Map of Conservancy Land

Welcome Dear Artist, We are excited to have you as one of our ten featured painters for the 2024 Catalina: The Wild Side Art Show. We hope all the information you might need in planning is in this booklet. Please keep a copy of it on-hand to use, as it is full of details that will make your trips and experience preparing for the 2024 show easier. The goals for this show are to sell all of your paintings and to share the beauty of Catalina’s landscapes with our supporters. The Conservancy may buy pieces from the show to add to its art collection that is permanently on display at the Trailhead visitor center in Avalon. The Conservancy will only consider paintings that depict Conservancy property for this collection. Please reference the map of Conservancy land on page 13 for details on these locations, or contact us if you have any questions or need clarification on a particular part of the Island. Artists will receive 60% of the sales price and the Catalina Island Conservancy will receive 40% of the sales price. Please feel free to include information about the show on your websites and in your newsletters - we will have graphics for your use and a link for online registration. If you have someone you want to make sure receives a hard copy of the invitation, please send their information to the Conservancy and they will be added to the mailing list. We are so glad to have you joining us this year, and we are looking forward to another successful trip to the wild side! Sincerely,

The Wild Side Committee 2

Catalina: The Wild Side, celebrates the history of plein air art and painting on Catalina Island, and includes the familiar sights of Avalon, but also features the lands beyond—Catalina’s wild side. Proceeds from this show benefit the Conservancy and are used to support its programs in conservation, education and recreation, as well as maintain and grow a permanent collection of art that reflects the lands of the Conservancy and its changes over time. The paintings acquired during previous shows are permanently on display for the public in the Conservancy’s Trailhead visitor center in Avalon and the Conservancy offices. For the last half century and counting, the Conservancy has been preserving Catalina Island’s timeless nature. Through its ongoing efforts, the Conservancy protects the magnificent natural and cultural heritage of Santa Catalina Island, stewarding approximately 42,000 acres of land, 60 miles of rugged shoreline, more than 200 miles of roads, as well as the Airport in the Sky and the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden. The Conservancy works actively to keep Catalina wild by engaging in conservation and restoration efforts that have roots in sound science. By inspiring visitors to become responsible stewards of the living Earth, the Conservancy helps to ensure that today’s children and future generations will be able to enjoy Catalina Island’s abundance of natural beauty. Planning for the Show Plein Air Painting on Catalina Island through August. We hope you will be able to come and spend as much time as you need to paint on Catalina— at least once, and more often if you choose. Please paint at least 50% of your paintings of the wild side! The Conservancy will only purchase paintings of Conservancy lands, properties and activities. Please refer to the map on page 13 and the ideas on page 11 to understand what subjects the Conservancy is interested in. Questions are always welcome. Many collectors enjoy the views and activities of Avalon and Two Harbors, as well. We also welcome studio work from your plein air studies in the show. Please advise of your visit at least 4-6 weeks in advance if you would like help with any arrangements. When painting in the wild side, safety comes first! Please paint in pairs, be cautious of wildlife and keep your distance from wild animals (especially the bison). Please be prepared to be in the wilderness for the length of your schedule—be sure to bring water, food and protection from the elements.

Helpful Information What will the weather be like? We always recommend dressing in layers. Depending on where you are painting, it can be quite cool and windy or quite warm and sunny. Weather conditions may cause transportation cancellations. Plan ahead and consider back-up locations. Roads close when raining, and boats maybe be canceled with high winds. Where do I find art supplies on Catalina? There are no art supply stores on the Island. The nearest store is Michael’s Art Supply in Lakewood. Please plan to bring a sufficient amount of all the supplies that you might need. If you are in a pinch, we might be able to have someone in Long Beach pick-up your purchase for you and send by helicopter* to Avalon. (562) 633-1913 • www.michaels.com • 4000 Hardwick Street, Lakewood, CA 90712 *Helicopter air freight charges apply—for small items, usually $15 Are there any restricted supplies I cannot bring? The cross-channel boat services prohibit carrying flammable materials on board. Included in this list of flammable materials are turpentine, paint thinner, etc. Chet’s Hardware (now located where Vons Express used to be at 117 Catalina) stocks quart and gallon sizes of odorless mineral spirits. Additionally, baggage waivers releasing the carrier from any liability are required for all non-luggage items. Non-luggage items include, but are not limited to: Fishing poles (enclosed in carrying case), golf clubs and golf bags, beach chairs, tool boxes, ice chests, carts, two-wheeled carts, strollers, surfboards, bikes, sleeping bags and tents. Easels may fall into this category. Baggage waivers may be obtained at the ticket window or from a dock person
