Developing Leaders in Douglas County Leadership Douglas County History & Open Space Day Host Sponsors: Cherokee Ranch & Castle Founda on, Philip S. Miller Ac vi es Center, Charles Schwab & Co., Trans America Financial Advisors, Inc., Mr. Greg Hernandez
The Leadership Douglas County (LDC) Class of 2016 par cipated in their first monthly session on October 7, with an introduc on to Douglas County History and Open Space. The day began in Sedalia at the 1450’s ScoLsh-style Cherokee Castle where Mildred Mon que Genevieve “Tweet” Kimball lived for nearly fi-y years before turning the land, her prize winning Santa Gertrudis ca>le, the castle and its collec ons, into a permanent legacy, by establishing a founda on that has maintained the estate for public benefit since her death in 1999. Douglas County Open Space Natural Resources Specialist Jackie Sanderson hosted the class at the privately held Prairie Canyon Ranch, where pastures have had ca>le almost con nuously since Frederick Bartruff, a German immigrant, created a homestead in the early 1860s. Douglas County invites the public to visit the Ranch once a year, in August, or the Ranch may be visited by appointment.
Class par cipants were challenged to consider their leadership as a 24/7 commitment—“Elite Leadership”—rather than an eight hour job. Greg Hernandez, author of Refining Moments, provided strategies for leaders and encouraged the class to not to zoom past the moments that can make us, break us, shape us and, if we allow, refine us.
For more informa on on the Leadership Douglas County program, please visit leadershipdouglascounty.org, call Carrie Buchan at (720) 440-3726 or email info@leadershipdouglascounty.com.
Tweet’ Kimball’s vision and generous bequest. Douglas County’s inten onal commitment to preserve, protect and maintain open spaces for its ci zens. Castle Rock’s use of dedicated funds to provide indoor and outdoor recrea onal ac vi es and experiences for residents. Elite Leadership. None of these happen by wishful thinking. All of these require an inten onal and relentless focus on personal and community vision and mission. If you are interested in applying to the LDC program and would like to preview the program by a ending a class day, please let us know! Agendas are posted one week prior to each class, which meets on the first Wednesday of each month.
“Be inten onal, grateful, ac ve, and disrup ve to find your purpose, be successful and leave a legacy.“ Class of 2016 par cipant
