Chamber brings culture to Castle Rock
P am Ridler, CCE Castle Rock Chamber P resident & CEO
Well we are finally in full swing for the summer. Half the year is over and the Chamber is moving into our most visible months with our community events. Our cultural events are in the “home stretch” for planning the upcoming 10th Annual Castle Rock WineFest scheduled for July 20th and the 24th Annual Colorado Artfest at Castle Rock, September 7 & 8th. That said, we have also created a new image that touts Castle Rock and our area neighbor’s cultural scene. You’ve got to check it out www.CastleRockCulture.com. Thanks to our friends at Webolutions.
Just remember the third week in July is the time to gather up your friends and partake in the signature cuisines during the two Winemaker Dinners hosted at Gabriel’s and Augustine Grill. Then complete your week on Saturday, July 20th with the enjoyment of live musical entertainment, food, lifestyle demonstrations, and of course the over 200 varieties of Colorado wines for you to savor.

Come hear about the Chamber’s successful high impact business development program which has the purpose of helping our local businesses flourish in today’s market. The 4th Business Boot Camp, a seventh month program which is designed to provide professional assistance to business owners by analyzing their business and grow to the next level will begin in October, but you can come and hear more at the free no obligation Boot Camp Social on Tuesday, July 23rd at 5:30 pm. Key elements of next level growth can be measured in many ways: increased revenues and profits; added staff and workforce; acquisition of investment capital and community impact. Ultimately, these growth patterns depend on helping individual leaders strengthen their ability to impact their business.

Douglas County law enforcement joins school district to announce safety plan—“School safety is our No. 1 priority. Students can’t learn if they are not safe,” said Douglas County School District Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Fagen at a news conference May 30 in Castle Rock. “Keeping Douglas County schools safe is a community effort. I am very proud of the DCSD community and value the partnership the district has with law enforcement.” Douglas County Sheriff Dave Weaver, Castle Rock Police Chief Jack Cauley, Parker Police Chief David King, and Lone Tree Police Department Commander Ron Pinson joined Fagen to announce a school safety update. “This partnership is a win-win situation for everyone. Our combined efforts will enhance security within our schools and will increase interaction with staff and students. We will continue to work together to make our schools in each of our communities a safe place to learn,” said Chief Cauley. Read more at http:// www.townofcastlerock.com/CivicAlerts.aspx? AID=622
It’s important to mitigate the threat of wildfires, which is why Town Manager Mark Stevens and Fire Chief Art Morales – acting on authority granted by Town Council – took these measures.
New ban prohibits disposal of electronics in household trash—Effective July 1, a new ban on the disposal of electronics – also known as E-waste – will require Colorado consumers to recycle electronics such as television sets, laptops, tablets, DVD players and video game consoles rather than dispose of the articles as household waste. View which recyclers are nearby by entering a ZIP code at greenergadgets.org. Some large retail chains, such as Best Buy and Staples, offer this service for free. Local companies may charge depending on the item. For additional information on electronics and computer waste please visit http:// www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite/CDPHE-HM/CBON/1251615964355 Survey shows community members pleased with life in Castle RockCastle Rock continues to be a great place to live, as demonstrated by the more than 1,300 responses received to the Town’s 2013 community survey. Survey respondents indicated that the Town government is doing a solid job, and that they favor maintaining Castle Rock’s small-town character as the community grows. The existence of special events is one aspect particularly important to keeping Castle Rock’s hometown feel, respondents to the statistically valid survey said. Residents and Town business license holders gave most Town services, amenities and quality of life items high marks; virtually all were ranked near or above good, on a scale where 3 was “average,” 4 was “good,” and 5 was “excellent.” Read more at http://www.castlerock.org/chamber_news2.htm Town honors former Mayor Ray Waterman - Whether it was his positive impact on students in the classroom, his leadership on tough issues, or his consistently positive answer when asked how he was – “darn near perfect” – those who knew former Mayor Ray Waterman have many memories to share. The Town is formally memorializing Waterman, who passed away in January, in a couple of ways. Earlier this year, community members made generous contributions so the Town could plant trees along Sellars Gulch, where Ray and his wife, Linda, walked nearly every day when they lived in Castle Rock. Those trees were planted in May. Read more at http://www.castlerock.org/chamber_news1.htm 18

Creating Community Leaders-Leadership Douglas County Junes Topic: Arts, Culture & Media & Graduation Steering Committee Planners : Kristen Knoll, Brooke Hengs t, Jamie Noebel, Class of 2012 The class began the day at the state-of-the-art Lone Tree Arts Center (LTAC), located near Lincoln Avenue and I-25. Upon its grand opening, the LTAC quickly jumped into a full schedule of programming that keeps the Center busy from morning until night with arts education for children, performances, and a meeting and event rental site for corporate, civic, private and community arts groups. Access to arts and culture is viewed as an essential element in building successful communities and it provides economic benefits to the community, as well. The class heard from a panel of arts leaders from across the County and learned about funding mechanisms, the wide variety of events, activities and organizations that are available, as well as the vast number of residents, and non-residents, who choose to participate in cultural programs offered within Douglas County. Deborah Sherman (Douglas County) and Chuck Plunkett (Denver Post) led the class through a session on “Today’s Changing Media,” where they demonstrated how the speed and quality with which the news is delivered, is often impacted by technology and audience input and interaction. Dr. Michelle Post rapidly delivered a social media primer that left everyone’s head spinning!
Leadership Douglas County Class of 2013 Graduates 16 Following the morning session, on June 5, the Cherokee Ranch and Castle, in Sedalia, was the venue for lunch, Castle tours and graduation. The Leadership Douglas County Class of 2013 celebrated the completion of their 10-month program while more than 100 attendees were welcomed by W.B. “Dub” Jones and Brandy Zink, 2013 LDC Co-Chairs, and Pam Ridler, for the Castle Rock Chamber. The class was honored to have Lt. General Jay Kelley, USAF (Retired), as the speaker, who gave an inspiring talk to the graduates. Every year, each class completes a service project as part of the program. In selecting a project, the Class of 2013 was moved by the high rate of reported suicides in Douglas County. The class met with the Youth Education and Safety in Schools (Y.E.S.S.) Program Director at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and found that there was a need for funding for education and awareness for suicide prevention. They also discovered that there was only funding for three more classes and the classes were already full, with a wait list! These classes provide the necessary volunteers for the National Suicide Prevention hotline and other similar programs. The class decided that their goal would be to raise at least $15,000 for a year of classes, and to expand and maintain the volunteer base in our community. Through hard work and generous donors, the class was exceed their goal and raised over $25,000 for the program! Congratulations to the graduating class of 2013:
