2013-2014 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
CEO Focus Reflecting on 2013, I usually look back on the different programs and events which the Chamber volunteers and staff have worked on to bring to the community, but I thought instead I would share some of the peculiar and actually rather funny questions poised to your Chamber staff. My top 10 amusing questions poised are: #10
Pam Ridler, CCE CEO/President Castle Rock Chamber
#9
A disgruntled new resident—“It’s freezing outside (30 degrees); what’s the Chamber going to do about it?” I could have said that we’re going to open all our doors and windows in the office and turn up the heat!
I absolutely love our visitors who come to Castle Rock, but when they show up at our Visitor Center in July, with skis on their roof racks, “where’s the nearest ski resort?” It's 85 degrees outside, I really have to laugh. I think I should have told them to jump back on I-25 head north east to DIA, park your car, take your luggage and ski's, hop on the next flight to Dubai, I’ve been told they have an indoor Mall with a ski hill.
#8
Sometimes it gets really interesting when we get phone calls from “the south” being able to understand their twang--My favorite call was an elderly woman calling to find out where she could get "spade-dead" for her dog. I thought she needed a hardware store.
#7
We had someone a week or two ago call wondering how to cook chicken in tin foil.... Really?
#6
How about the man who called and asked “When do the deer in Colorado turn into elk?”
#5
By the way, “How many pool tables do we have in town?”
#4
Recently a young woman who said she just moved here from Alabama asked for instructions “how do I convert my grandma’s peanut brittle recipe to high altitude?” I felt I really needed to be up front with her, everyone around here knows my husband does all the cooking in my house. I’ll pass that question on to him.
#3
How about when the lady who spent the day in Blackhawk and now wants to know how she could go about returning a jackpot she won be cause its against her religion to gamble?
#2
Now what do you think of this one? A guy wants to buy a bong and bath salts as a Christmas present—he said “I heard everything is legal in Colorado”. I think I should give him Chief Cauley’s phone number.
#1
Here’s my last one “Give me a rancher that will rent me a cow”. What?, do they need fresh milk? Commissioner Partridge, can you please help them out?
Just a day in the life of our Chamber staff—looking forward to more intriguing questions and encounters in 2014—Happy New Year to you all!!

Farewell to Susan, We Wish Her Well! It is with a heavy heart that we must say goodbye and good luck to our Membership Account Executive, Susan O’Malley at the end of the year. A note from Susan... I wish to extend a fond farewell to all my Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce friends, acquaintances and fellow staffers. After three years as the Membership Account Executive here at the Chamber, I am stepping away to return to my home state of Illinois and care for one of my sisters suffering from dementia. It has been a distinct pleasure to have worked in the Chamber, meeting hundreds of business people, attending dozens of events, and experiencing firsthand all the benefits Chamber membership affords. It has truly been an exceptional time, and I will miss all of you. Thank you for three memorable years here in the special town of Castle Rock.

Chamber Announces Ambassador of the Year, Betty Graf Betty moved to Castle Rock six years ago and loves it here! She grew up in small towns in Kansas and loves the fact that Castle Rock has that same small town feel. After living with her husband overseas for nine years, Betty was ready to settle down and live a quieter life in Colorado. Betty joined the chamber five years ago and is in her fourth year as a Chamber Ambassador. She finds being an Ambassador a great fit since she loves meeting new people and developing relationships with business owners. Betty has utilized the many Chamber networking events such as the Leads referral groups to promote her business with great success. For Betty, it’s a way for her to be “plugged” into the business community. As a Chamber Ambassador, Betty is a part of a professional group of people dedicated to helping others grow their businesses. To her, it’s what life is about - it’s about what she can do for others. Betty is the head of her own marketing company
through Reliv International. Reliv is a 25 year old food science company, committed to making a difference in people’s lives. We all want to have great health and feel amazing!! Through Reliv’s line of patented nutritional supplements that can become a reality! Reliv offers people hope for a better quality of life. It’s really Nutrition Made Simple!! As a retired nurse, this is another perfect fit for Betty! Betty and her husband, Harlan, recently built their ranch and dream home and love having their three grandkids out to the ranch. They especially love spending time with their five horses. It’s a pretty ideal life, if Betty says so herself! Recently, Betty was named our Ambassador of the month, and now, with great pride, we would like to announce and congratulate Betty for her enormous contributions to the Chamber and honor her as our Ambassador of the Year. Thank You Betty for all you Ambassador Program is Sponsored By: do for the Castle Rock Chamber. We greatly appreciate you!

Seven Reasons EVERY Business and Non-Profit Should Be A Member of the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce 1. Visibility. Fully leverage the chamber to get an edge in a highly competitive and crowded market. By belonging to the chamber, your business stands out from the competition. 2. Access. When you join the chamber and actively get involved you’ll discover that meeting prospects who may have an interest or who can refer you to key contacts you’re trying to reach, is a huge benefit of membership. From being on committees, serving as an ambassador, or attending specific events where prospects are likely to be, you’ll find yourself in situations where you can identify and meet decision makers face-to-face versus making cold calls. 3. Ongoing training and education. There’s no other organization in America that delivers timely programs at such an affordable price as the local chamber. The chamber provides it’s members with the essential information, infrastructure, and resources required for successful business development and growth.
Member to Member Discount Program
4. Networking. From seminars, leads groups, luncheons to business expos and various business and community committees, there’s absolutely no excuse for not being able to meet new contacts, referrals and people who can help you with ideas and additional ways to grow your business. The chamber gives you several different venues to meet new people.
As part of your investment with the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce, you are eligible to participate in this program!
5. Low cost advertising opportunities. As far as visibility at the local level, a chamber offers a wide range of affordable advertising options and sponsorship packages for just about every business or non-profit, regardless of how big or small their budget may be.
You may offer savings or items of value that represent your business and take advantage of those offers from fellow members.
6. Advocacy. Are your employees and customers local? Are taxes and school systems important to finding and retaining a high quality work force? These are key areas that the chamber researches, lobbies and routinely discusses with local and regional government units, politicians and the media to keep people up to date on central issues of importance pertaining to their membership and the community.
This is part of the Chamber’s ongoing efforts to help our members save. By participating in this program, you are furthering the goal of strengthening our local economy .
7. Money saving discounts. If you fully leverage the cost saving discounts ranging from health insurance, office supplies, to discounted phone service to other items your business currently uses or will need, it’s not uncommon for a small business to easily find enough savings in the first 30-60 days upon joining with endorsed providers or member to member discounts to recoup most, if not all of their membership dues. Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) at Chick-fil-A Local Young Entrepreneurs Learn the Ropes of Business from Unique Castle Rock Entrepreneurs On a recent Monday evening, students from the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) hosted at Castle View High School, took a field trip to Chickfil-A in Castle Rock to learn about the many different restaurant types, including quick-service franchises and other forms of operation from owner/operator Joe Weber. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!), an innovative program that guides students through the process of starting their own real business, is inviting local businesses to be involved in this exciting program as business mentors and sponsors for this year’s YEA! class, which meets at Castle View High School. Students work in close cooperation with local leaders of industry, community members, and educators to develop ideas and objectives, write business plans, pitch potential investors, obtain funding, register their business, develop their brand identity and much more. By the end of the class, students own and operate fully functioning businesses that can be carried on after graduation. Students learn to make a job--not just take a job. During the course of the nine-month program, more than 30 local businesses and over 55 individuals will become involved with YEA! at various levels. Weber, a life-long entrepreneur, will be joining the students in January as a mentor, where he’ll be paired up with a student and help that student better understand their concept, write a business plan, identify their target audience and provide all around support.

In 2008, YEA! “spun-off” from the University of Rochester, where it was formed in 2004 with support from the Kauffman Foundation, to create its own not-forprofit corporation, YEA! Inc., which is currently launching sites in colleges, universities and high schools across the country to provide comprehensive, exciting entrepreneurship education, leadership development and innovation training to youth, providing them with skills they need to succeed in the 21st Century. Developing Leaders-Leadership Douglas County December’s Class Topic: Government Mayors’ and Managers’ Panel: Mayor Huff (Castle Pines), Mayor Waid (Parker), Matt Krimmer (Larkspur Town Manager) and Jerry Flannery (Highlands Ranch Community Association General Manager and CEO) December’s topic for the Leadership Douglas County class was Government. The class and presenters braved a frigid and snowy morning, which began with a “Government 101” civics lesson presented by Parker’s Patrick Mulready. “Inspiring Integrity” was the topic of the Leadership Skill, as speaker/author/professor Corey Ciocchetti challenged the class to lead purpose-driven, ethical lives. Mayors and City Managers visited the class for a panel discussion on their roles within their communities, how the business of their municipalities is conducted and the concerns facing Douglas County. The afternoon was spent at the Justice Center in Castle Rock, meeting Judges King and Meissner-Cutler in the courtroom and hearing from District Attorney Brauchler and Public Defender Emily Valdez and their unique perspectives on the delivery of justice in Douglas County.
“Another great day
of information from our government leaders. The mayors' perspectives and the differences between the jurisdictions was very interesting.” Brad Heyden, Participant B E

County caters to country folk through web, new webpage addresses rural residents’ concerns A new page on the Douglas County website has designs on becoming a one-stop shop for rural residents and those considering moving into the area. “The goal was really to provide a warehouse of information for people moving to the rural areas,” said Douglas County planning supervisor Jeanette Bare. “It is a much different lifestyle for people coming from urban environments.” The project began with the initiation of a 30-person rural framework committee appointed by the Board of County Commissioners in 2009, made up mostly of rural residents as well as some developer consultants. Town Council directs preparation of ordinance to remove all bans on open carry
Voting unanimously, Town Council on Dec. 3 directed Town staff to prepare an ordinance repealing the current ban on the open carrying of firearms in Town facilities and parks. The first reading of this ordinance will be Jan. 21. Town Council was considering the first reading of changes to the 2003 ordinance that bans the open carry of firearms when posted at the direction of the Town Manager. The changes on the table during the Dec. 3 meeting would have transitioned this decision-making authority to Town Council and clarified that the open carry of firearms is banned in Town-owned buildings, all Town parks, the Recreation Center, Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course, Town open spaces and Town trails. Big Castle Rock retail development deal close to being completed Castle Rock is one step closer to finalizing a financial agreement with Alberta Development Partners on what will be the town's largest master planned commercial development. Alberta is proposing a 900,000square-foot commercial development and about 350 residential units on 200 undeveloped acres directly west of the Outlets at Castle Rock, east of Colorado 85 and north of Meadows Parkway, which is being extended from the east and is slated to provide another interchange at Interstate 25. The project is called the Promenade at Castle Rock. "It's a very favorable agreement to all parties involved," Provost said (founding principal of Alberta). "It allows us to develop the project and allows the residents to have a great share in the tax revenue." The agreement was the product of negotiation between Alberta and the town in which Town Manager Mark Stevens said the developers ended up getting less than they originally wanted. Under the agreement, the town will share 27.5 percent of new sales tax revenues generated for up to 25 years to Alberta. Read more http://www.castlerock.org/ chamber_news3.htm 19
