Katy received her Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Architecture from the University of Minnesota College of Design. She has worked in the industry since 2002, with experience in sustainable design, healthcare, and even virtual reality. She enjoys bringing her design skills and knowledge to the table while working closely with homeowners to reimagine the function and look of their home. Tracy came to Castle after gaining nine years of experience in the new home construction industry. She continually pushes the boundaries and adds unique details to make each space feel special, no matter the size.
Her inspirations come from her traveling to over 27 countries such as Prague, Korea, Sweden, Thailand, UK and so many more… Also, living in China and Scotland for a combined time of two years gives her great insight and a unique view on spaces and function.

H1: 3122 Hayes Street NE
Designer: Ashley Hansen | Project Type: Attic + Bathroom | Home Style: Minimal Traditional | Project Style: Transitional | Project Duration: 11 Weeks
Before remodeling, this 1947 home had just two main floor bedrooms and one bathroom. Wanting to use more of the home’s existing square footage, conversations weighed whether to remodel the basement space or attic space. After some discussion, a decision was made to remodel the attic. While the attic had, at one time, been finished, its finishes were dated and its temperature was uncomfortable. Completely gutting the attic has allowed it to be opened up, have a bathroom added, and provided an opportunity to better heat and cool the space.
Before
Now the space is equipped to be multifunctional. Durable storage from MN made Crystal Cabinets make the most of the hallway and bathroom. Two open rooms allow for more living space for occupants to enjoy. Design details such as a cable rail, custom light fixture, live edge wood countertop, and handmade tile represent the owners’ appreciation and admiration for handmade, local beauty.

How to Plan for Bathroom Tile by Clay Squared to Infinity
Step 1 Create a vision for your tile project There are hundreds of tile designs, colors, and concepts for you to choose from and the process can sometimes feel overwhelming. When creating a vision for your tile project we recommend looking at books, magazines, and the internet. We recommend utilizing the National Kitchen and Bath Association, Houzz, and Clay Squared websites.
Step 2 Questions to ask yourself What style do you want to create in your space? Do you own a period home, i.e. Mid Century, Bungalow, Arts & Crafts, Tudor, Victorian, Rambler, or Contemporary? If so, working within a historic era can guide decisions and help narrow choices. Are you more eclectic and want to make room for art in the space? If so, working with themes and color ranges will help the design.
Step 3 Set timelines We recommend that you begin planning for your tile needs near the beginning of your remodel, before other things are installed that could limit your tile choices and design. Order time for tile can be anywhere from 2-8 weeks. (Clay Squared to Infinity handmade tile is complete in about 3-4 weeks.) You will also want to make sure that you have your tile when your tile installer is scheduled, unless you are installing the tile yourself.
Step 4 DIY vs. Architect or Designer Designers are people who understand space, design and color. At Castle, design fees are only 3-5% of a project, but are a necessary part of the process. Their knowledge can save you more than their fees.
Step 5 Plumbing and other obstacles The bathroom is full of switches and electrical outlets. Switches for lights, shower stall and the exhaust fan generally should be located close to their use. Outlets are generally located next to the vanity, high on the wall. A good location for many of these is above the tile, on the painted wall. If you are planning to install a shower with multiple shower heads and thermo-static controls, understand there are no standards for where these will be installed. You will need to consult with your plumber as to their location. Then, plan your tile design around that.
Step 6 Locations for tile In the bathroom there are so many areas recommended for tiling that you’ll understand why 70 - 80 % of a bathroom is often tiled. All shower and shower/tub surrounds should be tiled at least 6” above the shower head. Tubs that have no shower but a surround should still be tiled about 6” above the top of the tub. Tile behind the sink, at least up to 4” above the sink. As far as the toilet, if it is next to a wall or has walls on both sides, we recommend tile all the way around the toilet for easier cleaning. And last but certainly not least, the bathroom floor.

H2: 2800 Arthur Street NE
Designer: Ashley Hansen | Project Type: Kitchen | Home Style: Tudor| Project Style: Transitional | Project Duration: 11 Weeks
With new homeowners, this 1937 home has gotten new updates! The main goals of this remodel were to gain an open layout, add more prep countertop space, incorporate a dishwasher, and update the aesthetics.
Before
While the past layout left much of the kitchen space unused, this new design has added eleven linear feet of countertops. Reconfigured cabinetry offers a new way of organizing and incorporates cabinets dedicated to the back entry. Selections were made to remain true to the home’s original style and blend with the owner’s appreciation for midcentury modern.

Well made, MN-built cabinetry was used to last the home’s lifespan. Classic subway tile, sconce light fixtures, solid wood flooring, and tile flooring pay tribute to the home’s Tudor style. With all this, the variety of finishes provides a contrast that mixes and matches style with color. Overall the finished product is a good representation of the owner’s understanding of quality, appreciation for beauty, and welcoming spirit.

H3: 688 23rd Avenue NE
Designer: Natalie Hanson | Project Type: Kitchen + Mudroom | Home Style: Craftsman / Bungalow | Project Style: Updated Craftsman | Project Duration: 11 Weeks
This growing family was looking for a larger, more functional space to prep their food, cook and entertain in their 1910 NE Minneapolis home. A new floorplan was created by analyzing the way the homeowners use their home. Their large urban garden provides them with an abundance of fresh produce which can now be harvested, brought in through the back door, and then cleaned in the new Kohler prep sink closest to the back door.
Before
An old, unusable staircase to the basement was removed to capture more square footage for a larger kitchen space and a better planned back entry area. A mudroom with bench/shoe closet was configured at the back door and the Stonepeak Quartzite tile keeps dirt from boots out of the cooking area. Next in line of function was storage. The refrigerator and pantry areas were moved so they are now across from the prep and cooking areas. New cherry cabinetry in the Waverly door style and floating shelves were provided by Crystal Cabinets.

Finally, the kitchen was opened up to the dining room, creating an eat-in area and designated entertainment area. A new Richlin vinyl double-hung pocket window replaced the old window on the southwest wall of the mudroom. The overall style is in line with the style and age of the home. The wood and stain colors were chosen to highlight the rest of the original woodwork in the house. A slight rustic feel was added through a highlight glaze on the cabinets. A natural color palette with muted tones – brown, green and soft white- create a modern fresh feel while paying homage to the character of the home and the homeowners’ earthy style.

Working with an Existing Floor Plan
Often, we receive inquiries from potential clients who are considering adding on to their home to enlarge their kitchen. Although this is sometimes the best scenario, other times it can make more sense to work within an existing space. Removing a wall / open floor plan = a larger feeling space. Typical Project Costs – A kitchen remodel that opens up the home is typically about half the cost of adding on.

These homeowners came to Castle looking for a solution that would allow them to stay in their 1946 stucco bungalow in the St. Paul neighborhood that they loved. What was once a young couple’s starter home (1 ½ story with two bedrooms on the main floor and a tiny attic space) was no longer big enough after having two kids.
Before
The need for more room became the family’s highest priority, so they came to Castle for help creating the space they needed for their growing family. With very little headroom in the attic, the decision was made to tear off the roof and add a completely new 2nd story addition with three bedrooms, a bathroom and a commons area. The stairway to the new 2nd-floor space needed to be rebuilt to comply with code requirements and was extended slightly into the dining room below.

The new 2nd story addition gave the homeowners an opportunity to revise the exterior look of the home with vertical board and batten siding above the 1st-floor stucco. A new front entry portico was added to compliment the addition, and the existing masonry chimney was extended above the new roof line. The homeowners took over the work on the project after drywall was installed and did all the interior trim & millwork, tile, flooring, and painting & staining themselves. They’re loving the results!

Sweat Equity
Labor is, by far, the most expensive part of a remodel. Most people think choosing less expensive materials will make a big difference in the final price, but the truth is, completing some of the labor yourself is the best way to cut costs. Castle is proud to be one of the few remodelers that will let you complete some of the labor yourself. The most common parts of a remodel completed by homeowners are demolition and painting (because they're harder to mess up). The homeowners of this 2nd floor addition did about as much of the project themselves as possible! After Castle installed the drywall, they did the rest (tile, hardwood flooring, millwork, doors, hardware, cabinets, countertops and painting) themselves! The graphs below use this project as an example to show how much can be saved with "sweat equity."

This twin home was the perfect home for these empty nesters – retro styled bathrooms, beautiful fireplace and built-ins, and a spectacular garden. The only thing the home was lacking was a functional kitchen space.
Before
The old kitchen had three entry points – one to the dining room, one to the back entry, and one to a hallway. The hallway entry was closed off to create a more functional galley style kitchen that isolated traffic running through and allowed for much more countertop and storage space.

The clients wanted a transitional style that mimicked their design choices in the rest of the home. A medium wood stained base cabinet was chosen to warm up the space and create contrast against the soft white upper cabinets. The stove was given two resting points on each side, and a large pantry was added for easy-access storage. The original box window at the kitchen sink remains, but the same granite used for the countertops now sits on the sill of the window, as opposed to the old wood sill that showed all water stains and wears. The granite chosen (Nevaska Granite) is a wonderful color mixture of browns, greys, whites, steely blues and a hint of black. A travertine tile backsplash accents the warmth found in the wood tone of the base cabinets and countertops. Elegant lighting was installed as well as task lighting to compliment the bright, natural light in this kitchen. A flip-up work station will be added as another work point for the homeowners – likely to be used for their stand mixer while baking goodies with their grandkids. Wallpaper adds another layer of visual interest and texture. The end result is an elegant and timeless design that the homeowners will gladly use for years to come. September 28 - 29, 2019

Slope Solutions Advice from Field Outdoor Spaces
Remodeling ROI on your Investment) Make this summer the last(Return time you mow slope. Front yard slopes are prevalent in many of our landscapes. The inclination is to think of them as “useless” space. Mowing a slope is no fun. Lawns burn out and walls are expensive. What if we told you there was a cheaper, more natural alternative? Field’s slope solution is a self-sustaining community of plants that knit together over time to out-compete weeds, provide habitat for pollinators, and stabilize the soil. We have put together these plant communities to thrive on sunny or shady slopes, and to make it convenient for you, we offer to install these slope solutions on a square foot basis.
The Process We begin the process by applying two rounds of herbicide to the slope approximately two weeks apart. This kills the lawn without removing the turf, which leaves the soil stabilized and doesn’t turn up any weed seed that may be dormant under the existing lawn. Next, we put down a light layer of compost and begin planting. Each plant community includes a short grass-like plant, a short plant with dense foliage, and then 2-3 flowering plants to provide seasonal interest. The compost will be incorporated in to the planting holes and help the old turf decompose in place. Finally, we’ll cut a clean edge and apply a layer of mulch over the planting
Maintenance By creating a community of plants that work together, over time maintenance requirements will be lower than a traditional garden. The most maintenance occurs in the first 2-3 years as the plants become established. •
•
How do I get started? 1. What are the area measurements? 2. Is the area in the sun or shade? 3. Contact Field with this info & they’ll give you a price.

Remove weeds every couple weeks – This frequency early on helps you become familiar with the intended plants in your space so you can quickly identify any uninvited guests. As the plants grow, they will begin filling in those open spaces and out-competing weeds, resulting in less weeding time for you! Water weekly – During the first growing season, watering is essential to establish your plants. During years 2 & 3, you should only need supplemental water during extended hot or dry periods. Augmenting – As the community matures, there may be a need to fill in any “holes” with some extra plants and ground covers. We’re available with our toolbox of recommended plants to keep your space full and thriving. Mulching – Mulch is included as part of the instillation. After that, you can choose either a: 1. Trowel & Mulch approach – digging out weeds & mulching every 2 or 3 years 2. Hoe & Augment approach – quickly hoe out annual weeds and augment with ground covers

Designer: Emily Blonigen | Project Type: Kitchen + Bathroom | Home Style: 1 3/4 Story with Porch | Project Style: Traditional | Project Duration: 12 Weeks
This 1907 home in the Ericsson neighborhood of South Minneapolis needed some love. A tiny, nearly unfunctional kitchen and leaking bathroom were ready for updates. The homeowners wanted to embrace their heritage, and also have a simple and sustainable space for their family to grow. The new spaces meld the home’s traditional elements with Traditional Scandinavian design influences. In the kitchen, a wall was opened to the dining room for natural light to carry between rooms and to create the appearance of space. Traditional Shaker style/ flush inset custom white cabinetry with paneled front appliances were designed for a clean aesthetic. Custom recycled glass countertops, white subway tile, Kohler sink and faucet, beadboard ceilings, and refinished existing hardwood floors complete the kitchen after all new electrical and plumbing.
Before
In the bathroom, we were limited by space! After discussing the homeowners’ use of space, the decision was made to eliminate the existing tub for a new walk-in shower. By installing a curbless shower drain, floating sink and shelving, and wall-hung toilet; Castle was able to maximize floor space! White cabinetry, Kohler fixtures, and custom recycled glass countertops were carried upstairs to connect to the main floor remodel.

Creating anEmotional Outdoor Kitchen The Homeowner's Roller Coaster
To say, "having your home remodeled is a big deal," is quite an understatement! Going through a home renovation (especially when it comes to your kitchen or only bathroom) can be one of the most stressful things a person endures, often because it throws off your routine for months. The rooms you were used to using every day for simple tasks are suddenly unavailable and you find yourself doing dishes in the bathtub. The best thing you can do to prepare yourself for a remodel is to set reasonable expectations. See the timeline above for a glimps into what your emotions will do. H11: 5408 Colfax Avenue S
Designer: Katy Dale | Project Type: Whole House + Landscaping | Home Style: 1.5 Story Cape Cod | Project Style: Contemporary | Project Duration: 14 Weeks
This 1 ½ story in south Minneapolis had an attic space the homeowners used for their master bedroom, but they had challenges typical of this style home – no master bath upstairs, terrible thermal control, and limited storage. The main level bath was also dated and in need of an update. By adding a dormer and completely reconfiguring the attic layout, this upper level now takes advantage of every square foot. Thermal issues were resolved by insulating with spray foam and conditioning the space with a ducted mini-split.
Before
A master bath was added, complete with a heated floor, 6’ vanity, and glass tiled backsplash. The walk-in shower includes a bench, recessed niche and frameless glass surround, keeping the space feeling open and bright. Finally, the new master closet is large and fully lit with new LED lighting, borrowed light through the frosted master bath door, and plenty of wall space for the homeowner’s closet system.

On the main level, the original bath was completely remodeled and expanded into the hall linen closet. Castle remodeled the kitchen in 2013, adding large French doors connecting the main level directly to the back yard, landscaped by Field Outdoor Spaces. With the attic and main level bath now remodeled, this home has been transformed to complement the way we live today and has a fresh look to reflect the homeowners’ modern aesthetic.

Master Suite Upgrades and Options
In-Floor Heat
Additional Shower Head
Cozy is the best way to describe the warm feeling this upgrade will give you on a cold morning.
Adding another shower head is a luxury that’s getting more popular. Whether the extra shower head will be used to help clean the shower, or just to create a more relaxing shower, you won’t be disappointed with your decision.
Typical cost for electric in-floor heat with programmable thermostat (includes cost of self-leveling poured floor): $1,500
Typical cost for an additional shower head: $1,050+.
Frameless Shower Door
Fireplace
These are a great option if you are going for a seamless look, and can also minimize cleaning. Typical cost for a frameless shower door and panels: $1,300 - $3,000
Nothing says "I'm king of the castle," like a fireplace in your master suite.
Sky Light / Sola Tube
Soaking Tub
Let there be light! Sky lights typically let in 5x the light of traditional double hung windows.
We all know the modern day timestarved American doesn’t have time for a bath, but you’re not average. Make time to relax in a soaking tub, whether it's a fixed up claw foot or the newest technology from Kohler.
Typical cost for a skylight: $2,840+. Typical cost for a Sola Tube: $1,000 +
Typical cost to install a gas fireplace with tile and a mantle: $8,000
Typical cost for a soaking tub, tub filler, tub waste and overflow: $5,000 +
His and Hers Sinks
Heated Towel Warmer
No fighting over who gets to brush their teeth. Two sinks is a little extravagant and studies have shown most couples get ready at different times and could live with one sink, but for some (who listen to their Realtors) this is a must-have upgrade.
When using a hydronic system, it’s really more like a radiator used to heat the room, that you can also hang your towels on. But even the electric version gives you warmth and comfort unparalleled.
Typical cost for adding a second sink, faucet, rough-in plumbing and second countertop cut out. $2,400+
Typical cost for a hydronic towel warmer: $3,000+ Requires removing a radiator, drain boiler, installing new tubing & pump on the boiler, and re-fill system after the towel bar is installed. Typical Costs for an electric towel warmer: $982+

Designer: Mark Benzell |Project Type: Kitchen + Bathroom + Addition | Home Style: Tudor | Project Style: Eclectic | Project Duration: 17 Weeks
As with many residents of the Armitage neighborhood in South Minneapolis, the owners of this 1940-built Tudor home love where they live. So much so, they were willing to commit to a large, whole-house remodel in order to stay put. By redesigning the first-floor layout, Castle was able to create a more open space. Walls previously separating the kitchen and dining room were removed and replaced with more countertop space in the form of a seated peninsula. The kitchen was also updated with new granite countertops, more backsplash tile to match the existing, and partial new cabinetry to match existing.
Before
New hardwood flooring was installed in the kitchen to match the existing dining room. The size of the dining room was then almost doubled by removing an adjacent first-floor bedroom. A new sunroom was added in the back which opened the space even further.

Inflatable Castle Jumper On Site! H13 5532 Richmond Curve
Taking good care of this home and taking time to customize it to their family, the owners have completed four remodel projects with Castle. Showcased projects include their kitchen, wet bar, and basement. Not on tour is a second-floor addition including a master suite.
Before
Projects on display have been completed to make better use of the original space. A more functional kitchen now offers ample workspace and cabinet storage. Converting a closet into a wet bar allows for better hosting in the dining room. And finishing a portion of the basement to make a living room and give the home an additional bathroom allows for the family and guests to have more personal space. With every project, solid oak woodwork has been installed, classic countertops and traditional tile selected, and glass knobs used. Overall, this home is suited not only to the home’s original character; it is also suited to house the owners’ family for a lifetime.

H14: 1967 Drew Avenue S
Designer: Mark Benzell | Project Type: Outdoor Kitchen + Screen Porch + Landscaping | Home Style: Modern | Project Style: Modern | Project Duration: 12 Weeks
This Contemporary home, near Cedar Lake, built in 1900, was originally a corner store. A massive conversion transformed the home into a spacious, multi-level residence in the 1990’s. However, the home’s lot was unusually steep and overgrown with vegetation. In addition, there were concerns about soil erosion and water intrusion to the house. The homeowners wanted to resolve these issues and create a much more useable outdoor area for family and pets.
Before
Castle, in conjunction with Field Outdoor Spaces, designed and built a large deck area in back yard of the home, which includes a detached screen porch and a bar & grill area under a cedar pergola. Trex decking was used throughout, along with red cedar porch, pergola and privacy lattice detailing.

The front entry of the home was also updated to include a large, open porch with access to the newly landscaped yard. Cable railings add to the contemporary style of the home, including a folding gate feature at the top of the front steps to contain the family pets when they’re let out into the yard. Decking Material Options
In the previous educational feature, you learned that installing a wood deck has a higher return on investment than composite wood decks. That definitely has something to do with the fact that they cost more! Here are some other differences between decking material options that will help you make the best decision for your home.
Composite Pros: • No maintenance required • Bendable - allows for unique decking designs and curves • No visible fastners
Pros: • Return on investment is higher than composite • Softer feel, more natural look • Stainable - you can change the color years down the road
Cons: • Expands and contracts a lot, so large spacing in needed • Very dense, so it gets very hot in direct sunlight • More expensive (approx. 3x more than wood material options)
Cedar Cons: • Requires maintenance every couple years • If not maintained, will gray with age • Has the shortest life span of the 3 options (15-20 years)
KDAT
(Kiln Dried After Treatment)
Pros: • Return on investment is higher than composite (approx. same cost as cedar) • No maintenance • More stable than the other two
Cons: • Only comes in 1 brown color • Color will fade slightly over time • Cut edges don't match the brown color unless stained
*Aaron Johnson's favorite is KDAT, by far... It was a struggle for him to come up with 3 cons. www.castlehometour.com

Front Porch Feel (Minus the Porch)
H7: 2109 Wellesley Ave. This Mac-Groveland yard features a backyard pocket garden and front foundation and slope plantings. The area around the patio is highlighted by a colorful bubbling water feature, surrounded by selected perennial plantings. The front slope is filled with low-maintenance plantings that resolve the challenge of mowing the front slope. This project is another example of solving a troublesome slope without costly walls.
H10: 5141 14th Ave S. This South Minneapolis project proves that “natural” and “small” go perfectly together. The Castle-designed open porch area is wrapped in a natural trap boulder wall, outcrop steps, stonework and plantings. The new cedar fence provides privacy for this perfect pocket yard. A small flagstone patio is a landing spot for enjoying the sun or small firepit.

Front Porch Feel (Minus the Porch)
H11: 5408 Colfax Ave S. Have a front yard slope that you are tired of mowing? Artistic stonework accents this Kenny neighborhood front-slope, while low-growing grasses and perennials hold back weeds and provide yearlong interest. The front yard includes a rain garden with a wood bridge walkover that leads to a backyard with an outdoor kitchen and a bright blue sun sail covered dining
area. Don’t miss the custom cor-ten gas firepit set in a rustic gravel sitting area.
H14: 1967 Drew Ave S. A candidate for “most dramatic before and after landscape” – we converted this sloped urban lot from a scrubby, wooded and unusable yard to a generous space for dogs, kids and entertaining. A large yard area was recovered by cutting into the slope and pouring a concrete wall. Trees and masses of ornamental grasses create privacy and visual interest while keeping maintenance low. The irrigation system waters lawn, beds and the two large cor-ten planters (front and back). The landscape lighting makes this landscape captivating at night.

H15: 5256 Drew Ave S. In June 2018, the Averbecks updated their beautiful south Minneapolis Tudor home with a grid-tied solar array. Having access to a variety of financing options helped to make the switch affordable, and the All Energy team was able to design a system that is designed to produce over 11,000 kWh per year.
H16: 1907 Bohland Ave. The Lord’s Cape Cod home in Highland Park featured a durable steel roof that worked well for installing solar.
