I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and were able to take time off to spend with family and friends The beginning of a new year is a time of renewal, and I am confident that this talented team will achieve new heights of success in the months ahead I am pleased to share our second edition of the Blue Devil Finance Focus, which I hope you will find both informative and enjoyable, as it has a nice balance of work updates and personal stories and events This edition far surpassed my expectations and I want to thank all of you for the positive feedback on the first newsletter, as well as your contributions to making it even better. OrganizationalChanges in UNIVERSITYOPERATIONS

In February, Daniel Ennis unveiled significant organizational changes aimed at fostering leadership opportunities internally within Duke.

The focal point of these changes revolves around the restructuring of departments previously overseen by interim Vice President Russell Thompson. Thompson, who led Emergency Management and Business Continuity, Parking and Transportation, and Disability Management System during his interim tenure, will return to his permanent role as Executive Director of Utilities and Engineering Services in Facilities Management by the end of February.

As part of these organizational changes, John Clements has been appointed as Associate Vice President, Campus and Business Services In his new role, Clements will provide operational leadership for Parking and Transportation Services while retaining oversight of Campus Mail Services, Duke Stores, Duke Faculty Club, and financial services like Trademark & Licensing and budgeting within University administration.

John Dailey has been promoted to Associate Vice President, Public Safety (and Chief of Police). Dailey will now also lead Emergency Management and Business Continuity and begin reporting directly to the Executive Vice President.

Furthermore, Disability Management System, under the leadership of Christina Kline, will now report to Antwan Lofton, Vice President of Human Resources.

Jordan Clayton in Corporate Payroll Services “takes the cake” in Shout Outs this quarter!

“Jordan Clayton, is a great employee, who works in the Customer Service Team portion here in Corporate Payroll Services, and who received several great kudos lately and who I feel deserves to be included in our next newsletter.“

First Kudos:

I just had the opportunity to speak with Jordan in payroll. She was most helpful, gave very clear guidance and was super nice! I really appreciated her approach and support! If you do daily huddles with your team or have a forum to recognize your staff, please share this kudos for Jordan.

Second Kudos:

I don’t know who all sees these e-mails, but I want to give a shout out to Jordan! She is AWESOME! All of you are, but she helped me with something today that was a great relief to finish. A big THANK YOU!!

I am writing regarding Ms. Jordan Clayton. I just wanted to let you know that she went above and beyond to help me when I felt like I had nowhere else to turn. She was not only helpful but she also followed up with me on everything she was doing to help me. She is very courteous and very professional. You have a remarkable employee there. In my 44 years at Duke I have not had someone to go out of their way to help me solve an issue especially when it was not her job. I will give you details so you will understand how GREAT she is. So the reason why I am writing is to let you know how lucky you are to have an employee like Ms. Clayton. In my 44 years at Duke there aren’t many left like her. She is very knowledgeable, helpful, kind and considerate and you can tell that she wants to help the person that is calling in. It seems like if it is not their job they send you on a wild goose chase at Duke and that is what I was feeling until I got Ms. Clayton. I told her how much I appreciate her kindness and understanding of what I was going through and she was very understanding/caring to my needs. I surely wish more Duke employees were like her. She did not have to go out of her way to help me at all but she did and I felt like she wanted to help me. I feel that Ms. Clayton needs to be recognized or told how valuable she is to Corporate Payroll. She definitely goes ABOVE AND BEYOND to help people.

This year, February 13th, could only mean one thing in Administrative Systems Management: Laissez les bons temps rouler! Let the good times roll!

For more than 20 years, ASM has gathered with their SAP colleagues in OIT to celebrate Mardi Gras with a potluck lunch and this year was no different.

Staff sign up to bring their favorite dish and it never disappoints. Red Beans and Rice, Gumbo, Jambalaya and King Cake are menu staples while each year also seems to include something new – and always delicious! ASM retirees are invited to join the festivities and it’s a great opportunity to sit back, relax, catch up and enjoy some good food – really good food. While the purple and green glittery hats, beads and masks didn’t make the move out of their offices at the American Tobacco Campus, the fun and camaraderie remain. Can’t wait until March 4, 2025!

OERAF HOSTS THE 2024 SYMPOSIUM FOR DUKE RESEARCH ADMINISTRATORS

On March 20th, The Office of Education for Research Administration and Finance (OERAF) hosted 530 research administrators from across Duke for a Symposium for Duke Research Administrators. This one-day, annual event allows research administrators to come together for a day of learning. This year's event featured a welcome from Dr. Jenny Lodge, Vice President for Research and Innovation, and Dr. Geeta Swamy, Associate Vice President for Research, Duke University and Vice Dean for Scientific Integrity, School of Medicine, who both focused on this year's event theme, "Soaring to New Heights" to highlight the accomplishments of research administrators and relate on their role as Duke enters its second hundred years

In this year's faculty plenary, Dr. Shyni Varghese, a faculty member who holds appointments in both the School of Engineering and the Department of Orthopedics in the School of Medicine, shared her fascinating work focused on developing products that help with many common medical issues. Dr. Brian Sexton, Director of Duke Center for Healthcare Safety and Quality, was the afternoon keynote speaker and shared specific tools and approaches that individuals can employ to prevent burnout and improve their well-being. For the remainder of the day, participants could choose from various concurrent session topics ranging from an S4 Update to effort management best practices to discuss using tools in MyRESEARCHhome to better manage industrysponsored research For more details or to review recordings of sessions, visit the symposium website.

While the OERAF business unit – Alysha Cieniewicz, Gwen Hall-DiFabio, Katherine Norris, Kim Brock, Kristin Lawrence, and Megan Tirpak – hosts this annual event, it is only possible with support from our partners across Duke, including Finance colleagues. OERAF would like to thank Laura Jensen and Adilbek Madaminov from Accounting Systems Management and Nate Martinez-Wayman and Michelle Rigsbee from the Office of Post Award Administration for their involvement and support. As one attendee shared, "As usual, y'all did a bang-up job! I know the annual symposium is quite an undertaking with lots of cooks in the kitchen. Thanks so much for putting on a good, informative day!"

1. In what department or area do you work? And how long have you been with the company?

Michele: I work in Duke Corporate Payroll, I worked for PDC prior to the DHIP transition for 2.5 years and now with Duke it will be a year in July.

2. What does your job entail?

Michele: I’m the payroll supervisor for the processing team. We handle the forms for requests received for payroll processing. The forms that departments submit for off cycles, iForms, supplemental pays, etc.

3. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Michele: Don’t laugh, a cartoonist for Disney. I grew up in South Africa so it seemed like a really big reach. I did make it to America, but not Disney.

4. What is your favorite tv show/movie?

Michele: Hard to choose just one. My go to is Wild Earth, they broadcast the safari’s from Africa, so I get to still see “home”.

5. Favorite vacation or trip you ever took?

Michele: Hmm, I would have to say the beach trips in South Africa are by far my favorite. Particularly Ballito and Sodwana. Sodwana is known for it’s scuba diving and it’s a protected national park, which meant an amazing night sky where you could see so many stars that it was breathtaking not to mention the fantastic surroundings of lush plant and animal life. Ballito for the little reefs and rock pools along the shore line that you can snorkel around and see some pretty cool wildlife. I know you said one, but my next favorite would be Saint Maarten, also for access to snorkeling and wildlife I got to see whilst there.

6. What is your favorite quote and by whom?

Michele: “Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.” - John Lennon

Michele Clark is having her first solo art exhibition. The art show is hosted at ARTmosphere Community Art Center in Clayton from March 30-May 25. There will also be a reception for people to come by and meet Michele on April 20 from 3-5pm.
