Tyepyedong do not only noodles but also a variety of rice dishes to suit everyone’s palette. With all meals cooked fresh to order, the chef is more than happy to modify a dish to your preference with typical examples being “...but with no prawns” or “...extra spicy”. Artificial flavourings, or added colourings are avoided by the restaurant as it strives to ensure A377 that your food is of the highest quality. The five types of noodles available are cooked in three different ways; they can be served in broth as soups, stir-fried in a wok or boiled and served like spaghetti with the ingredients stir-fried in sauce and carefully layered on-top. The soups are cooked the authentic Chinese way, so it is worth remembering that it may not be quite what you expect! The atmosphere is friendly and the service quick, with all food being cooked in view of customers who can order drinks while their food is prepared (the green tea is a popular favourite). ake the time to ‘turn the corner’ from the hustle of the high-street’s national brands, and you’ll discover a wealth of independents including shops, bars, restaurants and cafés in the surrounding back streets of Exeter. One such gem not to be missed is relaxed and friendly hostility ‘The Oddfellows’ located in New North Road with a total of 120 covers. Built in 1857 tucked between Victorian houses and city-centre offices, the multi award-winning gastro pub is one of the city’s most established meeting places and home to Exeter’s best kept secret, ‘The Speakeasy Cocktail Bar’ on the first floor. Independently owned by landlords Yvan and Faye Williams, The Oddfellows is a fantastic place to patron for locals and visitors alike. The décor is eclectic and interesting, the menu British themed (mostly) and centres itself around local, seasonal and sustainable produce. Proper cocktails upstairs in ‘The

Speakeasy’, coffee, craft beers, dogs welcome in the bar, and a very impressive list of 30 West Country gins. Lunch, dinner and Epic Sunday roast. Faye said; “Multi-national brands have their place, but people forget that when you support chains, the money doesn’t usually stay in the area to boost the local economy. When you choose independent, you are supporting local families, small producers, brewers, farmers etc. You are choosing to invest in your local community. Oooo Arrrrrrr!” The Oddfellows do working lunch specials for those on a budget or are time constrained, and offer a fixed price lunch which changes often. As the seasons change - so does the dinner menu, taking full advantage of the best the South West region can offer. All food is freshly prepared and cooked on the premises by their chefs, supplied by long-established independent suppliers. Yvan explains: “We are passionate about supporting our local suppliers to

source high-quality seasonal and fresh ingredients, such as free range, slow reared meats and sustainable fish as much as we can.” He adds: “We also cater for any special dietary requirements and take the time to create imaginative, varied and tasty dishes such as curried chickpea burger, cheese, mint and cucumber yogurt, beef tomatoes, baby gem and fries, perfect for vegans without the yogurt. Three generations of the Doble family have been providing customers old and new with quality jewellery and vintage watches for 100 years.

ince their original shop opened in Ottery St Mary, Exeter in 1918, the business has thrived, with the family and their staff always striving to meet the demands and specialist needs of their customers. The Doble family’s long-standing success has been built on a reputation of offering the highest quality of new and antique jewellery with every piece hand-picked, making each item extra special to you and them. The bedrock of the family business that still exists today is the firm belief that purchasing jewellery should be a memorable experience and Dobles endeavour to ensure a high quality of service. The Ivor Doble shop in Sidwell Street has been a local landmark and the family’s flagship store since the 1960s. In the early 70s Ivor’s son, John Doble joined the business, resulting in expansion to include a second shop in Exeter in Cowick Street and three further new branches outside of the City. With John opening his own store in Torquay in 1981, the family

offered a great balance of shops around Devon and made the name of Doble one of the most established in the area. Nowadays, the family continues to run their two stores in Exeter, as well as branches in Torquay, Brixham and Totnes. Visitors to Dobles will find a wealth of jewellery, new and old. Furthermore affordable contemporary watches produced by well-known brands Seiko and vintage pre-owned pieces produced by the likes of Rolex, Omega, TAG, Breitling and Jaeger-Lecoultre. Expansion, whilst continuing to deliver an unsurpassed level of service, continues to this day, with Ivor’s grandson, Roo, overseeing the renovations to the Doble flagship store in Sidwell Street. elping us all achieve that dream of perfecting our cookery skills is Natalie, owner of Bake, a new addition to Paris Street that offers baking enthusiasts, both experienced and novice, a wide range of baking utensils and decorations. With a background in cookery retail and as an experienced baking and sugar craft specialist herself, Natalie is ideally suited to help and advise her customers, whether they are going to make an everyday loaf of bread or going to produce a speciality cake for a wedding or birthday. “People are taking a much greater interest in what they eat nowadays, and knowing what ingredients are in our food has become increasingly important”, says Natalie. “Baking has also become a popular recreation for a much wider group of people, regardless of age or gender.” Natalie’s plans include launching monthly promotions that will enable customers to try different products from the wide range she stocks. Natalie will put together all the utensils required to prepare different bakes and then promote this on online and through her social media, having baked the items herself to show customers the finished product. Bake is open Monday to Saturday from 9:30am to 6:00pm and customers are welcome to call in for advice and to share their interest in baking.

Since we opened in June 2015, the place has had quite a change-up, the venue being almost unrecognisable from the start. With the help of a few ‘to the wire’ refurbs and lots of friends/lovely staff to assist we can now boast a moody cocktail bar featuring regular live music with some great local artists playing every week. With over 40 house infused gins, rums and other spirits to choose from as well as an ever changing offering of craft beers and cider on draught. In the revamped restaurant, there’s a definite Scandi-influence, not so 20’s but hey! Our menu offering is super seasonal, with unpretentious, tasty dishes using only the best local ingredients and ethically sound suppliers. As a seafood and steakhouse our locally bred beef is dry aged for 28 days and as ever we serve only the freshest seafood straight from the world-famous fishmarkets of South Devon. In the kitchen, Rob (Head Chef/Owner) and Christian (Development Chef), previously of Jason Atherton’s Temple & Sons, are constantly curing, fermenting or pickling something, attempting to bring a style of dining that Exeter hasn’t seen. cGahey’s is a shop of the Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker era, and a wonder. Owned, managed and loved by charismatic Martin McGahey, this specialist family business on the corner of Castle Street and High Street is an Exeter institution and one that should be celebrated. One claim to fame, is that the business received national recognition for being the only independent on the High Street. The tobacco business may have evolved as people’s tastes have changed, but the business continues to thrive and still stocks a wonderment of specialist tobacco, pipes, cigars and whiskies. Behind the scenes and winding down the stairs, is a little piece of history – displayed in full glory and now housing a small office is the original wooden shop façade. It’s a beautiful piece of Exeter history. Although starting out with a desire to go to agricultural college, Martin has developed a real passion for the business that was passed on to him through family. He is mostly self-taught and his knowledge of the tobacco world is now unsurpassed. Indeed, seeing a gap in the market for a text book on tobacco and snuff, Martin took it upon himself to catalogue a full database, used by the industry to this day. From the aromatics used in tobaccos, flakes (pressed tobacco), why Havana’s have the best reputation in the cigar industry, the up and coming craft cigar tobaccos of Nicaragua, Mexico and the new world Caribbean cigars, Martin can talk you through the intricacies of this specialist world. The tobaccos stocked range from St Bruno, Condor and Erinmore to the rarer blends such as Digger, Plum Cake and Three Castles. The staffs at McGahey’s are loyal, welcoming and are more than happy to help the hesitant customer. Whether you’d like to buy a celebration or occasion cigar, a gift pipe or a hold a cigar and whisky tasting event, they’ll more than happily help. Did you know that the world record for pipe smoking (with strict conditions including being given only 2 matches and no relighting) is over 3 hours, that’s quite a feat. Multi-award-winning chocolate house, Chococo, is for everyone – from discerning connoisseurs to mini messy lollipop makers.

he chocolatier and café in Gandy Street is the third of four chocolate houses conceived by co-founders, Claire and Andy Burnet. Since the couple established the business in 2002, their winning combination of local suppliers and ethically-sourced global ingredients places Chococo firmly in Exeter’s artisan quarter and has earned them 75 prestigious fine food and business awards. Thousands of people have since sampled the delights of their fresh chocolates, which are created from locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients - including local fresh cream - blended with fine origin chocolate. Although typically chocolate is considered naughty, Claire is happy

to point to the absence of any nasties in the ingredients list here. “There is no palm oil and there are no weird syrups or any other nonsense in our chocolates,” she says. “As an independent business we are proud to be able to choose many of our ingredients locally, from producers across Devon and Dorset. Our Salcombe Sundowner chocolate, which won an Academy of Chocolate Award, contains Salcombe gin along with other botanicals and ruby grapefruit, for instance.” Chococo’s team often add their own ideas to the list of enchanting and enticing ingredients that feature in the handmade chocolates, and Claire is receptive to new inspiration and creativity. “Together we can create some magic,” she says. “Our

team is really knowledgeable too. You can pop in and they are more than happy to advise, educate and guide you.” Chocolates aren’t the only things on the menu. Customers can design their own ice cream sundaes, sip on hot chocolate or milkshakes, or delve into a chocolate fondue – and there are even light savoury bites available for those who want to keep the sweet for a treat. Furthermore, this summer parents can treat little ones to a chocolate lollypop making workshop and enjoy a coffee while the kids get messily creative combining delicious ingredients. “Chocolate is for everyone,” says Claire. “We also cater for different diets, for example those who prefer a low-sugar option. Dark chocolate by nature is naturally vegan, so we can help customers who prefer a non-dairy option to find their perfect premium quality chocolate from across the globe, from Venezuela and Madagascar to Tanzania and Vietnam. Stepping through the traditional front door of this Grade II listed building, tucked away on Upper Paul Street around the corner from Gandy Street, you’re met with a feeling of calm but also the glamour of a country house drawing room. Muted shades of green brush the wall and antique chandeliers hang from the tall ceilings. And yet, the atmosphere is joyful and welcoming. You’re immediately drawn to the curved wooden long handmade copper bar, adorned with botanicals, herbs, citrus fruits and glassware. Behind the bar, your eye is captivated by the shelves which host this bar’s real draw. Gin. And gin they have. In fact, over 115 varieties such as the award winning Tarquins, local favourite Exeter Gin, Copperfrog Papillion and Salcombe, which is handcrafted with Dartmoor water to the wonderfully named Granny Garbett’s, Ivor the Boneless or Scapegrace sourced from New Zealand Malfy sourced from Italy or familiar titles such as Hendricks and Aviation Gin. From artisanal, small batch gins to known staples, Crocketts covers all requests. And, if it is here it all gets a little confusing, then the Crocketts team, led by Noah, is on hand to gently guide, suggest and lead you through the glorious world of gin. EXPLODING BAKERY

When they expanded from a nook next to Central Station, school buddies Thomas Oxford and Oliver Coysh took their loyal fanbase with them, along with their top traybakes and quality coffee.

he story of how The Exploding Bakery came to be is detailed amusingly on the bakery’s website. In short the duo’s quest to sell wholesale traybakes made with ground nut flours, butter and polenta, went from the pair taking a crash course in coffee making and exploring the notion of supplying other cafés with their wares in 2011, to a newly opened wholesale production kitchen and plans for extending the cafe further still this year. The Exploding Bakery experience is a delightfully physical one. The understated shop front yields to a buzzing bakery that specialises mostly in cakes, but has a modest offering of sourdough loaves for most of the week too. The wooden tables, mismatched chairs and the sound of steaming coffee machines create a feeling of industry. And certainly the industrious team is hard at it, catering for the dozens of regulars, visitors, and newly arrived commuters alike with hot drinks and their desired bakes. The energy behind the original vision for the bakery is evident in every aspect of the business, from the vibrant dynamic of the café and bakery itself, right the way to the business’ core. “Being an independent café in Exeter may seem daunting in a city so rife with venture capitalist chains,” says co-owner Oliver. “But we believe that the tide is turning and this wonderful city is now flippin’ the middle finger towards corporate greed, and feasting on the wealth of individuality.” In line with the bakery’s name, its sensory mood is summarised with similar energy in their statement: “Our cakes are made by hand, in small batches, by some very sexy people. Everything is squeezed, cracked and beaten by hand, then gently caressed into the ovens before being lovingly tucked up in the finest cardboard.” But it’s not all saucy dynamic verbs. The bakery keeps lunchtime diners happy with sausage rolls, as well as tortilla, soups, salads, toasties and other pastries. With plans to further expand the lunchtime menu, Oliver has shared a favourite fit-for-summer recipe with us.

500g Heritage tomatoes or good vine tomatoes 20g Basil 10g Mint 400g Butter Beans (drained weight) 1 small red onion or shallot 20 ml olive oil 20 ml vinegar (elderflower is good this time of year and easy to make) 1 teaspoon caster sugar or honey 1 teaspoon sea salt A good grinding of pepper

 In a large bowl squeeze your lemon juice and add your sugar, salt and pepper.  Slice your onion as thinly as possible into half rings and place in the bowl with lemon juice to macerate.  Chop the tomatoes in a random fashion with a super sharp knife so the juice and seeds don’t fall out. Add to the bowl with the onions.  Drain your butter beans and add to the bowl with the tomatoes and add the olive oil.  Pick your herbs and put any delicate end leaves to one side. Slice up the bulk of the herbs and add to the bowl and gently fold everything together.  Transfer to a deep platter or bowl and place all the delicate herbs on top.

 Serve using a spoon to gather all the juices at the bottom and plonk into a bowl. Drizzle a little more olive oil on the top and eat with good bread, whilst drinking cheap wine. Keeps for a few days in the fridge and often tastes better the next day.

The latest addition to Gandy Street’s exciting range of distinctive, independent businesses is owned and run by a genuine food artist. James McCarthy has a deeprooted passion for the beautiful Asian street food he lovingly produces.

hen the growing number of regular customers select from the menu of Chinese style salads, pork bao buns, chicken satay, tofu and Vietnamese style baguettes, James often recommends additions to heighten and complement the tastes they’re about to enjoy. James spent twenty years living in Asia and his wife, Natalie is Chinese Filipino. Their mutual love of the area’s cuisine is obvious and following on from the success of their deli in Lyme Regis, the husband and wife team now give shoppers, visitors and city centre workers the opportunity to enjoy delicious healthy food produced with a strong ethical belief. Red Panda Deli is aiming to produce delicious meals with as little food waste and environmental impact as possible. Instead of importing exotic ingredients from around the planet, a carefully chosen product substitution policy has been introduced to lessen the ‘food miles’, but still retain the unique flavours. The organically grown ingredients are sourced locally from ‘Trill Farm’ in east

Devon. The freshly prepared food is served in recyclable packaging and the entire menu is planned to minimise waste, so when it’s gone, it’s gone! Red Panda’s food is produced to be vegan, but carnivores are not left out, as delicious meat such as chicken, pork or duck can be added at the end of the cooking, just as the dishes are presented to customers. The environment in which the food is prepared allows for vegetables and meat to be prepared separately and no fish sauce is used. This means the food produced is lot healthier and non-meat eaters can be assured their choices are not compromised. Located at the Little Queen Street end of Gandy Street, Red Panda is open to serve its thoughtfully prepared food at lunchtimes from Monday to Saturday, and in the evenings from Thursday to Saturday.

TABAC TAPHOUSE

There is more than a little je ne c’est quoi to this French-inspired corner of Station Crescent.

abac Taphouse, the product of owner Hamish Lothian’s vision, celebrates its third birthday in August. In that short time the bar in Station Crescent has established itself as a popular hot spot to regulars and visitors, not least because the bar’s position benefits from some of the longest sunshine hours of any pub in the city centre. Sure enough, although it’s about 6pm in June the tables outside are sunny with laughter, while other customers take advantage of the air conditioning inside the French tobacconist-inspired bar. “The crescent is a great neighbourhood,” says Tabac Manager, Joe. “There’s a real feeling of community here between all the businesses, and we love our customers too. Although it is in a very central location there are never any problems as the atmosphere is always good humoured, animated and pleasant.” Indeed, it is just as comfortable to sit solo and enjoy a pint of one of the bar’s own brews as it is to clink glasses of Tabac’s refreshing inhouse gin with friends or colleagues after work. The small team of three is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the drinks they pour and proud of the gins and IPAs that are produced wholesale by the bar’s own distillery and brewery. Since opening Tabac and its sister gastro pub, The Fat Pig, on the other side of town, Hamish has launched Exeter Distillery beneath St Thomas Station. Here the popular spirits, Apple Pie Moonshine and Devon Gin, are

made alongside various beers, including such favourites as Black Boar and Phat Nancy – the eponymous head brewer. The team also experiments with a range of seasonal brews that feature ingredients such as beetroot or elderflower, and certainly the gins are serving as popular summer staples to customers this year. The whole look and feel of the pub is one created in-house by the head brewer and General Manager, Nancy Robinson, but Hamish is always keen to respond to creative ideas shared by members of the team. Joe, manager at Tabac, says one of the advantages of being independent is that you don’t have to be driven by targets alone. “Our ideas are always welcomed and staff are relaxed and happy; we are very much like a family and our customers are too, by extension. Because of our location we get a lot of teachers and Uni staff popping in as well as commuters. Conversation is always pleasant, polite and interesting.” The bar rotates 30 or so ales as well as the beer it crafts for keg and kask in its small experimental brewery. To the newcomer, Tabac may be on the petite side, but, not backed by a big corporate team, it is perfectly formed – especially when you get to enjoy one of those beers watching the sun dip over the railway bridge at the end of the day.

THE REAL FOOD STORE & CAFÉ

It’s less than a year at this Queen Street site but the Real Food Store already looks as if it’s been here forever. With a prime position right next to Exeter’s Central Station, this airy, bright shop simply overflows with colourful, tempting local produce.

concept which rose out of the Transition Exeter movement, the Real Food Store has been trading since 2011 but has only recently moved from its original space in Paris Street. Rob Dickinson is a co-manager, so called because all staff share management responsibility equally, and receive equal pay. Rob says, “The concept of the store is based around a workers cooperative model so we feel this sort of management system works well for us. With key suppliers like Shillingford Organics, Riverford Farm and Emma’s Bread, the shop really showcases the best of the westcountry. Another focus for the store, is to support the drive to cut down on packaging and plastics. Rob says that they’ve recently expanded their range of packaging free lines. “We’ve introduced bulk buying of nuts, loose coffee beans and other store cupboard essentials. We’re also selling housekeeping products like laundry powder, washing up liquid and detergents in bulk. Many customers bring their own containers to fill, or we sell glass Kilner jars and cotton bags.” Alternatives to dairy, meat and gluten is also a growing market and a way the Real Food Store can really outdo its competitors. Rob says, “We love to meet small suppliers and try to support their growing business – that’s what we’re all about. A good example was a local company who recently popped into the shop to show us their dairy-alternative butter product. We agreed to trial it and then stock it and since then they’ve gone on to win more business elsewhere.” As part of the move, the popular Real Food Café is now trading inside Central Library. With the same emphasis on locally-sourced, ethical food, it serves up lunches, hot drinks and cakes. 1 tbsp olive oil or coconut oil 2 white onions, diced 1 red chilli, finely chopped 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 - 4cm fresh ginger, grated 1 Butternut Squash, chopped into chunks 3 sweet potatoes (optional), chopped into chunks 1 - 2 litres of vegetable stock 1 block of coconut cream, sliced 2 tablespoons of crunchy or smooth peanut butter Salt and pepper to season

SIMPLE THAI BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP  Put a large soup pan onto the hob, on medium heat and add the tablespoon of olive oil.  Once the oil is hot, add the onions, garlic and chilli to the pan and fry for 5 minutes or until onions start to brown.  Add the ginger and cook for a further 2 - 4 minutes. Add the chunks of squash, sweet potato and stir to coat.  Pour over stock and bring to boil. Add the coconut cream and peanut butter and stir to combine.  Turn down the heat and leave to simmer for 20 - 30mins (or until the squash and sweet potato are cooked through).  With a hand blender, blitz the soup until smooth and creamy. Season to taste.

I loved the feel of the shop, the smell, the atmosphere and the glorious range of products. I’ve always been a magpie for pieces that make me smile and love search out independent shops that offer something different to their customers. I’ve always worked in office based roles so when the opportunity to own Moko, came around, I thought this is my chance to do something I really love. Yes, it was a risk and yes, I had no prior business experience, but I believed I could, so I did. I believe that you own your future. Just because you haven’t shouldn’t mean you can’t. It was a brave decision, and I am forever thankful to have the support of my wonderful family, I haven’t looked back since once, nor do I want to!”

Since having children, I treasure that hour or so of quiet time in the evening, writing lists – I love a list – and watching Netflix.” Favourite piece of clothing? “A Diana Wilson scarf. I had never bought something that precious, but on securing the keys for Moko, I treated myself, it’s glorious and brings me the same joy now as it did when I bought it.” What’s next? “To grow Moko as a brand across platforms. Where could be more appropriate for a plant-based cafe to flourish than on the city’s most popular Green?

he Plant Cafe is located at 1 Cathedral Green; one of the busiest, buzziest sites in the city. Amid the hubbub, The Plant attracts regular lunchgoers and curious tourists alike with hot and cold drinks, and platters and bowls piled with tasty and nourishing plant-based delights. The café opened in 2004 and at that time staff members, Abi, Hannah and Polly, were employed by The Plant’s previous owners who, in 2008, decided to sell up. So the trio pooled their resources to take it on themselves. “We couldn’t see the café in anyone else’s hands,” says Polly Barnes, one of the three owners. “We are very passionate about what we do. We all love cooking and creating new recipes and flavours and we each have very different styles, but they all come together in our planty way.” The Plant is one of several vegan and veggie-friendly hotspots in the city, but its longevity is testimony

to its success in catering for a broad palette. What’s more, being independent means the team can make their own creative decisions - because they know their customers best. “We love the fact that the independent scene in Exeter is massive and really supportive of each other. We are the little ones trying to be seen amongst all the big chain restaurants and coffee shops and we all work together to make that happen.” A philosophy that’s supportive of other indie eateries is typical of the progressive spirit behind the cafe, which is similarly reflected in their choice of suppliers. High quality, locally-sourced ingredients are important and, because the menu only uses local and organic produce that is inseason, the team has fun rising to the challenge of being inventive and playful with their recipes. “We have a template that we follow in the café. The flavours of our

tarts and frittatas (for which there are vegan options) change often. These are served with a selection of freshlyprepared salads that also change daily,” says Polly. Not only does it keep regular diners intrigued, but a responsiveness to what is in-season means the café is not clocking up air miles bringing in ingredients. The vegan lifestyle has boomed in the past couple of years and the café is keeping up with the increased demand. It now offers a fifty percent vegan menu and most of the cakes are vegan too. “It’s lush to see people come in and actually have a choice, rather than being forced to go for the one option generally available to vegetarians - let alone vegans,” says Polly. “We take great pride in our product and genuinely feel that our food is really super-tasty.” Customers can expect to see different salads on the summer menu daily, and this abundant time of year will offer plenty of other nutritious and tasty options, too.

Nicky, owner of Insideout, delights, “When I buy stock for the shop, I pick six or seven of my core friends and envisage items in each of their homes, or clothes in each of their wardrobes to get a variety. Over time, I’ve learned to identify my customer, so now I know who I’m buying for, but ultimately everything I sell I adore too!” And this really is true. There are beautifully crafted handthrown ceramic jugs in serene blue hues, hand painted plates perfect

for serving cake, butter soft leather bags, unique handmade printed art and beautifully traditional decorative block letters. The real beauty of this independent, lies in the passion for their artisan partners all of whom are based in Devon and Cornwall and who stock an exclusive range of products in the shop. Nicky nurtures and invests in the relationships with these crafters and makers who benefit from Nicky’s trusted advice on what appeals to buyers. Some of the smaller producers, such as textile designer Alison Whateley, were working on a hobby basis but now work full time at their art and employ people themselves. The shop also have ranges from well-known brands such as East of India, Joma and are an Orla Kiely stockist. Insideout is joy and its products would be a joy to gift or be gifted.

The mod-inspired fashion shop sells carefully-sourced, quality items that reach across generations.

t’s appropriate that the little shop on North Street is so named, not only because the roundel is the most notable symbol of mod subculture, but the distinctive look keeps coming round: first in 60s, again in the 70s, once more in the Brit Pop-infused mid-90s, and now with a revived ska scene, which attracts people from all generations to habituate Exeter’s musical haunts. Andy Churchley and Jackie Vincent established Roundel Clothing in July 2017 in response to Andy’s frustration at having to travel to London to find the kind of clothes he liked. “You can’t tell what kind of fit or quality you’re going to get with some online purchases,’ says Andy. ‘Here we channel The Who’s famous lyrics with a see me, feel me, try me, philosophy.” Andy takes some of his broad selection of garments to scooter rallies across Devon, where customers enthusiastic for the geometric lines and shapes of the mod look can explore the real thing with faithfully reproduced fashions from brands like Solovair boots (which rival Dr Martens, but are produced in Northampton), Lambretta, Relco and Art Gallery. “The Kent Knitted Art Gallery polo shirt in sky blue is a great item for the summer,” says Andy. “Chris Packham was wearing one on Spring Watch recently. They are light

and comfortable as well as stylish and great quality.” There’s a women’s range too, but today’s female shoppers are just as happy to shop from smaller sizes of menswear as they are from the women’s Love Her Madly dresses, Madcap frocks and Relco pinafores. “We’re really happy being an independent fashion shop,’ says Jackie. ‘We’re not beholden to anyone and we can make our own creative decisions about what we sell.” The pair choose items they like themselves and they are unafraid to experiment with new lines. They will even order items in on behalf of a customer, just so that customer can try it, with no obligation for them to buy. The mod fashion culture nowadays is more outward-looking than the era-defining movement of the sixties. Andy and Linda are raising funds for charity by holding their March of the Mods event next year in support of a children’s cancer trust. “There are more details to follow on this event, but we’re looking forward to it. Watch this space,” says Andy.

The little bar at the top of South Street specialises in craft beers and pulls in both regulars and visitors who are keen to try something new.

hose with an appetite for sampling a wide range of different beer styles can expect to tour beers from the globe’s best breweries when they stop off at this friendly bar on Cathedral Green. Exeter has a thriving beer scene with a thirst for craft, and punters are treated to more than ‘the unusual’ when they pop in. Staff members are very knowledgeable: the ethos is to find the right beer for each customer by asking them questions rather than trying to push whatever happens to be on the pump that day. That said, the on-tap beers are always changing, and while some beers will always remain popular, many don’t come back round again for a year or so. There is an impressive choice of bottled beers too, with options to suit most palettes. The Beer Cellar was established by James Hornblower almost five years ago. James had been working at St Austell brewery after university, first down in St Ives for a couple of years before moving up to Topsham to work in The Globe, when a friend who worked in a brewery approached him to go into partnership by setting up a bar that would sell his beers. Around this time, UK craft beers were increasing in popularity and The Beer Cellar became one of the first dedicated craft beer bars in Devon.

“Devon is an area with a lot of good traditional beers, but not a lot of innovation in brewing,” says James. “So it was an opportunity for the bar to stock more unusual beers while more established pubs focused on the more local products.” James met the challenges of sourcing products from breweries across the country as well as further afield, from Europe and America, by dealing directly with breweries and a supportive craft community. “Some breweries even helped us out by working with other breweries local to them to put together a varied order from one area rather than supplying on their own beers,” says James. Cathedral Yard is a prime location for Devon’s visitors and one that has served The Beer Cellar well. Beloved by tourists and regulars alike, the challenge for the tiny bar has always been to fit them all in. As such, James opened a second venue in Fore Street at the end of June. More on this below. LITTLE DROP OF POISON

The success of the Beer Cellar has inspired founder, James Hornblower, to bring a long-neglected pub back to life with craft ales and great music.

he much larger location at the top of Fore Street, formerly The Mint Tavern, is a more traditional looking venue than The Beer Cellar, with a lot more scope for bringing buzz to Exeter’s cooler quarter. After some lengthy negotiation and renovation work, Little Drop Of Poison opened its doors at the end of June. The pub name is inspired by the Tom Waits song, and many of James’ clientele will concur with the opening line, ‘I like my town with a little drop of poison’. The name has further resonance with the address: back in 1838, it belonged to an apothecary, The Medicine And Chemical Hall. Today, however, the venue will be serving more palatable dosages than customers imbibed almost 200 years ago, and with plans for cocktails as well as twenty changing keg lines and eight cask ale pumps, the pub is likely to attract a broader base, too. Customers can expect a relaxing space that hosts events and live music, which will further enhance an area of Exeter that is

already known for attracting a thriving community of independent businesses and shoppers looking for a more enriching and different experience. “I hope to bring a welcoming day and evening venue where people can unwind,” says James. “Being an independent business has its good points as well as its challenges: there is no safety net if and you’ve really got to shout to make yourself heard over some of the larger chain retailers and bars, but it is also a great motivator to make things happen and frees you up to try new and innovative directions.”

ndrew and Gill Birnie took over the already wellestablished South Gate Gallery two and a half years ago, having moved to Exeter from the island of Guernsey. Andrew’s background is in commercial art. “I spent ten years in marketing and advertising which included designing logos, painting pub signs and murals and undertaking gold leaf work for the National Trust. I then went to university and pursued a career in economic policy and strategy, working as a senior manager for twenty years.” Gill, meanwhile, was establishing a career in IT. “I’m very numerate,” she says, “which comes in handy when working out complex mount cuttings – especially when we’re dealing with multiple apertures.” It’s Gill who programmes the computerised mount-cutter used to produce picture mounts to exact and often tricky specifications. “Ultimately,” Gill explains, “we just wanted to get out of the corporate rat-race to do something more arts-orientated.” “When taking over the gallery in 2016, we wanted to build on its exceptional reputation for quality framing and fine art sales. We decided to develop the art-sale side of the business, taking on more work from local artists,” says Andrew, “We have over 200 pieces for sale in the gallery and considerably more online.” “We are selective about the work we feature on the walls,” adds Gill. “As well as art by local artists we have pieces by nationally and internationally-renowned artists alike. We sell limited edition prints, original artwork and some sculptures, with prices varying from around £20 to £6,500.” “Our art ranges from landscapes and seascapes to wildlife and portraits, painted in oils, pastels, acrylics or watercolours. We certainly have some very talented artists some of which are becoming very collectible. We love to welcome people to our gallery and are happy to leave them to browse at their leisure or to chat to them about artists’ work. Any picture on our website can also be brought in for customers to view. There’s no obligation to buy – we just want to help customers find a picture that they love.” The gallery also provides a bespoke framing service and offers hundreds of frame styles and colours to suit all kinds of artworks. “Alongside the more regular framing of pictures, photographs and posters, we’ve framed a wide range of memorabilia including a dinner plate, medals, jewellery, military insignia and very recently a Nepalese baby carrier,” says Andrew. “All sorts of unusual things that require complex solutions.” “That’s where we work so well together,” adds Gill, “because we bounce ideas between us to come up with the perfect solution.”

Andrew has recently finished a project to frame a group of nine ornate antique plaster casts depicting scenes from the Alhambra Palace near Granada. It required designing and producing individual bespoke box frames which are in-keeping with the style of the artwork. “They looked absolutely stunning,” he says, “and the customer was very pleased!” It’s this commitment to customer care that really sets Gill and Andrew apart. “We’ve happily spent an hour with some customers in the gallery, helping them choose exactly the right frame,” says Gill. “Some people are just after advice or a quote, and there’s no obligation from us to buy.” “Sometimes customers know exactly what they want and leave with just that,” adds Andrew, “but others may need some gentle expert advice and leave with something even better than they were hoping for!” South Gate Gallery 64 South Street EX1 1EE t 01392 435800 w southgategallery.co.uk

PAVING THE WAY FOR SUCCESS La Fabrico celebrates one-year anniversary.

“A

lot of our clients say our showroom reminds them of a London vibe”, says Paul Greenslade, looking around La Fabrico’s boutique tile business in Exeter. It is a beautiful space, with examples of the finest stone, ceramic and porcelain products displayed tastefully on the walls like exhibits in an art gallery. Quirky contemporary lighting picks out textures of natural slate and stone, and the shimmer of metallic or mosaic finishes. Soft chill-out music plays, and the air is subtly scented with diffusers. The ‘vibe’ is relaxing, inspiring, and extremely upmarket. It is exactly what co-founders Paul Greenslade, Simon Pearce and Jon King envisioned when they opened La Fabrico. With 60 years’ experience between them in the tiling and stone industry, they wanted to pool their product knowledge and interior design flair to offer customers a unique experience. A year on, they have established La Fabrico as the local source

for the tile and stoneware products used by top designers and architects. They also offer an informal brain-storming service, sitting down with customers and poring over Pinterest boards, colour samples and magazine clippings, to help them achieve the look they want. “We really want to get inside your mind to see what you desire,” said Paul. “Do you want this quirky look, or this contemporary look? And then we can work towards that, through colours and sizes and shapes and textures. “We help people gather their thoughts, and bring the right things together. And we will be honest and say if we don’t think their idea will work. It’s not about just taking the money.” Paul is proud that La Fabrico have clinched a deal to become the exclusive supplier for a product which is “bang on trend”, the largest tile format in the world. Techlam tiles are three metres by one metre, very thin, and are revolutionising the decoration and architecture sectors.

They come in various finishes including a very contemporary ‘worn metallic’ effect, and are much in demand for bathrooms and showers because they minimise grouting. Among the year’s other developments is the move to source many of their other products directly from suppliers in Spain and Italy, rather than buying from importers in England. They are also working more closely with the upmarket kitchen showroom, Spillers of Chard. A working SieMatic kitchen is being installed in the La Fabrico display area, and in exchange La Fabrico will be tiling the Spillers showroom. “You could say we’ve got our second showroom in a year,” said Paul. Meanwhile, the appointment of a new showroom manager in Exeter is freeing Paul to go out and meet designers, developers and architects, and to projectmanage larger design and installation schemes. While the team are happy to welcome clients to their Design Hub in the showroom, sometimes they need to be on-site. Paul and his co-directors firmly believe in the benefits of being an independent business. “We can choose our own hours, so if customers can’t make it during the day, given 48 hours’ notice we can open in the evening or on a Sunday,” he said. It also means that they can anticipate and deal with any problems themselves, swiftly and directly, which is not the case with many larger enterprises. Looking back over La Fabrico’s first year, Paul is quietly satisfied. “It’s nice to see how the growth has happened,” he said. “When you’re caught in the moment, you don’t really appreciate what you’ve done. But you take a moment and think, ‘it’s gone all right, really’.”

There’s huge authenticity in all that they do: a more genuine welcome is rare to receive and it soon becomes apparent they live by their principles. PJ explained that sustainability – a core part of a vegan lifestyle – is important to them both so the shop is run entirely on sustainable power, and the refit was carried out using reclaimed materials and existing fittings. And there are a few hidden luxuries for a customer at Roots. Great, locally roasted coffee from RoastWorks in Willand is on offer – soon to be their own bespoke roast. Request a beard trim and you might notice the organic French lavender infused warm towel. All products are 100% vegan, natural and handmade by small independent producers. “I’d like to think when our clients come in here, they know they’re going to be somewhere relaxing, somewhere they’ll be listened to, and somewhere they’ll get a great cut, that’s right for them. tep into the Roots Foundation at the bottom of Exeter’s New Bridge Street and you’re stepping into a unique take on barbering – fresh white walls, natural wood and plenty of green plants make it a light, spacious and welcoming space that only partly feels like a barbershop. There’s a clue, perhaps, in the name on the sign-written window: The Roots Foundation Barber Shop and Social Space. Moments after meeting proprietors PJ and Luke, it’s evident that their ethos is about a lot more than cutting hair. PJ tells me, “After a long stint of pop-up barbering, having retail space in the heart of one of Exeter’s independent quarters is a big deal for us. It was always going to be about creating somewhere which provides more than just a haircut. The biggest motivation for us was to create a warm, welcoming space where people of all ages, genders and backgrounds feel at home. We’re also the first vegan barbershop in the UK and this is something we are very passionate about.” With its pared-back but undeniably slick image, the shop somehow manages to appear both aspirational and approachable at the same time. And that’s key to their policy of inclusivity. Despite receiving a traditional barber training, PJ says creativity is what’s essential to providing the best service. “We want to challenge the traditional stereotype of barbershops as “macho” environments which only welcome men. We cut hair for anyone – in fact, one of our newest clients is a lady in her 80s. We don’t discriminate on any level and so cuts cost the same, regardless of gender – it’s all based on the time a style takes.” The other side of the business – the Social Space – is an outlet for PJ and Luke’s other passions. Currently they’re hosting a powerful art exhibition raising awareness of men’s mental health, but in the future are interested in hosting events for anyone looking for a creative space.

search to find a way to relax and de-stress from the demands of a teaching career, combined with a passion for vintage fashion led to owner, Hayley, visiting a vintage clothes fair in 2014. Her keen interest in the unmatched style of swing dresses from the 1950s to 1960s developed into trading at vintage fairs with just a tiny, fold-up table and a single rail of frocks. With her popularity and reputation for selling quality vintage inspired clothing growing, Hayley soon expanded into larger vintage festivals. Just four years on from that initial interest, in March 2018, Hayley opened Frocks in Swing Time, her new shop in Fore Street. She has now been joined by her Sister and Stepmother, creating a unique family-run business offering a wide range of vintage style clothing & accessories in sizes 6-26 for ladies and childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clothing from new-born to age 12. Frocks in Swing Time now has a loyal band of regular customers that are increasing in number as more and more women are choosing to wear vintage outfits to special occasions like weddings or proms. nlike most shops you find on the high street, Sancho’s sources clothing that is fair trade certified and made from sustainable, natural materials. The highquality textiles, accessories and gifts are carefully sourced for their unique designs as well as for the stories of those who made them. Kalkidan and Vidmantas opened the doors to their first store in 2014 in response to their travels in Ethiopia, where they saw first-hand the effects of the fastfashion industry: low wages, and social and environmental destruction. The pair was keen to create an opportunity for sustainable development by supporting jobs through purchasing products from ethical brands. They even started their own brand, Scarves for Sustainability, to provide more options to conscious consumers keen to make their purchase decisions matter. The couple describe a more recent trip to Ethiopian cotton workshops as a ‘wonderfully endearing experience’, during which they discovered more about the production processes as well as chatting to weavers during their coffee break, whose knowledge helped the pair to think about how they might develop future designs. “We aspire to raise awareness as widely as we can about the cost of fast fashion,” says Kalkidan. “We want to host events and enable and empower the south west to really engage with sustainable fashion, and, as an extension, move towards sustainable and conscious living.” With so much textile waste going to landfill or incineration each year, Sancho’s places the emphasis on making investment purchases that don’t wear or date quickly. even years ago, Willow Hilson was the manager of a vintage clothes shop, then named Relevant, when the owner decided to sell. “I felt my heart would break if the shop wasn’t part of my everyday,” says Willow, “So I decided to make this my full-time position and to buy the business.” Now able to choose the creative direction of the shop, Willow could commit entirely to her passion for textiles and fashion - and fully apply her art and design background, which she nurtured at London’s prestigious St Martin’s College. The broader fashion industry is not known for sustainability, but shopping vintage is one of the earth-friendly options. Here, pre-loved items are given a new lease of life to be enjoyed by customers seeking something beautiful that can’t be found on the high street. “Each piece is selected for its high quality and distinctive design. The collection is curated to appeal to those who value high-quality textiles and are

looking for individual pieces to add to their wardrobes,” says Willow. The shop attracts customers from further afield who are drawn by the unique items listed on the website. Part of the experience is engaging with the items in the shop itself. The textures and colours of the fabrics and finishes are also features that are wonderful to experience first-hand. “Women of all ages who are looking for something original and appreciate the value of timeless design are drawn to the shop,” says Willow. “We source designs from across the world and regularly attend buying trips to Europe. Our strong online presence helps people who are looking for somewhere to re-home their treasured heirlooms, too.” Willow curates her collection for quality so each item is given space to be exhibited artistically in the soothing and beautifully

considered space. “Our expert team of seamstresses spend countless hours lovingly re-beading and mending longlost fashion pieces; wounded birds that deserve to be restored to their former glory.” Those interested in bringing their creativity to an item of clothing can bring it along to one of the workshops Willow will be running. Here participants will be able to embellish, design and revamp items to give them renewed beauty. ince it opened its doors in spring 2017, The Flat on Fore Street has been a hit with diners far beyond the vegan and vegetarian community. The restaurant’s ethos of ‘planet-friendly indulgence, done simply’ coupled with its reputation for a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, not to mention deliciously filling food, has kept hungry hoards coming back to enjoy inspired pizza and pasta dishes that are freshly-prepared using ethically-sourced ingredients. There’s more to come from The Flat this summer too. “We have some exciting plans for July and August,” says Chloe. “One big one is that we will now be opening for lunch on Sundays and we will be bringing back giro pizza, which is basically Italian for all you can eat!” Even with such a generous offering available, a plantbased diet cuts the average carbon footprint of an individual in half. Knowing that you are not consuming the planet’s resources makes a meal out all the more enjoyable. Student instruments can be bought with either their free adjusted set up, with string heights and bow curve adjusted, nut reshaped, fingerboard adjusted and pegs and fine tuners lubricated; or with their full workshop set up featuring a hand carved bridge, a good quality welladjusted soundpost, completely reshaped fingerboard (essential for accurate intonation) and the pegs refitted for ease and accuracy in tuning. Strings are always upgraded. Higher quality instruments are always fully set up. Rebecca started her first instrument when she was 13 years old with a local violin maker, which led her to study at the Cambridge Violin Maker's Workshop, and the Newark School of Violin Making.

Rebecca is now established as an experienced professional maker in her own right and enjoys making instruments in both baroque and modern set-ups. She continues to actively participate as an orchestral viola player. Jonathan studied Baroque and Renaissance stringed instruments and a course in Violin Making and Repair at the Newark School of Violin Making. His studies led to him to becoming a part-time lecturer at the School. Jonathan has also run wellregarded workshops in Canada and the UK as well working as an official restorer for the Benslow Music Trust. When Jonathan and Rebecca are not at the shop, they are most likely concentrating on their restoration work, but can be contacted by telephone.
