I’m excited to welcome everyone to join us for our Annual Production Sale on April 22 at the farm in Kingston, Georgia. It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year. We’ve been so blessed this past year; Tammy and I have received news we’ll be grandparents as Colin and Cassidy are expecting a girl in August. Also, this summer Tyler and Taylor will be expecting their first child in July.

Tyler and the team here have worked very hard to get to this place, and it’s an offering we are extremely excited to present on sale day. These are the fruits of tremendous labor following our passion to produce sound, functional and phenotypically pleasing cattle. We work hard to cover all the bases when we breed these cattle and strive to pick matings that complement, improve on their genetics and never single-trait select.

We added Poss Ratified to our herd sire lineup last spring and have been extremely pleased with the first calves that he has produced. You will see the best of those in this offering, and I believe you will agree he’s done a great job. The Summation daughters in production now are continuing to prove themselves as tremendous cows of strong maternal characteristics and growth.

I can’t believe it’s been a year since the last Katie Colin Farm Production Sale. I feel this program has made as much progress in one year as any other in the nation, and you will see that in this offering. I feel this one is stout! Matt and I have enjoyed working with Greg and his team at Katie Colin Farm, and we are excited about how this program is stacking up in this competitive Angus marketplace and are even more excited about the future. Greg and his family have been assembling registered Angus genetics for over 17 years now, and Greg has become a student of the business who loves to focus on cow families, phenotype, performance, carcass, structural correctness, and as always feet first. I feel this is very important as you see so many breeders just breeding numbers instead of making complementary matings to improve phenotype and structure, and as well numbers.

We start this year’s sale off with one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. This Lot 1 Salvation daughter has a big growth spread, awesome feet scores, elite marbling, a top of the breed $C along with a phenotype that you cannot poke a hole in. From the famed Rita cow family, this one is destined for greatness. Lot 2 is a sister to last year’s top selling lot, and this two-year-old is doing it right. I’m very excited about the future of her Salvation daughter that sells as Lot 2B. Lot 3 is an awesome Maverick daughter out of the famed Erianna tribe and this one is what the program is all about, moderate, stout, soft sided and good with top 1% EPD profile. Lot 4 will make your mouth water. This Summation daughter back to the famed 8809 is flat as good as you can make a young cow. Lot 5 is the full sister to Surpass and is a beast, and Lot 7 is a very unique outcrossed pedigree female that really intrigues me. I’m extremely excited about the fall ETs, and my favorite weaned heifers when we pictured were Lots 12, 13 and 14. The yearlings are deep, and my favorite is Lot 15. There’s a really powerful set of bred heifers that are highlighted by Lots 21, 22, 23B, 24A and 26. Lots 32 and 33 are elite proven donors, and the fall pairs are highlighted by Lot 35 with her +422 $C Ratified son. Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

GROWTH

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.

Dry Matter Intake (DMI), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

MATERNAL

Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

MANAGEMENT EPDs

Claw Set EPD (Claw), is expressed in units of claw-set score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal claw set. The ideal claw set is toes that are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced.

Foot Angle EPD (Angle), is expressed in units of foot-angle score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle. The ideal is a 45-degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth.

Pulmonary arterial pressure EPD (PAP), is expressed in millimeters of Mercury (mmHg), with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire should produce progeny with a lower PAP score. PAP score is an indicator of susceptibility to high altitude disease commonly experienced at elevations greater than 5,500 feet. Selection for this trait aims to improve the genetic potential for a sire’s progeny to have lower PAP scores thus a lower chance of contracting high altitude disease increasing the environmental adaptability of cattle living in mountain areas.

CARCASS

The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, Ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis.

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

ANGUS-ON-DAIRY $VALUE INDEXES

Angus-On-Dairy $Value Indexes are bioeconomic selection indexes that allow multiple change in several different traits at once pertaining to a dairy-beef crossbreeding objective. These values are terminal crossbreeding indexes to estimate of how future beef-on-dairy progeny of each Angus sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to beef-ondairy progeny of other Angus sires if the sires were randomly mated and beef-on-dairy calves were exposed to the same environment.

These indexes were designed as specific crossbreeding tools for Angus bulls being mated to dairy cows. Two indexes have been developed for the dairy market:

Angus-On-Holstein ($AxH), a terminal index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetic traits weighted by appropriated economics of each Angus sire when mated to Holstein females. The underlying breeding objective assumes Angus bulls will be mated to Holstein females to produce Angus-dairy crossbred calves to be fed and marketed on a quality-based grid. Traits included are as follows: calving ease, growth from birth through the feeding phase, feed intake, dressing percent, yield grade, quality grade, muscling, and height.

Angus-On-Jersey ($AxJ), a terminal index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetic traits weight by appropriated economics of each Angus sire when mated to Holstein females. The underlying breeding objective assumes Angus bulls will be mated to Jersey females to produce Angus-dairy crossbred calves to be fed and marketed on a quality-based grid. Traits included are as follows: calving ease, growth from birth through the feeding phase, feed intake, dressing percent, yield grade, quality grade, and muscling.

$VALUE INDEXES

$Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

Combined Value ($C), expressed in dollars per head, is an index which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. EPDs directly influencing a combined index are: CED, CEM, WW, YW, Milk, HP, DOC, MW, Angle, Claw, DMI, Marb, CW, RE and Fat.
