Exeter has it all and we urge you to come t ry.

Welcome W

hen I moved to Exeter I hadn’t quite anticipated how thriving the foodie scene would be here. Since then, in the name of research and with a love of good food, I’ve been working my way around our restaurants, artisan coffee shops and gastropubs. I still have a way to go but I love discovering new gems that I add to my growing list of places to take friends, great venues for family and

kids that serve amazing coffee and cake or a cosy dinner. With new eateries popping up in our city, favourites launching seasonal plates and expanding their menus and new food trends coming to Exeter, we wanted to pull together the ultimate guide for Exeter’s food fans (I think that includes most of us). Whether it’s a juicy meltingly good burger, a slice of mouth-watering pizza, or a

perfect brunch plate, Exeter has it all and we urge you to come try. So here it is, your definitive guide to Exeter’s restaurants, cafés and gastro bars and pubs. Have a flick through next time you’re wondering where to eat in the city or where to take friends to show off quite how fabulous our foodie scene is. We hope you enjoy devouring it. World Flavours Exeter’s got a pretty impressive world food scene. From noodles and sushi to pizza and pasta, there’s a seriously tasty choice of independents, quality chains and pubs serving the best of gastro-food. The Asian food scene is buzzing in the city right now with impressive independents like Jasmine Thai (South Street), the wonderfully inventive Steaks n Sushi on North Street and Tyepyedong (Sidwell Street), happily rubbing shoulders with bustling chains like Wagamama and Yo Sushi. Quality curry is easy to come by in the city with independent curry houses serving up exceptional flavours. Moroccan restaurant Al Farid on Cathedral Green is an Exeter favourite for authentic food in traditional and warm interiors. For Turkish food, Pasha on South Street is worth a visit, plus the recently opened Ottoman Grill around the corner on Guinea Street. Lebanese restaurant, Comptoir Libanais has been introducing Exeter to wholesome colourful Lebanese food in a souk-like setting since is opening in 2016 in the Guildhall’s Queen Street Dining. Fancy Italian? Go indie and enjoy one of the sensational pizzas at The Flat, a vegan pizza restaurant on Fore Street, leading the march on the best of Vegan. Think stripped back brick interiors and relaxed lighting – there aren’t many tables and it’s incredibly popular from Wednesday to Sunday so we advise booking. Perfect for a bite before the cinema (The Picturehouse is just behind it). Quality chains like Carluccios, Zizzi and ASK have found picturesque homes in the city with outdoor seating (ask for a Cathedral view table at ASK). For French food try Cote on Cathedral Green (another place where asking for a window table is worth doing). For Mexican, head to Las Iguanas and for chicken, Portugese-style, head to Nandos in Princesshay or the HenHouse on North Street . If we’re stretching the world food description to include burgers then Exeter does burgers well (and also medium-rare…). We were one of the first places outside St Ives to get a Hubbox – this amazing place on Sidwell Street cooks up mouth watering juicy burgers from inside a shipping container and is often touted as being one of the best places for burgers in the city. Byron Burger arrived in Exeter along with GBK (Gourmet Burger Kitchen) a few years back bringing a national reputation and great food. Five Guys on Queen Street joined the Exeter burger scene last year and is also worth a visit.

Coffee Culture Exeter thankfully hasn’t escaped the trend for beautifully made and well sourced artisan coffee and the city has seen the springing up of gorgeous, quirky coffee shops all over the place. There’s always somewhere impressive to arrange a rendezvous - think March on South Street with its heavenly homemade doughnuts (think fresh light sugary matcha and white chocolate filled doughnuts) that fill all of your foodie needs. Kupp is the perfect place if you’re thinking of going scandi and cool or The Glorious on Fore Street has a more colourful arty vibe. Try Queen Street’s Devon Coffee for even more locally-roasted goodness. If it’s time for a traditional British cuppa then there’s not better place to head than Tea on the Green, set on Cathedral Green itself, this place doesn’t let the stunning views get in the way of quality food and drink. We also love The Plant café on Cathedral Green both for a coffee or a light and virtuous lunch. If it’s a cheat day (or even if it’s not) then the raspberry and beetroot cake is essential. Part of a small but perfectly formed chain, Boston Tea Party has long been part of Exeter’s coffee culture scene. Guest coffees and the most incredible cakes keep this place buzzing. The beautifully cavernous upstairs space transports you away from the bustling streets for a quiet break. Further down Queen street, next to Central Station, you’ll find The Exploding Bakery. Serving ridiculously good coffee and impressive bakes it has no WiFi so is the perfect place to escape and switch off. Caffe Espresso tucked away on Castle Street is worth a mini detour from the High Street. It happens to have amazing coffee, cakes and food but is also a perfectly off-the-beaten track place to impress visiting friends with. Artigiano on the High Street is a convenient but stylish pit stop for a break from shopping. By day this place does great coffee and by night transforms seamlessly into an evening wine bar. Tucked away in the slick architecture of Princesshay, Chandos Deli looks out onto the ancient city wall ruins and serves up artisan coffee, homemade cakes and deli lunches. Head a few doors down for Coffee #1, another small chain that knows what they are doing when it comes to coffee.

Thai Orchid Restaurant

5 Cathedral Yard, Exeter EX1 1HJ Established in 1995, Thai Orchid Restaurant was Exeter’s first Thai restaurant introducing the city to the finest Thai cuisine in a quirky period cottage on the edge of Cathedral Green. Built in 1540 this stonemasons’ cottage provides an unlikely yet fitting backdrop for this taste of Thailand. The family-run restaurant serves authentic food prepared by Thai chefs with experience gained in prestigious restaurants and hotels from Bangkok to New Zealand. Thai Orchid caters for all occasions, from a romantic rendezvous for two to business dinners, private parties and families.

What diners are saying:

The Conservatory

18 North Street, Exeter EX4 3QR Long recognised as one of Exeter’s favourite restaurants, The Conservatory on North Street serves up sophisticated interiors (think, light and airy with a refined style) and a beautiful menu. The modern European menu features French and Mediterranean influences plus traditional style English dishes, blending hearty comfort food with light, imaginative gourmet dishes all made using high quality ingredients, often from the surrounding countryside. Overwhelmingly good reviews help explain why this restaurant has stood the test of time in the city and remains hugely popular.

What diners are saying:

The Fat Pig

John Street, Exeter EX1 1BL The Fat Pig is pretty hidden away but you’d never know given its popularity and thoroughly-deserved reputation in the city. With a loyal and growing customer base, the Fat Pig remains one of Exeter’s favourite pubs for artisan food and drink. The team’s ethos centres on locally sourced, meat, fish, game, drinks and produce. They also run an experimental brewery to produce beers and spirits just for the pub and its sister bar, Tabac, so you'll always find great beer on tap. Sundays are all about the classic roast dinner at the Fat Pig. Unsurprisingly, booking is recommended.

What the people say.. Helen

Philippa

Amy

Helen Scholes is marketing manager at Stagecoach SW and a board director of InExeter.

Philippa Rutherford is owner and manager of the jewellery boutique Mantis on Gandy Street and board director of InExeter.

Amy lives and works in the city.

For morning coffee, I’ve recently been enjoying The Glorious Arthouse on Fore Street. Great coffee in a colourful, quirky environment. The massive salads on offer at the Plant Café Deli are hard to beat for a healthy and tasty lunch. And after the salad, for a decadent sweet treat, the cakes in Boston Tea Party are great – I am powerless to resist their rocky road.

Breakfast has to be Lloyds Kitchen in Catherine Street. They do the best eggs benedict and have lovely freshly baked croissants. I love a flat white from Devon Coffee on Queen Street. They make the best coffee and it is lovely and cosy inside with great décor.

For an evening out my friends and I tuck into Chateaubriand at Circa 1924, followed by Artigiano for wine and then onto the Firehouse for a bit of live music. A lunch in the city usually involve Typedong – I love Asian food and this little indie restaurant on Sidwell Street is fantastic. For all fresco dining you can’t beat tapas and wine in Forn’s garden.

Lunch at Herbies on North Street is great. It’s been a long-time favourite of mine and I often go there with my daughter who is vegetarian. That said, the best kept foodie secret in Exeter is the Cavern’s Vegetarian Café.

Mark and Gary Mark, a counsellor, and his husband Gary, a customer service representative live in St James with their 13-year-old Jack Russell, Tizzy. For a special occasion we head to Cote Brasserie. We love the food, the layout and the ambience. Fine food, fizz and a table with a view of Exeter Cathedral – what’s not to like? For lunch we like KuPP. Of all the new restaurants in the Queen Street Dining development, it is the one we have visited most. You are guaranteed to find something different to try on the menu – there is nothing else quite like it. On a sunny day, we take an outside table at Café Rouge. The menu is great, what’s better than tucking into Steak and Frites, and people watching in the heart of Princesshay piazza? Tizzy loves it too!

What the people say.. John and Jenny

Russ and Viv

Mattie

John and Jenny are farmers from Cornwall, often visiting Exeter to catch up with friends and family.

Russ, an operations supervisor from Exeter and his mum Viv, from Torquay.

For a night out in Exeter we enjoy pre-dinner drinks in Crocketts on Upper Paul Street. The décor is great with lots of quirky details and the range of gins and accompaniments is fantastic.

We enjoy Exeter’s Sunday lunch offering, debating between South Street Standard and Oddfellows as our favourite venues. The quality of the food at both is fantastic – locally sourced, generous portions and nicely presented.

Mattie Richardson is the founder of Bunyip Craft and an InExeter board director. She lives with her young family in the city.

A curry at the Ganges is a must – the specials are really different and the fish menu is excellent – I particularly like the mango and fish dish they do.

For tea and cake we make a beeline for the Exploding Bakery – the cakes are so good and the location is perfect, right next to Central Station. In the evening, we head to the Fat Pig: it has a brilliant range of drinks including their own gin, great smokehouse food and fab staff.

The best treat we can give the kids is a visit to Brody's Breakfast Bar on Queen Street, they love the range of breakfast foods, and the pancake machines are pretty epic! In the evening the kids like Yo Sushi. We took them for the first time about a year ago and now they want to go all the time. My husband and I would say any meal that we get to eat out is a special occasion, but the real dream is @Angela's on New Bridge Street, we've been once and the food was beautiful.

Sharon and Will Sharon, a PR consultant, and her husband Will, a filmmaker, live in Exeter with their young family and their cat, James. For coffee it’s got to be The Exploding Bakery. These guys really know how to do coffee and the cake is incredible. We love Tabac on the rare occasions we get out as a couple for a pre-dinner drink. The beers are fab and it feels like a real escape. For a family lunch we often go to Ask. It has a really lovely feel being in such a beautiful building on Cathedral Green. Plus they give out crayons and stickers to keep the kids entertained. On some occasions this has allowed us to finish the odd sentence to each other.

Self-described as ‘planetfriendly indulgence, done simply’, the Flat pride themselves on creating the best quality food for their customers. Our favourites? The Salty pizza (sun dried tomatoes, capers, artichokes, chilli and parmesan) and to finish, the sorbetto, a mix of lemon sorbet, gin, prosecco and almond milk blended together to make a smooth after dinner treat. Absolutely delicious.
