Seven Reasons EVERY Business and NonNon-profit Organization Should Be A Member of Their Local Chamber of Commerce In A Challenging Economy.

2011~2012 BOARD OF DIRECTORS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

In a world loaded with marketing options and information overload I’m often asked by new and existing business owners for a simple, inexpensive way to increase their local visibility and marketing efforts to produce more opportunities and sales. Without a doubt, I always ask a stunningly simple question, Are you a member of your local chamber of commerce? I get one of three Tony Rubleski, owner answers: Mind Capture Group 1. Yes 2. No, but tell me more 3. We used to be a member

Linda Watson Sky Ridge Medical Center

CHAIR-ELECT Aaron Barrick Folkestad, Fazekas, Barrick & Patoile, P.C.

TREASURER-ELECT Wendy Nelson B2B CFO

IMMEDIATE PAST CHAIRMAN

Now I know every person has opinions but I’d like you to take a moment to read this brief article to discover seven reasons why I strongly feel that every business and non-profit organization should be a member of their local chamber regardless of the size of their organization, marketing budget, years in business, or even if they’ve heard or possibly had a negative chamber experience in the past. In light of the current challenges in the economy, this article is even more relevant than when I first wrote it two-years ago. 1. Visibility. Yes, you’ve heard it said time and time again, that out of sight means out of mind. This is not a smart strategy for any business, especially when times are good. A market can change quickly. As Jim Collins says, good is the enemy of great. This is a great statement, but I’d like to add to it as it relates to marketing. While good is the enemy of great, complacency and short term thinking is the enemy of sustained marketing breakthroughs. Let’s look at a real world example of chamber complacency in action. Having worked with hundreds of chambers throughout North America, I’m simply baffled that within many communities how few real estate agents and automotive sales reps are either non-existent or barely active within their local chamber. In these two highly competitive and crowded markets you’d think these folks would do anything to stand out from the competition and fully leverage the chamber to get an edge. Nope. It’s as if they have no idea the local chamber exists and how it can benefit their business. 2. Access. Unless you’re crazy or like consistent rejection, no one enjoys making cold calls all day long. It’s a painful, tedious process that often wastes far too much time and mentally drains even the most upbeat and friendly person after a while. When you join a chamber and actively get involved you’ll discover that meeting prospects who may have an interest or who can refer you to key contacts you’re trying to reach, is a huge benefit of membership. From being on committees, serving as an ambassador, or attending specific events where prospects are likely to be, you’ll find yourself in situations where you can identify and meet decision makers face-to-face versus making cold calls. 3. Ongoing training and education. Unless you have the luxury of a training budget or can afford to bring in local, regional or nationally known experts on different topics,

I firmly believe that there’s no other organization in America that delivers timely programs at such an affordable price as the local or regional chamber of commerce. By spreading costs among fellow members through registration fees and sponsorships, members can stay updated, informed and educated at a bargain price. 4. Networking. From seminars, leads groups, luncheons to business expos and various business and community committees, there’s absolutely no excuse for not being able to meet new contacts, referrals and people who can help you with ideas and additional ways to grow your business. The old adage, out of sight, out of mind, is so true when it relates to networking. The chamber gives you several different venues to meet new people. My entire career I’ve utilized the power of networking in my home chamber’s ranging from serving as co-chair of the ambassador league to sponsoring and speaking at different events. The positive outcomes to my bottom line and great people I’ve met have been great. In addition, doing business with fellow members who offer wonderful products, services, and ideas has also been a big plus. (Continues on page 11) Castle Rock Chamber Business Voice

Mike Tafoya Business Strategist and CEO Coach

Halfway through the seven week Business Boot Camp, the participants picked up in January where they left off in December—focusing on financial reporting. Financial statements and other data can do more than provide a scorecard on how the business is doing; they can identify problem areas that need to be addressed. This is especially true of the Cash Flow Statement and the Key Performance Indicators presented by Instructor Mike Tafoya of Estrada Strategies. These are complex issues, but a business owner who does not pay attention to key financial reports is operating in the dark and may not realize the true condition of the company until it’s too late. Lots of “lights went on” for the class members in the course of these two sessions. We know their companies will benefit from the new financial expertise of these business owners. The January session continued on this track and covered the Cash Flow Statement and various financial performance ratios. This is a series of Business Boot Camp training highlights by Brian Leugs, President of Business Communications Support, Boot Camp Mentor and Castle Rock Chamber Member. Keep abreast of training information being imparted each month by Boot Camp instructor, Mike Tafoya, of Estrada Strategies-DTC. This is a Castle Rock Chamber-sponsored program for local businesses. AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR THANK YOU AMBASSADORS Ambassador of the Month The Ambassador Program is sponsored this month by:

Ginny Wainright, Send Out Cards https://www.sendoutcards.com/SOCGinny/ With the close of 2011, we had several Ambassadors which were running neck-in-neck for the coveted Ambassador of the Year! However, we have one Ambassador that you saw win Ambassador of the Month several times throughout the year. Our Ginny Wainright is our Ambassador of the Year for the second year in a row! Now, you must remember, the points required by the end of the year is 6,000. Ginny earned a total of 11,925 just short of double the necessary amount. That speaks to the level of work, support and involvement! A huge congratulations to Ginny!!! Thank you so very much! I would be remiss not to let you know the top performers as well who were right "up there" with Ginny! Ambassador of the Year Ginny Wainright - Send Out Cards 1st Runner Up Heather Browning - Colonial Benefit Group 2nd Runner Up Teri Ellis - Allstate- Ellis Insurance Agency 3rd Runner Up Sue Turner - Proforma Image Branding

11,925 points 10,900 points 10,365 points 10,050 points

We have a wonderful group of business individuals whose work and dedication as Ambassadors sets this Chamber apart from any other. Thank you ladies!

Sue Turner Proforma Image Branding http://www.proforma.com/ Sue Turner is a Denver native, and has lived in Castle Rock for sixteen years with her husband Brett, and son, Steve, all of whom work in their own business, Proforma Image Branding. She moved to Castle Rock when Littleton started getting “too big.” She and her family love the small town feel, and the sense of community that is typical of smaller communities. Even though Castle Rock has grown a lot in the time she’s been here, Sue feels it has maintained the home town feel, and frequently talks about how “they roll up the sidewalks at night.” Sue is in her second year as an Ambassador. She has been a strong advocate for the Chamber since she joined more than four years ago. She enjoys being an Ambassador for the camaraderie that it brings, as well as the opportunity to mentor new and potential members. Being an Ambassador provides the opportunity to take an active role in the community and make a difference. The role of Chamber Ambassador also defines you as a person who is interested in building business relationships, encouraging new business leaders to become more involved and generally making this community a great place to work and live. It is the same reason Sue enjoys being a member of the chamber - for the relationships she has developed, and many strong friendships as well. Having clients become friends is what being in business is all about! Congratulations Sue!

(Continue from page 3 article)

Seven Reasons EVERY Business and NonNon-profit Organization Should Be A Member of Their Local Chamber of Commerce In A Challenging Economy. 5. Low cost advertising opportunities. As far as visibility at the local level, a chamber offers a wide range of affordable advertising options and sponsorship packages for just about every business or non-profit, regardless of how big or small their budget may be. I’ve bought and sold traditional media and I can tell you it’s not cheap. For the price of a few ads within a major media outlet, you can often sponsor an entire program with the chamber, give a short commercial about your company, meet new prospects and follow up with the list of attendees who may have a need for your offering. This is a wonderful way to hold your marketing dollars accountable and see them working hard right before your eyes.

A common area to get low cost or free advertising is submitting updates or news briefs for possible inclusion within the chamber “Member News’ section of the newsletter or eletter. Amazingly, a lot of members do not take advantage of this wonderful free marketing opportunity provided with their membership. The chamber is always on the lookout for member related news. I make it a goal to get over a small news update or announcement at least every two to three months to my local chambers because I know many times it will get printed and read by key people in the business community. 6. Advocacy. A foolish belief among large companies, especially national retail outlets, is that they’re too big or not local enough to care about getting involved or joining their local chamber of commerce. A few things they should think about: Are their employees and customers local? Are taxes and school systems important to finding and retaining a high quality work force? These are key areas that the chamber researches, lobbies and routinely discusses with local and regional government units, politicians and the media to keep people up to date on central issues of importance pertaining to their membership and the community. What happens to your local employees and customers does have an impact on your business even if you’re a national chain. In addition, missing out on networking, sponsorship and other business building news and benefits, I think it looks incredibly tacky if four or five local businesses are active in the chamber and a national firm in the same market area won’t even join. In my mind this sends an incongruent message to the market when the national company claims to be ‘a good corporate citizen’ but they won’t join and get involved with their local chamber of commerce. 7. Money saving discounts. If you fully leverage the cost saving discounts ranging from health insurance, office supplies, to discounted phone service to other items your business currently uses or will need, it’s not uncommon for a small business to easily find enough savings in the first 30-60 days upon joining with endorsed providers or member to member discounts to recoup most, if not all of their membership dues. Being a small business owner, I can attest to the fact that being a member of the chamber and shopping around for discounts and services available makes joining achievable for any company regardless of how limited their marketing budget may be. Well, there you have it! Seven great reasons to join or get more involved and fully leverage the benefits that your home town or regional chamber of commerce can provide your business or organization. ©2011 by Tony Rubleski. Essential criteria for consideration is the length of time a business has supported the Chamber through its membership – ten consecutive years or longer - as well as participation and sponsorship. Steele Tires has been a member of the Chamber for an impressive 35 years and 1 month! Steele Tires was started as a one bay business in 1970 by William (Bill) Steele and was located at 104 Wilcox St. It operated as Cash Bros. Tires until 1974. In 1979, property was acquired at 2 Phelps Drive, a 5500 square foot 6 bay plus office building was then built and Steele Tires relocated to this location. In 1983, 3,000 square feet was added to the building. Steele Tires is a full service car care center and a member of American Car Care Centers. Steele Tires is very proud of our quality work and home town customers’ friendliness. We have been in business 42 years. Bill Steele is owner and a retired Navy Captain. January’s Topic: Government Speakers: Christopher Gates, ED, Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement Jerry Stigall- Douglas County Government Local Mayors Panel: Mayor Gunning (Lone Tree), Mayor Donahue (Castle Rock), Mayor Huff (Castle Pines), Mayor Casiano (Parker), Mayor West (Larkspur) and Jerry Flannery (Highlands Ranch Community Association) Social Services Panel: Panel Laurie Elliott (Arapahoe/Douglas Mental Health), Suzanne Greene (Douglas County Homeless Coalition and Douglas Elbert Task Force), Vikki O'Neil (Douglas County Human Services), Carla Turner (Douglas County Youth Initiative) and Jennifer Walker (Women’s Crisis & Family Outreach Center). January’s topic for the Leadership Douglas County class was Government and Social Services. The day began at Sky Ridge Medical Center where the Douglas County Business Alliance hosted a Legislative breakfast with our Douglas County delegation. The day began with a behind the scene overview of the work that occurs at the Capitol, the upcoming issues, and the importance of building relationships between the legislators, stakeholders and the administration. The class then spent the rest of the day at the Lone Tree Civic Center, enjoying the facility of one of our patron sponsors- the City of Lone Tree. Chris Gates gave a fascinating and informative presentation on the history of democracy in America and the evolving role of local government. Beginning with a historical and theoretical perspective, Chris moved into what makes American democracy unique and special. He ended his presentation with the idea that we are in a moment of reinvention. We are defining how to be citizens in a democracy in a different way. Reinventing the way we listen, how we lead (which begins at the local level) and how we live. I think Chris summed it up well when he said we need to keep having conversations and asking the questions – are we doing the right thing? and how do we get more involved ? at all levels, locally neighborhood and community, as well as at state and federal levels! Our Mayor’s Roundtable was a great way for the class participants to interact one-on-one with each of the Mayors from the Douglas County communities.

On the social services side, the Women’s Crisis and Family Outreach Center, the Douglas/Elbert Task Force, Arapahoe/Douglas Mental Health Network and the Douglas County Department of Human Services provided an overview of their agencies, spoke about their clients and discussed funding streams and how they have been affected by the economy. Although Douglas County is affluent, these organizations see the need in our community. “Having the opportunity to talk candidly and at times off the record with our elected officials was particularly valuable. Regular people who go the extra mile and put themselves into a position where they want to influence and better their community inspires me to do more myself. And, LDC gives us the information and the tools to put that desire into action” Kerry Schalders, Dex One Corporation. Steering Committee Planners: Carly Daelli, Michelle Holbrook and Brandy Zink class of 2011 Leadership Douglas County would like to acknowledge their Patron Sponsors: The City of Lone Tree and Douglas County Government and also their Program Sponsors: Black Hills Energy, BreakThroughs, Inc., Cherokee Ranch and Castle Foundation, Douglas County Libraries, FirstBank of Douglas County, Highlands Ranch Metro District, South Metro Fire and Rescue Authority, Town of Castle Rock, Wells Fargo Bank, and the Chambers of Commerce of Castle Rock, Castle Pines, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and Parker. DOUGLAS COUNTY: COUNTY The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is honored to have numerous men and women who have proudly and honorably served, or are serving in the United States Military. We are dedicated to helping those that serve our community and country. DCSO and its employees is a proud supporter of a Non-profit organization called Homes for Our Troops (HFOT). HFOT builds adaptive homes for severely disabled Veterans at no cost to the service men or women. They are in the process of building a special needs home for a Hero in our community. The organization is building this home in Parker, Colorado for Cpl. Nick Orchowski and his family (wife and two young children). The adaptive homes are built for a disabled Veterans specific needs costing on average about $325,000. US Bank and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office have set up a donation account for the Orchowski home build. To donate just call or visit any US Bank location and ask to deposit funds into ‘Cpl. Nick Orchowski Home Build Project’ account. All money placed into this account will be given to Homes for Our Troops to build Nick Orchowski’s home. Many Veterans selflessly put their lives on the line daily to fight for our freedom and Cpl. Nick Orchowski is no different, except during his initial deployment insurgent forces attacked his vehicle throwing Nick from his gunner’s hatch leaving him a quadriplegic. However, during one of the several follow-up surgeries he miraculously regained some use of his extremities. As with many Veteran’s he has returned home to uncertainty due to his disability, but we can ‘pay it forward for our freedom’ to Nick by providing some normalcy to his life, by giving him an adaptive home so he can be more independent. This will not only help Nick, but his entire family’s lives as well. Please call or visit your local US Bank and donate to ‘Cpl. Nick Orchowski Home Build Project’. Donations over $250 can request a tax receipt from HFOT. Your generous contribution will show the true American Spirit. For more information about Homes for Our Troops and Nick Orchowski’s Story visit www.homesforourtroops.org. This fundraising is the first phase in the process and employees of DCSO will be continuing to aid in future phases until the Orchowski family takes possession of their home.

Exciting News regarding Tana Dolce! Tana Dolce! We will be temporarily closed for about 2 weeks effective January 11th and will be doing some minor re-decorating (paint, furniture, pastry case addition) and bringing in a "New" look and new feel to Tana Dolce! This will be an expansion of our retail and bakery area and also the creation of more of a "lounge" and retail feel in the lower level with comfy couches and eclectic furniture. We will be doing away with our traditional dining area and go back to our "roots"... a traditional WINE BAR with a simpler menu that will include great appetizers and an extensive dessert menu. Just like our name states DOLCE- we will be the Sweet Hideaway...the place to go in Colorado when you are looking for great wines and dessert and appetizers. As most of you know, when I opened Tana Dolce, I opened it as a Cicchetti Wine Bar and we focused on appetizers and desserts. Then over time we went more into a restaurant menu and feel. Now we are going back to our roots and back to my original vision. GREAT WINES, COCKTAILS, APPETIZERS & DESSERTS! We will re-open on February 1st and will be open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 am to 10pm and will have a great and expanded boutique and bakery area along with our already thriving wine bar and spa. We will continue to be the spot for parties and get togethers too! So book your Spring & Summer events now as we are booking up fast. Don't forget to watch our events calendar at www.tanadolce.com because we will have some amazing themed events and classes coming up such as our Studio Wine Painting Class that is being held monthly (next one is January 10th).
