Welcome to our 2023 Bull Sale

We would like to invite you to the 13th annual P&H Ranching Charolais and Circle G Simmentals & Angus Bull sale. Last year’s bull sale was a banner year for us and we would sincerely like to thank our repeat buyers for their continued support and trust in our breeding programs. To all the new buyers that came out and invested in our genetics, we are grateful you chose us. Whether it is at our annual bull sale or purchases made off the farm your patronage is greatly appreciated.

2022 presented us all with challenges; the rising cost of inputs, inflation, and the steady climbing interest rates. The weather didn’t take a back seat either, many farms and ranches saw some significant amounts of moisture early on, but as the summer progressed it seemed the tap turned off and the drought conditions returned. Here, we went from dried out to drowned out and back to dried out with 3 good size bouts of hail. This is something we don’t often see in our area and hope not to see again for a very long time. There was however light at the end of the tunnel and we did manage to round up enough feed to hopefully get us through to grass. It was a blessing to see higher calf prices last fall. Futures predict higher-than-normal prices for a few years to come. Let’s cross our fingers.

P&H has always concentrated on marketing 2-year-old bulls, which can sometimes be a bit taxing. Having all that testosterone around the yard causes all sorts of issues. So, we look forward to moving them out to grass from June to October. It gives us a bit of a break and they get the exercise to grow and muscle up. Later in the summer, they are supplemented with free choice hay. Around mid-September, they are started on a screening pellet. November, we start them on a TMR of silage, hay, and some of the screening pellets or feed grain. We don’t believe in the hard push from the time they are babies. The rations and pasture are meant to grow the bulls, not to finish them. It is this practice that generates longevity. As much as I like to sell bulls it is always a proud moment when our customers say how long our bulls last. Our focus remains the same; we are committed to producing quality, affordable genetics that will positively influence the profitability of the commercial cattleman. This group of bulls will get out and cover ground, breed cows and sire calves with loads of performance all without sacrificing calving ease. To assist you with the selection of your bulls we have provided up-to-date EPD numbers and ultrasound carcass data. These are effective tools to aid in the selection of your bull purchases but we must not forget the importance of structural soundness and phenotype.

Garth Cutler of Circle G Simmentals and Angus, as always, will bring to town an exceptional set of yearling bulls. His ongoing commitment to selecting superior genetics to pass on to his customer base is second to none and it will certainly show in the group of bulls he has on offer. This year there will be a very select ranch horse consignment. The quality of the horses is impeccable. Many hours are put into training a good ranch horse and this year’s offering demonstrates just that. I encourage interested buyers to contact the owners and talk to them about their consignment.

Expected Progeny Differences...EPDs are a selection tool that provides estimates of the genetic value an animal will pass on to its progeny. They can be used to help ensure that you find the best bull for your needs and long term breeding goals.

EPD EXPLANATION

BW: Birth Weight - a prediction of sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny...a lower value indicates lighter BW.

CE: Calving Ease - A higher value indicates increased calving ease.

WW: Weaning Weight – predictor of sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny.

YW: Yearling Weight – predictor of sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny.

MCE: Maternal Calving Ease - Indicates the ease which a sire’s daughters calve...a higher value indicates higher calving ease.

is a super clean-fronted bull with that curly hair that is so desired. He has a very long back which certainly contributes to his above-average WW & YW epds. He travels well on a big foot.

This young man checks all the boxes. Moderate birth weight, heavy WW, substantial YW with a good disposition. His mother is one of the deepest-bodied, wide topped cows in our herd. It looks like he has inherited his mother’s thickness.

23J is one of those calves that always caught your eye in the pasture. He has a moderate frame that is full of meat and muscle. He ranks in the top 10% for WW and top 15% for YW epds. BW: 103 lbs Adj 205: 769 lbs WPDA: 3.71 365: 1235 lbs

EPD’S

24J comes from the same great cow family as lot 2. He has exceptional depth of body with great spring of rib. His carcass numbers are above average with emphasis on his marbling score. To top it off, 24J is extremely docile.

Definitely one of the longest backed bulls in the sale. That extra length will add more lbs at weaning time.

We only have a few sons of Eaton’s General Lee and this guy packs quite a punch. Great carcass

This is the youngest bull in the sale but it never set him back at all. He has a 116 weaning ratio and sports a WPDA at weaning of 4.43 lbs. He moves out well with a great foot shape.

117J ranks in the top 10% for WW, top 15% for YW and top 10% for marbling epds. He is a full brother to the very popular lot 25 in last year’s sale that was the high seller going to C.Sparrow Farms.

A long deep body on this guy with lots of eye appeal. 42J is a maternal brother to the bull that sold in last year’s sale to Terry, Donna, and Ryan Dodd.

36J comes from a tan cow family. As a calf on grass he certainly caught your eye because of his great body type; stout and lots of muscle.

45J is a moderate birth weight bull with smooth shoulders. He is above average for WW, YW, Marbling and REA epds; all that and a great disposition.

JRS Trophy 88T - Many sons carry the maternal influence of Trophy. His daughters exemplify superior Charolais character.

Deep-bodied and a good size REA. 21J is the 6th son to sell from our good old 78W cow. We also have 3 top notch daughters working in the herd. Good fertility and longevity in this cow family.

It’s hard to judge these younger bulls when you are selecting bulls to keep for the next year’s sale; 115J has not disappointed me. He has shown great performance since he came in from summer pasture.

101J is a big-ribbed, stout bull. Moderate framed and well-balanced from front to end. He has above average WW and YW epds.

“Well-balanced” and “long bodied” are terms that come to mind when I look at this bull. 47J had a half-brother sell to Hiway 21 Feeders.

A good son of General Lee that is smooth made with above average marbling. Ranks in the top 5% for WW and the top 10% for YW, Marbling and REA edps. His mother has a top-notch udder and milks great. Total maternal epd in the top 4% of the breed.

Moderate birth weight bull that should work well on 2nd calving cows.

This calf was a bit short on milk coming from a 12-year-old cow and a later birthdate, but I saw potential in him as a yearling despite that fact. Smaller framed bull.

GWelcome to the 2023 edition of our bull sale. First and foremost, we extend a huge thank you to all our buyers over the past year. Whether it be our many valued, longterm customers or first-time buyers, the support shown Corinne and myself is very gratifying. We truly appreciate this loyalty and understand the degree of trust you place in us when you invest in our bulls. We take pride in offering high quality genetics and standing behind our product.

On December 12 I followed through on the difficult decision that had been made to streamline the operation to one breed to reduce the workload. The Black Angus Female Dispersal made for a very busy fall but the cattle were certainly appreciated and it was a great sale. This sale will be your last opportunity to source a Circle G Black Angus bull. Those that viewed the Black Angus females raved about their ease of fleshing and uniformity as well as the foot and udder quality of the cattle. This has been achieved, in both breeds, by culling ruthlessly for those traits. I also utilize genetics that enhances calving ease, feed efficiency and carcass quality while maintaining above-average growth and performance. I believe that epds are a valuable selection tool, especially in the BW and CE traits, and pride myself on breeding cattle that look good and are functional while having excellent, balanced epd numbers...take note of the breed epd rankings listed with each sale bull. Also, this catalogue has pictures of the sale bulls’ mothers for well over half of the bulls...no one else provides this but I feel it is very valuable information that’s needed to truly evaluate the bulls and make informed buying decisions. These extra pictures make for extra work and I thank my team of Ben and Joe for all their help with picturing and everything else they do to keep this place on track.

The Circle G bulls were weaned on September 2 and ran on green feed swaths and banked grass for 2 weeks. They were then started on a silage-based TMR ration that is balanced to grow them and allow them to express their genetic performance potential without impairing their soundness and longevity. No creep feed is used through the summer and no feet are trimmed. I feel it is very important to have the weaning weights totally reflect the dam’s milking ability. The bulls were in their 10 acre field until after the Angus dispersal sale and brought into the yard on December 14 so they got plenty of exercise. There will be bigger, heavier bulls sold at sales this year but you will not find a sounder, more athletic set of bulls anywhere.

All the bulls 12 months and older by sale time will be semen tested. The bulls will return to the farm after the sale and those

bulls that haven’t been semen tested will be after they have matured more. Delivery to your farm will follow.

There are no Red Angus bulls in the sale but there are more Red Simmental bulls selling and they are an exciting set with large sire groups that offer my customers some new genetics. Note that there are numerous red bulls that will provide very similar calving ease to the Red Angus bulls that I’ve offered in the past. The sale bulls provide a wide range of bloodlines and phenotypes to suit different operations and breeding goals, and there should be a bull, or bulls, that will be a perfect match for your herd.

We hope you can be with us in Innisfail on sale day, but for those unable to attend, we are providing various options and ways for you to buy your bulls. DLMS will be onsite to handle internet bidding, our sight-unseen buying program has worked very well in the past and a very competent sales staff can assist you as well. Calving ease is a combination of a bull’s actual birth weight, his genetics (epds) and the females a bull is bred to. 50% of the equation is the management and genetics of the female. The Calving Ease Score (CE) provided is my best estimation of calving ease after evaluating the actual BW, epds, genetics and body shape of each bull.

on Bill Biglieni to look at the bull as well as his sire and mother for me. His very positive evaluation led me to bid $69,000 as the contending bidder. He sold to the good Labatte and Circle 7 operations for $70,000 and I thank Barry for allowing me to purchase one of the only two semen packages they sold. Sixteen outstanding Potent sons sell in this sale and they prove my intention to own the bull was well founded. Potent is just what his name implies. He is passing along powerful genetics and is a true herdsire.

I always have requests for some two year old bulls but rarely have any to carry over. Each year I keep a group of bulls, of both breeds, out of the sale to provide customers with backup bulls in case of failed semen tests and breeding injuries and last year these bulls were not needed. It’s great that my bulls are standing up well and now, in my last Angus bull sale, I can offer these 3 quality bulls, with a little more age, that will handle big pastures and cover more cows.

The Circle G cowherd has been culled ruthlessly for udder and foot quality, ease of fleshing and temperament. I insist on these fundamentals. The cows are not pampered and are managed similar to those of many of my commercial bull customers utilizing swath grazing and high roughage rations. 20% of their silage based winter feed is made up of straw to lower input costs and put selection pressure on the herd. Every year at least 15% of the cowherd is removed and replaced...each cow must earn the right to stay.

Ranch horse deluxe, Blue is a 10-year-old blue roan gelding that stands 15.1 hh. Blue has been used on the ranch doctoring yearlings and dragging calves to the fire. He is athletic and strong and really watches a cow.

A nice, quiet gelding anyone can get along with; he would be great for your wife or your kids to go for a ride or do a day’s work on him.

Radar is a stout made 9 year old draft quarter horse cross gelding I have used for all ranch chores. Radar is put together really nice, with lots of bone and substance. He has been used to drag calves to the fire, riding pens at the feedlot, and treating yearlings on grass. We have used Radar in the mountains, he will cross rivers and deadfall with ease. TERMS & CONDITIONS OF THIS SALE

1. TERMS – The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par in Canadian funds to the sale clerk on sale day unless otherwise previously arranged with the sellers prior to the sale. No releases will be given until satisfactory settlement has been made.

2. BIDS – Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder.

3. DISPUTES – In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matter will be final.

4. ANNOUNCEMENTS – The information contained in this catalogue is believed to be true and accurate. Announcements at the sale by the owner, auctioneer or sales management will take precedence over the printed matter is this sale catalogue.

5. PURCHASERS RISK – Each animal becomes the risk of the purchasers as soon as sold.

6. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION – The proper registration paper from the CCA, CAA and CSA will be duly transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement has been made.

7. GUARANTEE – All bulls carry the standard breeding guarantee as specified by the applicable Canadian breed Associations. Bulls are guaranteed to be structurally sound and will have passed a semen test by a qualified Veterinarian prior to sale day or delivery. In the unlikely event

of a dispute, the regular terms and conditions of the standard breed Associations will apply. At no time shall the sellers liability exceed the purchase price of the animal in question.

8. ACCIDENTS/LIABILITY– Every precaution will be made to protect the safety of those attending the sale. All persons attend the sale at their own risk. The seller, facility, owner & other persons involved with this sale assume no liability, legal or otherwise for any accidents that occur in, on or about the premises.

9. INSURANCE – Ownership risk to purchaser commences when the Auctioneer’s hammer falls. Livestock coverage will be available at the clerk’s desk from the appointed representative sale day. It is mandatory that all bulls returning to the seller’s premises be insured at the buyer’s expense.

10. DELIVERY – The sellers will deliver bulls free of charge within a 300 mile radius. Delivery beyond will be at cost. All bulls will be delivered within 30 days after the sale date.

11. P&H Ranching & Circle G Simmentals & Angus reserve the right to collect semen on any bull sold for in herd use. This semen will be collected at the buyer’s convenience and at the seller’s expense.
