role is larger than we commonly think. Combining traditional methods of philosophical inquiry with relevant findings from cognitive and social sciences, the author seeks to provide solid empirical support for that hypothesis, on the one hand, and to explore its important theoretical and practical implications, on the other. Creativity from the Periphery Trading Zones of Scientific Exchange in Colonial India By Deepanwita Dasgupta (University of Texas) A philosophical framework for understanding peripheral creativity in science. Sometimes the best ideas in science are born from difficult and resourcepoor conditions. This study turns our attention to these peripheral actors, shedding new light on how scientific creativity operates in lesser-known, marginalised contexts, and how the work of self-trained researchers, though largely ignored, has contributed to important conceptual shifts.

Victorian Science and Imagery Representation and Knowledge in Nineteenth Century Visual Culture Edited by Nancy Rose Marshall (University of Wisconsin) Examines the relationship between science, art and their influences on one another. Focusing on the close kinship between the arts and sciences during the Victorian period, this volume reveals the unique ways in which British and American visual culture participated in making science. It reminds us that science and art are not tightly compartmentalized, separate influences, but rather fields that shared forms - manifest as waves, layers, lines, or geometries - and invest in the idea of the evolution of form. Racing for America The Horserace of the Century and the Redemption of a Sport By James C. Nicholson Remembers a blockbuster event and its legacy for American racing.

On October 20, 1923, at Belmont Park in New York, Kentucky Derby champion Zev toed the starting line alongside Epsom Derby winner Papyrus, the top colt from England, to compete for a $100,000 purse. Years of Progressive reform efforts had nearly eliminated horseracing in the United States only a decade earlier. But for weeks leading up to the match race that would be officially dubbed the "International," American journalists provided unprecedented exposure for the sport. The widespread buzz surrounding the race helped lay groundwork for the sport's national proliferation in the years that followed and reaffirmed New York's status as the epicenter of American racing a decade after the sport's return from a two-year shutdown there. In Racing for America, author James C. Nicholson argues that the Zev-Papyrus match served as an important starting point for a progression of international events, including the Empire City Gold Cup, the Washington DC International Stakes, and the Arlington Million, that eventually culminated in the creation of the Breeders Cup World Championships—the annual apex of American racing. The book narrates the rise of an international racing circuit and community, the imperilled status of American racing, the rise of big-time celebrity culture surrounding sports, the glamour and corruption of American politics and resurgent big business, and the popularisation of eugenics. Islam Context and Complexity By Paul Stenhouse Explores Islam and its Qur’an, Law, and history, to shed light on tragic modern events. Islam is not homogeneous. Its complexity, however, is bewildering for nonMuslims, most of whom know little or nothing of Islam. Paul Stenhouse’s deep scholarly interest in Samaritan history and traditions has taken him on intellectual and literary paths ‘continually crisscrossed by Islam and its Qur’an, Islamic Law and Islamic history’. Here, he seeks to offer some light on the background to tragic events unfolding throughout the world. AU STRALIAN SCH OLAR LY PUBLI S HI N G

Even As We Breathe

Back to the Light

By Corey Sobel

By Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle

By George Ella Lyon

Corey Sobel challenges tenacious stereotypes in this compelling debut novel, shedding new light on the hypermasculine world of American football.

Even As We Breathe invokes the elements of bone, blood, and flesh as Cowney navigates difficult social, cultural, and ethnic divides.

The poet traces the course of a woman's life from girlhood, with its breakages and denials of voice and story, to recovery of those powers and mature feminine wisdom.

Second Story

By Barbara Hamby

By Ilan Stavans

By Denise Duhamel

In the three sections of this book, Barbara Hamby walks out into the current American chaos with its inferno of wars, street violence, apocalyptic fantasies, and racial tension.

More than 40 poets from all over the world explore a life dedicated to the pursuit of beauty through poetry in different languages.

Throughout the book Duhamel investigates our nearcatastrophic ecological and political moment, hyperaware of her own complicity, resistance, and agency.
