up in an Arab and Berber culture. “Eating food offers a chance to be with friends and family, to talk and laugh and celebrate and share the latest news.” That is why he and the team are proud to encourage sharing style food at Comptoir, such as their new feasting set menu which showcases all of their favourites, from Baba Ghanuj and Beetroot labneh to an eight hour cooked Aubergine Tagine and generously portioned Mixed Grill.
Comptoir Libanais Guildhall Shopping and Dining Queen Street, Exeter EX4 3HP Comptoir Libanais is a place where everyone can enjoy real Lebanese and Middle Eastern home-cooking in humble and friendly surroundings. To create such a place has been the dream of founder, Tony Kitous, since he first came to London almost 20 years ago. He knew from those early days that he had found his new home and his purpose in life. It started with owning his first restaurant but soon blossomed into a mission to one day make Middle Eastern food as popular as Italian food. Comptoir Libanais is well on its way in this regard as there are currently 22 restaurants across London and around the country, including Manchester, Bath, Leeds, Reading, Birmingham, Oxford and Exeter as well as other branches opening nationwide over the coming months. Comptoir is also in Holland with further international expansion planned for Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Wherever Comptoir Libanais goes however, the ethos remains, for as Tony always says, “Food brings people together, much closer than anything else.” This stems from how much food was a part of his upbringing and how much it is a part of the lives of everyone brought
Apart from encouraging a feasting style at the table, Comptoir also ensures that the food they serve can be enjoyed by everyone, which is why 30% of the menu is now vegan and over 55% of the menu is vegetarian. The inclusivity of Comptoir extends to their Children’s menu. Alongside an activity pack and colouring in section, the extensive and versatile menu is priced at £5.95 and includes a main course, drink and dessert. From the drinks menu, freshly squeezed juices are popular with all, while the unique range of Lebanese wines is always an enjoyable talking point amongst the adults. Comptoir Libanais is known for providing food that is fresh, healthy, honest and affordable, for any day of the week and any occasion. Their colourful salads and freshly rolled warm wraps are popular as takeaway lunches for office workers, but where the restaurant truly celebrates its roots and culture is through its spread of fresh, vibrant salads and vegetables, grilled and slow-cooked meats, steamed couscous, pickles, dips, olives and of course their desserts, baklava and tea. As Tony always says, “You will never leave an Arabic table hungry!”. Founded in 2008, the name Comptoir Libanais means Lebanese Counter, as it is a place where everyone can eat casually and enjoy authentic Middle Eastern food, served with warm and friendly hospitality, just like back home. Comptoir Libanais has recently released their latest cookbook, Feasts from the Middle East, which shares recipes from Tony’s childhood, handed down to him by his mother, the source of all his inspiration.

Red Panda Deli
29 Gandy Street, Exeter EX4 3LS A deep-rooted passion for Asian street food, gained whilst living in South east Asia for 20 years, inspired husband and wife duo, James and Natalie to bring their mutual love of the area’s cuisine to the UK. Following on from Natalie’s initial success in Lyme Regis, fortune fell on Exeter to be chosen by James for his shop, much to the delight of shoppers, visitors and a growing band of city centre workers for whom Red Panda is their preferred choice for a takeout lunch. Red Panda’s signature dish is beautiful in its simplicity and delicious in taste. The bao bun, is an Asian delicacy of steamed, cloud-like, bread enfolding marinated slices of tofu or meat and other condiments. The basis of the cooking method is that it is all vegan and plant based - and, if desired, delicious meats such as pork or chicken are added at the end, so the dish is hugely popular with carnivores and vegans alike. At Red Panda important food choices are celebrated and never compromised. The array of colourful ingredients on display are freshly prepared each day, allowing each bun to be made before your eyes. Although the entire menu is Asian inspired, Red Panda’s ethos and mission is to have zero waste and minimum food miles, but while still retaining the unique and authentic flavours found in Asian street markets. Instead of importing an ingredient from afar, a carefully chosen, locally grown alternative is sourced to reduce the environmental impact of long-haul food importation. Just enough fresh ingredients are prepared daily and when they are gone, the kitchen is simply closed until the next day, again illustrating Red Panda’s commitment to zero waste.
Open at lunchtimes from Monday to Saturday Red Panda is a haven of food with thought allowing a small part of Asia to flourish here in Exeter.

Thai Orchid
Tyepyedong
5 Cathedral Yard, Exeter EX1 1HJ
175 Sidwell Street, Exeter EX4 6RH
It is not every city that can boast having a longstanding restaurant that has been serving the finest Thai cuisine from a stonemason’s cottage dating back to the 1500s, but Exeter can, as Thai Orchid Restaurant has been a part of the city’s varied dining offer in Cathedral Yard since 1995.
Pronounced ‘tye-pye-dong’, this independent, family-run restaurant offers Exeter’s diners an oriental fusion of Japanese and Chinese food with other Asian influences.
The restaurant is a family run business offering informal fine dining prepared by Thai chefs with experience gained in prestigious restaurants and hotels from Bangkok to New Zealand. Thai Orchid embraces the full array of flavours and spices in Thai cuisine whilst respecting the delicacy of the individual ingredients ensuring that their fragrance and subtlety comes through with every bite. Thai Orchid caters for all occasions; the romantic rendezvous for two to the business dinner, private parties, takeaway and of course little ones are always welcome. Lunchtime menus, nine set menus, a full A’ La Carte menu and a takeaway menu are all available.
Tyepyedong’s noodles are cooked in three different ways; they can be served in broth as soups, stir-fried in a wok or boiled and served like spaghetti with the ingredients stir-fried in sauce and carefully layered on-top. The soups are cooked the authentic Chinese way so it is worth remembering that it may not be quite what you expect! Not limited to just noodles, Tyepyedong also serve a variety of rice dishes to suit all tastes. Great care is taken to ensure guests receive their chosen dish exactly as they prefer. That is why the chefs are more than happy to modify a dish to make it just how you like it, whether that’s with no prawns or maybe extra spicy. Cooked fresh to order, Tyepyedong’s meals contain no artificial flavours or colourings to ensure your food is of the highest quality. The restaurant is fully licensed, with a selection of beers, wines and sake available. If you are looking for an authentic alcohol-free, Chinese drink, then the green tea is recommended. Takeaway orders benefit from a discounted price and can be collected in person or brought straight to your door by Deliveroo.

16 Bedford Street, Exeter EX1 1LL
Yo! Sushi is a Tokyo inspired conveyor belt restaurant serving over 100 delicious Japanese classic street food and sushi dishes.
Inspired by fast-paced, Japanese ramen bars and a celebration of Asian food, Wagamama burst into life in London in 1992. Their unique way of eating, bringing the fresh, nourishing flavours of Asia proved a huge success and continues to be so to this day.
Choose from Nigiri, a hand-formed ball of rice, with a slice of salmon or tuna over the top; maki, layers of fish, veggies and rice wrapped in seaweed; Sushi, rice served with vegetables and fish; and sashimi, fresh cuts of salmon or tuna, with wakame seaweed and lemon; dragon rolls or ‘inside-out’ sushi rolls where nori seaweed is wrapped around ingredients inside and the sushi rice is in the outside; temaki hand rolls, sushi rice, fish or veggies on a sheet of seaweed and rolled into a bouquet by hand.
Since its beginnings, Wagamama has sharpened its skills and refined its recipes, playing with spices and discovering tastes. The Asian inspired menu diners enjoy so much today has been created to soothe, nourish, sustain and inspire. Choose from a thoughtfully selected menu of rice and noodle dishes to nourish body and soul, alongside fresh salads, shareable sides and delectable desserts.
Hot dishes include katsu curry made with a choice of succulent chicken, prawn, tofu or pumpkin; chicken or beef teriyaki; tangy yakisoba noodles with stir-fry; ramen noodles in a spicy veggie, chicken or seafood broth; or gyoza dumplings filled with prawn, chicken or spinach.
Wagamama’s standards are high, their ingredients are cooked fresh, served fresh. Every bowl and plate filled with them is served as soon as it’s ready; the colours and aromas, flavours and spices are always at their best when they touch your table
Simply take your seat, order your drinks and help yourself to any number of dishes from the belt. All the dishes are served on coloured plates, each colour representing a different price. You can order hot food and any dishes you cannot see on the belt from a team member. When you have finished your meal, the value of your coloured plates is added up to work out your bill. How easy is that?
If you would rather have rice, you’re in luck - the menu features many Japanese favourites; fresh, authentic dishes that are updated seasonally. Fresh juices, hot drinks, wine, sake and expertly crafted Asian beers too are available to complement your meal. 10/04/2019 16:04
When they expanded from a nook next to Central Station, school buddies Thomas Oxford and Oliver Coysh took their loyal fanbase with them, along with their top traybakes and quality coffee. The story of how The Exploding Bakery came to be is detailed amusingly on the bakery’s website. In short the duo’s quest to sell wholesale traybakes made with ground nut flours, butter and polenta, went from the pair taking a crash course in coffee making and exploring the notion of supplying other cafes with their wares in 2011, to a newly opened wholesale production kitchen and plans for extending the cafe further still this year. The Exploding Bakery experience is a delightfully physical one. The understated shop front yields to a buzzing bakery that specialises mostly in cakes, but has a modest offering of sourdough loaves for most of the week too. The wooden tables, mismatched chairs and the sound of steaming coffee machines create a feeling of industry. And certainly the industrious team is hard at it, catering for the dozens of regulars, visitors, and newly arrived commuters alike with hot drinks and their desired bakes. The energy behind the original vision for the bakery is evident in every aspect of the business, from the vibrant dynamic of the cafe and bakery itself, right the way to the business’ core.

With the help of a few ‘to the wire’ refurbs and lots of friends/lovely staff to assist Circa1924 can now boast a moody cocktail bar featuring regular live music with some great local artists playing every week. With over 40 house infused gins, rums & other spirits to choose from as well as an ever changing offering of craft beer‘s and cider on draught. In the revamped restaurant, there’s a definite Scandi-influence, not so 20’s but hey! The menu offering is super seasonal, with unprotentious, tasty dishes using only the best local ingredients and ethically sound suppliers. As a seafood & steakhouse the locally bred beef is dry-aged for 28 days and as ever Circa1924 serve only the freshest seafood straught from the world-famous fishmarkets of South Devon. In the kitchen, Rob (Head Chef/Owner) & Christian (Development Chef), previously of Jason Atherton’s Temple & Son’s, are constantly curing, fermenting or pickling something, attempting to bring a style of dining that Exeter hasn’t seen. Crocketts
2 Upper Paul Street, EX4 3NB Part of the neighborhood. Crocketts is unspeakably elegant. Stepping through the traditional front door of this Grade II listed building, tucked away on Upper Paul Street around the corner from Gandy Street, you’re met with a feeling of calm but also the glamour of a country house drawing room. Muted shades of green brush the wall and antique chandeliers hang from the tall ceilings. And yet, the atmosphere is joyful and welcoming. You’re immediately drawn to the curved wooden long handmade copper bar, adorned with botanicals, herbs, citrus fruits and glassware. Behind the bar, your eye is captivated by the shelves which host this bar’s real draw. Gin. And gin they have. In fact, over 115 varieties such as the award winning Tarquins, local favourite Exeter Gin, Distinctly, Papillion and Salcombe, which is handcrafted with Dartmoor water to the wonderfully named Granny Garbett’s, Ivor the Boneless or Scapegrace sourced from New Zealand, Malfy sourced from Italy or familiar titles such as Hendricks and Aviation Gin. From artisanal, small batch gins to known staples, Crocketts covers all requests. And, if it is here it all gets a little confusing, then the Crocketts team, led by Noah, is on hand to gently guide, suggest and lead you through the glorious
world of gin. The team will help you chose the gin based on your preference for citrus, sweet, spicy or maybe just strong, in a friendly unassuming but incredibly knowledgeable way. Or simply stick with your preference for the bottle design (look out for the Isle of Harris Gin, infused with sugar kelp or Abelforth’s Bathtub Gin, both of which have gloriously unique designs.) Gin chosen, its time to talk tonic, but we’ll leave team to talk you through the options, for there a fair few. The menu at Crocketts also lists an impressive range of delicious gin-based cocktails, from classics such as the negroni, gin fizz Clover Club or gimlet Bees Knees or if you fancy something different, again ask the Crocketts team and they’ll help you out, this time adding a little cocktail shaking flair. Stand at the bar and relish in gin inspired conversation, seek out a table upstairs to huddle around with friends or tuck into the booth and share secrets, Crocketts offers an experience for everyone. Jazz nights are especially fun and worth keeping an eye out for. Just make sure you arrive early. As Crockett’s say, ‘Gin, it’s a wonderful thing.’ Just don’t tell anyone about this place, it’s our little secret.

Little Drop of Poison
Riddle & Rye
154 Fore Street, Exeter EX4 3AT
223-226 High Street, Exeter EX4 3LR
There has been a pub on this site in Fore Street since the 1800s, so it is no surprise the opening of a new pub was met with interest and fair bit of excitement amongst the people of Exeter.
Riddle & Rye is a cellar bar serving top level beers, burgers and cocktails. Located along the busy High Street, stepping down into Riddle & Rye reveals a large bar area with the added attraction of booths that can be booked for you and your friends, complete with your own fridge, stocked with your favourite drinks if you wish.
Little Drop of Poison opened in 2018 and is the ‘sister pub’ to The Beer Cellar in South Street, owned by local businessman, James Hornblower. Taking its name from one of the building’s original uses: an apothecary aptly named ‘The Medicine and Chemical Hall, today’s bar is set in a single large room with one bar displaying an impressive array of taps serving keg and craft beers, there are between three to six changing cask ales alongside a selection of gravity dispensed ciders. With live music performed in the bar every Friday, a quiz on Tuesdays and a free-to-use pool table, Little drop of Poison is a friendly pub where you can go to relax and unwind. Thanks to the bar’s dog-friendly policy, your four-legged friend will be just as welcome as you are. Since its opening. Little Drop of Poison has become a part of the Fore Street community

Tabac Tap House 1A The Crescent, Queen St, Exeter EX4 3SB There is more than a little je ne c’est quoi to this Frenchinspired corner of Station Crescent. This bar in station crescent has established itself as a popular hot spot to regulars and visitors, not least because the bar’s position benefits from some of the longest sunshine hours of any pub in the city centre. Sure enough, although it’s about 6pm in June the tables outside are sunny with laughter, while other customers take advantage of the air conditioning inside the French tobacconist-inspired bar. ‘The crescent is a great neighbourhood,’ says Tabac Manager, Joe. ‘There’s a real feeling of community here between all the businesses, and we love our customers too. Although it is in a very central location there are never any problems as the atmosphere is always good humoured, animated and pleasant.’ Indeed, it is just as comfortable to sit solo and enjoy a pint of one of the bar’s own brews as it is to clink glasses of Tabac’s refreshing in-house gin with friends or colleagues after work. The small team is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the drinks they pour and proud of the gins and IPAs that are produced wholesale by the bar’s own distillery and brewery.
Here the popular spirits, Apple Pie Moonshine and Devon Gin, are made alongside various beers, including such favourites as Black Boar and Phat Nancy – the eponymous head brewer. The team also experiments with a range of seasonal brews that feature ingredients such as beetroot or elderflower, and certainly the gins are serving as popular summer staples to customers this year. The whole look and feel of the pub is one created inhouse by the head brewer and General Manager, Nancy Robinson, but Hamish is always keen to respond to creative ideas shared by members of the team. Joe, manager at Tabac, says one of the advantages of being independent is that you don’t have to be driven by targets alone. ‘Our ideas are always welcomed and staff are relaxed and happy; we are very much like a family and our customers are too, by extension. Because of our location we get a lot of teachers and uni staff popping in as well as commuters. Conversation is always pleasant, polite and interesting.’ The bar rotates 30 or so ales as well as the beer it crafts for keg and kask in its small experimental brewery. To the newcomer, Tabac may be on the petite side, but, it is perfectly formed – especially when you get to enjoy one of those beers watching the sun dip over the railway bridge at the end of the day.
Since opening Tabac and its sister gastro pub, The Fat Pig, on the other side of town, Hamish has launched Exeter Distillery beneath St Thomas Station.

The Beer Cellar
The Chevalier Inn
2 South Street, Exeter EX1 1DZ
81-82 Fore Street, Exeter EX4 3HR
Discerning beer drinkers with an appetite for sampling a wide range of different beer styles can sample beers from the globe’s best breweries at Exeter’s first craft beer bar.
There has been a hostelry on the site currently occupied by The Chevalier Inn since the 18th Century. J D Wetherspoon, the well-known pub chain, took over the premises in 1997 and have transformed it into the thriving pub it is today. Their most recent addition to the building was an open-air terrace on the top floor with roof-top views across to the Cathedral spire.
Fronting both South Street and Cathedral Yard where customers will find the bar’s outdoor seating area, The Beer Cellar offers a variety of on-tap beers. Popular choices remain, but many of the visiting beers will not return for a year or so. An impressive choice of bottled beers is available also, with options to suit most palettes. The Beer Cellar is the ‘sister pub’ to Little Drop of Poison in Fore Street, owned by local businessman, James Hornblower. James has met the challenge of stocking more unusual beers by sourcing products from breweries across the country as well as further afield, from Europe and America, by dealing with breweries and a supportive craft environment.
Wetherspoon’s pubs are famous for their varied food menu, offering hearty breakfasts, a delicious range of pizzas and hugely popular ‘Club’ deals for lovers of steak, curry, fish and Sunday brunch. The extensive drinks menu includes all your favourite beers, lagers, ciders and spirits, including an everexpanding Gin Palace collection. Look out for their regular real ale and cider festivals. Tea, coffees and soft drinks are also available.
Regular customers from across Exeter and visiting tourists enjoy this small, but unique bar, so “Thank you, James” from the many fans of quality beer.
