Service Driven

Community Outreach

Get on board with the area’s fastest growing community newspaper!

PUBLISHER’S NOTE: Our Unique Region Just recently, I officially accepted my position as sole Publisher of the Tri-state News & Shoppers Guide. I am humbled because I recognize that, without the caring personality and business savvy of my partner and predecessor, I wouldn’t Catherine “Cat” Carroll have this opportunity. Wayne Edrington is a fine man of 82 years who, wherever he has resided, has served his communities while attending to his own family’s needs. Wayne is the kind of person who reaches out to help others. I thank Wayne for his wisdom and for having enough confidence in me to pass me the torch as publisher of this newspaper. I will continue to keep alive our original dream of publishing a newspaper that serves the communities in the region across state borders and one that both connects people and presents the many exciting things to do in our area. We will continue to invite visitors and passers-through to see, visit, and participate in everything from arts and entertainment to outdoor adventures; from classrooms to crafters; and from antique shopping to bargain hunting. Our area’s hardworking event planners, non-profit organizations, and town officials help produce and highlight many opportunities for family members, from

the youngest to the most elderly, to enjoy the entertainment, crafts, music and life style of our unique region. Geographically, we are unique. Our ancient foothills have deep gorges that wind their way through snuggled mountains and abundantly vegetated valleys. Veins of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs intersect our rolling hills and open pastures. To gaze upon the landscapes of our area is a welcome escape for those whose home is the cramped, noisy, concrete metropolises that lie at the outer corners of our service area. For some, our area is a short drive to paradise; for many of us, this is home and we have no desire to ever leave. People who are born and raised here seem to know that they live in an enchantingly desirable surrounding because they have seen the awe and wonder in the eyes of visitors. Locals want to preserve the simple life they have enjoyed and visitors want to experience it. Herein lies the dilemma- the blending of people. From the locals’ perspective, the newcomers bring change. For the newcomers, the locals resist change, even when it comes with the best of intentions. Both locals and newcomers want to preserve the natural landscapes, the history and the uniqueness of each community, because this is what attracted them to this area in the first place. Both locals and newcomers want to bring to the community, in a contributive way, some of their own skills, talents, expertise, and small business

opportunities. I feel that all our citizens should be involved in community affairs and should exert their resistance to those they believe want changes that will harm the environment and the culture that is our area’s attractions, but we must not resist change solely for change’s sake. Each day, new people arrive in our area who have the knowledge, resources, and desire to contribute in meaningful ways and who want to be a positive part of the process of inevitable change that our area faces. While my vision of this newspaper is not to steer opinions, it is a tool for local and newcomer voices to be heard. My intention is to highlight all of the local communities’ activities, hopefully capturing photos and stories that impress travelers to visit and enjoy the sights and sounds of each unique town and to experience the charm that beckons us to return when we have been away. I want to thank the advertisers who make this publication possible. I also thank the readers and visitors who use our publication as a guide to shop locally and to attend local events and attractions. Thank you all for giving me such a wonderful opportunity to serve the communities I love the most in the whole world. Please contact us with your stories, ideas, and announcements; let us promote your business and, by becoming the voice of our region, make this paper a greater tool for the economic and social advance of our unique region.

FIND THE THREE KINGS FOR A CHANCE TO WIN

$100

With the holiday season just around the corner, here’s a fun way to give you a chance to win some extra money for Christmas! We encourage you to support our local communities by shopping in local businesses for this Christmas. Every year, we at Tri-state News & Shoppers Guide, look for ways to help others in our community. This year we are doing three things, for three months leading up to Christmas 2008.

1. We are selling items from JustFundraising.com’s “Warm and Wonderful” holiday gift collection booklet. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to local charitable organizations. 2. We are hiding “The Three Kings” from the nativity story

of Jesus’ birth in our last three issues of the year. One king is hidden somewhere inside of each issue for October, November and December. Collect all three kings (cut them out) and bring them to the caroling event. You must exchange your three kings for a ticket. You may enter your ticket in the drawing.

Note: This drawing is separate from our survey/ballot contest. Finding the kings does not enter you into the survey/prize give-away drawing.

3. Our December issue will have a special keepsake-quality insert of traditional caroling songs. Using this as our songbook, we will host, on December 13, a caroling sing-along and will draw for prizes from our published survery/ballot box contest. See our newspaper for information on our survey and how you can participate. To enter the survey/prize give-away drawing simply fill out the short survey published in this issue and mail in to: Tri-state News, PO Box 1266, Murphy, NC 28906 or fill out the survey and place it in one of the ballot boxes to be placed in local businesses beginning in November. These don’t count, but here is a hint of what you are looking for: 1 king per issue = 3 total

For the “Three Kings” cash give-away, one winner will receive $100 cash.

Advertisers: Sign up now to get in the ‘Special Pull-out” Caroling Book insert and make a lasting impression. Space is limited. For more information call: (828) 835-3919

minutes after lunch, and 45 minutes in the afternoon. Teachers rarely gave homework. Like Pap, my 8th grade teacher, Mr. Moffitt, was my favorite teacher. He was also principal of the school.

They always got out in early May so kids could help their parents plant crops. When Pap first started school, the desks still had a place to hold a bottle of ink. The school did not serve breakfast. Lunch cost 10 cents and included 3 vegetables, a meat, and bread. Pap worked in the cafeteria to pay for his lunch. All you needed for school was a pencil and paper. Pap had an 8th grade teacher, Mr. Garrison, who let them do all their work on the chalk board. No taking notes, no homework; students proved they understood by doing a problem on the board. Pap said he learned more from Mr. Garrison than all the other teachers he had put together. My brothers and I went to school in the same old building Pap did. When we attended the school: Students had to go outside to use the restrooms which were on the backside of the building just off the porches. I worked in the cafeteria, not to pay for lunch, but just to help out the ladies. Sometimes I got to help in the office, which made me feel very important. The only supplies I remember needing were paper and pencils. Maybe a notebook in the older grades, but I don’t think so. Even in middle school we had recess; We had 10 minutes each morning, 30

CHRISTMAS GIVE-AWAY SURVEY

My daughters are the 3rd generation of my family to attend Martin’s Creek Elementary School. It began with Pap (from the left side he is the first boy in the second row). The school was built in 1928. When Pap attended in the 40s, the school had no electricity, but did have a generator to pump water into the restrooms. There was a hand dug well with a bucket to draw up water. Pap shared some interesting things about his school days with me:

I loved the old school building. There was just something about the wood floors and the high ceilings that called out to me. Sadly, the school burnt to the ground about 15 or 16 years ago. Down the road a little ways, the county built a new school for our community to use. It’s a nicer, more modern building, but I still wish my girls could have gone to school in the original building Pap and I did. One thing that has definitely changed since mine and Pap’s school days is the list of supplies that’s required for school. The girls needed 5 notebooks, 3 folders, 1 binder, notebook paper, pencils, red pens, black or blue pens, scissors, glue, book-covers, a jump drive, colored pencils and a clean pair of shoes for gym.

Bobbie Mason, retired instructor from Tri-County Community College, has been painting with watercolors for several years. She says she is overcome by the beauty of our planet and tries to capture some of this beauty in her Heaven and Earth Series. Her greeting cards are appropriate for all occasions. Primarily a nature artist, Bobbie does some contemporary art. Her art, and a book of poetry by her daughter, Leslie, can be purchases at The Serenity Shoppe. As a member of the Art League of the Smokies, Bobbie’s art is on exhibit, once a year, with this group. She has won several blue ribbons at the North Carolina State Fair and, for a number of years, has a studio in Copperhill, Tennessee. Bobbie has attended workshops with Tony Couch, Robert Burridge, Pat Weaver, Beryl Stokley, and others. Bobbie is a hostess at The Serenity Shoppe each Wednesday afternoon and she would be delighted for visitors to watch as she paints some of her beautiful note cards. She explains some of her techniques and answers questions for patrons. Eve Miranda, another artist represented at the Shoppe, will be part of a documentary about Bent Creek Institute. Ms. Miranda is renown as a “mountain medicine woman” and will show some of the many plants that her family has used for medicine, such as autumn olive, joe-pye weed, and poke. The documentary is being filmed by American Green.
