The LaFollette family welcomes you to our annual bull sale. It seems like yesterday I was writing last year’s welcome. As I put pen to paper, I can’t help but think about how blessed we have been this last year, and I never feel like we deserve any of it. My Grandad was an immigrant from Austria. His uncle paid for him and his cousin to escape to America when Hitler invaded their hometown. He never did speak great English but he had a funny, sarcastic saying “The dumber the farmer, the bigger the Potata!” I can still hear him say it years after his passing. I sometimes feel like this saying fits us. It seems like the Good Lord Blesses us way beyond what our intelligence should allow. There is no doubt, while we try and do our best every day by using the most up to date technology available and management practices that we know will help us raise the highest quality, balanced seedstock we can offer. If we were raising potatoes, this year’s crop would be giant ones. We couldn’t be more excited to offer this year’s crop of bulls to you. From last calving season to today, these bulls have hit it out of the park. They came easy, they weaned great, their health has been awesome and they have performed better than we could have hoped. Developing the bulls on “the Hill” has kept their feet perfect and made them strong and athletic. 92.5% of the bulls received a RightChoice badge and with the implementation of RightMate, next year’s offering will be even better genomically.

We will sell full possession and full semen interest in all Bulls unless otherwise noted in the sale book. Black Summit will reserve the right to collect semen, for in program use only, at the buyer’s convenience and seller’s expense. Terms of the sale are cash and all cattle become property of the buyer at the time of sale. All animals will be sold in accordance with the Suggested Sale Terms and Conditions of the American Simmental Association unless other terms are stated in this catalog. All announcements made sale day take precedence over printed material in this catalog or other printed material associated with this sale. All cattle will be registered with the American Simmental Association and those papers will be transferred after the sale. Please note all EPDs will change between the time this catalog is printed and the day of the sale. All EPDs in the catalog will be current as of the day they are printed. Owners, their agents or any of the sale staff will not be held responsible for any personal injury, loss or accident while attending this sale.

BREEDING GUARANTEE

All bulls selling in the sale have passed a Complete Breeding Soundness Exam. However, all bulls should still be rechecked as close to turnout as possible. All bulls are guaranteed for fertility and genetic soundness for their first breeding season. If the bull is proven to be a non-breeder for fertility or a genetically caused soundness condition, we will replace the bull with a satisfactory replacement or issue credit of the purchase price minus the salvage value to be used in future sales. This guarantee does not cover injury, infectious disease, mismanagement, neglect and/or death. We ask that you contact us immediately before culling or disposing of the bull should anything occur. A signed veterinary statement and/or BSE form will be required. Bulls are not guaranteed to freeze semen unless an agreement is reached prior to the sale.

TRUCKING / FEEDING OPTIONS

• Option 1 - $100 off bulls hauled home the weekend of the sale.

• Option 2 - Bulls delivered to Wyoming and surrounding states for free. We will begin coordinating free delivery the week after the sale.

• Option 3 - Bulls may be kept free of charge past their scheduled delivery date at buyer’s request. They may be picked up at the buyer’s convenience on or before April 1. Bulls kept past April 1 will be charged $3 per head per day.

• Option 4 - We will work with buyers of bulls that do not qualify for free delivery. We will help as much as possible to get these bulls delivered as inexpensive as we can.

We are eagerly awaiting the 2023 Black Summit Cattle Company annual bull sale. This is the best set of bulls the LaFollette family has offered yet! The LaFollette’s have taken a very balanced breeding approach with a goal of producing correct made, sound, high performing cattle that work in western environments all while trying to improve end product merit for their customers calves. They have not chased extremes and are breeding cattle that will work for the long haul for their commercial customers. They are also working very hard to provide marketing avenues for their commercial customers calves to help them achieve top dollar for their genetic investments. What does “Good Cattle” mean to you?

Traveling as a college judging coach and a seedstock producer you get the opportunity to visit a lot of great operations and pick the brains of the best cattleman this country has to offer. It’s always been interesting to me how many different meanings the phrase “Good Cattle” can have. The term is used totally different by the guy that just Ave $7000 on his 200 hd bull sale from the feedlot owner that’s feeding a pen of steers that are converting like champions. Even a bigger contrast might be between the show cattle guy that just won Denver and the Grass and cake guy that wants his cows no bigger than a 1000 lbs and can live on sage brush and rabbit tracks. Amazingly enough the saying is applicable, in it’s varying meanings, to all these guys for different reasons. Each one feels like their kind of “Good Cattle” are the key to profitability.

I ask why “Good Cattle” have to be one or another?

• Why can’t we raise cattle that are structurally sound, big footed and good moving that can cover country and breed cows?

• Why can’t we raise cattle that are 3 dimensional enough in their build to grow, convert feed and kill like “good cattle “can?

• Why can’t we raise cattle that are built good enough to look like “good cattle” do and maternal enough to stay in the herd like “Good Cattle” should?

Sam is a 6 year-old grade Border Collie male. Sam has done every aspect of ranch work including moving yearlings, dry cows, bulls and pairs. Has worked new born pairs to older calves on cows. Has been used to load cattle in trailers out in the pasture to pairing out in the spring. Will work from a side-by-side, a foot and horse back. Very loyal dog, easy to be around and good with other dogs. Has seem a lot of miles and slowed down a bit but still has a lot of work left in him. He is not a dog that needs to be micromanaged. ASA QUICK REFERENCE TO EPDS, INDEXES AND $VALUES

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDS): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. $ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
