CEO Focus Trade Mission to Greece
2011~2012
We are currently on our international trip visiting the sunny Mediterranean. Thirty--two travelers from the Castle Rock area enjoyed a surprise tour of Thirty London and then continued to Athens, Greece and experienced the Acropolis and world famous Parthenon-Parthenon--what --what a magnificent temple! We are now on a sevenseven-day cruise on the Aegean Sea enjoying the sights and splendor of such wonderful portsports-ofof-call as Mykonos, Greece; the island of Crete and Istanbul, Turkey. Below are photographs from our first “leg” as we departed DIA, visited Buckingham Palace in London and toured Athens. The Chamber board is currently considering a 2012 trip destination with Pam Ridler, CCE details to be announced in December. Plan to join us next year for another President/CEO Castle Rock Chamber exotic excursion while making new friends and memories to last a lifetime! We are on our way! Good-bye Denver, hello Europe.

to the staff of Cherokee Ranch and Castle and Flying Horse Catering for the excellent Business After Hours in October !
It was like having breakfast at home as Chamber members networked throughout the beautiful show rooms at their Castle Rock location at 1375 Caprice.
The ambiance of the “Castle” was a perfect setting for the 150 Chamber members who attended to cultivate business relationships. The food was scrumptious as Jim DeLay and staff from Flying Horse Catering offered business owners a peek at their holiday menu. Celebrate Giving at the Turkey Rock Trot Thanksgiving Day
Arapahoe Community College Castle Rock Campus to host Community Open House Nov. 10
Celebrate Giving, and Start your Thanksgiving Day on the right foot or the left foot, running or walking to give to those less fortunate in our community. The 7th Annual Turkey Rock Trot will be at the Douglas County Event Center.

This year’s professionally CHIP- timed event begins with regis-tration at 8:30 AM. Runners will lead off at 9:30 am with walkers to follow. Online Registration for participants 13 years old and up $30.00/ Race Day Registration $35.00. Children 12 and under are free. All proceeds benefit the Douglas Elbert Task Force. Bring canned and non-perishable food items for a free "goodie" bag! So whether you are a serious runner or just a leisurely walker, bring your family and friends, and join the fun. Register online at rocktrot.com Thanks4giving! Front Range Theatre Company Presents a Special Production about Men in Uniform "The Wisdom Within These Walls: Wisdom in Uniform" is a special production, not only to me (I have family members in the armed forces overseas), but to the entire community. The producers, Anne McGhee Stinson and Sandy HaworthSouth, interviewed local veterans from WWII to those who are serving in the wars overseas. Their poignant, moving and inspirational stories will be compiled and shared onstage in a reader's theatre format against a 7x10 foot shadow box. After the production, the cast, crew and veterans will participate in a question and answer session with the audience. This production is amazing and unique -- and these veterans are truly our heroes! We honor them by telling their stories and the sacrifices they have made for the citizens of this country. All shows will be at the Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts. And we are attempting to “take the show on the road" to present it at local schools and libraries where students can meet these veterans and learn more about their heroism. Veterans Day Ceremonies at the Veterans Plaza Veterans Day is Friday, November 11th and a special event is being planned at the newly constructed Veterans Plaza on Fourth & Wilcox from 10:30 until noon. Ceremonies include a ribbon cutting with both the Castle Rock and Castle Pines Chambers of Commerce following the raising the of service flags in the plaza. The United States Air Force Band and Color-Guard will be joining guest speaker Brigadier General David Warner, USAF (retired) with lunch and refreshments following the ceremony. See the flyer on page 16.
Festivities at the community open house will include refreshments, tours of the campus throughout the evening, as well as representatives from Pre-Enrollment Services and Financial Aid and the ACC Faculty, who will be on hand to answer questions and help prospective students prepare for the spring semester. Applications for the 2012 spring semester at ACC are currently being accepted and registration for courses begins on Monday, Nov. 21. The online schedule will be posted at arapahoe.edu in early November. Classes for the upcoming semester will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012. The Castle Rock Campus offers courses in five categories: associate of arts and associate of science transfer programs, career and technical education, workforce training, concurrent enrollment for high school students, and community education. The Castle Rock Campus also offers guaranteed transfer courses. For more information about the Castle Rock Campus, please contact Jill Garber (Director) or Peggy Quinn (Campus Coordinator) at castle.rock@arapahoe.edu or 303.660.3160. Media inquiries regarding Arapahoe Community College should be directed to Jeff Duggan, Communications Coordinator, at jeff.duggan@arapahoe.edu or 303.797.5709 or arapahoe.edu Community Recycling dropdrop-off site available Dec. 3 The Castle Rock Community Green Team, in partnership with the Douglas County School District, will launch a community recycling drop-off site on Sat. Dec. 3rd. The site, located at 701 Prairie Hawk Drive will be open to the public on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The site launch will allow residents of Douglas County, who currently do not have access to curbside recycling, to drop off newspapers, cardboard, glass, plastic and tin or aluminum items (items normally accepted by Waste Management, who will be providing the service.) Volunteers from the Green Team and the Douglas County Senior’s Council will man the site to ensure that inappropriate items are not dumped on the site. (Dumping of non-permitted items could jeopardize the site’s continued operation.) This will be provided for free to all Douglas County residents and business owners.

TOWN & COUNTY In the News
Castle Rock Police Officer, Renda Albergotti, named Female Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Renda Albergotti is the second Castle Rock Police Officer to receive the award – two years ago, CRPD Officer Tammy Black was recognized. The award is given out annually by Rocky Mountain Women in Law Enforcement to one female officer working within the Front Range. “Officer Albergotti provides outstanding service for the department,” said Acting Police Chief John Anderson. “She’s a dedicated officer and well respected by her peers. Our community should be proud…to have officers like ours recognized almost back-to-back by a statewide organization.” Albergotti was selected among many nominees for the annual award based on her extraordinary example and her work performance, including ‘Exceptional Valor’ and ‘Exceptional Achievement’. She has served with the Castle Rock Police Department for the past three years. Prior to that, she was with the Denver Police Department. Albergotti was instrumental in a recent marijuana bust, the largest of its kind in Castle Rock. She also single-handedly captured a suspect after a theft had just occurred and before backup arrived. Neighborhood Crime Data Now Accessible through Website The Castle Rock Police Department just made it possible for residents to track crimes in their own neighborhoods. Residents can also access the free iPhone app in the Apple iTunes Store or sign up for customized email alerts to monitor neighborhood incidents as soon as they’re reported. To access the information, go to CRgov.com/crimereports. The page defaults to 100 Perry Street, which is Castle Rock Police Department headquarters. Once at the site, type your address into the search bar and, within seconds, neighborhood crime data is loaded. Click on the various icons on the map to see the crimes that have occurred, or the sex offenders living in your neighborhood. Residents will find a specific address and, in the case of sex offenders, a photo. Reconstruction of Burgess Pool - 40 more years of family fun For 44 years, members of the Castle Rock community have gone to Burgess Pool for birthday parties, family reunions, graduation parties and simple days in the sun. By next season, the pool will look completely different, and it will be poised for another 30 to 40 years of community enjoyment. Town Council approved a contract not to exceed $1.67 million with MW Golden Constructors for reconstruction and expansion of Burgess Pool at 22 N. Gilbert Street.
A new, 3,998-square-foot pool with zero-depth entry, sprayers, a toddler slide, a current channel and underwater seating will be constructed, and a 20-foot slide will replace the current 12-foot slide, taking the pool’s capacity from 173 to 300. A 20-foot Funbrella, a shade sail, and 10 tables with umbrellas will create more shade on the new pool deck – something residents requested in the planning stages for this project. The current bathhouse will be reconstructed to include a new entry way, men’s, women’s and family locker rooms and a multipurpose/birthday party room. The multipurpose room is being added to extend facility use and to increase the revenue that the facility will bring. The room will be available for rental to organizations such as scouts, HOAs, and recreation activities. Burgess Pool is named for late Castle Rock resident Charles Burgess, who donated $30,000 of his estate toward its construction. The last renovation to the pool was in 1994. Learn more about Town pools at CRgov.com/aquatics. Plum Creek Water Purification Facility Construction Set to Begin Town Council recently awarded a construction contract to Moltz Construction, Inc., Salida, Colo., who will begin construction of the Plum Creek Water Purification Facility in November. When this facility begins operation in 2013, the Town will transition from a mostly nonrenewable water supply to 35 to 40 percent renewable water. The Plum Creek Water Purification Facility will enable the Town to collect and treat water, which will provide a renewable and sustainable supply for the Town. Renewable water sources include water rights on East and West Plum Creek; reclaimable water discharged to East Plum Creek; lawn irrigation return flows; and future imported surface water. The water purification facility will have an initial treatment capacity of four million gallons per day and will be expandable to 12 million gallons per day in the future. The average Castle Rock household uses an average of 400 gallons per day, which means this facility will produce enough water to supply 10,000 homes per day. The Water Department budgeted $22.6 million for the entire project, including wells and pipelines. This facility comprises just one component of the Town’s Legacy Water Projects – the goal of which is to transition the Town to 75 percent renewable water by the time it is built out. All of the Town’s water currently comes from nonrenewable wells. Construction of the Plum Creek Water Purification Facility is planned to be complete by March 2013. For more information, go to CRgov.com/pure.
Construction will be completed in time for the 2012 swim season. Castle Rock Chamber Business Voice

AAMBASSADOR OF THE MONTH MBASSADORS
Ginny Wainright SendOutCards Ginny Wainright moved to Douglas County in 1993, moved away twice to live in Arkansas and Arizona, and then decided that “snow was better than those inferno summers”!! Ginny has always enjoyed smaller towns and when she found Castle Rock, she knew she had found a home. She says there is a sense of pride, ownership and connection in Castle Rock that you don’t feel living in the suburbs. Ginny says Castle Rock has all the advantages of a smaller community and yet there is easy access to the “big city. It’s the best of both worlds.” Ginny is an independent distributor for SendOutCards. Sending cards is a lost art…only 1% of business people send thank you cards! She shows business owners how they can use greeting cards to express appreciation to their clients and customers and, because of her reminder system, they will never forget a birthday again! It’s like a virtual greeting card store where you can choose one of 12,000 cards, write a message in your own handwriting, sign it, attach a gift if you choose. SendOutCards even prints, stuffs, stamps and mails your card for you. Ginny joined the Castle Rock Chamber several years ago when she owned a resumé and word processing business. Because of her positive experience with the Chamber at that time, there was no question about joining the Chamber again when she became affiliated with SendOutCards. Four months after becoming a member, Ginny became an Ambassador. When Ginny was a new chamber member, she participated in a lot of activities and was on a couple of committees. With her new business, she decided she not only wanted to participate but wanted to promote what has been so good to her and her business. Ginny feels the Chamber has so much to offer businesses of all sizes and that so few people take advantage of the different programs and activities. She sees the Ambassadors as the mentors who promote participation. Castle Rock Chamber Business Voice

Creating Leaders
Leadership Douglas County
October Class Topic: History and Open Space Steering Committee Planners: Kelly First and Vicky Starkey, Leadership Douglas County Class of 2011. On October 7th, the class met in Louviers to learn about the history of Douglas County and also the abundance of open space in the county. We think of history as being in the past, yet we are all in the process of making history; both our own history and that of our communities. Great communities don’t happen by chance, overnight, or by themselves, we create them by guiding change. The Leadership Class toured Douglas County in search of some of the 46,000 acres of open space. Of the 46,000 acres, approximately 13,000 acres are owned by the County with over 50 miles of trails accessible to the public. The sizes of the parcels of land protected by the open space program include the largest, Greenland Ranch (17,000 acres). Douglas County seeks to protect open space by accomplishing a variety of conservation objectives, including the preservation of important wildlife habitat and movement corridors; perpetuation of the County’s rural landscape and agricultural heritage; creation of community buffers; protection of scenic views, historic properties, and archeological resources; and enhancement of recreational and educational opportunities. Douglas County would be happy to accommodate organized groups who would like an interpretive hike on open space property or see a Power Point presentation regarding open space. For more information, please call Jackie Sanderson at 303-660-7495. “Twenty-five years ago, my family was part of the tremendous influx of people coming into Douglas County. Today’s program gave me a much better understanding of the County’s heritage. In addition, the tremendous success of the county’s efforts to secure property for open space in perpetuity is a comfort to me, as one of the many people that have been part of the growth that has changed the face of the county”. Leslie Good, Leadership Douglas County Class of 2012.

Thanks to the Douglas County Parks department, the Plaza for the Douglas County Veterans Monument will be finished by Veterans Day 2011 and, will be ready to receive the 14’ bronze statue by Veterans Day 2012. Though we are making great headway in fund raising by reaching over $35,000 toward our goal of $120,000, the Douglas County Veterans Monument Foundation (DCVMF) needs the help of our citizens to bring to reality this tribute for those military men and women who have passed, veterans living, and those currently serving our country. Monetary gifts for specific items for the monument, e.g., flag poles, flags, branch of service seals, etc. are possible as well and, all gifts are tax deductible as the DCVMF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Bringing Clarity to the Cloud: Five Tips to Ensure Business Continuity and Securely Store Data By Scott Weber, Vice President, Cbeyond’s Denver Office Cloud computing has been touted as the “next big thing” in the tech sector. By delivering IT functionality at a lower cost with greater agility, cloud computing has enabled small businesses to save substantially on data storage. According to Global Industry Analysts, cloud computing is projected to be a more than $200 billion market opportunity by 2015. However, recent high-profile cloud outages have heightened security concerns in the minds of small business owners about the safety of cloud computing over traditional on-premise servers. Generally, cloud servers are a safer option. The most reliable cloud computing providers have redundant systems in place to backup data to alternate locations and enable you to recover it quickly. Nevertheless, how can you—as a small business owner—ensure business continuity in the cloud?
1
Tip : Safely and Affordably Store Your Data on Cloud Servers As I’ve seen “from the trenches” working with thousands of small businesses, cloud computing services offer small businesses greater IT reliability and security than on-premise solutions. In fact, according to a recent IDC report, businesses operating in the cloud achieve 97 percent greater IT reliability. Cloud servers can securely host your mission-critical business information, including websites, accounting software, customer databases, sales force automation and point of sale—while giving you the peace of mind. Not only is data more secure in a fullymanaged data center, it also provides strong ROI. Typically, a cloud solution lowers the total cost of ownership by more than 50 percent and provides predictable monthly expenses while reducing initial investment, hardware replacement costs and maintenance expenses.
2
Tip On--Site Disasters : Ask Vendors to Ensure Business Continuity in the Event of On Most small businesses do not have a holistic network security plan. The cloud can support a no-single-point-of-failure strategy by providing both increased network and physical security. Cloud services provide an enterprise firewall to protect against multiple threats, including at the application layer, and private firewalls that can be customized to the level of protection needed. Other benefits include proactive installation of the latest anti-virus software, in-line intrusion protection systems and security patches. The most sophisticated data centers have staff on-site 24x7x365, biometric identity verification, zoned access, round-the-clock monitoring and redundancies in cooling, power and fire suppression.
