RE-IMAGINE AND RENOVATE WITH DAVE SAWICKI & WINTRUST MORTGAGE BENEFITS OF RENOVATION LOANS: • Available to homebuyers as well as current homeowners. • Can be used to create a personalized remodeled living space now.

• May add value and can create instant equity. • Takes into account the after-improved value to determine how much can be borrowed. • Minimizes out of pocket expenses.

The HomeStyle® Renovation Mortgage1 program is a Fannie Mae loan program that provides a convenient way to make renovations, repairs, or home improvements totaling up to 50% of the as-completed value of the property with a first mortgage - rather than a second mortgage, home equity line of credit, or more costly financing method. The FHA 203K Renovation Mortgage2 program is HUD’s primary program for the rehabilitation and repair of residential properties since 1978. HUD has continued to strongly support the program as it falls in line with it’s primary goals of community and neighborhood revitalization and expanding homeownership opportunities.

Castle Building & Remodeling, Inc. is a professional design/build remodeling company that specializes in remodeling. Castle is a second-generation family business with over 3,400 past clients and was founded in 1977 by Marty Schirber. The 2017 Castle Educational Home Tour’s purpose is to educate and inform the public on real everyday remodeling projects, not just the largest or most expensive projects like the luxury tours or Parade shows. On our Tour, Castle will show the public real remodeling projects like mud rooms, laundry rooms, and bathroom remodels that would never be shown on a luxury tour. Remodeling is a huge investment and we understand it takes effort to learn about all your remodeling options. Our Tour is designed to help people make better remodeling decisions for your own remodeling projects, and better understand what a realistic remodel involves, as well as what is achievable within your budget to create a valuable investment in your home. Use this Guide Book to learn more about the homes we are showcasing. It will direct you to the homes that will best help you in planning your project. In each home we have an expert ready to talk to you about the project you are visiting, your upcoming project, and how Castle can help you achieve your remodeling goals.

Solar Projects on Tour Check out these 3 Solor Projects featured on Tour this year:

H18

Grid-tied solar home in Saint Paul 1745 Lincoln Ave, St. Paul, MN 55105 Terry and his wife have always been interested in sustainability and are concerned about the future of our next generation. He focused on orientating his newly constructed garage roof to face North/South to maximize the southern exposure - the best when considering solar panels. Upon completion of his garage, All Energy Solar helped him size and install a 24 panel solar array which eliminated 90% of his annual electric bill.

H19

Grid-tied solar home with batteries in Minneapolis 4543 17th Ave S, Minneapolis 55407 For the Charboneau's solar journey, they were looking to become more independent in their energy needs. Being self-reliant in energy production would help them avoid future uncertainty for their utility costs. Having solar be a clean energy resource also fit their desire to be a better steward of the earth with their choices.

H20

Grid-tied solar home with electric vehicle charging station in Minneapolis 4529 Beard Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55410 The Gustafsons in Minneapolis chose to go solar in an effort to be more sustainable and be a model for their children. Not only is their home powered by solar, their vehicles are too! The environmental impact of going solar was enough to convince them to make the switch, and the economic benefits were the cherry on top.

I SEE FIELDS OF GREEN Castle Building & Remodeling partners with Field Outdoor Spaces to provide their clients with the best urban landscaping in the Twin Cities While many companies shy away from the tight lots and challenging yards in urban spaces, Field Outdoor Spaces has made an art of it. For the last ELEVEN years and counting, Field has worked with homeowners in Minneapolis, St. Paul and other neighborhoods around the Twin Cities to maximize their outdoor living areas. Most projects start with a design and the dedicated design team, led by Karina Greenwood, Dylan Reid and Megan Beissner are especially good at listening and making sure that the end product gives you time to enjoy the space rather than just work to keep it up. Field design balances well-thought-out living areas with plantings that give a sense of a natural and living environment.

give a project budget number right there. To set expectations - a full renovation of a typical 40’ by 30’ backyard can come in between $12,000 and $30,000 depending on the scope. Field offers thoughtful design and professional crews that build high-quality landscapes with minimal impact on your existing plants, structures and your neighborhood. We’re “Employee Powered” meaning that you can count on employees receiving living wages and benefits that allow them to live a healthy life.

Working with a design/build landscape company that specializes in small spaces pays dividends. Field has worked hard to develop unique solutions over the years. While much of the industry focuses on concrete products, Field uses predominantly clay pavers and stone for patios and mixed stone for walls. These materials integrate better in older neighborhoods and are a better long-term investment since they get better with time. With a full metal and woodshop, Field also integrates elements that make the landscape livable and contemporary - like rusted steel planters, cedar pergolas, sun sails and Field-designed trellises. Landscapes are for living and Field can also help design outdoor kitchens, from simple grill tables to more elaborate masonry islands. How about a pizza oven, for instance? Field prides itself on being up front on pricing. During the free consultation, the Field designer will walk through the scope of the project and listen to what you want to accomplish with your renovation. They then describe how they would approach your space and for most projects, 16

Landscapes on Tour Check out these 3 beautiful landscapes featured on Tour this year:

H15

St. Paul Sunken Patio 1400 Hartford Ave St. Paul 55116 This St. Paul client came to us with a drainage issue in their backyard and the desire to create a refuge for themselves as well as bees, butterflies and birds. The sunken bluestone patio with many hand-selected boulders and gravel-work is the perfect environment for native plantings and other flowering plants that attract pollinators.

H16

California Style Backyard 1946 Dayton Ave St. Paul 55104 This backyard addresses the clients need for a clean running surface for their dog as it chases passers biers, human and squirrel, along the fence lines, large play areas for the kids, and great entertaining space that can fit their family of four while being able to accommodate larger groups as well.

H17

Backyard Tea House 957 Goodrich Ave. S. St. Paul 55105 The inspiration for this backyard was derived from the clients recent interior kitchen remodel and their love of Asian aesthetics, from the paver color palette to the custom tea house. The plant palette also reinforces the Asian influence and ties the spacial components together for a cohesive and calming space. Our FieldStudio team designed and built the custom tea house!

Company History

IT'S ALL IN THE FAMILY The History of Castle Castle Building & Remodeling, Inc. is a professional design/build firm specializing in residential remodeling. Castle is a second-generation family business, started in 1977, with over 3,200 past clients. Marty Schirber started the company from his basement and watched it grow over the years. In 2005, Castle moved into its headquarters on Johnson St NE, and two years later Loren acquired Castle Building & Remodeling from his father.

If you hire Castle you will find that our tag line “The Best Value in Professional Remodeling” is our way of life. Our professional team strives to bring a luxury service to the masses. A clearly defined process, direct buying relationships, time tested systems, and efficiency allow Castle to provide a better value and guarantee a better experience. Through our three pronged guarantee we hold ourselves accountable, so you do not have to.

Since then, Castle has seen three more locations open, one in St. Paul and two in South Minneapolis. The unique design studios allow Castle’s interior designers to help clients plan anything from a not so big project all the way up to a whole house reconfiguration. In June of 2012, Castle merged with Camelot Builders, LLC and Aaron Johnson joined the ownership team at Castle as Operations Manager. With the addition of the Camelot employees, Castle can better handle all sizes of remodeling projects. In March of 2014 Castle acquired The Natural Built Home Store and now works to incorporate eco-friendly materials in each project.

As an interior designer, she draws on her DIY roots, incorporating smart design strategies to create spaces unique as each homeowner. She thrives on building relationships with clients and helping guide them as they create their dream home.

Mark Benzell

In 1992, his design/ build firm was chosen by Remodeling magazine as one of their Big 50 contractors of the year. He has been a longtime member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Chapter of NARI from 19912007. In 1994 — as president of the MN chapter — he received the Industry Leader of the Year Award. In 2007, Mark was named as a founding Director for Minnesota GreenStar and served as the Minnesota GreenStar Treasurer and Operations Manager through 2011. There's a lot to consider when redesigning your home. Meet the team that will help you make all the right choices.

Amanda Reinert Remodeling Designer Interior Designer

Amanda was first introduced to the world of design through a fascination with multiple subjects including art, psychology, writing and philosophy. Intent on involving these multiple passions into her future career (and a small push from the game “The Sims”), Amanda decided to enroll in the Architecture program at the University of Minnesota. She received a Bachelor of Design (BDA) in Architecture, settling into the residential remodeling business in 2011. Amanda appreciates the diverse tasks, challenges, colleagues, and clients she works with daily. She states, “There is something aw-inspiring about the entire process, from the first handshake with a homeowner, to the design phase, production, and final walk-through of a completed project… all of which was once a concept, and is born into reality. The design and remodeling process echoes the story and personality unique to each homeowner, which is very rewarding in and of itself.

Amy Hinck

Design Manager, AKBD

Amy received her B.A. in Architecture from the University of Minnesota. She has achieved certification as an Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer through the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), as well as a LEED Green Associate through the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). During her twelve plus years in the remodeling industry Amy has worked as a drafter, designer, project manager and store manager. At Castle, she pitches in wherever needed, keeping the showrooms up-to-date, assisting designers with projects, training new employees and leading design work for the Save-A-Castle division. She develops, edits and maintains companywide processes and documents while also fostering continuing education among the design staff.

Natalie Hanson

Jennifer Falck

Remodeling Designer Interior Designer

Remodeling Designer Interior Designer

Natalie received her B.A. in Interior Design in 2012 from the Art Institutes International Minnesota and has been actively working in the industry ever since. She has been interested in art, architecture and interiors since childhood and discovered the field of interior design as a great avenue for her next professional adventure. With a unique background to her design career, she attended an alternative high school at the Minnesota Zoo — the School of Environmental Studies — where she developed a passion for environmental sciences. Right out of high school, she decided to pursue a career in Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma where she spent two years chasing tornados and attending Sooner football games.

www.castlehometour.com

Jennifer has used her life’s experiences as a catalyst to her career in Interior Design. After attending the University of Wisconsin-Stout for some time, she found that she was ready for the real world of work. And many years of working as an Administrative / HR/ Safety Assistant, she delved into what she wanted to be when she “grew up”. Interior Design seemed to be a perfect fit. Jennifer excelled in schooling, obtained “Student of the Year” for the Interior Design program, graduated with a 4.0, and received her AAS Degree from Century College in 2013. She has been in the Design/ Build industry ever since. Her philosophy with her clients in Design is to create a space that really says who the client is, and to tell her client’s story. One part of design that she is especially passionate for is designing spaces for her clients’ furry friends. She can see beauty in all things and you will always expect the unexpected in her designs.

The clients really enjoy their backyard space, particularly with gardening and spending time with friends and family. Their existing storage shed wasn’t functional for them – it was falling apart. They craved to have a space for storing gardening tools, not being your typical garden shed, and required beautiful design qualities. With their wants and needs, the homeowners came to us to find a solution for a garden shed/reading space. This gardening shed accomplishes those needs. We installed double hung Richlin Windows and a Marvin Integrity sliding patio door, all in a Bronze finish. Cedar corbels and beams, tongue and groove floor planks on their 3’ porch, a cedar trellis to replicate existing pergola, exposed trusses, cedar tongue and groove siding, and a stacked seam steel roof add to the charm of this shed. The finished space is a functional, beautiful garden shed and a space in the city for the clients “escape the urban landscape”, reflect on their day,

ADUs and Tiny Structures 101 The future is in tiny living. But the tiny home craze is a new-ish concept for government, and new zoning laws have been created to keep up with the ecofriendly, Twin City demand. Tiny homes are often referred to as ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units) and are defined by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry as dwellings (a single unit providing complete independent living facilities for one or more persons) located on the same lot as a principal residential structure to which it is an accessory, and that is subordinate in area to the principal dwelling. Tiny homes, like all other houses, are regulated by the 2015 Minnesota Residential Code, which has statewide requirements for things like ventilation, heating, emergency escape and rescue openings, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. In 2014, the City of Minneapolis passed an ordinance to allow Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and define zoning rules. “Allowing accessory dwelling units in Minneapolis is an important way to provide more housing options in our neighborhoods,” said Council Member Lisa Bender. “We have received so many supportive comments from people who want ADUs to be allowed for extended families, to help seniors stay in their homes, and to provide a way to add more housing units gradually in neighborhoods over time.” St. Paul followed with a similar ordinance in 2016 allowing ADUs. See the chart below to compare/contrast the two cities’ detached ADU zoning regulations:

Minneapolis

St. Paul

• The ADU must be smaller in area than the principal residential structure.

• Lot size must be at least 5,000 sq. ft.

• No less than 10 percent of the entire elevation facing an alley or public street shall be windows. • Either the ADU or the main unit must be owner-occupied for the entire calendar year. • No more than one (1) ADU is allowed per lot. • Setbacks (how far from your property lines the ADU must be placed): - Interior side yard: 3 feet - Rear yard: 3 feet - Minimum distance to house: 20 feet

• No more than one (1) ADU is allowed per lot. • The property owner must permanently reside in either the principal unit or the accessory unit. • No more than one family is allowed in both the principal unit and the accessory unit together. A family is a lineally related family plus two, or up to four unrelated persons.

Detached ADU Size Requirements:

• A walkway shall be provided from an abutting public street to the primary entrance of the accessory dwelling unit.

• Minimum Size: 300 sq ft

Detached ADU Size Requirements:

• Maximum Size: 1,000 sq ft

• Minimum Size: None

• Maximum Height: 20 feet or the height of the principal residential structure, whichever is less

• Maximum Size: 800 sq ft

In any municipality, there is an application process you must follow before adding an ADU to your property. Make sure to check with your city to learn all steps and fees required. Download our free app today!

• Only properties within ½ mile of University Ave, between Emerald Street and Lexington Parkway qualify for an ADU

• Maximum Height: lesser of 25 feet or the height of the principal structure

In planning for the family to grow into their new home, the goal of this project was to set the ideal stage for them to do life and make memories. The primary changes desired was fixture and finish updates. Then, through the design phase, several functional improvements were proposed and decided on. Functional improvements include adjusting the kitchen layout and adding organizational components.

Before After

All in all, this project updated the kitchen, the main floor half bathroom, most of the main floor flooring, refreshed the fireplace, and remodeled the second-floor bathroom. This remodel provides numerous upgrades while remaining true to the home’s original character.

What is a Professional Remodeler?

Castle’s professional approach stems from the understanding of how difficult it can be for our clients to live through a remodeling project, as well as the emotional roller coaster ride that remodeling can cause. We believe that how our clients’ experiences are managed is as important as, or more important than the actual finished remodeling product. Castle Building & Remodeling uses a team approach that pairs an experienced Castle Interior Designer with a Castle Project Manager. You will begin by working with a trained Interior Designer who helps you plan the space. After this phase, the team works together to create a detailed set of specifications and proposal. During the production phase, a Project Manager becomes the eyes and ears on site to ensure that the project is executed as planned. Castle has created an industry-leading system to retain control over the process.

Mobile Communications: Each Castle Project Manager is equipped with a smart phone and tablet computer. This unique technology allows instant access to client and trade partner information and ensures that clients can reach their project manager.

Detailed Specification: Our detailed specification serves as a road map for the project and has proven to be extremely reliable and accurate. This system leads to improved communication and helps our customers and craftsmen to deliver an as-designed project with less problems and re-work than our competitors. Design & Planning System: Castle’s system of building the project in a 3D design program before physically building the project removes the mystery for many homeowners. The ability to see the project in 3D before construction eliminates the need for our clients to be able to read blueprints and also leads to extremely accurate estimates. With detailed plans and even more detailed line-item specifications, Castle’s customers have very few surprises during the project. Change Order System: Our documented change order system is easy to follow and leads to accurate tracking of additional costs and credits. Change orders can be e-mailed for review and convenience. Download our free app today!

Contractual Documents: Castle’s professional and balanced contractual documents protect both parties involved.

the start and guarantees that if there is a problem with workmanship, it will be fixed.

Building Performance Guidelines: Castle provides all clients with a very thorough set of building performance guidelines that clearly lay out what to expect from your home and what to do if a warranty issue arises.

No Unforeseen Change Order Guarantee: You can sleep well knowing that there will be no unforeseen or unexpected costs for your project. Because Castle Building & Remodeling plans so thoroughly we can actually guarantee this. Compare this with many companies in the industry that utilize a system based on allowances that fluctuate wildly after the contract is signed leaving clients unsure of project costs and unable to plan financially.

Job Start Binder: At the start of large projects, Castle’s clients receive a 3-ring project binder with information on the care and maintenance of the products used in their project. The Job Start Binder also provides a place to keep plans, invoices, change orders, and other project materials. This binder is designed to answer questions before they arise and helps to keep the myriad of project paperwork organized and tidy. Educational Resources: Over the years, Castle has built a library of educational resources relating to remodeling and older homes. Our in-office library was started to help educate employees but is open and available to the public and customers. We believe in education and have educational resources available on our website as well.

Guaranteed Completion Date: We’re fast, guaranteed, or we pay you. Once again because we plan your entire project well in advance of starting we can guarantee substantial completion to a forecasted completion date. This takes the worry out of the nightmare project that never ends and creates an incentive for Castle and our partners to get your home remodeled quickly so you can get your life back to normal as quickly as possible.

Lifetime Warranty: Castle’s long-term view of serving the client and building a lifetime relationship differs from many contractors who are just trying to survive and only offer the state mandated warranty. Our philosophy is to do things right the first time. Castle’s one-of-a-kind lifetime warranty encourages quality from www.castlehometour.com

Designer: Ashley Hansen | Project Type: Dining Room/Kitchen/Living Room/Three Season Porch Home Style: Rambler | Educational Feature: How to Plan a Kitchen Remodel

Before After

With a growing family the main goal of this project was to create additional living space on the main level. A large, existing three season porch, above the tuck under garage, provided ample square footage to gain four season living space. This allowed the design to remain within the home’s original footprint. About a third of the existing three season porch remained while the rest was converted into a living room. The kitchen space dramatically changed by opening into the new living room, incorporating counter seating, adding an additional 13 linear feet of work surface and an overall replacement of fixtures and finishes. Overall this space now better fits the lifestyle and style of its owners.

Before After

These clients came to Castle Building and Remodeling in need of a Kitchen refresh/remodel. They had lived in their home for over 17 years, and their kitchen was feeling heavy with dark wood millwork and cabinetry, and dated with sterile feeling white tile floor, countertops, and backsplash. They wanted their kitchen have a modern flair to keep up with their family. They had played with the idea of open shelving and really wanted to keep that element in the new space. We took the existing layout of the kitchen and removed all of their existing upper cabinets at their sink, cabinet at their back entrance, base cabinet at their cooktop, appliances (except for their dishwasher and refrigerator), flooring, and countertops. We then replaced their flooring with new Adura Luxury Vinyl Tile, which is easy to clean and is soft to walk on. All cabinetry, whether it be new or existing, was painted Sherwin Williams Extra White. New backsplash subway tile, open floating shelves, and Cambria New Quay countertops are part of the overall design esthetic. Adding a window pass through at the sink, and creating a new interior wall where their refrigerator now sits, brings openness to the space. The new kitchen accomplished what they were looking for - an airy, modern, and beautiful space and that showcases the client’s personality.

Designer: Natalie Hanson | Project Type: Addition | Home Style: Craftsman Educational Feature: Kitchen Cabinets 101

Before After

This addition project added about 375 finished square feet to their existing home with an additional 293 square feet of future finished space in the basement. We removed the old kitchen and added a new, larger kitchen with abundant window and countertop space, a ¾ bathroom, a family room and a mudroom to the home. These new spaces were carefully designed and planned to match the existing character of the home through details like millwork, windows, cabinetry and hardware. The old dining room built in was reused in the new kitchen, and cabinets were integrated seamlessly with the old buffet. In cabinet lighting was added in order to enhance the architectural detail of the buffet and modernize the piece. Classic elements like dark oak were mixed with new painted cabinets, marblelooking quartz counters, sleek new appliances and old style hardware. This mix offers a modern take on craftsmen style tradition. The young couple kept the space interesting through modern lighting and will be adding patterns and texture with future wallpaper.

Kitchen Cabinets 101 1. Wood Species- There are many types of wood species available. 2. Manufacturing Process – A good starting point in selecting your cabinets is to determine the options, availability and specialization your kitchen project timeframe and budget requires. Then, decide if semi-custom or custom cabinets best suit your needs. • Semi-Custom – These cabinets offer more flexible options for storage, design and style as well as wider selection of wood and finish choices. Semi-custom cabinets offer more functionality. • Custom – These cabinets are constructed to fit your kitchen to your specifications. Custom cabinets make use of all available space and are an ideal solution when non-standard sizes are needed to fit irregular-shaped spaces. Delivery time can take up to six or more weeks. Price varies based on size, materials and options. 3. Cabinet Box Materials – Cabinets are often constructed from other materials or combinations of materials. These materials are often combined to provide cost-effective, high-quality durability for the parts of your cabinet that are typically unexposed or behind the scenes. Materials commonly used for cabinet boxes and shelves include: • Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) – An engineered wood made from fine wood particles and glue formed into sheets. MDF is often used as a backing material for laminates and other finishes. MDF is very dense, resists warping and has a smooth surface suitable for veneers, laminates and paints. • Plywood – This engineered wood is composed of layers of veneers stacked and glued together with alternative layers oriented at right angles, providing strength in its length and width. Furniture-grade plywood is used in custom cabinetry. Because heat and moisture cause wood to expand and contract in the direction of the grain, plywood’s cross-grain pattern makes it more stable and stronger than solid wood. 4. Drawers – Make sure to check out the drawers and the hardware on the drawers. Is it soft close? Does the hardware mount on the sides of the cabinets taking up space and making the drawers smaller on the bottom?

5. Accessories & Add-Ons – Get the most out of your kitchen cabinets with accessories that help maximize storage, provide easy access to cabinet contents and reduce clutter on countertops. Pull-out Shelves offer the convenience of quick access to everything on the shelf. wo-tiered Cutlery/Flatware Dividers – Store nearly T twice as many utentils and flatware. Lazy Susans - Make items in corner cabinets accessible with one- and two-tiered spinning shelves. Spice Pullouts – Narrow pull-outs with multiple shelves work great for storing spices in an organized and easy-to-see fashion.

6. Door Design – Once you’ve selected the wood type for your doors, you can choose the design from literally hundreds of styles. While manufacturers offer a wide variety from which to choose, below are some of the most popular. Slab – Offers a flat, clean canvas for hardware with a streamlined and minimalistic style ideal for contemporary and mid-century designs. • Recessed Panel – Similar to slab with minimal style that adds depth and interest. Versatile enough to go with country or modern designs. • Raised Panel – A classic style that blends well with formal classic, traditional looks. • Shaker – known for its simplicity and favored for its warm and casual feel, the Shaker style is ideal for understated looks. • Glass Panel - Door designs can be further enhanced by replacing wood panels with decorative glass, turning storage into displays, especially when paired with in-cabinet lighting. •

Kitchen Layout Basics Planning a kitchen remodel can be a complicated puzzle with many variables and peculiarities. Some considerations that Castle’s professional designers consider include: Finding the perfect placement for the sink, locating the dishwasher, spacing for an efficient work triangle, having ample walk spaces and good traffic flow, cabinet clearances and door swings, and a mix of storage and prep space. Below are drawings and diagrams from the National Kitchen and Bath Association that go into further detail on kitchen planning basics.

The clients came to us looking to refresh their Kitchen and Bathroom. They were happy with their existing layout, but wanted better use of their refrigerator space. The clients were especially concerned with including as many green elements as possible. This included reusing appliances, reusing as much cabinetry as possible, and reusing their Kitchen faucet. Because the cabinetry was in such great condition, we were able to update their look by installing new Full Overlay Shaker Door and Drawer fronts. Two additional green elements to the design of the kitchen space included recycled glass countertops and custom tile backsplash from a local tile artisan – Mercury Mosaics. For the design of the bathroom, we wanted to keep it traditionally charming, with a little bit of Modern flair. We kept the layout the same, but updated the space with new Carrara Marble hexagon tile, white subway tile, new recessed medicine cabinet, and new linen cabinet. The bathroom got a major refresh with new plumbing fixtures and adding a modern streamlined light fixture above the mirror. The overall feel of both spaces is that they are crisp and clean, yet warm and inviting.

Wood from the Hood Wood From The Hood produces high quality lumber and other wood products from the Twin Cities area “Urban Forest”. By reclaiming trees in our local area, WFTH can produce high quality products from a sustainable resource and take one more step toward environmentally sensitive building and remodeling. They offer custom kiln drying and milling to your specifications, in addition to stock lumber and flooring. Unique projects utilizing thick, thin, book matched and wide single boards are their specialty. Products from flooring to millwork, furniture, mantles, picture frames, cutting boards and artistic wood crafting are only some of the uses for this rich resource that until recently, may have been in front of your home. All of their lumber can be tracked to the zip code where it was harvested from. In special cases it can be tracked to a specific address.

Butcher Block countertops are furniture made to last a lifetime. This traditional countertop is often used for utility tables and for kitchen workspaces and are highly customizable with many species of wood and looks available. Durable and long lasting butcher block remains popular.

Nuxite Nuxite is made from crushed walnut shells suspended in a zero VOC resin binder. Walnut shells are a sustainably grown and renewable by-product of annual walnut food crop harvests which impart their characteristics of high density, low absorption, and light weight to Nuxite.

PaperStone PaperStone® is a sustainable composite material made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper, their own PetroFree™ phenolic resins and natural pigments. As PaperStone® ages it will assume a pleasing, lustrous, seasoned appearance that is an inherent characteristic of the material. This is a natural progression of a natural product, resulting in a beautifully soft, rich patina. The aging process takes time and, much like fine hardwood, a deep luster will develop in areas of heavier use.

Educational Feature: Factors to Consider When Choosing a Contractor These environmentally conscious homeowners have always hoped for a light and bright kitchen. Having tried new paint and DIY fixes, they knew the next step was a full kitchen remodel. The new kitchen was designed to incorporate more storage, additional countertop space, and a focus on bringing light within the room. White cabinets, custom handmade recycled glass countertops by Dakota Surfaces, and white backsplash surround the room. Bringing in natural light, two additional windows were added with a view of the back yard and two new solatubes were installed for additional natural light. LED solatube light kits were included, LED undercabinet lighting and an LED entry light complete the light package. To tie in the existing home, the existing hardwoods were refinished and stained to match the front of the home along with new millwork and trim in coordinating styles. The whole space provides not only a functional space but a wonderful feeling of sunshine when you walk into the room.

Historic Remodel Factors to Consider when Choosing a Contractor Licensed and Insured

The contractor is licensed to practice in the State of Minnesota and carries appropriate insurance coverage in case anything goes wrong with the project.

Price

The contractor is upfront and honest with detailed costs respects your budget and works to design the project to fit within these parameters.

Reputation

The contractor has a good reputation with past customers, and their customers refer them to friends and family.

Completeness of the Estimate

The contractor gives you a detailed estimate and explains all allowances and other costs associated with your project.

The Contract

All the necessary facets of the project are spelled out clearly. You won’t have any surprises once the job is started.

Level of Experience

This is a combination of years in the business, typical projects for the contractor, and whether the contractor has been in business long enough to know where their niche is and what they are good at.

Size of the Company

The size of a company can affect the quality of the product. A company that has grown too quickly may not be able to provide the same quality, experience, and attention to detail as a smaller company who has retained the same employees for years.

Job Schedule

The contractor is in charge of the scheduling of the job so your home is disrupted as little as possible. This involves ordering materials and coordinating subcontractors to get in, finish their part of the job, and get out.

Use Employees or Subs

When a contractor works with their own carpenters every day for years, they get a very good idea of their strengths and weaknesses. Contractors who hire employees from a pool of laborers may get new workers on the job every day and may not know how experienced or qualified the workers will be.

Communication

Communication is very important to a successful remodeling project. A good contractor will be easy to get a hold of and will have systems in place to make sure your wishes are noted and followed. They will also make sure everyone on the jobsite knows what is going on.

Customer Service

Business Location

How close is the contractor’s shop or office to you? Working within a defined area can allow a contractor to give more personal attention to each job. This becomes much more difficult if the contractor’s office is across town from the project.

Customer service is how well the contractor serves you and your family. This can include communication, keeping appointments, being punctual, and keeping the customer informed at all times. This may also include educating the customer about their options.

Company History

Creativity

Company history refers to the strength of the business and the length of time doing the same business. Good businesses sustain themselves and build while poor businesses struggle to find a niche and reinvent themselves.

Creativity is an important skill in the remodeling business. Often a contractor is faced with a homeowner who doesn’t know what they want. In this situation, it is up to the contractor to solve the problem and make the space “work.”

Organization on the Job

Guarantees and Warranties

Organization is a major part of a successful remodeling project. The plumbing and electrical work must be completed before the cabinets and countertops can be set in place. Coordination of all the different trades will lead to a smooth project.

Minnesota law mandates that contractors warranty their work for a specified period of time, so technically all contractors have warranties. A good contractor will clearly spell out their warranty in their contract and will provide the homeowner with the expiration dates

Design Services

Craftsmanship

Design services are most important when changing the shape or layout of a space. For a remodeling contractor to have a designer on staff shows that they are committed to creating the best and most suitable space for your project. Download our free app today!

Craftsmanship and attention to detail are very important to make a project fit into your home. Simple details like matching trim and windows can really make a project look like it has always been a part of your home. www.castlehometour.com

Designer: Natalie Hanson | Project Type: Kitchen Renovation & Dormer Bathroom Addition Home Style: Craftsman Bungalow | Educational Feature: How to Plan a Bathroom Remodel This project included adding a 2nd floor dormer bathroom to an attic space that already had 2 finished bedrooms, as well as renovating the kitchen. The kitchen was a full renovation with a new, more functional layout. The cabinets were custom made with traditional details like inset doors and drawers, and stiles that run to the floor to add old character and charm. Soapstone countertops and handmade clay tile add texture and color to the new kitchen. The new layout makes the kitchen feel much larger, although no square footage was added or gained from adjoining spaces.

The attic dormer was completed for a new ¾ bathroom on the upper level where the master bedroom was. This client came to us with the desire to enlarge the bathroom by bumping out into the existing attic space. What a difference that made. This allowed for a separate tub and walk in shower in the new design. No more shower curtains! They also desired general updates in the bath. The tile is exquisite. Cement tiles are on the main floor, penny round on the shower floor, and white subway tile is used on the walls in the shower and as wainscot around the room. The back wall behind the tub also has a beautiful chevron pattern. Chrome Kohler fixtures, a marble top, and white cabinetry finish off this classic style bathroom. The owners put in some sweat equity and did some demolition and painting. They are quite happy with the final look!

H12: 5505 Columbus Ave. Designer: Emily Blonigen | Project Type: Kitchen Remodel | Home Style: Tudor Educational Feature: Design Services

This 1938 South Minneapolis Tudor was ready for a Kitchen remodel that not only improved the aesthetics, but also the function. Luckily, the home was asking for a larger kitchen. By removing what was originally a breakfast room or informal dining, we were able to expand the kitchen for new potential. A new archway was designed to open the new kitchen to the formal dining and living room. We had a small list of “must haves” including a large pantry wall, double oven, and custom bench seating. All new custom cabinetry was designed with practical storage including a lazy susan corner, trash/recycle pull-out, sink tip-out, full extension drawers, shelf pull-outs, silverware organizers, tray tip-up, pocket door appliance garage, a space in the pantry for their vacuum, and a messaging corner. To complement the homes dark woodwork and stone front facade, new porcelain slate tile floors, rich cherry stained cabinets, and natural slate tile backsplash were paired with a neutral Cambria quartz countertop. Fun details were included across the room including a new Kohler cast iron sink, Delta Touchless faucet, pewter knobs and pulls, bronze lighting, and a rich wall color by Benjamin Moore. The homeowners couldn’t be happier and are enjoying the new kitchen with family and friends

The goal of the homeowner was to modernize and expand the existing kitchen, and open up the space between the kitchen, dining room and living room. There was also a need for a large mudroom and a remodeled basement level. Castle was able to remove most of the walls separating the main floor living spaces and design a new contemporary kitchen that provided lots of added cabinet and countertop space. Walnut cabinetry with a painted pantry cabinet complement Caesarstone countertops and Italian backsplash tile. The entire main floor is open and inviting. Almost 60 sq. ft. was borrowed from the garage to create a spacious mudroom area. The mudroom floor is finished in large, beautiful slate tiles. A new bathroom and media area were added to the basement, along with several new windows that bring in wonderful, natural south and east facing light.
