Hope for a Brighter Tomorrow Like the parable of the loaves and fishes, our annual celebration multiplies the gifts of a few to care for the many. We recognize the power of extraordinary charity to provide justice and change lives every day. Proceeds from this event go directly toward providing services that improve the quality of life for individuals and families in San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo counties.
Together, we accomplish the remarkable.

Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to our 24th Annual Loaves & Fishes Awards Celebration. Tonight is an evening of hope and inspiration in support of Catholic Charities and our most vulnerable community members in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin Counties. Over the past thirteen months, Catholic Charities has responded with real solutions to the challenges of the pandemic, which include increases in individuals and families experiencing homelessness and hunger, many for the very first time, and remote learning inequities, to name a few. As we have continued our foundational work to ensure opportunity, justice, and equity for all, we have seen the needs of our community rise exponentially due to COVID-19. Our frontline workers have served over 60,000 individuals — more than double the number of people we annually assist — with dedication, determination, and strength. Tonight, our virtual event demonstrates our ability to pivot and meet challenges with creativity and resolve. We have reimagined our Annual Loaves & Fishes event to bring together our wonderful community of supporters — friends, colleagues, volunteers, partners, clients, and sponsors — in celebration, in the comfort of our own homes! This year we honor the significant leadership and longstanding devotion to our community of Stephen Revetria, President, Giants Enterprises with our “Faith in Action Award” and Reverend Paul J. Fitzgerald, President, University of San Francisco, with our “Heart of the Community Award.”

They and the legendary organizations they represent epitomize the energy, vibrancy, and unique character of San Francisco and the entire Bay Area. We are proud to honor Stephen and Father Paul who each bring his talent, expertise, and love to the work they do and to our community. Thank you for your tremendous support and partnership. Together, we provide Hope for a Brighter Tomorrow. Blessings,
Jilma L. Meneses CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Reverend Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J. PRESIDENT, UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO Ask any University of San Francisco (USF) student and they will tell you Father Paul Fitzgerald, S.J. is the heart and soul of the USF community. His enthusiastic commitment to educating global citizens in the spirit of the university’s motto to “change the world from here,” inspires the USF and greater community in so many ways. Fr. Paul fosters an environment that encourages respect, curiosity, and awe. A passionate advocate for diversity, peace, and justice, he stewards USF’s global university where 75 percent of the 10,000-member student body are people of color hailing from nations around the world. As the 28th President of USF for the past seven years, Fr. Paul challenges students to extend their education beyond the walls of the university into the heart of the City by volunteering with nonprofits. These important nonprofits, like Catholic Charities, include serving individuals experiencing homelessness in the Tenderloin, tutoring youth in the Western Addition, and bringing meals to vulnerable and isolated seniors. Fr. Paul embodies servant leadership. Early in the HIV/AIDS crisis and during his seminary studies, Fr. Paul worked with Catholic Charities Peter Claver Community providing well-being, emotional, and hospice support to residents with HIV/AIDS. These early experiences inform his work at USF where he inspires students and the larger community to understand their own potential to be change agents by building relationships with people in the community who are vulnerable. Fr. Paul earned a B.A. in History from Santa Clara University in 1980. Two years later, he entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), earning a Master of Divinity and a Pontifical Licentiate in Ecclesiology at Weston School of Theology. 1n 1992, he was ordained to the Roman Catholic Priesthood. He attended the University of Paris IV — La Sorbonne, where he earned a D.E.A. (diplôme des études approfondies) and a Docteur ès Lettres (Ph.D.) in the Sociology of Religion. He concurrently completed a Pontifical Doctorate (S.T.D.) in Ecclesiology from the Institut Catholique de Paris. Before his current tenure as President of USF, Fr. Paul was Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Fairfield University in Connecticut. He also served as Senior Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Santa Clara University.

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY The students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the University San Francisco extend warm congratulations to our president, Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J., on receiving the Heart of the Community Award from Catholic Charities of San Francisco. We are deeply grateful for all you do at USF and alongside our community partners in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam. — St. Ignatius Loyola

Michael Pritchard Michael Pritchard began his career on both the comedy stage and as a juvenile counselor in San Francisco’s Youth Guidance Center. In 1980, Michael won first place in the San Francisco International Stand Up Comedy Competition as well as winning the prestigious California Probation Officer of the Year. Michael’s Hollywood guest appearances include an Emmy Award winning episode of “Taxi,” standup comedy shared billings with Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, Diana Ross, the Grateful Dead, Kenny Rogers, Mike Mc Donald, and Boz Scaggs. T. Braswell Tyanna (“T.”) Braswell is a spoken word poet born and raised in the Bay Area who began writing poetry at the age of 11. Since then, T. has toured and performed all around California alongside many talented and well-known poets on tours such as “A Few Good Men.” She has also been featured in various music festivals and at colleges and universities. Daniel Rodriguez Daniel Rodriguez, the Brooklyn born, now-retired police officer, helped bring the country an uplifting spirit of promise and hope with his stirring rendition of “God Bless America” after the 2001 World Trade Center terrorist attack. Daniel’s formal voice training began early, with his first recital in Carnegie Hall at age 16. Singing has been his lifelong passion, however it didn’t always pay the bills. He worked at a series of jobs until joining the NYPD at age 30, where he became known as “The Singing Policeman.” On September 11, 2001, Officer Rodriguez was driving to work when the first plane hit the World Trade Center. Arriving at the site as a first-responder, he witnessed the destruction of both towers, nearly losing his own life. At “Prayer for America” in Yankee Stadium his inspirational voice gave hope and strength to a grieving nation. His music career had turned into a calling. Daniel’s philanthropic and patriotic efforts have been recognized with numerous honors, such as the USO Lifetime Achievement Award, the DAR Medal of Patriotism, and others. Now known as “America’s Beloved Tenor,” he continues to uplift and inspire in performances for his chosen charities, at high profile events, and concert halls around the world.
Tammy Nelson Tammy Nelson was raised in San Jose. She had been performing in melodramas and musicals at Campbell’s Gaslighter Theater, San Jose’s Big Lil’s Cabaret, and Los Gatos’ West Valley Light Opera when her sister encouraged her to audition for “Beach Blanket Babylon,” partly because of Nelson’s “comfort with an audience,” partly because of her “big voice.” 2018 marked Tammy’s 25th anniversary with the long-running musical revue, “Beach Blanket Babylon,” as well as being a final cast performer. Tammy played numerous roles in the recently closed turbo-charged show, from Adele to Paula Deen, from “Jewish Mother” to Queen Elizabeth II, not to mention wearing the famous San Francisco skyline hat during the show’s finale. Nelson says it can be harder to unlearn an old routine than it is to learn a new one. During her first 16 years with the company, Tammy understudied for Val Diamond, assuming the lead when Diamond left the company in 2009.

Ann Anderson For 30 blessed years, Ann Anderson has found home and community at Catholic Charities St. Vincent’s Schools for Boys. She has also created important foundations for hundreds of boys. Ann began as a Program Supervisor following college and, with her dedication and focus on the boys’ wellbeing, rose to Program Director of Residential Services. She is a vital part of a team that encourages healing and transformation in traumatized boys. “The boys come to us mad, sad, scared, and not trusting anyone or much of anything. They have life experiences no one could believe,” she explains. “Surrounded by the amazing people who work at St. Vincent’s, the boys learn to trust, grow, and be kids again, finally letting go of the hurt.” That success comes down to the atmosphere of love, family, and friendship that Ann and the staff create. Ann shares, “Kids being kids and goofing around, staff and kids working together to get the day started, and the boys truly feeling safe, and cared about. This is why I feel blessed to work in such an amazing place and be a part of Catholic Charities.”
Patty Clement Patty Clement has been a dynamic force and leader at Catholic Charities for more than three decades. A renowned expert in gerontology, a field she has been devoted to for 32 years, Patty is Director of Client Services for Aging and Children. In addition to her long-term work with seniors, Patty recently expanded her portfolio to supervise three youth programs. Patty is skilled at starting new Catholic Charities programs and redesigning existing ones. Known for her collaborative skills, and fundraising prowess, she partners with many community and government groups. She is dedicated to delivering meaningful programs and care with maximum benefits that help seniors lead more active, independent lives. During the pandemic, while aging and youth programs closed across our community, Patty successfully pivoted to keep her programs running with an expanded food pantry, hot meal pickup, meal delivery, toiletry essential handouts, online cooking classes, telephone check-ins, and on-line enrichments to keep memory care clients engaged. Patty’s staff believes she moves mountains. Her 30+ year history with Catholic Charities powerfully backs that up.

Scheron Douglas A leader and tireless advocate for the youth she has served for 30 years at Catholic Charities, Scheron Douglas is Program Director of San Francisco Boys’ & Girls’ Homes. Having begun as a counselor, she now heads up the program with determination and expertise. Scheron has forged robust relationships with public defenders, judges, community-based programs, and social services agencies that have been key to making this program for adjudicated youth so successful. An exceptional leader, Scheron builds authentic relationships by always being available to therapists, parents, specialists, and her team. The delicious Thanksgiving dinners she cooks for staff and the youth also help. Scheron’s mother led by example, taking in foster children and teaching her daughter to value caring for others. Scheron continues this legacy today, helping teens find their own best selves and a better future. The reward of her work is hearing from adults who have gone on to lead successful lives. “I love to see them succeed and do well for their families. It’s hard to teach success and hard to not follow the crowd for black and brown children,” she says.
Colleen McCarthy Through a wealth of roles and increasing responsibilities, Colleen McCarthy has touched nearly all our Catholic Charities programs in her 31 years at the agency. She has been both on the ground, providing direct services to clients, as well as an integral part of our administrative team. As Director of Contracts and Grants, Colleen oversees Catholic Charities’ many contracts and grants with acuity and discernment. She helps ensure the seamless and continued funding of our 30+ programs with foundation, government, community, and internal partners. Colleen began her career at Catholic Charities CYO Camp where she enjoyed the melting pot of the staff and children which, to her, felt like family and inspired her lifelong devotion to servant leadership at Catholic Charities. On a very special note, Colleen met her husband, Kevin McCarthy, who is also a Catholic Charities Milestone Employee, at CYO Camp. Many of their Catholic Charities colleagues attended their wedding and some are godparents to their two children.

Kevin McCarthy A Catholic Charities CYO Transportation Bus Driver, Kevin McCarthy has had an impact on thousands of children during his more than 30 years at Catholic Charities. He is beloved by the children for his warmth and kindness as he safely drives them around our community. Pre-pandemic, Kevin greeted students by name, memorizing the sea of students’ names in a matter of weeks. Many of his former riders have come back to thank him for making them feel welcomed and seen. His friendliness and knowledge of the city make him one of the most requested bus drivers for field trips. Kevin began working at Catholic Charities in 1983 as a camp counselor, where he met his wife, fellow Catholic Charities Milestone Employee, Colleen McCarthy. Kevin has worked in many roles including dispatcher, route coordinator, and staff and payroll coordinator. Kevin’s cheerful approach to life has been especially helpful during the pandemic as he pivoted to transporting homeless people and delivering food to shelters. Now working with students again, Kevin takes each student’s temperature and gives each hand sanitizer. While it is harder to recognize his passengers with their face masks, he is happy to be back doing what he loves — driving the kids.

Elizabeth Sparks Liz Sparks has enjoyed coming to work at Catholic Charities CYO Transportation every day for 30 years. She considers it her home away from home. Liz surrounds herself with photographs of friends and family in her office and tiny school buses are parked on her bookshelf — visual reminders of a running joke she shares with her colleagues. Since Liz is the only one on the CYO Transportation Team who does not drive a school bus, her co-workers jest that she needs reminders of what a bus looks like! Having started as the office coordinator, Liz has proven herself an invaluable member of the CYO Transportation team. Now the Office Manager, she keeps things humming. She calls herself ‘Point A’ — handling all the calls from the schools, booking the buses, scheduling the drivers, and sending out the invoices. Liz jokingly loves to remind her supervisor, Marty Rea, Director of CYO Transportation, “The best thing you ever did was hire me!”
Raymond Tracy For 30 years, Raymond Tracy has worked at what many would find a challenging job. As a group counselor at Catholic Charities SF Boys’ Home, he helps adjudicated young men cope with their experiences, remain out of the criminal justice system, and integrate into their communities. The young men come into the program at a vulnerable time and Raymond knows he and the team can have a big impact on each of them. He compares his counseling work to gardening where you plant a seed and hope it will thrive and grow. “I do the best that I can, and hope for the best.” Raymond has worked side-by-side with Scheron Douglas, another of this year’s Milestone Employee honorees. She considers Raymond her right hand saying, “Raymond has shown tremendous leadership and given so much support to the youth through his coaching.” Raymond wears many hats in addition to his work with youth. He takes great pride in keeping the home clean and inviting — ready to welcome new visitors at any moment.
