CEO Focus A le er from our CEO, Pam Ridler

Have you ever wondered how decisions are made regarding our communi es’ future infrastructure? It isn’t done lightly;

Take Poli/cal Ac/on

there are so many people involved, which include Town and County leadership, staff, our friends at the EDC, Downtown Alliance and your own Chamber that work to inves/gate, study and implement planning projects. Recently our Castle Rock Economic Partnership hosted a very informa/ve mee/ng with over 100 people in a endance to hear from Elizabeth Garner, State Demographer on Growth, Impact and Change. The discussion focused on popula/on migra/on into our state. So, what’s going to happen and how do we prepare when 2 million more people come into Colorado in the next 20+ years and how do we in Douglas County plan, so that we live, work and play in an even be er place than we have today? Can our businesses con/nue to a ract and retain the best and the brightest for us to employ? Can we backfill with the right people now that Colorado is seeing 25% of our popula/on over the age of 65 with projec/ons of this popula/on to be 77% larger than it was in 2015 growing to over 1.3 million? Darn it, we’re geIng old fast, so is the state, is Douglas County and Castle Rock going to be ready for the opportuni/es and changes to the labor force, income, industrial mix, housing and transporta/on? We are also becoming more racially and ethnically diverse; especially the newest entrants into the labor force, and the educa/onal gap con/nues. Will we have enough qualified people to fill jobs? Partnerships and efforts are in process now with our new Castle Rock Collabora/on Campus moving forward to work on crea/ng programing around appren/ceships to train and connect our youth with our local employers. Your Chamber, along with our many partners, will con/nue to focus on solu/ons for the future of Castle Rock and Douglas County. Throughout this year we will conduct focus groups, hos/ng the upcoming Horizon Lunch, job fairs and informa/onal mee/ngs to help you engage with local businesses and community leadership.

There Are Many Ways to Get Involved! The Chamber’s Government Interests Commi ee (GIC) provides our business community with a proac/ve voice and advocate regarding governmental issues; and promotes economic interests, which contributes to the quality of life of Castle Rock. This program facilitates communica/on and educa/on between the business community, local, and state governments. A variety of elected officials, concerned members and businesspeople meet to discuss and clarify issues that are affec/ng our community today, tomorrow and in the future.

T h e r e A r e M a n y

Over the summer, the na/onal news has focused on the country's unse led poli/cal climate. Meanwhile, the U.S. economy con/nues to chug along. The advance es/mate of Q2 real GDP was 2.6%, an improvement over Q1. The unemployment rate is 4.3% and 2.2 million jobs will be added this year. Colorado's job growth con/nues to be diversified and manageable - which is good. By Colorado standards it is disappoin/ng in some areas. Overall job and real GDP growth is plagued by the 2.4% unemployment rate. Colorado is on track to add 50,700 jobs this year.

It is frustra/ng to see companies struggle when they cannot find workers to meet the demand from their customers. At the same /me, these challenges are much easier to deal with than the 8.7% rate of unemployment the state experienced 6 years ago.
