Chautauqua AVÉ coming October 11 - 19

article by Pamela Carman

The seventh annual Chautauqua festival (pronounced Shatock-kwa), The Andrews Valley Experience, will open Saturday, October 11th, with an Arts and Crafts festival and street fair in downtown Andrews. This popular event featrues food, music, dancers and crafts from around western North Carolina. All entertainment is free, so come join the fun on the main street of town.

Throughout the week, there are lectures, entertainment, and inspirational talks daily. Are you a Civil War buff? You will want to hear Dr. Richard Starnes discuss The Divided Mind of Civil War North Carolina. Did you ever wonder why you spend half your earnings on you favorite pet? Come hear Dr. Hal Herzon explain this phenomenon in his talk, Why People Love Pets. Opening night, the 11th, at the Valleytown Cultural Arts Center, the annual Mountain Music Jamboree will rattle the windows and rock the town. Other music performances will be Ron Lasater and Judy Hutchinson, Lessie Williams and The St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church All Male Chorus, the Atlanta group High Cotton, The Andrews High School Jazz Band, the musical duo, Lewis and Lewis, and Jack Davis.

The Andrews Valley Experience offers something for children, too. Susan Vande Weghe and The Mountain Marionettes will return for their performance of Stories from Aunt Nelly’s Mountain. Come watch your children enjoy themselves while you become a kid, once again, too!

Western NC’s own Gary Carden will present Blow the Tannery Whistle, an evening of unforgetable storytelling. Dr. Walter Ziffer, a theologian and Holocaust survivor, will discuss Lost in Translation: When Holy Writ Becomes Wholly Wrong, and Callie Dobson Moore will tell us how we can have economic growth while protecting the quality of our water supply.

There’s more! LOTS MORE!

Visit us online at www.chautauqua-ave.org and click on the calendar link to see all the entertaining, educational, and fascinating presentations available in Andrews during the 7th annual Chautauqua AVÉ week-long festival.

And now they are coming to Murphy! Performing at Aardvark Satellite on US 64W, the evening of September 6th, after the last big ride of the summer sponsored by Rideable Customs. For more information about the performance contact What is more, the RATZ band has not limited itself Nick Georgopolous at (828) 8379323 or Rideable Customs to learn more about the bike run: simply to touring the Southern United States. In 2002 the band toured Great Britain, resulting in 970 Settawig Rd Brasstown, Nc 28902 (828) 837a live Double CD recorded at The Cavern Club in 7333 Liverpool, England where “Beatlemania” began! FEATURED ARTISTS Juanita Postell, Catherine Bryson & Linda Bell HANDMADE WITH LOVING CARE

Christmas is for Grandmas to make special soft and cuddly toys for children, especially keepsake dolls like the ones Juanita Postell makes. She has fourteen grandchildren and twenty five great-grand’s that keep her busy year round and she loves every minute of it. Of course, the kids do too as she sews special quilts, makes monkey soft toys and Raggedy Ann and Andy’s just for them. Now, she also has created a few for the Serenity Shoppe and we are delighted. She has also designed a Military Quilt which would be such a heart felt gift for a military family.

And then there is Linda Bell, who has created her own stitch for crocheting baby Afghans in blue or pink and she is working on copyrighting the stitch. She has crocheted very long and large Afghans for folks who are more than six feet tall and will do special orders for special sizes. These are just a few of the talented folds who display their wares at the Serenity Shoppe and they encourage visitors to come in, sit awhile, where they are more than willing to answer questions about their craft.

The Shoppe is filled with handmade pottery, ceramics, jewelry, silk floral designs, candles, essential oils, herbs, watercolors, hand made greetings cards, etc. So, if you haven’t dropped by, it Catherine Bryson also quilts with special folks in mind. Libraries:The Memory of Mankind By Colleen Messina

If you traveled back in time with your library card, hoping to check out some ancient books, you would discover that libraries were quite different long ago. Books were rare and valuable, and no librarians encouraged you to take them home. In fact, you would get in trouble if you did! Five thousand years ago in Mesopotamia, the Sumerians tied their clay tablets together with twine and stored them in baskets. Librarians called the Keepers of the Tablets fiercely guarded the books, and you would not be able to check them out because they were so fragile. If you think having an overdue book is bad, imagine having to face an angry Keeper after breaking a clay tablet! At about the same time in history, Egyptian scribes kept track of papyrus scrolls in the temples, but the average Egyptian never saw those books and definitely couldn’t take them home! One other spot you would probably visit on a tour of ancient libraries was the magnificent Chinese Imperial Library in the Forbidden City, which belonged to the Emperor of China. However, this library wasn’t at all like our public libraries today. If you were a commoner, you couldn’t even go into the Forbidden City. If you did manage to sneak over its high walls and into the library, the Imperial librarians would certainly summon the guards to get rid of you! In the Hall of Literary Glory, the emperor studied selections from his 36,000 books. Few Chinese people had access to books 5,000 years ago. The Greeks handled things differently. They gave everyone access to books because they loved learning. Their libraries contained scrolls on all subjects ranging from mathematics to myths. They built the most magnificent library in the world in Alexandria. Alexandria was on the northern coast of Egypt, and the great library of Alexandria existed for more than 900 years. It contained over 700,000 scrolls, which was the equivalent of 100,000 modern books. The librarians wanted their library to have a copy of every book ever written, so soldiers searched all the ships that came into the harbor. When the soldiers found books, they seized them! Library scribes then copied the manuscripts. See LIBRARIES P.7
