Castle Rock Chamber Announces Winners Jeff Drabing Named Business Person of the Year Chamber President and CEO, Pam Ridler, announced the new officers and directors for the 2017-2018 Chamber Board at the Chamber’s Annual Banquet awards ceremony last month. The an/cipated award of the evening, the Business Person of the Year, was presented to Jeff Drabing of Rockyard Brewing Company. Drabing thanked the business community for the acknowledgement and reflected on the Rockyard staff and quality of service they provide their valued guests. The Small Business, Ci/zen, Castle Rock Advocate, Ping Lee Jung Volunteer, and Ambassador of the Year award winners were also revealed. The Small Business of the Year award was proudly presented to John Kokish, Kokish & Goldmanis, P.C. Nick Lucey, NickLucey.com was named Ci zen of the Year while Julie Voorhees, Keller Williams Ac&on Realty was honored as the Ping Lee Jung Volunteer of the Year recipient. The Ambassador of the Year award was presented to Be(y Graf of Reliv Interna&onal and Paul Donahue was honored as the Castle Rock Advocate of the Year respec/vely. Farewell from the Chairman of the Board A leIer from the outgoing Chairman of the Board, John Manka Dear Castle Rock Chamber Members and Friends, Wow, where did the year go? It didn't seem that long ago when I took over the reins from former Chair Elyse McNulty. Fortunately for me, she and previous chairs adequately prepared me to take on what ended up being a very sa/sfying year at the helm; and boy, did I ever learn a lot! The Castle Rock Chamber runs like a well oiled machine. ArtFest, WineFest, Business APer Hours (BAH), Luncheons, Trainings, Banquet, Starligh/ng, etc, all seem to go off without a hitch. So what did I learn? It's only possible because President & CEO Pam Ridler and her team along with scores of volunteers, work /relessly behind the scenes to make these events run smoothly and enjoyable for both Chamber members as well as members of our Community. But, it's not just events, it includes the day to day opera/ons of running a chamber with a mul/tude of offerings for chamber members to help them in their businesses through educa/onal and commercial opportuni/es. A lot of things were accomplished this past year as the Chamber grew in both size and influence. One was the Government Interests CommiIee taking on a bigger role in leading the Chamber through poli/cal issues and solu/ons. However, their work is far from done as they inves/gate issues facing Castle Rock like transporta/on and affordable housing. In reflec/on, I feel privileged to have been chair this past year and look forward to fulfilling my duty in the upcoming year as immediate past chair. As I step aside, I feel very confident with the upcoming leadership to bring the Chamber to next level. So, Bernie Greenberg, Chairman and Mark Michaels, Chair Elect, it's /me for you both to take us forward and meet the challenges that face the business community and the Town of Castle Rock. It is also an honor to work with Pam Ridler, the President and CEO. She is one of the most dedicated and diligent leaders in our community. Being a member of the chamber, working on commiIees and serving on the board of directors is part of my commitment to our community and my striving to be a cataly/c leader. I have lived in Douglas County for almost 30 years. I love Castle Rock for its unique history, local charm, its beau/ful views and its people. As said by former chair Mike Tafoya, "I appreciate the diversity of our community from the very rural ranches to our historic downtown and to our upscale suburban areas." I commiIed years ago to do my part every day to promote Castle Rock, it's people and businesses and be part of this community's future and success. Will you join me in this wonderful and fun eﬀort? As the Chairman of the Board, my goal is to help the chamber and other leaders throughout our region to embrace and advance our vision. Give the Town your thoughts about on-street parking If you have thoughts about parking along public streets, including those in your neighborhood, your Town wants to hear them. As Castle Rock thrives, parking along the Town’s streets has become a highly desired amenity. With that in mind, it’s important that parking policies are implemented consistently. That’s why the Town has draPed a policy to guide parking along public streets in neighborhoods and commercial/retail areas. Your feedback is an important part of the process. Proposed policy The Town is proposing to use a policy – rather than Town Code – to address this topic. Policies tend to me more flexible and allow for future change. In summary, the proposed policy would: • Allow on-street parking along public streets as long as it is safely accommodated. • Recognize the various impacts on homes and businesses related to on-street parking and commit the Town to helping impacted residents and businesses address those issues in ways other than restric/ng parking. Specifically, parallel parking would be allowed on public streets (including neighborhood streets) as long as: • Generally, there is s/ll 20 feet of space on the street for other cars to pass through. This provision supports space for emergency service response. • Bike lanes or other mul/-use shoulder lanes are not blocked. Give them your feedback! Then, any necessary changes will be made to the policy, which will then go to Town Council for considera'on. Downtown Parking The Town also knows parking Downtown is a specific topic of interest. 7 Things You Can Do to Improve Your Business Over Your Lunch Hour Find Out What They Like Your customers are more valuable to your business than from just a revenue perspec/ve. Knowing what they respond to can help you shape services and products, create more meaningful content, and engage them more on social media. So, don’t be afraid to ask them what they like. Create a short survey and email it to them or “hang” it on your website if you get a lot of traﬃc. The key here is short but there are a few other things to keep in mind.

Ask for Reviews Depending on the type of business you have, spend a few minutes reaching out to sa/sﬁed customers for reviews, referrals, or tes/monials. It may feel awkward at ﬁrst but these types of social proof go a long way for poten/al customers. Think of it as giving people an opportunity (and a gentle reminder) to share something with their tribe that will be of value to them. Doesn’t everyone need a good plumber or hairstylist? Of course they do. Now give your customers a way to help their tribe. In your communica/on to them explain why reviews are so important to the success of your business. If you’re asking for reviews, make it easy for them to respond by inser/ng URLs to the review site in your email request. If you are asking for tes/monials, post them to your site when you get them. If referrals were what you were aPer, give them an incen/ve to do so or surprise them with a discount later.

Reach Out to a Complementary Business for a Special Program Another way to get more interest in your business is to oﬀer something your compe/tors aren’t. A simple way to do that is to partner with a complementary business for a special oﬀering. For instance, if you’re a health food store you could partner with a local caterer to host a “healthy meals in minutes” program in your store. This could aIract new business for both of you.

Rework Your Social Media Cover Images With the help of easy to use templates on Canva, you can now redesign your cover image on your social media proﬁles during your lunch hour. Keeping them fresh will help aIract more eyes and give consistent visitors something new to look at.

Go Live on Facebook If you have your phone with you, you can go Live on Facebook during your lunch hour. Not sure what to talk about? Think about a ques/on you’re oPen asked at your business and answer it. Encourage people to ask ques/ons of you as well. You can broadcast for up to 90 minutes but keeping it between 15-20 minutes is probably suﬃcient. You’ll get more views if you remain live for at least 15 minutes. Then save the video and post it to your site.

Building Community Leadership The Leadership Douglas County (LDC) program is the best way to learn how things work in Douglas County.

Program Goals of LDC: • Engage, support, and mobilize leaders to make a posi ve difference in their community • Expand each par cipant’s scope of awareness regarding cri cal issues, systems and opportuni es within Douglas County • Increase the leadership effec veness of each par cipant Law enforcement panel included representa/ves from Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Town of Castle Rock, Lone Tree and Parker

The Leadership Douglas County program is designed to bring diverse people together to enhance their experiences, perspec/ves and take their personal and professional leadership journey to the next level. The communi/es within the county serve as the classroom. Par/cipants learn through various channels, including presenta/ons given by prominent speakers within the private and private sectors, in-depth dialog and teambuilding; as well as tours, experien/al learning and other interac/ve experiences. Leadership skills are emphasized in all learning ac/vi/es and a significant class project is a key component of the program. The program begins with a kick-off retreat in September and monthly classes are held on the first Wednesday of each month, October 2017 through June 2018. Over 300 par/cipants have graduated from Leadership Douglas County since 1999. Alumni of Leadership Douglas County have gone on to hold leadership posi/ons with nonprofit and on boards, as volunteers in organiza/ons and serve in elected posi/ons with government at the county, state and na/onal level. "Strong community leaders create strong communi/es. LDC is dedicated to crea/ng a strong community by providing a program for leaders in all fields—whether that is the business, government or nonprofit sector,” said Carrie Buchan, Director of Leadership Douglas County. "Our community's greatest asset is its people, and the impact of great leadership on an organiza/on’s effec/veness is unmistakable.” LDC is currently accep/ng applica/ons for par/cipa/on in its 2017-2018 year with a firm deadline of June 20.
