The Power of Intergration
A strategy of synergic development
The project is about dealing with the relationship between natural landscape and the local villages. Greenway is a newly built project in the planning of Guangdong Province. However, there are a few sections of the greenway do not have a good interaction with the local environment, which are only pathways instead of a link between nature, local people and visitors. The project is to create connections to all natural resources, intergrating them into a travel system. So as to excavate the protential value of countryside travel and the revive the old villages. Concept: Linear Landscape Corridor
Wetland Villages
Wildlife
Based on the original pattern of greenway lanscape, We come up with a concept of a Linear Park in the Greenway, focusing on the intergration of abundant travel resources, and connecting all key points to a travel route that contains historical site visits, sports field, and recreational entertainment.
Permeate
Aiming Goals:
Permeate Schools
Greenway Courier Station
1. Take the advantages of the historical sites along the greenway, making good use of travel resources that might brought income to the villagers. 2. Activate communication between the greenway visitors and the local villagers so as to revive the old village.
Permeate Historical Building
3. Raise the utilization rate of the greenway and improve the quality of the wetland as well.
Sports Theme Section Multiple Sports Area The rennovation of the sports area is extended from the center of the West Lake Sport Station. The original sports equippment are pretty dull. After the rennovation, larger space for activity is arranged along the greenway including extreme sports area and jogging track.
Extreme Sports Area Constant slope is built based on the original sports field, with less change to the environment to construct a playground for fun.
Natural and Historical Section
Pathway Crosses the farmland and wetland
The Hexagon Pathway The stability of hexagon and the multiple direction of paths that it creates is the reason to use this form. The pathway built on stilts helps shorten the distance between visitors and nature and avoids destruction. It allows visitors on greenway make contact with the local people. What's more, it is able to expand the playground of the local students.

A New Infrastructure for Polyfunctional Water Management in Lower Colorado Basin 3rd-yr MLA Thesis, 2017 Location: The Lower Colorado River Basin Advisor: Catherine Seavitt Nordenson, Mathew Seibert
Water Apportion, Users and Land Irrigated by the Colorado River
Dam Nation: A Questionable Future There are more than 87,000 dams in the United States and 60% of them are built between the 50s to the 70s of the 20th Century. Dam, a hard infrastructure for water storage and flood control, had passed its era due to its decreasing efficiency, the increasing demand from a growing population, and shortage of supply due to the rapid climate change. The Lower Colorado River is supporting critical agricultural area such as the Imperial Valley and the Yuma Irrigation District, which serves the food supply of the whole nation during the winter. The existing dam-reservoir system is a top-down, one-directional water management, which should be replaced by a more divided, flexible system.

Dams and the Profile of the Colorado River
Decreased Capacity & Shortage of Supply Sediment accumulated at the bottom of the reservoir decreases the capacity of the reservoir. Each year, the loss of water due to evaporation from Lake Mead is 800,000 acrefeet, as much as 1/10 of Arizona’s water consumption for a year. With increasing drought events taking place more often in recent years, many reservoirs reaches their lowest level of record. Shrinking reservoir capacity and constant drought events post threats on the life of the west.

The lower colorado river aquifer naturally divided into several confined units which are surrounded by bedrock. It suggests that the aquifer area is confined and the storage capacity is predictable. The aquifer has the potential to connect to the existing water distribution system and provides a backup support to the users.
Mohave Valley Groundwater Banking
Water Accounting: Storage, Use and Aquifer Capacity
/ Lake Mead: Modified Dam Operation + Solar Energy Farm Lake Mead will still be the main water storage pool but the water level will be low. Modification in the operation of the dam and its structure will bring endanger species back to the river and restore the flood plain ecology downstream. Large area of exposed land where the lake is drained will be covered by solar panels to compensate the energy that used to generated from the dam.
Existing Condition of the Colorado River
/ Yuma: Wetland as Climate Adapter for Agriculture Storage Units Strategic Plan
Wetland is valuable to be restored so as to retain flood water during wet seasons and provide moist for the adjacent farmland during drought events. These wetland also connected with the underground storage system which forms a half nature, half artificial infrastructure.
/ Mohave Valley: Flood Water Capture + Underground Storage Residential area within the floodplain and inefficiently irrigated agriculture will be retreated and the floodplain once existed is restored. Flood water during early spring are captured and stored for the dry days.Alfalfa, the major crop of the Palo Verde Valley, is a great opportunity to practice runoff farming: runoff collection, filter, and storage/reuse for irrigation.
/ Palo Verde Valley: Fallow Field Flyway & Seasonal Habitat These fallow land can be served as retention basin for water sotrage. After the recharge process, they are developed into grassland, forming temporary habitat for migrating birds along the Pacific Flyway in spring and autum.
Coordinative Water Storage Units: Utilizing the confined aquifer as storage unit for the local community, the water storage and banking of the Lower Colorado River no longer depend on the top-down operation of the reservoir. Each unit is managed by the local community. All storage units have close communication in forecast, operation and monitor and work as a coordinative network supporting each other when facing drought or flood event. Water should be calculated by its efficiency instead of volume. Therefore during the recharge process, temporary habitats are cultivated for migrating birds and pollinators. The process of water storage produces ecological value.

A Landscape as Social Justice Enhancement Parks ≠Place of High Crime Rates
The site locates in Brownsville, one of the most notorious neighborhood of high crime rates in Brooklyn, which has most of its residents in low income and education level. In order to embrace the up coming public housing project, the new park will serve as an important circulation intersection and a public space where local residents enjoy greenery, activities, building up their sense of belonging of this neighborhood. Therefore the goal of the design is to meet the diverse need of the neighborhood as well as to ensure the security of the space.

The conceptual plan of the brownsville neighborhood is to provide a handicap accessable route linking available open spaces for senior citizens, to enjoy the neighborhood without obstruction. Proposed trees and bioswales along the streeet also provide ecological services and manage storm water the neighborhood.
Circulation
Design Development
1. There is a 12 feet change of elevation between the north and the south part of the site. 2. The park should serve the adjacent school and community center. 3. Accroding to the circulation analysis, the park will become an pathway connecting the north and the south. 4. The zig-zag form of the pathway allows more open views from the outside as well as inside the park.
The north part of the park is a leisure rock playground for both kids and adult. There's a lack of open space in the neighborhood therefore a plaza is designed on the south side which also serves the community center to the east of the park. The zig-zag corridor as an handicap access route provides visual contact through the north side to the south side of the park and vice versa. For planting strategy, only canopy layer and ground cover are planted. The understory layer is eliminated to maintain clear sight lines.

CO-OP vs. Public Housing
Figure Field Maps
The research reveals the segregation of neighborhood with two total different racial and income composition inside a seemingly homogenous urban fabric. The two neighborhoods, in fact, have different sense of place identity. Such segregation is so sharp that one can tell the difference just by walking from block to block. There lacks spatial agencies that provide opportunities for more conversations and they has the potentials to remediate the gap.
