Business of the Month
The Castle Rock Chamber is pleased to announce its June recipient for Business of the Month - Flying Horse Catering. Essential criteria for recognition are the length o f time a business has supported the Chamber through membership - at least 10 consecutive years or longer - as well as its participation and sponsorship. A full-service catering company operating throughout the Douglas county and metro Denver areas, Flying Horse has been a Chamber member 16 years, 4 months and 4 days. The catering company has continued to grow and flourish, due to the owners’ dedication to high culinary and service standards. Flying Horse Catering serves the Front Range and beyond, but its roots are deep in the Castle Rock community where the owners live, work and are committed to serving community residents and being involved in memorable life events. In 2011, the catering enterprise moved their commercial kitchen to 703 North Wilcox Street in Castle Rock to better meet client needs and provide a store front for their services and take-out menus. Their sterling reputation with clients for quality food and service, has earned Flying Horse Catering a preferred caterer status at many venues, including the Douglas County Events Center, as well as catering privileges at many other venues. Day in and day out, you can count on the Flying Horse Catering team to deliver Castle Rock its best! The Castle Rock Chamber is pleased to recognize this community champion. Call them for your next party, special occasion or business meeting – 303.688.4321 or online at flyinghorsecatering.com

Town & COUNTY Town Website adds New “Transparency” Feature to promote Accountability to Residents
Castle Rock Police officers recognized for outstanding service
The Town’s website, CRgov.com, changes in small ways almost every day. Recently, though, three major changes were implemented on the site. All of the changes help foster transparency of Town government to the public.
Castle Rock Police Department members who demonstrated exemplary performance during the past year were recognized for their efforts Wednesday during the department’s annual awards ceremony.
The most major change was the addition of a transparency portal, which can be accessed via the brown Transparency Portal button on the left side of every page on the website, or at CRgov.com/transparency.
Seven awards were given to staff members and to one member of the public who performed exceptionally. The honorees: Community Service Award (for fundraising for the police dog memorial): Seth Morrissey, Tom O’Donnell, Scott Webster, Jody King, Adrian Mendez and Todd Thompson
The portal was created as part of a countywide effort to increase accountability to residents. It includes information on community connections, elections, Town financials, land use, lobbying, open records and public meetings. It helps further the Town values of clear, direct and honest communication; responsible care for our resources; and exceptional public service. In addition to improving transparency, all of these efforts also aim to improve CRgov.com visitors’ experiences. Comments regarding these new features – or any other aspect of the town website – can be directed to communityrelations@CRgov.com or 303-660-1380. Plan Demonstrates Residential and Commercial uses for Central Castle Rock Land Large landowners in central Castle Rock will present a preliminary plan, for how their land could ultimately be developed, to Town Council and the Town Planning Commission. The 950 acres included in the plan are east and west of Interstate 25, stretching from Colorado Highway 86 on the east to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks west of Liggett Road on the west. The area is bounded by The Woodlands/Escavera on the south and by Metzler Ranch on the north. If the development comes to fruition, it will be the largest new development in Castle Rock since 2007. The plan will be presented at a joint Town Council and Planning Commission meeting on July 12, which begins at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at Town Hall, 100 N. Wilcox St. The public is invited to attend and make comments. The full sketch plan, along with a fact sheet and other information about the proposal, can be found at CRgov.com/ sketchplan. Questions? Contact Town Development Project Manager Jason Reynolds, 720-733-3537 or jreynolds@CRgov.com.

Creating Leaders
LEADERSHIP DOUGLAS COUNTY
June’s Topic: Arts, Culture and Media The Cherokee Ranch and Castle was the perfect venue for the Arts, Culture and Media session of Leadership Douglas County. With new cultural centers opening throughout the County and other programs in each community expanding, we see arts and culture as not only an enhancement to our quality of life, but also as an economic engine for Douglas County. The cultural opportunities that are blossoming in Douglas County contribute to making us the hotbed of cultural activity in Colorado. The session wrapped up with Natalie Tysdal, KWGN-TV Anchor and Chris Michelwicz of Community Media of Colorado, formerly Colorado Community Newspapers, discussing the quickly changing media environment and how one gets the attention of the news media. Steering Committee Planners were Debi Haning and Kristin Hayek.
LDC’s Class of 2011 Graduation On June 1st, the 2011 Leadership Douglas County Class celebrated completion of the 10-month program with their graduation held at the Cherokee Ranch and Castle. More than 100 attendees were welcomed by Suzette Rodriguez and Kevin Duffy, the 2011 Leadership Co-Chairs and Pam Ridler, President and CEO for the Castle Rock Chamber. The Keynote Speaker was Reverend Leon Kelly, Executive Director of Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives, who has an impressive leadership history. Rev. Kelly’s call to action has led him to be widely recognized throughout the region and honored by many who work in the field of non-profits, law enforcement, sports, media, education, and government agencies. He is a role model for future leaders, inspiring them by example. Leadership Douglas County is designed to broaden participant knowledge of the community while enhancing leadership skills, which in turn increases the strength and effectiveness of our new community leaders. For more information on the Leadership Douglas County program, please call Melissa Moroni at (303) 688-4597 or email Melissa@castlerock.org.

Colorado Ranked #5 in America’s Top States for Business
#5
A recent CNBC Special Report, America’s Top States for Business 2011, scored all 50 states on 43 measures of competitiveness, developed with input from business groups including the National Association of Manufacturers and Council on Competitiveness. States received points based on their rankings in each metric. Those metrics were separated into ten broad categories, weighting the categories based on how frequently they are cited in state economic development marketing materials. This way, the study ranks the states based on criteria they use to sell themselves. Here are the ten categories ranked in the study: Cost of Business
Technology & Innovation
Workforce
Education
Quality of Life
Business Friendliness
Economy Infrastructure & Transportation
Access to Capital Cost of Living
As a result, the state of Colorado accumulated a ranking of #5, behind Virginia, Texas, North Carolina and Georgia. For a comparison of all 50 states, go to http://www.cnbc.com/id/41666606. Overall Rank
