Annual Report 2021–2022
HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Castilleja Community, This summer, I reignited my fascination with a remarkable woman—Eleanor Roosevelt—a true woman learning, woman leading. She was a bold and opinionated political figure, a dedicated diplomat, and an unrelenting activist. What intrigues me most about Eleanor Roosevelt, however, is the myriad ways she could turn a simple phrase into an enduring quote. So, as I contemplated a theme for this year, I looked to Roosevelt for her wisdom and inspiration, and I found a message that resonated with my best hopes and dreams for our school community this year.
“With the new day comes new strength.” I had embarked on choosing a theme with the determination to resist a post-pandemic idea that would focus on healing and repairing, because I felt our community was ready to move beyond spending each day rebuilding. Inspired by Eleanor Roosevelt, I began to trust that indeed, each new day can bring us new strength—the strength to forge ahead and pursue a future we have yet to imagine! So yes, IMAGINE is precisely what we will do! Now in our 115th year, Castilleja School remains one of the oldest institutions in Palo Alto, with a long and rich history, strong roots, and celebrated traditions. At the same time, with approvals from the Palo Alto City Council to rebuild our campus and increase our enrollment, we have never been in a better position to IMAGINE such a bold and innovative future. If you have not heard the news, in June the City Council, in a 6-1 vote, approved our application to modernize our campus and enroll more students in our Upper School. With this approval process now complete, we are ready to imagine the most exciting and transformative future possible for our students, our neighborhood, and our community. This year, I want to invite you to IMAGINE together. This is a pivotal moment in the history of our school, and it is also a turning point for our country and for people everywhere around the world. Wherever we center ourselves on this planet, this moment calls on each one of us to draw upon our capacity to IMAGINE together. In recent years, in the workplace, in our communities, and at schools like Castilleja, we have learned new approaches to building community and new ways to support each other. This year, I hope that we can draw upon everything we have learned to contemplate new possibilities, new ways to see each other and the world around us, and new ways to engage with old questions—always drawing upon our inner courage and strength. In this report, you can learn about updates to our offerings as well as be reminded of familiar celebrations we have shared for decades or longer. You may also find yourself marveling at the generosity of our community; I know I do. Our donors make the difference, allowing Castilleja to continue to prepare the next generation of women for leadership and lifelong learning. Thank you for your commitment to Castilleja’s mission and to Castilleja students. Warmly,
Nanci Z. KauffmanHA Castilleja Head of School

ACROSS THE BOARD
Ensuring a Bright and Equal Future A TRIBUTE TO BOARD CHAIR MARY SPEISER P’20 ’22 At critical moments in Castilleja’s history, Board Chairs have stepped up to the challenges of the times, always with an eye toward ensuring a robust future for the school. Mary Speiser P’20 ’22, who began as a Trustee in 2016 and became Board Chair in 2019, will certainly be remembered as someone who led the Board of Trustees through a pivotal moment in time. Deeply dedicated to the mission of the school, Mary has remained focused on how Castilleja can help create the brightest future possible for women and girls. Soon after joining the Board, Mary partnered with Associate Head of School for Finance and Operations Kathy Layendecker to engage with the Castilleja and Palo Alto communities in meaningful ways, seeking their support for our Conditional Use Permit (CUP) application. Mary worked with different constituents to pursue further collaboration and cooperation, in order to bring our hopes of updating campus closer and closer to becoming a reality. Meanwhile, Mary also rose into the role of Vice Chair and began to think about the future of the school on yet another level as she co-chaired the strategic planning process with fellow Trustee Jim Bean P’21. Many schools hire outside consultants to oversee the strategic planning process. However, Mary and Jim developed a thoughtful approach that made that step unnecessary. After participating in countless meetings with different community members to hear their input, they helped to chart a map to reach critical goals around diversity and inclusion, interdisciplinary learning, and stewardship of resources for the next generation of women leaders. During her final month as Board Chair, Mary realized another important goal when the City of Palo Alto voted to approve Castilleja’s plans to modernize campus, enroll more students, and improve conditions in the neighborhood. She had been a steadfast observer of city hearings for years, and at the final meeting, it is no surprise that she rose to the podium to speak out about her responsibility to ensure Castilleja’s future. It is important, as well, to recognize that Mary’s term as Board Chair encompassed one of the most challenging in recent history, as the school leadership worked tirelessly to make sound and safe decisions during a global pandemic. From the first moment Mary became a Trustee, she has bravely tackled every challenge, and in her final message as Board Chair, she urged everyone in the Castilleja community to look toward “the bright—and equal—future of Women Learning, Women Leading.” Without a doubt, Mary herself has played a lasting role in that promise for the future. 2 | Castilleja School
THE FOUNDATION FOR CHANGE While Mary was the Board Chair in the City Council chambers when our proposal was approved, it is important to recognize two other Board Chairs who laid the foundation for this moment. Barb Rosston P’12 ’16, Chair from 2011 to 2015 • Initiated this vision for the future of Castilleja and began outreach to the City of Palo Alto • Along with fellow Trustee Joe Martignetti P’07 ’10, regularly met with a group of neighbors to engage in formative conversations that shaped the CUP application • Developed the framework for the successful new Master Plan • As a graduate of a girls’ school, she understood the lifelong lessons and power of this educational opportunity Ken Hirsch P’17 ’19 ’26, Chair from 2015 to 2019 • Initiated the Board resolution to officially file the CUP application • Moved Castilleja from Master Planning stage to the architectural design phase • Guided the process through City staff and Environmental Impact Review • Launched the Capital Campaign and continues to Co-Chair the Capital Campaign Committee with fellow Trustee Cindy Goldberg P’17
NEW TRUSTEES (left to right): Ashley Chambers P’27, Jamaica Kreps P’28, Jennifer Taylor-Mendoza P’21, Megan Jones Bell ’00, and Stephanie Chen P’26
Meet Our New Trustees Castilleja’s Board of Trustees, comprised of current and past parents, alumnae, and community leaders, is vital in ensuring the school’s future. The newest members of the Board, including one alumna, collectively bring a depth of expertise in philanthropy, fundraising, mental health, and education. Their contributions will be invaluable as we continue to prioritize our Strategic Plan and move toward a campus reimagined. Megan Jones Bell ’00 “Castilleja meets young women at a critical stage in the development of their identity, values, and purpose. The world desperately needs ethical, critical-thinking, and compassionate women leaders devoted to solving the challenges of tomorrow. I am committed to helping Castilleja endure and evolve to give young women the environment, experiences, and community to challenge, nourish, and support them as the next generation of leaders and changemakers.” Ashley Chambers P’27 “Through my work as a Trustee, I hope to make an impact on several levels by using my voice and dedication to further the mission of Castilleja, to support individual girls as they thrive and grow, and to make our broader community on the Peninsula become stronger through understanding the importance of women’s equity at every turn.”
Stephanie Chen P’26 “I am a passionate supporter of Castilleja’s mission– the last three years have been transformative for my daughter. I hope to bring my life experience and skills to support the school in its mission to educate confident, resilient, engaged, and creative young women who are prepared to make a difference in the world.” Jamaica Kreps P’28 “As a former teacher, I know an education that fosters intellectual curiosity, passionate leadership, and engaged citizens changes lives; and as a recipient of tuition assistance throughout my own education, I’ll work to make sure Castilleja continues to have an economically diverse student body. Joining the Board feels like I've come full circle, and I know my contributions to Castilleja's future are just beginning.” Jennifer Taylor-Mendoza P’21 “As a Trustee, I look forward to continuing Castilleja’s legacy of empowering young women. 2022 and beyond brings opportunities to further realize equitable access while maintaining academic excellence as we embrace growth. I am committed to strategic planning, policy reform, and professional development to enhance student access and achievement.”

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS
Accreditation After official review, Castilleja receives the highest rating on every standard FORMAL REVIEW Every seven years, Castilleja must be accredited through a formal review process to ensure the school is meeting the 16 defined standards of quality as set forth by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS). In June 2022, Castilleja’s accreditation was approved, and we received the highest possible rating on every standard. SELF-STUDY The first step in the process was for the school to conduct a thorough self-study. Every employee had the opportunity to reflect and provide input on the Accreditation Standards: Institutional Purpose and Core Values Teaching and Learning Financial Sustainability Operations Institutional Stewardship and Leadership
FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS •
Remain focused on implementing Strategic Plan
•
Remain focused on establishing school as an antiracist institution; continue commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice work
•
Streamline curricular competencies
•
Support community through eventual rebuild of campus
•
Reflect on implicit values of perfectionism
Institutional Improvement and Sustainability The majority of the report was compiled during the 2020–2021 academic year, a remarkable feat given the school’s shift to distance and then hybrid learning. CAMPUS VISIT Following the report’s completion in December 2021, a committee of administrators from CAIS peer schools visited campus for three days in February 2022 to evaluate the study and meet with a variety of faculty, staff, parents and guardians, and Board members. In addition to determining the accreditation status, the committee offered a report containing a series of recommendations on areas upon which the school can improve. RECOMMENDATIONS Supporting the Strategic Plan and Master Plan, these recommendations will inform the school’s focus over the next several years. As we move forward with our campus improvements and increase the enrollment in our Upper School, we will continue to refine our program. We will ensure our students engage in the experiences on and off campus that allow them to deepen their leadership and antiracism practices. We will also lean into discomfort as we work toward shedding the burdens of perfectionism that harm women’s wellbeing and serve as obstacles to their leadership.

Visionary Giving The annual Head’s Circle event was hosted in the home of Jamaica and Jay Kreps. The evening honors donors whose giving enables transformative and critical growth at Castilleja. A thought leader typically delivers an inspirational message during the event, engaging guests in conversations related to furthering Castilleja’s mission. This year we were honored to hear Dr. Denise Pope P’14 ’17, founder of Challenge Success and current Senior Lecturer at the Stanford University Graduate School of Education, reflect on the value of a Castilleja education. Dr. Pope also served on our Board from 2013 to 2019 and provided crucial leadership at a time when schools around the Bay Area were realizing the impact of stress and pressure on students. It was invaluable to have her at the table during those conversations. Dr. Pope has done extensive work around what it means to learn rather than simply “do school;” her years at Challenge Success fortify her knowledge of how to truly engage students. During her conversation with Nanci KauffmanHA, Dr. Pope emphasized how important it is to help students feel a sense of belonging and wellbeing to form foundations of an engaging and inspiring program.
“Social, emotional, and cognitive functions are all neurologically intertwined. Together, they impact our sense of wellness, which students need in order to engage in deep learning that really sticks. Castilleja's breadth of student support resources aligns with the school’s goal to provide engaging and collaborative learning experiences that lead to lasting knowledge.” — Denise Pope P’14 ’17 Founder, Challenge Success
At the end of the evening, the guests felt assured that the balanced and thoughtful programming at Castilleja both offers ample resources to support mental health and fosters curiosity and engagement in all aspects of the learning journey. As we look forward to a new campus, we know these truths will stand the test of time. Annual Report 2021 – 2022 | 5

Welcome... TO THE CREATIVE AND INQUISITIVE CLASS OF 2029 Fifty-eight remarkable girls said yes to joining the Castilleja Class of 2029! This delightful group speaks 13 different languages at home. The girls come from 39 schools and 17 towns across the Peninsula, but they share a love for athletics, arts, community, cooking, and coding. Now, we are lucky to welcome them into the Castilleja community. FROM THEIR ADMISSION APPLICATIONS:
I wonder... ...if I can have multiple careers such as being a scientist, but also an environmentalist, a pianist, or a leader. ...how the COVID pandemic will be in 2030. ...why there is racism in the world and why people are treated differently because of what they look like. ...are there other intelligent species beyond Earth and if we'll get to meet them. ...why many people abuse facts and try to prove themselves right. ...how Castilleja makes girl power work so well. ...how the world works: why plants grow; how trees communicate; and how snowflakes form. INVESTIGATOR TRIPS
To Investigate, and Beyond
8 | Castilleja School
Since the inaugural Global Investigator Trips in 2008, the junior class has embarked on travel-based handson learning experiences in China, India, Guatemala, France, Senegal, and the Dominican Republic. Agility is a core learning competency in the ACE Center, and this year’s graduating Class of 2022 displayed great flexibility when their junior trip was postponed due to COVID. As a result, they traveled during their senior year, spending a week in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert at the U.S. and Mexico border to explore concepts that have always been at the core of this experience— learning how to understand, value, and respect the dignity of others—this time in a community within the United States. One focus of this trip was to explore how local landscapes and politics affect the environment and the wider ecological system. In order to engage more deeply with these topics, the class spent a morning in Saguaro National Park. Many students removed Buffelgrass, an invasive species, from the park. As we learned during Global Week 2022, this intentional clearing actually helps prevent the spread of wildfire, and subsequent displacement of animals. Later that week, students visited Nogales, a city directly on the border. They met with Borderlandia, an organization that seeks to build the public’s understanding of borderlands. While the class was in Tucson, environmental experts from the Sierra Club described
2023 DESTINATIONS • Bolivia • Peru • Indonesia • Santa Fe, New Mexico
how certain sections of the border separating the U.S. and Mexico hinder animals from crossing into their natural habitats due to increased erosion and flooding. Of course, it wouldn’t be a complete Castilleja experience without learning about the local cuisine. Students took a Sonoran cooking class and made a delicious tamale lunch with rajas, salsa fresca, esquite (corn salad), and black beans. Next year, the Classes of 2023 and 2024 will have the opportunity to travel to one of four places—New Mexico, Bolivia, Peru, or Indonesia—to explore firsthand the socio-political and economic complexities of living in a globalized world. Through an examination of social justice, truth and beauty, global systems, and women in the world—four of Castilleja’s Interdisciplinary Content Areas—students will develop empathy, knowledge, and cultural competence, all critical elements of this capstone experience. Class Adventures
OUTDOOR RETREATS CREATE LASTING MEMORIES
“Retreats should be a balance of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone whilst also sitting in the comfort of community,” explained Eve Kulbieda, Castilleja’s new Upper School Dean of Students. Every year, each grade embarks on an overnight sojourn to learn about one another outside the classroom, build trust, and set grade-level norms. It’s this trust that forms the foundation for a warm and supportive experience around the Circle. Collaborating with the Class Deans, Mrs. Kulbieda and Tiffany Crist-StudleyHA, Middle School Dean of Students, have developed a retreat program that centers on enhancing the student experience at each juncture of adolescence. MIDDLE SCHOOL On retreat, students take risks together to deepen their self-confidence, learning, and relationships. Middle School retreats are intentionally focused on the grade-level themes–Exploration, Identity, and Engagement–so that students develop a strong sense of self as they learn to be part of a larger community. For example, 7th graders practice risk-taking and teamwork through a high ropes course in the Santa Cruz mountains. Over the course of the two days away from campus, it is Ms. Crist-Studley’s hope that retreats enable students to “take a step back from academics and focus on social and emotional growth.” 10 | Castilleja School
UPPER SCHOOL Upper School retreats focus on community-building and leadership. The 9th Grade Dean facilitates activities that build a positive culture so that returning and new students begin high school as a cohesive class. Sophomores kayak in Half Moon Bay, reflect on their North Star, and bond with their advisory groups. In the spring, juniors engage in discussions about their vision for their upcoming final year around the Circle. Finally, two weeks before graduation, seniors enjoy a last celebratory hurrah together. SPACE FOR CONNECTIONS Participating in collaborative games and activities–such as performing goofy skits–builds strong bonds between students and adults. Spending time off campus together allows advisors to learn about students outside the classroom and grants students the opportunity to see adults in a less formal setting. At Castilleja, students are more than their accomplishments and teachers are more than their courses. Retreat naturally softens the traditional student-teacher dynamic, “creating space for vulnerability, empathy, and trust-building that is crucial to fostering a learning environment in which students can thrive,” reflected Mrs. Kulbieda.
FINANCIAL STRATEGIES
Investing in Our Values Like many other schools, Castilleja has embarked on making significant changes in response to the vast reach of institutionalized and systemic racism. In 2020, realizing we needed to deepen our commitment to become a more just and equitable school, we launched a framework for Teaching and Learning Antiracism and defined five Antiracism Competencies. At Castilleja, we always think deeply and critically to find answers. So we asked ourselves: how are we conducting the business of the school? What can we do differently to promote justice and equity beyond the classroom and authentically live our values? When describing the thought process behind shifting the school’s business practices, Kathy Layendecker, Associate Head of School for Finance and Operations, stated, “To restore justice and create equity is to create more economic opportunities for those who identify as people of color.” The first step? Evaluate the school’s endowment and research how other institutions were investing money to champion justice and inclusivity. Ms. Layendecker and Alyssa Rieder P’20 ’23, Chair of the Board’s Investment Committee, then convened a working group of Investment Committee members. In partnership with advisors from Cambridge Associates, the group spent a year studying various approaches to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) investing including how to define a diverse investment so that the investment strategy would support the school’s equity goals. Ultimately, the Board decided to invest in funds owned and/or managed by women and people of color. Not only does this decision align with the school’s commitment to DEIJ, but also, the data indicates that diversifying the backgrounds of managers and owners of funds results in higher than average returns. This is consistent with other data about the benefits of including diverse groups in decision-making. Creating lasting change takes time and patience. Investing in an endowment is no different—shifting strategies is a long-term pursuit. However, it is also satisfying to begin witnessing signs of progress. Within the first year of adopting a new investment strategy, we have already seen a commitment to diverse managers and ownership increase as a percentage of the overall endowment investments.
CASTILLEJA’S INVESTMENT PROGRAM'S DEFINITION OF DIVERSE FIRMS • Firms are considered women-owned or people of color-owned if at least 33% of firm ownership is held by women or people of color. • Strategies are considered women-led or people of color-led if at least 33% of senior portfolio manager positions on the team are held by a woman or a person of color. • Strategies that specifically seek to invest in organizations and securities that address the needs of diverse groups are also considered diverse.
“I am excited that Castilleja demonstrated such strong commitment and leadership in addressing these issues so thoughtfully. The Board Investment Committee spent significant time and effort to become more educated on these issues, engaged in deep internal discussions, and then collaboratively formulated deliberate and nuanced investment management guidelines, simultaneously codifying appropriate tracking of, and reporting out on, relevant metrics.” —Alyssa Rieder P’20 ’23, Chair of the Board’s Investment Committee

Castilleja Reimagined
The World Needs More Women Leaders
When the Palo Alto City Council approved our new Conditional Use Permit in June, the future we had been working toward for almost a decade suddenly became ours to realize. The campus design will not just hold our students, it will enrich our programs, boldly changing the way students are learning and leading at Castilleja. This vision can only be realized with the generosity of our entire community. With a new century of possibilities ahead of us, we are engaging in the largest capital campaign in the history of the school as we seek to raise $125 million to create a campus that will prepare our students to confront the future with compassion and courage. Educating women leaders is at the heart of this campaign, and the world critically needs these young women to rise into leadership roles to effect change. Become part of the next chapter of Castilleja’s legacy. The future is ours to build together.
Our new campus will allow us to increase our enrollment, making it possible to offer this transformational experience to more young women who want to make a difference. As our student body grows in the Upper School, our course catalog will grow as well, adding exciting new interdisciplinary offerings. However, as important as the new teaching possibilities, our growing community of learners will continue to add unique perspectives to our conversations inside and outside the classroom. Castilleja students learn from each other in countless ways, and adding more voices to our community will enrich our relationships and our programs.
Innovative Spaces to Redefine Learning We are eager to transform our campus into flexible and innovative learning spaces that will inspire our current world-class faculty, engage our curious students, and strengthen our community. Our modernized campus will create an integrated model for our academic programs, Makerspace, ACE Center, and Library, opening learning across disciplines and divisions and encouraging engagement and leadership. The new buildings will also feature smaller and larger gathering spaces for team teaching and community building, and the new opportunities to teach and learn outdoors take particular advantage of our climate and the natural world.
12 | Castilleja School
Leading Sustainability Every step of this process prioritizes our commitment to sustainability, beginning with thoughtful deconstruction. The new learning spaces will be built from preserved and recycled elements of old campus buildings in combination with responsibly, locally-sourced materials. The final result—net-zero, all-electric buildings that will rely on energy generated through on-site solar, heat recovery, and renewable credits, creating a fossil-fuel free campus—sets a new bar for sustainability and environmental stewardship. The updated efficient energy systems will be linked to a teaching dashboard that will create opportunities for students to take an active role in stewardship and allow Castilleja to become a leader among schools nationwide and among organizations in the Bay Area.

DONOR IMPACT
A LEGACY OF THREE
Generations
BOARD CHAIR FROM 1967 TO 1971, DONALD RHOADES AND HIS WIFE DOROTHY SET IN MOTION FIFTY YEARS OF GIVING TO CASTILLEJA. TOGETHER WITH THEIR DAUGHTER MARILYN HOFFMAN ’64 AND GRANDDAUGHTERS KAREN HOFFMAN GILHULY ’78, NANCY HOFFMAN ’76, AND SHEILA LEE ’83, THE FAMILY CONTINUES TO SUPPORT FORWARD-THINKING PROGRAMS, TUITION ASSISTANCE, AND THE ARTS. While we are eager to enjoy new spaces that will carry our teaching and learning forward for the next century, at the same time, we remember that our current buildings are more than just a collection of classrooms and offices; they are spaces where generations of students have found their voices and begun to shape their own stories. Rhoades Hall, which holds Castilleja’s treasured “Green Doors” and turns 50 this year, is also an expression of faith in the power of education. Karen Hoffman Gilhuly ’78 Donald Rhoades, who served as Board Chair from 1967 to 1971 and for whom the building is named, believed deeply that education forever changed the path of his life. The first person in his family to graduate from college, Donald left UC Berkeley with a lead on his first job and soon married his wife Dorothy, who was a teacher. Donald and Dorothy watched the world around them in Silicon Valley grow and change, and even as great success came to many who had chosen to walk away from formal education, they remained committed to schools. He supported every aspect of Castilleja, including creating forward-thinking programs, like hosting students from the Bahamas to attend Castilleja for a year. He was an early visionary leader in wanting to open this educational opportunity through tuition assistance. As parents, Donald and Dorothy instilled this commitment to education in their children. One of their daughters, Marilyn Hoffman ’64, attended Castilleja, and her daughters, Karen Gilhuly ’78, Nancy Hoffman ’76, and Sheila Lee ’83 did as well. Castilleja was an important touchstone for them all. The desire to give back to Castilleja also carries through the generations, and Karen has supported the Castilleja community in ways that make a difference around the Circle today. In 2007, she and her husband Ned endowed the Fine Arts Chair because she was in the acapella group here and loved singing. Beyond music, she has an appreciation for beauty. An avid gardener, she recently testified in front of Congress about the importance of preserving and propagating native plants in national parks. The impacts of the all-girls environment have stayed with her to this day. Karen admits that she can also tell if someone has gone to an all-girls school. “It’s something in their confidence and the way they carry themselves,” she explains. Her sister, Nancy, worked at Castilleja from 1989 to 1998, serving as history teacher, US Head, and Assistant Head. Nancy passed away recently, and Karen still values the sense of purpose and belonging that her sister felt working at Castilleja. Like many alums, Karen remains very close to her classmates, and the relationships that they started here have only become richer over time. As someone whose family has been committed to Castilleja through philanthropy for over 50 years, Karen is looking toward Castilleja’s future, knowing that this education helps even more students seize opportunities and add their voices to the conversations that inspire them. 20 | Castilleja School

DIGNITY
LIGHTING THE WAY
FOR ONE EVENING IN APRIL 2022, CASTILLEJA’S CIRCLE TRANSFORMED INTO A LIVELY AND SPIRITED VENUE FOR THE 15TH ANNUAL VIEW360 SYMPOSIUM. It was a truly beautiful night for our community—from the twinkling lights under the palms to the warm conversations after time apart to the inspiring mission to support equity in education. Founded 15 years ago to raise funds for Castilleja’s tuition assistance program, View360 also brings together our community to share learning by hearing from inspiring speakers. Reflecting on the theme of DIGNITY, this year’s speakers were Thomas Friedman, The New York Times best-selling author and foreign affairs columnist; Ailsa Chang, NPR host of All Things Considered; Amy Purdy, Paralympic Silver and Bronze medalist and three-time World Cup medalist; Ashley Williams, anchor for Good Day Sacramento and previous correspondent for Entertainment Tonight; and Ann B. Friedman, founder and Board Chair of Planet Word. To kick off the evening, the Chapkis Dance Family shared their captivating choreography and rich talent. This year’s event raised $1.6 million, enabling Castilleja to deliver on its commitment to advancing socio-economic diversity and creating a learning environment where every student brings a unique perspective. SAVE THE DATE! We can't wait to see you at next year's View360 on March 25, 2023.

SENIOR GIFT
2022 Alumnae Induction Lunch
Meaningful Giving It is customary for the graduating class to form a senior gift committee to lead the process of determining the class’ legacy at Castilleja. This year, the Alumnae office updated the Class Representative role so that the Representatives now begin their tenure as chairs of the Senior Class Gift campaign. Selected by their classmates, Talia Bodner ’22 and Zoya Chughtai ’22 (pictured right) led the Class of 2022 as they thought about their lasting impact around the Circle and selected a class gift. The senior class gift is more than just a fundraiser. It’s also an opportunity to learn about the importance of philanthropy in independent schools and why alumnae support is critical to furthering every aspect of the school. Alumnae from previous classes often play an inspirational and motivational role in the senior gift process. Whether they are offering a matching gift or sharing their reasons for why they choose to give back to Castilleja, the camaraderie is palpable. “Giving is very personal,” shared Andie Navarro Sobrato ’08 during a meeting with the senior class last fall. “Every time I have given a gift, it has been meaningful to me. Just as my Castilleja experience was so formative, it is important that my gift is too.” Andie realized that she would not have attended Castilleja had it not been for the generosity of prior donors who contributed to the Annual Fund or Endowments. Now, she wants to make a difference for future students and encourage others to do the same.
44 | Castilleja School
To better understand how their gift contributes to Castilleja’s finances, the seniors heard from Kathy Layendecker, Associate Head of School for Finance and Operations. Ms. Layendecker described that tuition does not cover the total cost of providing a Castilleja education, and that independent schools rely on fundraising to close the gap. With these facts in mind, the class unanimously voted to dedicate their gift towards tuition assistance. A recipient of tuition assistance herself, alumna Natalie Morin ’10 sent a video message to the class thanking them for their decision to support the student experience. She shared, “Your gift to tuition assistance means more students can come to Castilleja and have that feeling of excitement; you’re paying it forward to the next generation of students.”
STUDENT ART Under the direction of Angélica Ortiz Anguiano ’11, students explore the intersection of fantasy and reality with pencil, paint, and endless creativity. Artists (clockwise from top left): Neva Bapna ’27; Belle Chen ’27; Araika Ramchandran ’25; Zahra Rohaninejad ’25; and Briana Perez ’25.

A FOUNDATION OF GIVING
Decade Club The Decade Club was founded in July 2012 to recognize members of the Castilleja community who have demonstrated a lasting commitment to the school by making gifts for 10 to 19 consecutive years. Their annual gifts provide the critical foundation for the excellence in academics, programs, and teaching that is the hallmark of a Castilleja education.
