Recently the state’s economists presented their quarterly forecasts. In the short term, the good news is – the Governor’s Office (OSPB) raised their General Fund forecast for this year by $239 million for FY 2012-13, and the Legislative Council similarly raised their forecast for this year by $83.7 million which means the short-term budget figures look strong. The Governor’s budget priorities for FY 201314, Henry Sobanet, Director of OSPB, says:

The governor’s office “believes it will be able to fund K-12 Enrollment and Inflation in FY 2013-14”.

On Medicaid, they will likely need to request an additional $100 million – though there is a slight flattening of caseload growth.

Whither the Entrepreneurs? We hear it all the time that small business is how we will see growth and be the savor that turns our economy around in the foreseeable future. The Castle Rock Economic Partnership (Town, Chamber, Castle Rock EDC, DDA & DBA) continue our partnership and collaborate to make significant projects and initiatives that will move Castle Rock’s economy forward. But according to research done by Tim Kane of the Hudson Institute, entrepreneurship in America is on the decline. Among some of his findings: •

company has completed over a half billion dollars million worth of construction in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and is currently pursuing projects in Texas. The company specializes in commercial construction, design-build, historic restoration, and tenant improvement projects. The company recently made history with two simultaneous groundbreakings. In 27 years of operation, this was the first time White Construction Group hosted groundbreakings on the same day, for two projects over five million dollars. On August 24th White Construction Group broke ground on the Medical and Dental Center of Castle Pines. This $7.5 million, 26,000 square foot project will offer new condominium offices for up to seven practices. Just over twenty miles north in Denver, White Construction Group was celebrating another groundbreaking at the southeast corner of West Colfax and Irving Street for a n ew 26,000 square foot, 5.6 million dollar library. Over the years, White Construction Group has developed a sterling reputation for integrity, craftsmanship, and hard work -- along with an impressive roster of completed projects, satisfied clients, and respected industry partners. qualifies her to write Missing Max: Finding Hope After My Marine Son’s Death are her experiences as the mother of a Marine son deployed to, and killed in, Afghanistan. On that topic, she is a subject matter expert. Missing Max is a compelling story of Julie’s journey of the extraordinary events surrounding the death of her Marine son, a working dog handler in Afghanistan. You will share her despair, fears, tears and finally, her hope as she moves through the days, weeks and months following word of Max's injury, and then his death. Her story will encourage listeners to live a life that is focused on making their lost loved-one proud. She has first hand experience with moving through the grieving process and, through her faith and the love of family and friends, beginning the healing process and going forward with her life. Julie will challenge you to examine your thoughts on the afterlife, as well as your faith. Her experience has had a profound effect on her ability to move forward. Town Council continued its efforts to preserve open space for recreation and environmental preservation Tuesday when it voted unanimously to acquire 82 acres of open space, which will help complete a critical link in a much larger trail effort. The acquired land is at the end of South Perry Street. It is one of the last pieces of the original Philip S. Future for Families Gala is Friday, October 19th. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Future for Families Gala is a formal adult evening benefiting the Women's Crisis and Family Outreach Center, which serves Douglas County residents. The event includes dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions, and live entertainment from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at the Inverness Hotel and Conference Center located at 200 Inverness Drive West. A small program is included. Tickets are $125 each or $1,500 for a table of 10. The evening's keynote speaker will be Mark Wynn. Trick or Treat Street is quickly becoming parents’ go-to community event for safe Halloween fun. This year the event is Oct. 31, with the costume contest and festival at Festival Park at Perry and Second streets, while trickor-treating runs from 2 pm until 5 pm at downtown businesses. Members in the News Attorney Receives Legion of Merit Aaron Barrick, the Chief Civil Litigator and Managing Director, of Folkestad Fazekas Barrick & Patoile, P.C. received the Legion of Merit from the Department of Defense at his retirement ceremony from the United States Air Force Reserves on August 5, 2012. He received the Legion of Merit for his meritorious service during more than 21 years of military service to his country. He received the award from the Adjutant General for the State of Colorado, Major General H. Michael Edwards, and also received a congratulatory letter from President Obama and Governor Hickenlopper for his service. Arapahoe Community College’s Laura Johnson earns Lanza Memorial Scholarship. Arapahoe Community College's Laura Johnson has been selected as one of only 20 nationwide students to receive Phi Theta Kappa's 2012 Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarship. The Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarship recognizes the outstanding academic and leadership accomplishments of students enrolled in registered nursing, respiratory care or emergency medical services associate degree programs. Johnson, a Denver native, is a third-semester student in the ACC Nursing Program. As a Lanza Scholar, Johnson will receive a $2,500 scholarship and a commemorative certificate. Lanza Scholars will be presented with their ce rtificates at the 2013 Phi Theta Kappa Annual Convention (Apr. 4-6 in San Jose, Calif.) The Goddard School®, the premier preschool for children from six weeks to six years, located at 4340 Woodslands Blvd is hosting a their Third Annual Ultimate Block Party and Open House on Friday, October 5th from 4pm to 8pm. Stroller Strides in Castle Rock will be celebrating their 2 year anniversary on Friday, October 12th! All moms are invited to come join their huge celebration! There will be a free workout class from 9:30-10:30 am at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, followed by a fun party with refreshments, goody bag giveaways for all attendees, awesome raffle prizes, huge membership discounts and a free children’s music class from TuneBugs Music Classes! Because they value giving back to our local community, donations will also be collected for the Women's Crisis Center and Family Outreach Center in Castle Rock. Stroller Strides is a total body fitness program for moms with their kids in the stroller. No childcare is needed! Classes also benefit the kids in the stroller as we weave songs, counting, and other fun games in to class to not only entertain the kids while the moms get a great workout, the kids are learning as well. Celebrate Fall Family Fun at CALF's Harvest Day- Good Old Fashion Fun in the Country- Pumpkins, carriage rides and games are just a few of the time honored fall harvest traditions and old-fashioned family fun that will be celebrated at Colorado Agriculture Leadership Foundation's Lowell Ranch on Plum Creek on Saturday, October 14. Everyone is welcome between 10 am and 3:00 pm to stroll the grounds, see the livestock, choose the perfect pumpkins right out of the patch, and view the various educational demonstrations and agricultural booths. While the hayrides, carriage rides, pumpkins and other activities are available for a nominal fee, which helps support CALF's mission of Connecting People to Agriculture, admission to Harvest Day is free courtesy of Medved Castle Rock -- Douglas County's full service dealership and community partner. Sunday, November 4th at 11am, Yogi goes into hibernation! First, though, Yogi needs to gather up what he will need for winter. You can help by bringing him food! Anything Yogi doesn’t eat, he will be giving to the Douglas County Task Force to help families in need. This year, Yogi would really like canned goods containing lots of protein. These include baked beans, canned fish and meat, chili with meat, peanut butter and hearty soups. Of course, Yogi is smarter than your average bear, so he won't eat expired food or food that has already been opened. You can drop off donations for Yogi’s hibernation at the campground (Exit 174 on I-25 just south of Castle Rock) anytime between now and November 4th. You can also join them on November 4th at 11 am to say good night as Yogi goes into his cabin for a long winte r’s nap! 17

It was constructed with Castle Rock Rhyolite in 1889 by John and Emma Lofe. The house was purchased by Cha rles Palm a nd then by Andrew and Hedvig Ande rson. The same year the house had been built Victoria was born in Castle Rock to Andrew and He dvig. Victoria attended school in Castle Rock and then became a local teacher. In 1910, at age 21, Victoria married Milton Honnold. Milton was kille d in an accident less than a year afte r their marriage, leaving Victoria suddenly a pregnant widow at age 22. Their son, Milton, was born two m onths late r. In 1917 Victoria inhe rited this house from he r pa rents and she and Milton, now 5 years old, moved in. Two years later she married Thorwald Chris tensen of Denmark at this house. Together they had 2 childre n. Thorwald was a leade r in civic affairs for 50 years, but Victoria was also a prominent leade r in

In Decembe r of 1942 Victoria suffe red a s troke while a t an Easte rn Star meeting. She was returned to her home and passed away at the age of 53. Thorwald followed his wife in 1957. In 1992 the Chamber of Commerce bought Victoria’s house and had it landma rked in 1994. In 1996 it was renovated to meet the Chambe r’s needs. The Castle Rock Chamber was recently named the proud recipient of not one but three BEST OF THE BEST 2012 nominations. Readers of the Colorado Community Media Newspapers nominated businesses and organizations in multiple categories.
