Come Explore Diverse Des Moines! WE LC O M E TO D E S M O IN E S , where we do things differently. We’re not a paint-by-numbers, sleepy Midwest town. We’re a diverse and vibrant collection of people, places, traditions, and experiences ready to be engaged and discovered. Consider this guide your road map to discovery. Greater Des Moines has always been greater than the sum of its parts. We have a beautiful capitol that anchors a walkable and dynamic downtown filled with exciting eateries, trendy bars, and amazing attractions. But venture off the beaten path and you’ll discover over a dozen thriving communities, some of which we highlight in a feature on our town squares. Our burbs are anything but boring. Speaking of paths, there are over 800 miles of them in Greater Des Moines, and one of the best ways to get a lay of the land is on two wheels. We offer routes with great stops along the way. Whether you’re after a beer or time to bond with your family, we’ve got something in your wheelhouse. That’s because in Des Moines, there’s something for everyone, and everyone is welcome. LGBTQ+ travelers will want to check out our story on year-round activities and one of the best Pride festivals in the Midwest. And if you think we’re all red meat and cold beer (we do love both), the spotlight on vegan food and mocktails will open your eyes – and get your taste buds tingling – to a whole new world of flavor. Complement the inspiration in this guide with additional ideas on our all-new website. With custom itineraries and our popular Des Best lists, it’s never been easier to fill out your bucket list. And if you see one of the ubiquitous Des Best emblems in store windows around town, you know that place has been recognized by locals as one of the best around. There are so many ways to discover Des Moines, and in the end, all roads lead to fun. So what are you waiting for? Let’s go!

Spring Forward F U N I S I N F U LL BLO O M come springtime in Greater Des Moines, where winter malaise inspires the itch for adventure once the snow melts. Scratch that itch at Blank Park Zoo (7401 SW 9th Street, Des Moines), Iowa’s largest zoo with over 100 different animal species, including giraffes, sea lions, penguins, and the impossibly charming red pandas. Turns out we’re not all pigs and cows after all. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but everyone who has been to the Des Moines Art Center (4700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines) agrees that it’s quite the sight to behold. This free museum showcases modern and contemporary art, with signature works from Georgia O’Keeffe and Edward Hopper, along with an impressive array of special exhibitions. Afterwards, you can stop and smell the roses, literally, the Rose Garden, and take a stroll through Greenwood Park and snap a selfie with the “Three Cairns” egg-shape stone structure.

Hello Summer F UN TA K E S F L IG H T at the National Balloon Classic (15335 Jewell Street, Indianola), taking place over nine days at the end of July in Indianola. More than 100 hot air balloons paint the sky with brilliant colors at sunrise and sunset each day. With balloon rides and competitions, concerts, fireworks, and special events like Nite Glow, it’s your Instagram feed’s favorite event of the year. No summer bucket list is complete without a trip to Adventureland Resort (3200 Adventureland Drive, Altoona), home to both an amusement park and attached water park. For those looking for nostalgia, there’s the wooden coasters, a log ride, and ice cream. For thrill seekers, there’s the Pirates’ Plummet speed slide, the Monster infinity coaster, and for those of a certain age, a beverage from the beer and wine tent. Either way, you’ll enjoy the ride.

Fall Into Autumn HO M E TO P U M PK IN S P ICE and everything nice, Center Grove Orchard (32835 610th Avenue, Cambridge) reminds us why we love fall. The cornucopia of fun includes hayrides, bottle-feeding baby goats, a corn pool, super slides, sunflower meadow, and 25-acre pumpkin patch. And that’s not to mention the kettle corn, apple cider donuts, and s’more ice cream shakes. Channel the flannel and make some lifetime memories. Nothing colors our memories of fall like a hike among the changing leaves, and there are few better places than Jester Park (12130 NW 128th Street, Granger). The eight miles of hiking trails are just part of the journey at Jester, where you enjoy activities like miniature (and regular) golf, horseback riding, camping, a bouldering room, and our favorite, elk and bison viewing. Do Winter Warmer TH ERE A RE PLE N T Y O F WAYS to embrace the Midwest winters, but before braving the elements, we endorse using this season to check some boxes on your shopping list and foodie bucket list. Shopping meccas like Jordan Creek Town Center, Historic Valley Junction, and the Historic East Village are perfect for fashionistas and bargain hunters alike, but it’s West End Architectural Salvage (22 9th Street, Des Moines) that is at the top of everyone’s nice list. That’s because this four-story, 50,000-square-foot warehouse, featured on its namesake HGTV show, offers one-of-a-kind pieces that you won’t find online or at big-box retailers. With reclaimed furniture and custom designs, the appetite to remodel is strong with this one. The cooler temperatures also increase the appetite for comfort food, which Des Moines dishes out in huge portions. Warm up with a bowl of noodles at the vibrant Southeast Asian eatery Lucky Lotus (2721 Ingersoll Avenue, Des Moines), an ooey-gooey grilled cheese at the renowned Cheese Bar (2925 Ingersoll Avenue, Des Moines), or a classic s’more roasted over a firepit at The Bartender’s Handshake (3615 Ingersoll Avenue, Des Moines). Whether you’re in the mood for a juicy cheeseburger or a succulent Steak de Burgo, you’ll find a whole world of flavor in Des Moines.

his bustling, youth-friendly city embraces inclusion 365 days a year. The loudest and proudest time is unquestionably the weekend of PrideFest (capitalcitypride.org/pride-fest). In its 45th year, this celebration of community and acceptance falls June 7 – 9. The colorful takeover of the Historic East Village includes food, entertainment, and oodles of camaraderie for thousands of visitors. Events for the entire family include a 5K run/walk, pet parade, kids’ zone, and vendor booths. Don’t miss the weekend’s performances by Drag King DSM (dsmdragking.com), which has been drawing large crowds and even larger talent from all over the U.S. for 13 years. Then cap off your weekend with Sunday’s exuberant Capital City Pride Parade. Capital City Pride, an organization built on a mission of community, education, family, and wellness, makes sure the remainder of the year is also bustling with LGBTQ+ activities. The monthly Speaker Series features a notable member of the community discussing their journey. Also monthly, the Pride Book Club celebrates literature written by and for LGBTQ+ members. Cooking classes, panel discussions, and Broadway sing-alongs are just a few of the other events Capital City Pride has
planned. (To learn more about these and other events, visit capitalcitypride.org/events.) Des Moines’ LGBTQ+ community doesn’t run on organized events alone. The Historic East Village is buzzing with restaurants and bars that exist for, or are friendly to, members of the community. Blazing Saddle (416 E 5th Avenue, Des Moines), known as the “Gay Cheers,” sets the standard with a friendly staff and a diverse calendar of events. Voted 2023 Best Nightclub by Des Moines’ People’s Choice, The Garden Restaurant & Show Lounge (525 E Grand Avenue, Des Moines) is LGBTQ+ owned and operated and features a drag brunch, cabaret, tasty full menu, and must-see rooftop bar. Why not make it a night? Buddy’s Corral, Locust Tap, Bellhop, Up-Down, The BeechWood Lounge, Black Sheep, Ernie’s Boondock, Coa Cantina, and 503 Cocktail Lab + Tasting Room are all just a short walk away. See you in Des Moines!

SHOW OF SUPPORT
GROUP EFFORT
Capital City Pride may be the biggest, but it isn’t the only group working to support LGBTQ+ members here. Other organizations preserving and growing the city’s social consciousness include: Pride Sports League of Central Iowa, Des Moines Pride Center, One Iowa, Iowa Safe Schools, Capital Bears, Lesbians of Iowa, Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus, Imperial Court of Iowa, Prime Timers of Central Iowa, and LGBTQ Iowa Archives & Library.
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT Activities at PrideFest are designed for families and children
of all ages, even babies. Members of Iowa Safe Schools represent atop their parade float. The Capital City Pride Parade travels from the capitol to the Historic East Village along Grand Avenue. Everyone is invited to run, walk, or strut their way through the Pride Stride 5K. When we say everyone, we mean everyone – including the dancing mascot of the Iowa Wolves. A young reveler definitely got the memo: Rainbow it up!

But it’s been in the past 10 years that it has undergone a renaissance of sorts, with an eclectic assortment of new shops, restaurants, and breweries blending seamlessly with older neighbors. The heart of Uptown is the Ankeny Market & Pavilion (AMP), a 3.1acre park that includes two pavilions and bicycle trailheads (including the popular High Trestle Trail). It’s here where you’ll find the Saturday morning Farmers Market, along with Thursday night’s summer series Beats & Eats, teeming with everything from live music and local food trucks to kids’ entertainment, including inflatables, face painting,

and costumed characters. It’s also just a stone’s throw from Firetrucker Brewery, whose patio beckons with the promise of Taco Tuesdays and Tenderloin Thursdays. The tenderloins come from Trailside Tap down the street, which also offers elevated fare like smoked chicken with risotto and chimichurri steak. Wash it all down with one of the 30-plus rotating beers and ciders on tap at Uptown Garage Brewing Company (based in an old Ford showroom), which has the longest bar in the metro. If you didn’t get enough of a lactose fix from one of the hazy IPAs, you can get it next door at the new Uptown Dairy, serving hard-pack Cedar Crest Ice Cream fresh from Wisconsin. LO CAT E D J US T N O RT H of the hustle and bustle of Altoona’s theme parks, shopping, and gambling is the quaint and unassuming Bondurant. Downtown Bondurant has undergone major changes in recent years, with many of the historic buildings being renovated into new businesses. Nowhere are those changes more apparent than on Main Street, where you’ll find a little slice of foodie heaven. Home Slice Handmade Pies opened in 2022 and has already amassed a cult following thanks to Laura Lacina’s innovative and mouthwatering seasonal pies, which include rotating flavors like Dutch Letter, Salted Honey, and Apple Bourbon. Right across the street, Flame the Taqueria, which started as a food truck before opening brick and mortar locations in Johnston and Ankeny, serves some of the best birria tacos that you’ll find. And since you can’t have tacos without beer, don’t leave without getting a Blood Orange Wheat or Lager Ride next door at Reclaimed Rails Brewing Company. Visit Main Street on Wednesdays during the summer and fall and take home some of the flavors during the downtown Bondurant Farmer’s Market, where you can also find local crafts and home decor. Speaking of homes, the impossibly chic and charming Little House On Main is the place to go for curated goods and gifts. You’ll find everything from the perfect seasonal statement piece to a cozy cardigan and jar of artisanal jam. And if your jam is small-town diners, don’t leave town without hitting up Brick Street Café, whose breaded pork tenderloin sandwich might very well be the best one in a state that knows a little something about pork.

The Sky Is the Limit A BEAUTIFUL A DV EN T U RE awaits in picturesque Indianola, host of the colorful National Balloon Classic that starts in late July, and home of the year-round National Balloon Museum, which archives more than 200 years of ballooning. Simpson College adds college-town charm, which can be found in spades at Pete’s Pizza, an institution on the downtown square that slings some of the best and most unique thin-crust pies in the metro. (The Rogalla – pepperoni and cream cheese – is worth the drive alone.) If you fancy a carafe of wine rather than a pitcher of beer, visit Summerset Winery, one of the first estate wineries in Iowa and offering wine tasting, tours, and a patio that is decidedly sweet. A glass of vino seems like the perfect beverage to imbibe before enjoying a performance at the Des Moines Metro Opera. People sing the praises of this hidden gem, which produces more than 100 performances around the region annually, with the highlight being the summer festival season in Indianola, running May – July. Whenever you make your way to Indianola, be sure to save room for dessert and indulge in a sundae at Corner Sundry, an ice cream and soda parlor that’s been serving shakes, handcrafted sodas, and anything else that floats your boat for over 70 years.

From the historic bandstand with American flag bunting in the middle of the square to the 1800s schoolhouse charm of Big Creek Historical Museum, there’s no denying that this is a town square in every sense of the word. Even the Polk City Pub, the popular townie bar, screams Wild West saloon from the outside, although it’s much more Iowa Nice on the inside. And while you can saddle up on a horse a few miles west at Jester Park, a bicycle is the preferred mode of transportation in Polk City. With its nearby proximity to the Neal Smith Trail, Fenders Brewing is a welcome respite for cyclists, who

feel right at home with bikes hanging from the ceiling and posts. The tap list is thoughtfully curated, abiding by the principle of “do few things, but do them well.” Fans of the Breakfasty Brown Ale would argue that few do it better. The only thing missing from the Polk City Americana checklist might be an ice cream truck. But fear not because The Creamery will solve that problem in one fell scoop with a choice of hard-pack ice cream, soft serve, or frozen yogurt. And although it’s not exactly on the square, we’d be remiss not to mention what could lure you to Polk City in the first place: The Tournament Club of Iowa is the only Arnold Palmer-designed golf course in the state, and also one of the most beautiful. So take a drive – it’s worth it!

HISTORIC VALLEY JUNCTION

Peak Shopping Meet-Up W E S T D E S M O IN E S H A S E M E R G E D as the biggest shopping mecca in Iowa, led by the supersized Jordan Creek Town Center, whose footprint is almost large enough to be a city within a city. But venture a few miles east to 5th Street, and you’ll find the decidedly more low key but equally impressive Historic Valley Junction. Founded in the 1890s, this historic railroad district is the unofficial downtown of West Des Moines and home to more than 100 specialty stores, boutiques, vintage shops, and local restaurants, as well as the Thursday Valley Junction Farmers Market whose popularity and scope is rivaled only by its downtown Des Moines sibling. Shopping highlights include Hinge, with affordable, on-trend fashions and stylish home goods; Blind Pig Cocktail Bodega, where you can outfit your home bar with Don Draperapproved glassware, bar tools, and spirits; and MoMere, which features an eclectic mix of kitchen decor, men’s and women’s fashions, and a whole second floor of children’s books, toys, clothing, and more. Valley Junction is also home to some of the most interesting and underrated restaurants in the entire region. Try 5th Street staples like G. Mig’s for elevated pub fare (George’s Prime Rib Burger), Cooper’s on 5th for date night (Lobster & Filet Tips Mac & Cheese), and The Tavern pizza and pasta grill for the whole family (Taco Fiesta pizza). For those craving nostalgia and something sweet, pop into Nan’s Nummies for fudge and cookies made from scratch. If you crave new and exciting, there’s St. Kilda Collective for the trendy breakfast crowd (Fresh Berry Salad) and Bix & Co. for those who like watching sports with fellow fans (The Southsider pizza).

Going the Distance F O R T HE CAS UA L R ID E R , sometimes a bike ride is a fun means to an end. Beer. Ice cream. But for the serious rider, it’s both a mental break and a means to physical health. A chance to connect with nature and unplug from technology. This 42-mile trek offers the chance to escape the confines of the city and discover the diverse topography and traditions that make Greater Des Moines so great. Start off in quaint Bondurant, where you can fuel up with one of the best examples of Iowa’s state sandwich – the breaded pork tenderloin – at Brick Street Café. (There’s even a breakfast tenderloin for early risers.) Take the Chichaqua Valley Trail east, cutting through swaths of forestry and farmland, where you’ll learn to appreciate the beauty of all those Iowa cornfields. Head south through Thomas Mitchell Park, where spring wildflowers remind
you to stop and smell the roses. As you make your way back northwest, you’ll experience one of the best parks in the entire state, Yellow Banks Park. With 140-foot-tall yellow bluffs overlooking the Des Moines River, it’s one of the most enchanting parks in Polk County. It’s also rich in Native American history. Heading north through Pleasant Hill on the Gay Lea Wilson Trail, you’ll wind your way through the popular tourist town of Altoona, where roller coasters and thrill rides dotting the skyline will plant the seed for another type of adventure some other day. As you roll back into Bondurant, end your journey by trading your wheels for wings, with a couple of flights: a refreshing beer flight at Reclaimed Rails Brewing Company and a delicious pie flight across the street at Home Slice Handmade Pies. Recovery has never tasted so sweet.

Bike and Brew T HE RE I S AN U N DE N I AB LE symbiotic relationship between bikes and beer that goes beyond the central conceit that nothing tastes better than a cold brew after a long ride (or a short one, for that matter). Breweries often have bike culture woven into the fabric of their company, and you’ll find no shortage of that sentiment bubbling up on this short, 6.5 mile downtown ride. Start by heading west on Meredith Trail near Mullets, which is the perfect place to fuel up with brunch and a Bloody Mary. As you approach beautiful Gray’s Lake Park, you’ll come across Confluence Brewing Company, a cyclist’s paradise where you can enjoy the aptly named Long Ride Pale Ale in the 350plus capacity beer garden with plenty of bicycle parking. Continue through Water Works Park (almost twice the size of New York City’s Central Park!), where you’ll find one of the area’s true hidden gems, Des Moines Biergarten. Located just east of the Lauridsen Amphitheater, the biergarten allows you to get your Oktoberfest on no matter the month, with steins of German brews, brats, live music, and yard games every Wednesday through Sunday, May through October. Jump back on Kruidenier Trail heading north and bask in the beer nirvana at your disposal: Exile Brewing Company (or Horizon Line Coffee for a different kind of brew); Sherman Hill neighbors Big Grove Brewery and Lua Brewing; and El Bait Shop, with the largest craft beer selection west of the Mississippi and hearty home cooking to soak it all up. Pints and Patios BE E R H O UN D S YA P about the light lagers at Kinship Brewing Company (255 NW Sunrise Drive, Waukee), but it’s all the dog-friendly amenities that your hound will be howling about. A brewery with a side of dog park is what you’ll find at “Iowa’s lager brewery,” where standout brews include the Amber Lager and ginger-tinged Summer Lager. Hang out on the patio and nosh on some Milton Creamery fried cheese while your dog enjoys a snack as well. After you’re both hydrated, head to the attached Kinship Lois Park. The fenced half-acre off-leash dog park makes for a perfect Sunday Funday (or any day) for both you and your pup. There are oodles of other dog-friendly patios throughout Greater Des Moines, and 515 Brewing Company (7700 University Avenue, Clive) is one of our favorites. Located right off the most popular trail in the burbs, the Clive Greenbelt, it’s the perfect spot to end up after a long walk – a pale ale in one hand, and the other hand giving your pooch the rub behind the ears that they’ve been eagerly awaiting all day.

Paws & Pints
Eat and Play W E DON’T K NOW F O R S U RE what doggie heaven looks like, but we imagine that Paws & Pints (6218 Willowmere Drive, Des Moines) is a pretty good guess. It consists of five areas, including Your Best Friend’s Bar, which includes 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor dog park space (doggy jungle gym, anyone?), along with a restaurant, bar, coffeehouse, TVs, and live music for the two-legged set. There’s also a dog spa with daycare and grooming, and a “bonetique” – a onestop-shop with everything from food and treats to toys and swag. It’s Doggie Disneyland, and we’re here for it. If your pooch is more of a suburbanite, check out Smash Park (6625 Coachlight Drive, West Des Moines), where dogs can find their happy place on Iowa’s ultimate patio while you try your hand at pickleball, shuffleboard, cornhole, or bocce ball, fueled by the Sheet Ton of Nachos and a bucket of beers. Bone appétit!

May we suggest the Surety Hotel (206 6th Avenue, Des Moines), which is not only one of the chicest hotels in town, but also one of the most dog-friendly, offering dog treats, toys, and dog beds, big and small. After you’re checked in, you’ll want to check out what’s happening, and for that, head west to Historic Valley Junction. On Thursday evenings, it hosts its popular Valley Junction Farmers Market. Your dog will feel right at home with other furry friends as you’re shopping and enjoying food from local vendors – get them a doggo fruit smoothie to lap up and cool off as you explore. The cool thing about the market here is that you can also peruse all the shops lining 5th Street, including the Midwest-centric Bozz Prints (215 5th Street, West Des Moines), where you can pick up a “Dog Moines” T-shirt, sticker, or can cooler.
