Human R esources was the topic of the March 13 session of the Chamber’s Business Boot Camp. The business owners in the class took an in-depth look at what m akes a great employee and what makes a great employer. Instructor Mike Tafoya of Estrada Strategies, walked the class through a very valuable exercise that describes the stages of an employee’s career with a company and the appropriate combination of direction and supervision at each stage. Class members also benefited from a discussion of real life and hypothetical employee relations situations. The final portion of the class was devoted to a discussion of job descriptions and strategic ways they should and should not be used i n the recruiting process. This was the final instructional class for the 2011 – 2012 Business Boot Camp. On April 3 the graduates will present their unique business growth implementation plans to their classmates, mentors and distinguished Castle Rock community leaders. They will receive valuable feedback and guidance as they prepare to lead their businesses to the next successful level. Planning is underway for the 2012 -2013 Business Boot Camp beginni ng this Fall.

This is a Castle Rock Chamber-sponsored program for local businesses. If you have an i nterest in receiving more informatio n abo ut Business Boot Camp, contact Pam Ridler at 303-688-4597 or email pam@castlerock.org or visit http://www.castlerockeg.com

For additional details, including the event agenda and a link to the live audio feed, please visit http://www.douglas.co.us/treasurer/. The Douglas County Demographic Summary 2012 has been updated and is available online. It is a brief narrative describing demographic changes from the past year. http://www.douglas.co.us/demographics/documents/ DCGrowthSummary.pdf

Free APA Class! Like many quality academic institutions, Webster University requires graduate students to follow APA (American Psychological Association) guidelines for written assignments. Among other things, the APA system covers: • Writing quality • Proper reference and citation (including electronic, audiovisual and online sources) • Appropriate presentation of numerical and graphical data • Plagiarism, copyright, and permissions issues Familiarity with this material is required, and it affects your grades. Please join us for a FREE class on this important topic, and feel free to bring a friend!

The Population & Development Report is undergoing significant changes. During the transition, most of the chapters will not be updated in their current format. The Douglas County Demographic Summary 2012 is one of the only chapters to remain the same.

S aturday, April 14 Two sessions available: 10am-12:00pm at the DTC campus, room 530 or 1-3pm at the Castle Rock Chamber boardroom. S pace is limited and RS VP is required.

Did you know… T he Douglas County population estimate for January 1, 2012 is 291,083 persons, a 0.9% increase from the previous year’s estimate of 288,430.

Please RSVP to christielove37@webster.edu.

The first results for ne xt month’s Town Council ele ction alre ady are in. District 1 candidate and current Mayor Paul Donahue and District 6 candidate and current Mayor Pro Tem Clark Hammelman were running unopposed, and nobody filed to run as a write-in candidate against them by the March 2 deadline. Therefore, Town Council voted to cancel the election in those districts and deemed Donahue and Hammelman reelected to their Council seats. This means that voters in District 1 (western half of The Meadows) and District 6 (Plum Creek and Crystal Valley Ranch) no longer will receive ballots at midmonth so that they can vote in April, resulting in a cost savings to the Town of about $8,100. Council last month adopted an ordinance that allows for the cancelation of elections in districts where there are no more candidates than there are vacancies. In that case, unopposed candidates are deemed elected. Because there are multiple candidates in Districts 2 and 4, the election still is on in those districts. CREATING LEADERS

Leadership Douglas County

March’s Topics: Ene rgy/Wate r and Health Care /Seniors Days The Leadership Douglas County class met twice in March to become more educated about what’s happening in Douglas County in the areas of water, energy, health care and senior living. With so much happening in the areas of water and hydraulic fracturing (Fracking), as well as the recent growth of health care and senior facilities in Douglas County, this day was filled with people who were experts in their respective fields and the class gained a valuable overall picture of some very complex issues. “ As a westerner, you can’t help but be interested in natural resource protection and management. Understanding energy and water issues means that you’ll understand two of our most precious assets.” (Julie Britti, Class of 2012) “Water, in general, is a huge issue within our western state’s region. Today’s discussion of the Denver Water Basin and supporting aquifers from the scientific, legal and community issues aspects gave us an excellent overview of one of our most contentious issues which will impact us as future leaders.” (Mike McNairy, Class of 2012)

Leadership Douglas County is accepting applications!

“ Learning about healthcare from a regional standpoint gave me a better understanding of Colorado’s role in medical services from a patient, insurance and hospital perspective.” (Kristen Knoll, Class of 2012)

Leadership Douglas County is applications for our next program.

Steering Committee Planners: Steve Labossiere and Jenni Brown Class of 2011

Area citizens who are looking for hands-on education regarding community resources are encouraged to consider applying to Leadership Douglas County, a program that assists those who want to become more knowledgeable about the area in which they live.

Mywe dding Expands Globally Into the Unite d Kingdom We dding we bsite mywe dding.com opens 18 local communities in the Unite d Kingdom. Mywedding has launched into the United Kingdom with 18 local communities in England. The growth overseas also includes locally developed free wedding we bsite designs, and UK inspiration and content partners. Expansion into the UK was the clear next step and an easy decision as the company’s first overseas expansion effort. Mywedding has already been providing free wedding we bsites and planning tools to thousands of UK bridal couples who have been requesting community access to local advertisers and resources in their area. “ Over the last couple of years mywedding had to significantly evolve to remain relevant to our two very different customer segments (couples and advertisers)”, Woody Pastorius, CEO of mywedding said. “ Instead of cutting costs, we invested in our products, hired more staff, took calculated risks, made price considerations, and eliminated weaker offerings – we positioned ourselves for the future and ultimately became a better company. We are a company that is successfully combining local synergy with global reach.” Since launching the first community site in January of 2003, myseattlewedding.com, mywedding has grown to become a collaborative bridal destination network of more than 1.5 million unique monthly visitors where focus is on connecting engaged couples with local, national and international advertisers. Mywedding now hosts over 100K local wedding vendor listings in 205 local communities across the United States, six communities in Canada and 18 communities in England. Pastorius added, “ Our global reach ultimately provides for a higher return on investment for our advertisers, while bringing our bridal couples inspiration from around the world.” Growth into England is the first big step in mywedding’s exciting journey towards becoming the most trusted wedding resource for brides and wedding professionals worldwide. In the upcoming months, mywedding will continue the expansion into the United Kingdom, launching new local communities in Scotland and Wales in April, and Ireland in May. About mywedding. Founded in 2002, mywedding has quickly become one of the largest and most trusted online wedding planning resources bringing bridal couples inspiration from around the world. As one of the most comprehensive online wedding media channels, mywedding offers local wedding vendor communities, honeymoon and destination wedding resources, inspirational content, free wedding websites and blogs to its users. Utilizing proprietary Internet technology for publishing and managing advertising listings, mywedding makes wedding planning easy and fun for couples while providing highly targeted local advertising to wedding vendors.

The 2nd Annual “Filling The Pantr y Food Drive” is complete! We surpassed our goal of 1000 pounds and raised 1800+ pounds!!! Great Job! A special thanks goes out to those who helped with the drive. We couldn’t have done it without the help and support of our volunteers. We would also like to thank Sprouts for donating 2000 bags for the neighborhood pickup, and all the businesses that volunteered as drop off locations, especially the P.S. Miller Library that was our number one business in raising food.
