Welcome to the 2013 NILE

A message from Jay Nansel, NILE President

A message from Justin Mills, NILE General Manager

Welcome to the 46th annual Northern International Livestock Exposition. It has been a pleasure to serve as President with such a hard working staff, board of directors, members and community supporters of the NILE. It takes a coordinated effort from staff and volunteers to produce the quality Stock Show and Rodeo that we have all become accustom to. Expect nothing but the best again in 2013.

I am excited in welcoming you to be a part of this year's NILE Stock Show & Rodeo! I am proud of the rich tradition that we have with this event as one of the "premier" Stock Shows and Rodeos in the country. This year we have expanded the show by one day as entry numbers have grown tremendously. We work hard to provide a well-run, professional show with the touch of our western hospitality and genuine care of all our exhibitors.

The livestock shows will once again be abundant. All you need to do is walk into the Metra Park Expo building and this will be quickly apparent. After bursting at the seams with cattle last year, we found it necessary to add an additional day to accommodate all the breed entries. We couldn’t be happier with the growth. Along with the livestock shows, most breeds will also have a sale. Other events in the Expo building include the Club Calf Prospect Show and Sale. Many 4-H and FFA projects are started at this event. Another event is the very popular Merit Heifer Show. This program matches regional breeders and young people in a scholarship program like none other. Check it out at www.thenile.org. When you don’t find a cattle show going on the Expo building check out the trade show venders. This is where you will find the latest in agricultural products and much more.

Billings, Montana is a wonderful city that has been our home for 46 years. We rely heavily on the business in the community and region to support this event. I encourage you to support these sponsors while you are in Billings and thank them for their support. Over the week of the NILE there will be a wide variety of events and activities for everyone. We will feature 11 breeds of livestock with both Open and Youth shows. Addiontally will be the Club Calf Show and Sale as well as the Merit Heifer Show. Back again this year will be the Supreme Show, as we crown the over-all Supreme Bull and Supreme Femaie. Finally, the Jr. Fed Show & Sale provides an excellent way for the youth to showcase their hard work throughout the year and for businesses to support them at the Sale of Champions. The NILE Gold Buckle Horse Sales & Futurities continue to offer the region's most outstanding set of horses for buyers. The Futurities continue to grow and add a great component to the week's horse events. For several years we offered two futurities for NILE Horse Sale buyers. Now buyers are able to bring their horses back and compete in the following futurities: Yearling, Snaffle Bit (2-Yr), 3-Yr Old, 4-Yr Old, and Barrel Racing Futurity.

The Montana Pavilion will again be home for the Junior Fed Show. Come out and support the region’s youth that work so hard on their beef, sheep and hog projects. The payoff for these great kids will be the Sale of Champions. As you see, the NILE is all about our youth and agriculture. This could not be displayed any better than through our 4th Grade Ag Education program. This program starts the week off with as many as 2,000 area students getting a taste of where their food comes from.

The NILE has long been renown as one of the region's greatest rodeos. This year you will again have the opportunity to experience the NILE Ranch Rodeo Finals as well as three days of ProRodeo. The Ranch Rodeo Finals is sanctioned with the WRCA, which allows our winning team to compete in the World Finals. Our rodeo will feature Ranch Teams from all across the Northern tier of the United States. The NILE ProRodeo continues to be one of the most exciting indoor events anywhere. From a spectacular opening to a fast paced rodeo that features world class contestants and over four stock contractors. You will not want to come to Billings and not take a chance to see our rodeo.

For all the horse enthusiasts, you have not been forgotten. Our horse committee puts on the NILE Gold Buckle Horse Sales and Futurities. These sales continue to grow because the quality here is second to none. Rodeo! We have the best, starting out with the NILE Ranch Rodeo Finals. The teams qualify through their local sanctioned ranch rodeo. If you haven’t attended this event, I would encourage you to do so as you will not be disappointed. The rest of the week will feature the NILE PRCA Rodeo. Simply put, the best of the best (cowboys and livestock).

Finally, the Western Expo will be a part of the week as it provides a wide range of commercial exhibits from clothing, saddle & tack, and home décor to livestock equipment and much more. Included is the Cowboy Code Stage featuring free daily entertainment. The Young Guns Zone is back with Mutton Busting, Pony Rides, Stick Horse Rodeo and more. Plus, an expanded section for those that enjoy horses call Horse Haven. Horse Haven will feature several clinicians and demonstrations as well as a small trade show and Stallion Row.

Now if this is not enough to keep you busy, the NILE works hard bring a great Western Expo Trade Show located in the lower part of the Rimrock Auto Arena building. This features a wide variety of commercial exhibits to surely impress all interests. I again look forward to welcoming all participating in the 46th annual Northern International Livestock Exposition. Enjoy!

Join us this year, Oct. 15-19 for the one and only, NILE Stock Show and Rodeo!

Horse Hoof Harmony

2013 Horse Haven

So what is horse hoof harmony? Horse hoof harmony isn’t about hoof care; it isn’t about the latest fad shoeing, trim method or lameness issues. It deals with how to stay safe when handling your horse’s feet and methods to get the most cooperation from your horse while doing your daily inspection of the horses’ feet and most importantly stay safe! If you will, it is a self-defense course to keep you protected from the horse you are working on. Horse Hoof Harmony will teach you to become more aware of how to escape serious injury while holding a horse for the farrier or performing preventive maintenance on the feet and legs. Many times people will struggle to get a horse’s leg picked up or get themselves positioned into a extremely dangerous situation while working on the ground with an animal that can be 6 times your size and with an independent mind. The quickness of a horse exceeds any that a human has. Jim Rennie’s unique background as a farrier, horseman and martial artist in Judo lends to a fresh new way to look at preventing catastrophic injury to people when dealing with horse leg and foot care. Jim will show you how to be able to pick your horses’ legs up with greater ease. How to work with colts to get them ready for the unnatural act of hoof care will be demonstrated as well. Tips on working with your farrier before and during their visit will be discussed and demonstrated as well. The NILE has been in Jim’s blood since 1967 when he rode along with his Grandfather Joe Rennie who was a herdsman for the Wagon Box Hereford ranch south of Sheridan, Wy. At the age of 3 he stayed in the stock truck on a bed of hay bales for the duration of the NILE to help Grandpa Joe tend to Hereford Bulls. Jim has been shoeing and trimming horses since 1983. Both grandfathers and father shod horses. He entered his first horse show when he was 9 and broke his first horse in seventh grade. At the time Jim was chastised at horse shows for using Ray Hunt methods by horse show judges and others as it was a new concept during the mid 70’s.

Colt Starting Demonstrations Charlie Hanson will start a green colt and break it to ride in the Colt Starting Demonstrations. He will select the two-year-old colt out of three colts provided by local breeder, Carrie Hawkins. Within an allotted amount of time, Charlie will work the colt and get it ready to ride. On Saturday, the second day of demonstrations, Charlie will reinforce what he taught the colt and then take the colt through a course with obstacles, resembling ranch work.

Charlie is a 57 y/o rancher from Arlee, Mt and a very accomplished horseman. He first became interested in training horses as a young man. For the last 13 years Charlie has provided training and schooling on all ages of horses with a wide range of discipline needs and problems. Charlie also does several clinics each year giving horse owners and riders help with problems and horsemanship. See following page for schedule of Horse Haven Demos 11

2013 Horse Haven

Bridleless Horse Demonstrations

Jacqueline Richey has trained and shown Quarter Horses, Arabians and POAs for 45 years. She started giving lessons at age 10. Her first clinic was with Tom Dorrance! Jacqueline qualified the POA World Championships and numerous Quarter Horse Youth Division AllAround awards. Jacqueline’s mentors include her great friend Aimee Brimhall-McCord who she owes much respect, gratitude and love in her journey with horses. Other mentors Jacqueline has studied with include: Pat Parelli, Ronnie Willis, Leon Harrell (World Champion Cutter), Craig Johnson (World Champion Reiner), Walter Zettle (Respected dressage teacher, trainer), Dr. Robert Miller DVM (Father of Imprint Training in foals), and Jack Brainard (Western Dressage). Jacqueline has assisted veterinarians in embryo floating and artificial insemination of mares. She has managed performances horse stables with oversight of foaling, imprinting and young horse development. Three Oldenburg stallions that Jacqueline foaled, imprinted and trained for two years went on to take 1st and 3rd and the Devon Horse Show (oldest outdoor multi-breed horse show in the US). Jacqueline’s training goal is to achieve a human-horse bond that is as strong as the bond between horses! Regardless of your equine discipline (dressage, jumping, reining, trail riding, etc.), a stronger bond with your horse translates into greater levels of performance and a richer experience for both horse and rider. Through the training techniques of herd dynamics, Jacqueline will give you the tools to understand and transform unwanted behavior into a relationship where horses seek your company and direction with exuberance!

2013 Horse Haven Stallion Row

Here’s a sneak peek at a couple of the Stallions that will be showcased in Stallon Row on October 18-19, 2013.

Laredo Moon: Owned by Thunderbrook Tennessee Walkers Laredo Moon is our buckskin son of Travelers Moon Frost. Laredo is a registered buckskin Tennessee Walking Horse. Laredo has old time breeding going back to Roy Roger’s Trigger Jr. twice (Allen’s Gold Zephyr). His pedigree is a great cross between old western walking horses and old World Grand Champions and his color is just a plus.Laredo has a very natural gait. He performs several gaits including walk, running walk, rack, & canter which all are attributed to the Tennessee Walkers. He also has been taught to trot on cue which is used during his ranch duties on our 20,000 acre cattle ranch south of Miles City.Laredo is a very gentle and loving stallion. He is quite and honest in his work ethic, he is gentle enough for kids to ride and inexperienced riders. Laredo has proven to be very versatile. He has done everything from ranch work to showing in open shows to ranch rodeos to parades. Laredo willing performs all tasks of ranch work. He loves to work cattle. In the show circuit, Laredo was shown in Halter, Bareback Equitation, Trail Classes, Ranch Horse Class, Barrel Racing, Pole Bending and the Flag Race. Another one of his great qualities is he has a ground covering running walk.Laredo’s foals have dispositions that are hard to beat and all gait naturally. They also have great conformation.Laredo stands 15.2 hands. So if you want a great minded foal that has a super smooth gait that can go any direction, Laredo is the stallion for your mare. For more information please check out our website at www.thunderbrooktwh.com

Illusion Farm’s Tuff Hedeman, aka Doc- Shire: Owned by Big Sky Shires & Equine Services Doc can hammer out a trot with the best of them-- this boy can move and is passing it on to his progeny. The versatility that this horse has is remarkable- and most of that comes from the mind and disposition that is unbeatable. He already has several foals on the ground and has proven himself in the breeding shed. He is shipping high quality semen and settling all live cover mares. Impressive numbers for a young stallion. Doc is showing potential in cross bred and full shire matings. He is well balanced with an excellent foundation in his legs and feet-- he shows great length of hip, is very balanced and is very eye appealing. He shows great athletic ability and is passing that on. Doc is adding good clean hocks, solid feet, bone, disposition, conformation and movement to his get. Here is a chance to have great movement with solid conformation, exceptional disposition and correct foundation. Exceptional personality has attracted us to this horse. He is very kind and easy to handle. Doc never flinched or acted up in anyway when first hitched and harnessed- great start for this horse. He shows all the great attributes of his pedigree. His linage speaks of quality and royalty. Look at the closeness of Cowerslane Concorde- who produced high quality horses with good feet and minds and then Garreg William- a stallion who has stamped his mark on the industry producing some of the best horses in the business. Doc was tested through UC-Davis for his coat color genetics spring of 2009. He is EE/aa or homozygous black. You can not get a sorrel foal. 13

NILE Gold Buckle Futurities Any horse sold through the 2012 NILE Gold Buckle Select Weanling/Yearling Horse Sale is eligible to show in the 2013 Futurities. Yearlings who sold in 2012 come back in 2013 to complete the NILE’s Two-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Futurity. Horses not sold through a NILE Sale may still be eligible to compete in the Two, Three, and Four-Year-Old Futurities if they are sired by a nominated stallion. The total purse for these futurities pays 25 percent to the breeder and 75 percent to the owner.

NILE Gold Buckle Futurities

The NILE Gold Buckle Select Horse Sales are conducted and managed by a committee whose members have a variety of experience in the equine industry. The mission is to hold sales where breeders, trainers, and exhibitors can market high-quality horses to buyers from all over the United States and Canada. A few have even been sold to foreign countries. The sale horses have been selected by the sale committee and screened by Jeff Peila, DVM just prior to the sale. Every effort is made to sell only the top quality horses out of those consigned.

The Horse Sale Committee feels that with Lynn Weishaar, auctioneer, John Johnson handling the pedigrees, and the crew of professional ringmen, every consignor has optimum opportunity to sell his/her horse for the highest dollar on that given day. A special thanks should be given to the Horse Sale Committee, Ward, Lynn, John, the ring crew and the NILE staff for all the hard work that goes into making these sales so successful.

Sale Terms & Conditions Sale Management acts as mediator only. Although NILE does a pre-sale screening with a veterinarian, NILE makes no guarantee, either written or verbal. All horses (with no stated guarantees) sell “as is” with any and all responsibilities and guarantees strictly between the buyer and the seller. Each horse on which there are two or more bids will be sold to highest bidder. Auctioneer settles disputes and his decision is final. Announcements from the block take precedence over printed and other announcements. Every effort has been made to assure catalog correctness, but NILE assumes no liability for errors or omissions or for statements, verbal or written, regarding horse(s) sold. Catalog comments are provided by seller. Payment terms of the sale are cashiers check, certified check, travelers check, or personal check, with picture ID, and/or any bank letter of guarantee, in U.S. funds only, payable within 1/2 hour after sale. Sorry, no credit cards. There is a $30.00 charge per returned check. Any collection costs (and attorney’s fees) shall be paid by the buyer. Upon payment, cashier will issue a delivery order which must be in buyer’s possession to leave grounds. Buyer pays brand inspection fee. Certificate of Registration and transfer will be mailed to the buyer. All horses will be sold in accordance with Montana auction laws. Title passes to the purchaser at the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, at which time the purchaser assumes the responsibility for risk of injury and liability of horse. Any injury or loss of said horse(s) or change in horse’s condition occuring after the fall of the hammer, but before making final settlement or taking final delivery as set forth herein, shall not be grounds for recision of the sale. The purchaser or his agent may take care, custody and/or control of the horse immediately at fall of the hammer, but such taking shall not constitute delivery of the horse. Delivery shall be made only after the purchaser presents himself to NILE cashier and pays purchase price in full. Purchasers who make final settlement shall be tendered delivery in the form of a “release” for the horse, which allows purchaser or his agent to obtain a brand inspection to remove horse from grounds. All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The sellers, NILE Sale Management, directors, staff, membership, sponsors, and volunteers, as well as MetraPark and Yellowstone County, assume no reponsibility, legal or otherwise, for any and all liabilities for loss, damage, theft, death or injury to livestock, persons, or property.

She has a number of ancestors in the Legend Series of Western Horseman books. She has been a dream to work with and she should have the size, depth and bone to handle a lot of wet saddle blankets or look very impressive in a show halter. A definite futurity prospect. I can’t say enough good about this horse; I hate selling him but I have too many young ones coming up. I bought him as a yearling in Nebraska and have used him for ranch work, some outside roping, dragging calves to the fire, starting colts, moving bulls; you can shoot and handle a whip off him. He’s helped break horses to lead, been packed and led pack strings. Gentle for anyone that can ride but really comes alive when the action starts. He has never bucked but is high energy and may get away from a novice rider. Big and stout- 15.2, 1260 lbs. Catch him anywhere, even out of other horses and lead him home beside the pickup.

“Keno” is a beautiful palomino ranch gelding. He stands 15.3 and weighs 1,250. He is smart as well as stout. Keno has a great walk and he does well on the trail. He has pushed and sorted cattle and really knows how to cover ground. He is well suited for an intermediate rider. Keno shoes, trailers, and bathes with ease.

Nice 16-year-old black mare, very aggressive and catty horse, fun to ride, would be suitable for someone looking for a step up level horse. Neva has competed in all levels of barrel racing from Junior High, High School, College, and MBHA. She runs in the 1D and 2D divisions in barrels and 21’s and 22’s in poles. This mare is a high energy horse that does not require a lot of practice runs, is very seasoned so runs pretty much the same every time.

Barrel racers take note. Smooth Movin Victory is a natural. He was started on the barrels in February and has been competing some this summer. Currently is clocking less than 1 second off the competition and is just cruising through the pattern. He will inhale the first barrel. This horse is very talented and plenty fast enough to be a 1d horse within a short time. He has been ridden on the ranch, sorting, shipping, and gathering. He is very quiet and easy to get along with. He is the first one to meet you at the gate, safe and quiet enough for more novice riders, but has tons of talent.

Looks, breeding, talent and speed, Lacy has it all. She can go from the barrel pen with the big dogs and to the heeling pen and chase them down, has also been used in youth rodeos too. Lacy could be a 1/2D barrel horse with the right rider. She is a jam up heel horse, is quick and catty. She is great all round for kids at walk trot, would work with a more advanced youth too. Loves going and moving cows, she clips, bathes, loads and is good to shoe.

Macho Man is a sweet, kind, young, flashy gelding that has done all the ranch chores. He is well broke, very soft in the bridle, and has a quiet temperament. He has been started on the barrel pattern, and roped the hot heels. By sale time he could be much farther along as he is very willing. This is one of those horses anybody will get along with and he can go any direction. Bred for speed but quiet enough for western pleasure, he stands 14.3 and would be the perfect size for all members of the family. If you are looking for one horse to go to the hills, the showpen, the rodeo, and babysit novice riders, he is the one.

We’ve used him to sort and move pairs, check and tag calves, drag calves, and head and heel in the branding trap this last spring. He is cowy, athletic and intelligent with a kind and willing attitude. He is going well in the arena, knows his leads, sidepasses, has a good stop and a natural turnaround.
