Although no one really knows what 2021 sale season will bring, we will have our sale on March 12, 2021 in our sale barn, at the ranch. At the time of printing our sale catalogue, we’re leaning towards a video sale. With the removal of the handling system in the back of the barn, this will allow us to double our capacity. Hopefully by sale time, we’ll start to see the light at the end of the tunnel with covid restrictions. Once again, the sale will be broadcast with DLMS.ca. Please register ahead of the sale to bid, if you can’t attend sale day. We have a lot of confidence in our group of bulls on offer. They are backed by some great cow families. Most are sired by home raised bulls. Several in fact, that have sold through our sale in previous years, to both purebred and commercial producers. We feel this is the most consistent set of bulls yet. Also are two new sire groups. Both bulls are backed with strong cow families with longevity. B U L L D E V E L O P M E N T: We don’t creep feed our calves and never have. We cut calves at birth, branding, weaning and before they go to grass, as yearlings. We have no aspirations of selling “the most bulls” but we do strive to sell the best bulls out of the best cows we can raise. About 40-45% of our bull crop is offered annually in our sale. The rest make up a dandy load of curly haired, thick topped rugged steers. The yearling bulls are grown out on free choice hay, supplemented with a growing ration for a modest 3lbs/day gain. The two year olds went to grass mid May. They remained on native pasture until late September. We are really happy about the condition the bulls carried coming off grass, especially for such a dry summer. This group is easy fleshing, hard and athletic. Weaning weights were taken on Aug. 28, 2019 and Sept. 7, 2020. We do this when the calves are given their pre-weaning shots. Catalogue weights are adjusted 205 and 365 day weights adjusted by the Canadian Hereford Assoc.
E P D S & C U L L I N G: We cull our cows and bulls hard. We expect our mature cows to wean a bull calf with an adj ww of 600lbs plus. First calvers are given a little leeway. We don’t put a whole lot of emphasis on EPD’s. We print them in the catalog so buyers can compare, if they like. We feel the breed organizations push them, but don’t do a good job of explaining how to use them. Some producers use EPD’s to promote cattle as being in the top 10% of the breed for a certain trait. That’s fine. However, for example, let’s look at milk numbers. More often than not, a cow with a really high milk number will require more feed to maintain herself, her calf, along with her ability to rebreed. We’re more focused on raising cattle that thrive in ranch conditions. Let’s look at ww and yw EPD’s. Sure, we all want to sell more pounds. However, at the end of the day, we can’t wean a 1000lb calf off a 1200lb ranch cow. It’s also been our experience that a really high yw EPD can lead to a larger cow. BW EPD’s are the most applicable in our opinion, if an actual scale weight is recorded and submitted. All our calves, both purebred and commercial, are weighed with a scale. We’ve found the tape is not accurate. You’ll find our EPD’s will be around breed average. However, we feel our cows are anything but average. Our cows sure aren’t perfect, but we‘re getting closer to where we want to be every year.

Electric Express was our pick of Ulrich’s Herefords 2019 sale. We were intrigued by “Peter’s” picture in the January digest. So we made the road trip to check him and his dam out. 16E is a good footed bull with great hair, length and a big hip. He has thrown very moderate birth weights here and could be used on heifers. His dam is still in production at Ulrich’s at 13 years old.

Standard 213B was the lead off two year old bull in our 2016 sale, selling to Wilson Bros., McCord, SK. That same spring, we hand bred a couple second calvers to him before delivering him. Express 103H checks a lot of boxes, if you like them short marked with lots of performance. His dam 112E, is a granddaughter of our 155S donor cow. 112E is destined to be a great one. Heavy Hitter’s dam hit another one out of the park. This guy will do it all. Sire performance and build a cow herd. He’s backed by some of the best cows we’ve ever raised. His dam 168C, grandam 179Y and great grandam 155S are all donor cows here. These cattle are consistent. Heavy Hitter’s full brother, Gunsmoke 126G won Dam BR 15Z Lady ET 168C the 2019 Hardisty field day, against over 160 of Western Canada’s best Hereford bull calves. Gunsmoke also topped last years sale, selling to Mrnak Herefords, North Dakota. His maternal grandsire, Crossover 135C won the 2015 Hardisty field day and topped our sale. Here’s a cow maker, out of the great 179Y herself. He is one of the quietest bulls in the group. Super deep bodied with a perfect foot under him. A little extra chrome on this guy but don’t let that deter you.
