istoric architecture, national monuments, unique attractions, miles of unspoiled beaches, and a vibrant culinary and cocktail scene are just a few of the reasons St. Augustine is one of the most visited destinations in the Sunshine State. Whether you’re staying for a few days or for a season, the Nation’s Oldest City has plenty to see and do – ensuring a fun-filled and memory-making trip for the entire family. To help you pack in as much as possible during your time in our beautiful city, we’ve put together a seven-day itinerary including the best of the best in where to go and what to see. DAY 1- HISTORY Grab breakfast at The Blue Hen Café in the historic Lincolnville neighborhood (we suggest the Zada Jane’s Stack) before a visit to Lightner Museum, which features a collection of antiquities from the American Gilded Age and is housed within the landmark Hotel Alcazar Building. Next, head across the street to Flagler College, a four-year liberal arts college located in the old Ponce de Leon Hotel, a luxury hotel built in 1888, by oil magnate and railroad pioneer, Henry Flagler. The school is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture and offers daily tours. Delight your taste buds with a relaxing sit down lunch at Columbia Restaurant. Order a sangria and the restaurant’s signature “1905” Salad. There is still plenty of daylight left, so stroll down King Street and stop in at Villa Zorayda Museum. Built in 1883 and inspired by the 12-century Moorish Alhambra Palace in Spain, the museum features unique antiques and artifacts from all over the world. For a unique twist on history, check out “Escape U Florida” as you and your friends and family attempt escape from a British fort with soldiers on your tail. For dinner, try the Ice Plant Bar, at the forefront of St. Augustine’s flourishing culinary scene. DAY 2 – THE BEACHES Today is all about sun and surf. St. Johns County is home to more than 42 miles of pristine, white sandy beaches. Café Eleven is a great spot to grab coffee and egg sandwiches to go. Try the Sunrise Sandwich with bacon, egg, provolone, tomato, and avocado. Anastasia State Park

It’s home to one of the quietest stretches of beach in the area and has an onsite restaurant, Island Beach Shop and Grill, plus a gift shop for sunscreen, sunglasses, or other beach items you might have forgotten to pack. The park also boasts camping, nature trails, boat rentals, fishing, and birding, so plan to spend your entire day exploring one of the area’s most beautiful locales. Head back to your hotel or B&B for a quick shower and change of clothes before driving up to the Reef Restaurant, Aunt Kate’s, or Beaches at Vilano, all popular waterfront restaurants offering coastal cuisine pairing fresh local seafood with traditional Southern and Mediterranean flavors.

or thousands of years, civilization has narrated the story of the Fountain of Youth. A magical spring exists – it’s been said – that will restore the youth of anyone who drinks or bathes in its waters. Imagine for a few moments what it would be like to have the wisdom that comes with age and the vitality and exuberance that comes with youth. And there you have the motivation and driving force behind Spanish explorer and conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon’s exploration of Florida in 1513. In fact, Ponce de Leon was so obsessed with finding the vitality-restoring waters that he set sail from Puerto Rico and ultimately landed – as many historians believe – on the coastline of St. Augustine in what is now known as Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. “The park itself has a fascinating duality,” says Kit Keating, communications manager for

the Fountain of Youth. “The front of the park commemorates the landing of Ponce de Leon over 500 years ago. It is also a perfect example of a roadside attraction that pre-dates the giant mouse that ate Florida.” Keating is referring to Disney World, of course. With a colorful and captivating history dating back more than five centuries, the Fountain of Youth has remained a favorite place to explore in the Nation’s Oldest City – seeing approximately 175,000 visitors per year. It’s also Florida’s oldest attraction with signed guest books dating back to 1867. From the park’s legendary muster of
peacocks, to the daily cannon firings, to the re-creation of the Timucuan Village of Seloy, Fountain of Youth has a bit of something for everyone. So, starting in 1513 with Ponce de Leon’s discovery of an artesian spring thought to bring eternal youth, here is a rundown of the park’s history:
“
flowers. “The artesian spring was free flowing as it had flowed for thousands of years,” Keating explains. ““A seismological event had collapsed the spring to a still pond, so Williams welled it in to be able to water his lilies, irises and tropicals.” In 1868, Williams opened the area to the public, but it didn’t become a real, bonafide tourist attraction until the early 1900s when Dr. Luella Day McConnell (aka Diamond Lil) purchased the land adjacent to the Matanzas Inlet and was instrumental in tirelessly promoting the area as the landing spot of Ponce de Leon in 1513. McConnell claimed to have found a coquina cross in her garden measuring 15 stones tall and 13 stones wide with a silver salt cellar underneath containing a parchment paper authenticating Ponce de Leon’s landing. The parchment has been authenticated twice to be a vellum from between 1280 - 1420 AD, with writing dating to between 1500 - 1530 AD. The park’s next owner, Walter B. Fraser, an educator from Georgia who vacationed in Florida before relocating to the Nation’s Oldest City in 1927, saw the potential of St. Augustine to be a tourism venue and continued the work of McConnell to promote the Fountain of Youth as the birthplace of Florida.

“The place was relatively untrammeled until September of 1565 when Pedro Menendez de Aviles came ashore here on a military mission,” says Keating of the post-Ponce de Leon days. “He was tasked by the king to destroy the French, who had set up shop about 40 miles north at Fort Caroline.” In 1587, Fountain of Youth became the site for the first mission church built by the Franciscans.
Today, Mission of Nombre de Dios has been reconstructed using local cypress, which was known to 16th century Spaniards to be durable and resistant to wood-eating insects. Over the next few hundred years, the park was largely uninhabited or used for agricultural purposes. That is until 1868 when English florist H.H. Williams purchased the property and used it for the commercial cultivation of fruits and

But Fraser brought a new component to his brand of tourism, historic preservation. “He went to work in forming historical preservation committees and in helping birth tourism for St. Augustine for its historical value,” says Keating. In 1934, the first archaeological dig took place on the park grounds. Over the past 80 years, everyone from the Smithsonian Institution to Yale University to the University of Florida have made discoveries on the 15 acres of history-rich land unearthing weaponry, jewelry and pottery. Fraser ultimately passed control of the park to his son, John R. Fraser, who ran it for decades before his death in 2010, when his children took over. They’ve continued to make improvements to the park as a tourist attraction as well as work ABOVE: SOURCE OF ETERNAL YOUTH? INSETS MODERN AMMENTIES MEET HISTORICAL SETTING

to maintain the historical integrity of the property’s past. “The Fraser Family, in essence, became stewards of the land, preserving it for future generations,” explains Keating. “Since 1927, the impact of the Fountain of Youth being a tourist attraction has been minimal and the owners greatly respect the archeological component of the property.” While St. Augustine doesn’t appear to host waters possessing magical powers that bestow eternal youth and immortality, one thing is for certain: the springs that brought Ponce de Leon, hydrated the Timucuan Indians for three thousand years and served as the impetus for Menendez’s settlement has brought our little city a wealth of history, vitality and a whole lot of bragging rights.

Her favorite memories of those early years were working at the ice cream shop. “Dipping ice cream was my favorite thing,” she says. “I could hold five cones in my hand and put a scoop in each one.” She held the cones in her left hand, and dipped them with her right hand. “I can still do it to this day.” Today she enjoys experimenting with new ideas for the company. “I mainly do it,” she explains, but sometimes gets help from the staff. Their latest venture is the addition of gelato, an Italian style of ice cream. With a selection of 27 flavors, the gelato is made fresh every week and offers mouth-watering flavors as mint cookie, Swiss chocolate and mud pie. The gelato is sold at the chocolate stores. “In the late 1980s and 1990s”, Virginia “She showed me once, and I said ‘hey, you

Some folks have a problem with it; others don’t. Lot’s of folks claim to have a remedy, however —everything from a spoonful of pancake syrup, to an earplug in the left ear only, have been passed around as ways to combat it. The best advice is to take precautions beforehand if you think you are susceptible to motion sickness. Once it gets you, it’s got you. It’s too late at that point to avoid it, or to cure it, without going back to shore. There are many over the counter options, from Dramamine to the Transderm patch. Whatever option you choose, if this is an issue for you, do it in advance, often starting the evening before your trip. Also, keeping your eyes on the steady horizon and breathing fresh air (instead of heading inside for the cabin) will often reduce the effects. For those of us fortunate to live on, or to visit this beautiful Florida coastline, there are unlimited recreational options available for young and old alike. Don’t shortchange yourself by failing to experience one of Florida’s oldest and most exciting recreational opportunities. Get out on the water and enjoy the sport that Hemingway loved. At the least, you’ll take home a lifetime of memories. At best, you might just get hooked.

SPECIAL EVENTS March 25, 2018 BLESSING OF THE FLEET
April 1, 2018 ST. AUGUSTINE EASTER PARADE
Blessing of the Fleet in St. Augustine is a historical ceremony dating back to the city’s earliest days of Spanish colonial occupation. This event takes place on Palm Sunday and invites all vessels, commercial and pleasure, to receive a blessing from the Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine. With roots from the Spanish Colonial days when seafaring vessels would be blessed so as to have a safe journey, the tradition continues in 2018. Alll watercraft from trawlers to yachts and more are welcome. Each vessel is encouraged to decorate with flags and bunting as well. The ceremony begins at noon on Sunday, March 25th, 2018, with a procession from the Cathedral Basilica along the Plaza de la Constitución to the St. Augustine Municipal Marina. This traditional blessing will then take place at the Marina. This event is open to the public. 111 Avenida Menendez, St. Augustine, 32084 Call (904) 824-9725 for more information.
Here in the Nation’s Oldest City, we have a parade that is unique in the first colony in America. St. Augustine adopted The “Parada de los Caballos y Coches”, the Parade of Horses and Carriages in early 1957. Now joining the parade are high stepping bands, marching and twirling units, colorfully decorated floats, clowns, gaily decorated horse units, the Easter Bunny, historic militia and police units and beauty queens. Many local and state elected and appointed dignitaries will sit on the reviewing stand as our parade marshal Leads the Royal Trio and Entourage through the downtown streets of St. Augustine. The Parade begins each year at 3:00 p.m. on San Marco Avenue winding through downtown St. Augustine and is preceded by the Promenade in the Plaza de la Constitucion. www.oldestcityeaster.org/

June 2, 2018 DRAKE’S RAID On June 6th, 1586 twenty-three ships approached the harbor of the Spanish colonial city of St. Augustine with 2000 Englishmen under the command of Sir Francis Drake. A day after making sight of the harbor, 1000 of these men, led by Captain Christopher Carlile, would land on Anastasia Island to mount cannons opposite the Spanish wooden fort – located on what is now the Fountain of Youth Park – and begin to duel with the Spanish forces there. 300 Spanish would abandon the fort during the night and with daylight approaching on the morning of June 8th, the English crossed Matanzas Bay, taking the fortification and proceeding to drive the Spanish rear guard from the city of St. Augustine. Join us in 2018 for the 30th annual reenactment of Sir Francis Drake’s Raid on old San Agustine. During the day, a 16th century-style military encampment will take place at the Fountain of Youth Park and will play host to drills, demonstrations and living history interpretation from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The reenactment of the sacking and burning of the town will commence Saturday evening at 7:00 PM in the old city, beginning at the Old City Gates and ending in the Plaza. www.hfm.club/events/annual/drakesraid

A VIEW TO REMEMBER THE CELLAR UPSTAIRS WINE & JAZZ BAR STORY AND PHOTOS BY RENEE UNSWORTH
M
ost guests want to sit outside and enjoy the view — getting a glimpse of Flagler College towers, Memorial Episcopal Church…etc. etc. The view is what makes The Cellar Upstairs truly special.
When the The Cellar Upstairs first opened, it only had outdoor space and was only open seasonally, closed from November to January. About four years ago, indoor seating was added in case of inclement weather, and the venue was opened year-round, rain or shine. “The view ... the fact that it’s on the roof, and it’s a nice place to sit and relax,” Cox confirmed. Local wine, craft beer, and stunning views of the Oldest City make guests feel like VIP when visiting The Cellar Upstairs on the San Sebastian Winery’s rooftop.
“It opened in 2002, and was part of the addition — we tripled the size of the building from 6,000 to 18,000 square feet,” explained Charles Cox, President of the winery. “I had been to several rooftop bars in other cities and after living here for about six years or so, I thought it would be great for St. Augustine — guests can see out over the San Sebastian River and enjoy the outdoors.” Guests can choose from San Sebastian’s red and white wines, the Blanc De Fleur (a sweet bubbly), sangria, port or sherry, craft
and imported beers, and a light menu of appetizers and sandwiches. Most starters serve at least two people, such as the ‘Boars Head’ Bistro Meat & Cheese Platter, Fresh Baked Brie, Baguette & Dipping

Olde Towne is St. Augustine’s first community and the link to its 16th century origins. Remarkably preserved, this enclave is resplendent with architectural landmarks, beautiful gardens, and fascinating shops, Galleries and accommodations are found here too. The narrow brick streets and walkways, tone walls, and overhanging balconies maintain a distinctly European ambience.
