All Shook Up Staff and students are gearing up for their bi-annual show All Shook Up which will be performed at the Civic Theatre on 22-23 April. After almost six months of rehearsals, the cast of 43 students,13 musicians and the support crew are looking forward to rocking the audience with familiar Elvis songs, 80+ costumes and a great story which explores the fickleness of love triangles and the importance of following your dream and being true to yourself. This crowd-pleasing musical will have you jumpin’ out of your blue suede shoes with such classics as Heartbreak Hotel, Jailhouse Rock and Don’t Be Cruel. To support our students, and to simply have a rocking, entertaining night, search ‘All Shook Up’ on the Townsville TicketShop site. School news 2022 Despite a delayed start to the school year, students were pleased to get back into their classrooms on 7 February and get straight into the busy curricular and cocurricular life of the school. The year has seen a record enrolment figure of 1085 students, with 134 boarders. Most of the growth has occurred in the Junior School, with some year levels at full capacity. Students in the Middle and Senior School are operating around a major building site which, when completed, will provide a new state-of-the-art library, three refurbished classrooms (including one STEM space) and the old library refurbished into a new staffroom. School Reunion Get your friends together for the annual school reunion weekend on 22-23 July. Foundation Day will be celebrated by the school community on Friday with a school service and the highly anticipated Lagoon Dash, followed by the Sundowner by the Lagoon – a great opportunity for past students and current school families to relax and mingle with drinks and finger food. On Saturday we will host a school tour and the traditional Reunion Dinner, and the Touch Football and Netball Challenge will be on Sunday afternoon. We look forward to welcoming you to this year’s reunion weekend, hopefully without Covid disruptions to planned events. I attended The Cathedral School from 1996-2008 and now I’m a journalist for 7NEWS Brisbane reporting on court, crime and general news. The best part about my profession is meeting people. Everyone has an interesting story - no matter how big or small - and it’s a privilege to be able to tell them. I also love that I’ve been able to travel around Australia and live in different communities over the past nine years. My favourite memory of school is school camps - even in Grade 9 when we got lost orienteering and got rained on at the campsite that night. They were often tough but always a fun experience. The most useful thing that I learnt at Cathedral was confidence. It’s been invaluable in my career as a journalist. My advice to current students is ‘Don’t fret if you don’t know what you want to do when you leave school, but importantly, push yourself out of your comfort zone and try new things. The times I’ve taken a risk by moving to a new city or trying a new job were either experiences I’ve loved or taught me something about myself.’

ROCHELLE LAKE – CLASS OF 1998

CLASS OF 2021

I went to Cathedral from Year 1 to 12 (a lifer) and finished in 1988. Now I work as Head of Business-to-Business Marketing in Australasia for Essity, a global hygiene and health company. Essity is a leader in innovation and sustainability that is focused on improving well-being, so I get to work on lots of exciting projects. I’ve been working in marketing for over 20 years and love it. There is a lot of variety and constant change in the work, which appeals to me. My work has also enabled me to travel the world. When I was at school, I loved the school grounds with the lagoon and beautiful big shade trees, and we had a great mix of students from different locations and backgrounds. I’ve lived in lots of places and I can talk to anyone easily; I think a lot of this comes from growing up in Townsville and going to Cathedral. My current activities include coaching my daughter’s netball team and training for a 6-day hike on Fraser Island. I’ll be doing the hike with a couple of friends including Cathy McLennan, one of my school buddies. FROM THE ARCHIVES

School productions have been a highlight of the school year since the very earliest days. One hundred years ago, St Anne’s School performed A Midsummer Night’s Dream on the outdoor stage at the school’s city campus (picture from1922 below). The Garden Stage was established by Sister Alice, the first Sister-inCharge. The audience sat on the lower tennis court and the players acted around a palm tree with a magnificent tropical garden backdrop. More than 20 plays were performed on this stage, many of them Shakespearean plays directed by Sister Vernon. After the move to Mundingburra, a garden stage was built in front of the lagoon, and this was the site for performances from the late 1960’s. This year, the audience can sit in comfort in the Civic Theatre and watch the current generation of Cathedral students continue the fine tradition of school productions.
