The ideas presented in this conceptual design package are intended for the future development of a Fine Art Museum, an Artist-in Residence Village, and a large Sculpture Park for the town of Andrews, North Carolina. This is a starting point for the project and will help develop the concepts and details that will lead to the creation of these new artistic centers. A fundamental objective is to not only link these three activities with each other but also with the existing fabric of Andrews, creating a sense of community and culture.

The artist-in-residence village is a place for creation and teaching as well as public demonstration of the workings of local craftsmen and women. Its activities are intrinsically linked to those of the Museum where exhibitions of new works created by local artists and students can be displayed to the public.

The temporary Museum is conceived as part of the larger complex of art-related facilities and activities intended for visitors and residents. The creation of a Plaza, adjacent to the existing Andrews Public Library, acts as an entry point to the Museum, a center for public gatherings and a space to display exterior exhibitions of art work. It is a new focal point for social activity within the town, enlivening the area and becoming a destination point near the heart of the community.

The 32-acre sculpture park is conceived as a unique, free facility combining recreational features with an outstanding exhibition of contemporary large-scale sculptures. It will extend the reach of the Museum beyond the confines of the building and expand the experience of contemporary art within nature for the community and visitors. It will also offer established as well as emerging local, national and international artists the possiblity to create and exhibit a broad range of large scale work. The new Andrews Museum of Art and partnering facilities, together with the existing strength and richness of the community of Andrews, will ensure future generations will grow in a community defined by a culture of creativity rather than a culture of consumer strip malls.

The planned 6,500 square foot public plaza between the Andrews Public Library and proposed Museum serves as an activity link between the pedestrians and vehicles traveling along Main Street to the cultural activities within the Museum. It will create a focus of community activity, allowing people to flow into the Museum exhibition spaces and Community Art Center as well as form an informal gateway to the 32 Acre Sculpture Park to the Northwest. The temporary Museum of Art houses a gallery space of 2,800 Square Feet along with office and ancillary spaces and a Cafe linked with a gift shop open to the public. The activities in and around the building will no doubt form a community focal point and may lend the center to taking on the broader role of an information center for regional art and culture. 7 8

The Plaza, Museum, and Community Center will create a memorable place for local residents as well as visitors to Andrews. The events generated within these spaces will be augmented by the student and professional work at the neighboring Artist-in Residence Village, whose form and programing will complement the activites of the Museum.

The Museum is more than simply an exhibition space but is perceived as a gateway into the artistic and cultural expression of the larger community. Along with the Community Art Center and Artist-in Residence village, it will serve as a catalyst for change and revitalization of downtown Andrews.

Plan Key

The Andrews Valley Museum of Art will have an influence which extends far beyond the physical envelope of the building. The design approach takes into account the surrounding town environment and will create a positive influence on many levels within the community. The Museum is designed to have a strong visual and cultural presence in Andrews and serve as a motivating force for future urban renewal efforts. The entry, which marks the end of the treelined promenade along Main Street from the Artist Residences to the Museum Plaza, is marked with a strong visual clue to the lively activity inside. Lighting of the entry at night will create a signal to the life and activity inside the exhibition spaces and a streetlight for those in the Plaza. The Museum will participate with the life of the community even when one does not enter it’s built envelope.

The art Museum linked with the proposed Artist Village and large sculptural park will create many opportunities for the visitor to explore art and creativity together. Outside of the vibrant and accessible downtown commercial area, the Sculptural Park will include many places for quiet walks of discovery adding a tremendous asset to the town.
