LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni, Parents, Family and Friends,

As we begin our 65th year, I find myself more thankful than ever for all of the supporters who have made the hallowed halls of CBA possible for so many young men. In 1959 what was once considered a “fond wish and cherished dream” by a handful of like-minded, hardworking benefactors became a reality when 140 young men arrived on campus. They were greeted by another group of hard-working men, the De LaSalle Christian Brothers who would become their teachers, the mentors who would guide them to become “Men of Character,” ready to leave CBA with a moral compass and eager to work to make the world a better place. So began the rich journey that has persevered for more than six decades and has transformed the lives of over 12,000 young men.

In some respects the 159 acre campus those students entered appears much as it did then, a sprawling wooded expanse of land, and yet in so many ways the surroundings have changed. The main building itself has grown multiple times as a result of several campaigns and projects through the years. Additions have included many more classrooms, enhanced science labs, a theater, a second gym, a chapel, a campus store, a larger library/media center, modern guidance and administrative offices, and more. There have also been a number of changes elsewhere on campus – rowing tanks in the Sprint Barn, a tennis pavilion, a turf soccer and lacrosse field, a state-of-the-art track and field facility, multi-purpose grass athletic fields, our own on-campus cross country course, rebuilt accessory buildings for sports locker rooms, and a new admissions center. One of the most impressive improvements, of course, is the expansive new dining hall, which can serve almost twice as many students at one time. This allows for a brand new schedule, giving students more opportunities to explore their passions.

New curricular concentrations are being launched with this new schedule, in the arts (both visual and performing), business, engineering, digital media and broadcasting, and technology. Some of the renovations needed to support these new initiatives were completed over the summer, and more are planned.. Part of Henderson Hall is being recommissioned for visual arts with a new art lab and space for digital photography. Classrooms in the main building are being renovated to create a capacious maker-space to support engineering, while the library computer lab has been converted into a full Bloomberg lab with twelve terminals for our business program. A number of other spaces in the main building are being expanded and re-equipped as a music space, digital media studio, and technology classrooms for courses like coding and robotics.

Through the years, from the very first concept of building a school like CBA to the most recent curricular enhancements, none of those efforts would have been achievable without the support of our faithful donors. Your contributions send a message to our young men that you believe in the mission that is Christian Brothers Academy and value what students get from this school. For you see, although the facilities may have changed over 65 years, the one thing that will never change is our Lasallian mission to mentor Men of Character.

As we move forward into our next decade, may God continue to bless us all!

St. John Baptist de La Salle…Pray for us.

Live Jesus in our Hearts…Forever.

To the CBA Community,

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Pride in what the Academy stands for is evident in all that we do at CBA. Whether it be our commitment to Lasallian traditions and formation, our dedication to high academic standards and scholarship, our passion for athletic competition and success, and our caring for others in the community, our pride shines through. As I engage with alumni, parents, family and friends of CBA, there is a renewed sense of pride in and around campus. The transformative effect of our facilities, equally matched by our enhancements to our academic curriculum, is yielding its desired results.

Central ingredients to this success are a combination of a talented and dedicated faculty, supportive administration and staff, students eager to learn and grow, all backed by a supportive family and community committed to the mission of CBA. The results speak for themselves.

As we begin our new academic year, this is a good time to pause and reflect upon the numerous successes we have enjoyed at CBA. The sustained generosity of all those listed in this Annual Report is the fuel that makes this engine run. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, please accept our sincere gratitude for your financial support and your time and talents delivering the numerous events over the year.

We hope you will join us to celebrate 65 years of Excellence in Lasallian Education and the successful conclusion of the Forever CBA Capital Campaign on Friday, March 21, 2025 at The Shadowbrook at Shrewsbury where we can all show our pride in CBA together.

65 YEARS OF HISTORY

From its beginning, Christian Brothers Academy has developed men of faith, men of character and men of action. Early in 1958, a group of devoted laymen –George Sheehan, Peter Fleming, and John Henderson –focused on the need for an all-boys Catholic high school in Monmouth County. With the approval of Bishop George W. Ahr, they initiated a drive to raise funds for the purchase of Whitney Greentree Stables in Lincroft. The Brothers of the Christian Schools agreed to staff the school and finance its construction. The rest is history.

1959: Opening Our Doors

On September 14, 1959, the Academy opened its doors to 144 freshmen boys from the greater Monmouth County area. Eight classrooms and a “multi-purpose room” had been set up in the hastily-remodeled sixteen-stall stable now known as Henderson Hall. The new school was staffed by six Brothers and led by Principal Brother Bernard McKenna. While much was achieved in the sixteen months since the founders’ first meeting with Bishop Ahr, much more was ahead to plan for the future of a four-year high school.

1960s: Building the Foundation

The first iteration of the main school building was opened in 1961 to accommodate the three grade levels then enrolled at the Academy. The new building featured classrooms, library, cafeteria and the Varsity Gym. CBA won its first of over 150 state championships when head coach Vinnie Cox and the Colts captured the 1965 Parochial A basketball title. This championship laid the groundwork for a dominant athletic department.

1970s: Continuing Academic Growth

By the start of the 1970s, Christian Brothers Academy was firmly established, with a graduating class of nearly 200 young men each year, a faculty of 50 Brothers and lay teachers (including the school’s first female faculty members), and a strong reputation as an excellent Catholic college preparatory school. CBA was one of the first schools in the area to include computers in

its curriculum: programming and computer-assisted problem-solving were added to math courses in the 1970-71 school year. CBA’s second principal, Brother Stephen McCabe (1965-72), emphasized the importance of a rigorous curriculum, leading CBA to be nationally accredited by the Middle States Association. Brother Peter Mannion served as the Academy’s third principal from 1972 through 1979.

1980s: Expanding Programs and Facilities

By 1980, Christian Brothers Academy was firmly established in the educational landscape of Monmouth County. In 1983, the very first year in which private schools were introduced to the program, the Academy earned the National Blue Ribbon of Excellence distinction from the U.S. Department of Education. The rigorous application and selection process was spearheaded by Associate Principal Peter Santanello. Led by Principal Brother Andrew O’Gara, CBA completed its first major facilities upgrade since the original school building was constructed. Dubbed Project 80s, the $2.5 million campaign added two wings of classrooms, the chapel, a computer lab, and Henderson Theater, which opened shortly after CBA celebrated its 25th anniversary.

1990s: Focus on Strategic Planning

As enrollment exceeded 900 students at the start of the decade, Brother Ralph Montedoro, longtime teacher and administrator, took the helm as fifth CBA principal. One of Brother Ralph’s greatest accomplishments at CBA was founding the formal service program. Brother Andrew transitioned to become the Academy’s first president, overseeing all operations at CBA and focusing on fundraising, alumni outreach and facilities. CBA’s second major building addition was completed, as the $5.9 million Project 2000 upgraded the Academy’s campus facilities to better serve the student population. A new classroom wing, three state-of-the-art science labs, the McKay intramural gym with wrestling and weight training areas, two music rooms, the Academy Store, and Alumni Hall were added to the existing building.

65 YEARS OF HISTORY

65 YEARS OF HISTORY

2000s: Transitions

It was a year of transition for the CBA community, as Brother James Butler was named principal in the spring, succeeding Brother Stephen Olert. The Academy also mourned the loss of Brother Andrew O’Gara in November, who served CBA for 29 years as principal and president. In 2009, the Academy celebrated the 50th anniversary of the school’s opening. Brother Frank Byrne ’75 was appointed as school president, and kicked off one of Brother Andrew’s final goals: a $10 million capital campaign called Project 50th.

2010s: Securing our Mission

Project 50th added the Quinn Library and Media Center, a new main office, guidance office suite, two upgraded computer labs, a life sciences lab and multiple classrooms. Later, a new fitness center and locker room would finish the project.

After serving as a math teacher and later associate principal for the better part of three decades, Peter Santanello became the first lay principal of the Academy. During his time as an administrator, he was integral in CBA’s regular comprehensive self-studies and consistent high scoring on Middle States accreditation evaluations.

Santanello’s successor, Principal Ross Fales, and Associate Principal Sean Nunan ’87, led the effort to earn the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award for the second time in school history. The Academy was just one of six private high schools to earn additional distinction as an Exemplary High Performing School.

2020s: Looking Toward the Future

The most ambitious and most successful capital campaign in school history, Forever CBA: Securing Our Mission, was launched with the goal of enhancing campus facilities, as well as strengthening the school’s endowment. The $19 million campaign provided for new soccer/lacrosse and track & field complexes, a tennis pavilion, an expansive dining hall, and new admissions and business offices. The campaign also added significantly to the Academy’s endowments, with the establishment of named scholarship endowments by

major donors. The effort persevered at a time when the CBA community was also facing the challenges of maintaining in-person learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2022, Fales was appointed as CBA’s fourth president and the first lay president in school history. Fales succeeded Brother Thomas Gerrow, FSC, who served CBA as interim president after Brother Frank was appointed as auxiliary provincial of the Brothers of the Christian Schools’ District of Eastern North America in 2021. Cornelius “Neil” Begley ’96 returned to CBA as the school’s 10th principal.

Fall 2024 marks the start of Christian Brothers Academy's 65th school year, another milestone in the great history of this Lasallian institution. Our graduates – now more than 12,000 -- have taken the core pillars of character, brotherhood and achievement from the halls of the Academy and used their CBA education to become leaders and innovators for society.

Building on more than Six Decades of Academic Excellence Campus Improvements

Provide for New Evolution of Curriculum

Christian Brothers Academy is at an exciting moment in the school’s history. With the success of major capital projects over the past few years, we continue to improve CBA’s impressive 21st century campus. The culmination of these projects has enabled CBA to embark on our next evolution – adding more opportunities for students to pursue their own interests.

The recent expansion of CBA’s facilities, specifically the larger dining hall, has provided for a re-design of the school’s daily academic schedule. Beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, a new rotating schedule rotation will include time for elective courses afforded by consolidated lunch periods. Students will have the opportunity to explore new educational programs in business, engineering, digital media and broadcasting, technology, as well as both visual and performing arts.

“CBA has a long history of holistic education and building men of character and purpose, who are prepared for the next step in their lives. Our mission has always been to offer a contemporary and balanced Catholic education, developing intellectually mature and morally responsible leaders. That core mission will not change,” said President Ross Fales. “This latest enhancement addresses the contemporary portion of our mission statement, offering our students new opportunities that are relevant to their current and future interests.”

Opportunity has aligned with demand. Educational research shows that today’s students want to explore areas they might pursue professionally one day, and they are exhibiting these interests at an earlier age. At CBA, many of the areas to be covered in the new electives were already being pursued by students, but in a limited fashion -- as senior electives, extracurricular activities, and summer programs. With the new daily schedule, all students are now able to study these subjects in an academic setting during the school day. The sequences

CURRICULUM EXPANSION

will better prepare them to continue their studies after CBA, and their achievements will now be recorded on their school transcripts. The hands-on, experiential learning offered in these electives will provide students with a variety of new experiences to accompany the traditional curriculum.

“The next generation of CBA students will be able to capitalize on what they receive from our classic liberal arts education in addition to the new elective concentrations, enabling them to enter the world more prepared than ever before,” said Principal Neil Begley ’96.

“Learning actionable skills that are directly applicable to a future field of interest will provide our students a well-rounded and effective educational experience that not only meets our students’ demand of the present but also prepares them for a future full of promise and opportunity.”

Fine Arts: In recent years, the Art Club has been a popular outlet for students, demonstrating the need for fine arts classes in the daily curriculum. New electives in drawing, painting and photography will allow students to express their ideas and showcase their talents. A fullyequipped art lab is being created in Henderson Hall, with sky lights, special track lighting, sinks and drying racks. The new art lab is part of a suite that includes gallery space as well as additional room to grow and provide 3D art courses in the future.

“Art is a huge part of a holistic education. When you are talking about educating the whole person and preparing students for a college environment, you have to teach, in an academic way, the arts,” said Victoria Meehan, art club moderator and AP art history teacher.

Performing Arts: Building upon our award-winning extracurricular performing arts, students can now enroll in a variety of performing arts classes. From AP music theory to acting and public speaking, the courses are designed to help students build upon existing skills, or develop new interests.

“The new program will introduce more

CURRICULUM EXPANSION

younger kids into the performing arts department earlier on, so that they can do it throughout high school, instead of just for their last one or two years,” said JP Shimkus '25, CBA actor and musician

Digital Media and Broadcasting: The CBA Digital Network has grown from a small extracurricular club to a popular source of student-run broadcasts of athletic contests and school events. Previously, students could gain an introduction to digital media through participating in the club and in the “Period Zero” course. Now, they will be able to take full-fledged courses in sports information and production, broadcast journalism and social media production – all in a newly-renovated and larger digital media studio space.

“We have put more emphasis on the academics behind digital media. There has been a buzz among the students because digital media is unique in the way you can immediately see the content that is produced,” said Jason Lutz ‘11, director of digital media

Technology: The CBA curriculum has included computer-related courses since the early 1970s, and the school has continuously developed courses to meet the need for technological literacy. The latest technology academic offerings will include electives in robotics, computer-aided design (CAD), the complexities of drones, and cutting-edge applications of virtual reality. Upgraded classroom space will allow for open areas for students to work with virtual reality and robots.

Business: Expanded academic offerings in business will allow CBA to continue to ready our students for both the college and professional world. Courses have been added in project management, digital marketing, business ethics and information systems management. The installation of Bloomberg terminals in the upgraded financial lab will support a college prep course in which students can earn certifications in Bloomberg Finance Fundamentals or Market Concepts.

“We live in a dynamic world and there is a lot going on in both technology and business. These two disciplines really go hand in hand. In order to prepare young people for what is happening in the world, they need to have had experienced it. When they build something, 3D model it, print it, and then incorporate it into a project they are working on, students will latch on and get excited by it.” said Michael Tomaino ‘95, business and technology department chair. “Having students do research on a Bloomberg terminal gives them a hands-on introduction to the kinds of research they will be doing at the college level and later on, in business and industry.”

Engineering: CBA has previously provided students with opportunities to explore the engineering field through its popular Engineering Club, as well as senior elective courses in creative engineering and principles of engineering. Now underclassmen as well may enroll in engineering courses, and continue pursuing their interests in creative engineering, the engineering design process, mathematical modeling and statistics. Seniors will also have the option to apply what they have learned in previous engineering courses to develop a capstone project. The addition of a MakerSpace with 3D printers and a woodworking space will provide for lessons in 3D modeling, and computeraided design, as well as MATLAB and other modeling tools.

Dedicated to Excellence

On September 16, Christian Brothers Academy culminated nearly seven years of hard work with Dedication Day, which celebrated the final projects completed as part of the Forever CBA capital campaign. In total, Forever CBA built or renovated eight different sites on the Academy’s 157-acre campus. Most notably, Dedication Day was the much-awaited official opening of the Brother Frank Byrne Dining Hall and Dolly Gartland Sullivan Kitchen.

Brother Frank Byrne, CBA’s president from 2009-2021, kicked off the Forever CBA campaign in 2017 and, working with campaign director Don Norkus ’67, was at the helm during the fundraising, planning and first construction phases. When Brother Frank left CBA to become the Brothers’ Associate Provincial, Brother Thomas Gerrow succeeded him as president. Brother Tom provided inspirational leadership for the campaign’s final year, welcoming a $1 million gift from an anonymous donor for the new and expanded Dining Hall.

“So many people have worked so hard for these new facilities, which is in line with what we have been doing since 1959: offering the best as we educate these young men,” Byrne said at Dedication Day. “Thank you to all of the donors and people who made the Forever CBA campaign and these facilities possible.”

Fathers and Sons Gather for Annual Communion Breakfast

The 65th Father-Son Communion breakfast was held on March 3. Following a Mass celebrated by Father Garry Koch, nearly 600 sons, fathers, brothers, and grandfathers were treated to a hot breakfast and a keynote address from alumnus and 2000 Sydney Olympian, Tom Wilkens '94. Wilkens shared his thoughts on commitment, perseverance and a positive outlook - whether you are an Olympic bronze medalist in swimming, student in the CBA classroom, or pursuing your own passions in life. Making it even more special, Wilkens' father and son Bryce '23 joined him at this year's breakfast, noting that he attended this same event as a student with his father in the 1990s and as a parent over the last four years with his son.

Underclassmen Begin the School Year with Traditions

The first week of September saw students back on campus and the celebration of milestone events. The class of 2027 entered the 64-year history books of the Heath Freshman Run on September 7. Gavin Schmitt ‘27 earned the title of 2023 champion with a time of 6:51.9, the third best in the history of the event. The following day, the Class of 2025 participated in the Junior Signum Fidei Ceremony, when they were presented with a customized CBA necktie. The tie serves as the juniors' "sign of faith" that they will finish their final two years at the Academy strong. CBA alumnus and current mathematics teacher Nick Galeotafiore '10 spoke to the junior class about the importance of their remaining time at the Academy. Each year, students reaffirm their commitment to being a student at the Academy by pledging to the Academy Oath. The Class of 2027 learned about the Oath and what it stands for during the annual Oath Day on October 11. The youngest Colts heard from multiple speakers and participated in breakout sessions with senior leaders throughout the day.

Class of 2024 Celebrates Commencement

On May 23, the Class of 2024 gathered for the 62nd commencement exercises at Brookdale’s Collins Arena. The 195 Academy graduates were commended for their outstanding academic, athletic, service, and extracurricular achievements throughout their time at CBA:

• 68 seniors graduated with distinction.

• The class completed 20,291 hours of community service, which is an average of 103 hours per student when only 50 hours are required.

• 40 seniors were members of CBA’s Saint de la Salle chapter of the National Honor Society.

• 16 graduates were Brother Michael Dwyer scholars.

• 48 senior student-athletes were Scholar Athletes.

• 3 seniors were named Scholar Thespians through Pegasus Production Company.

• 12 graduates were National Merit Commended Scholars, with one graduate named a national finalist.

The Class of 2024 was accepted to 213 colleges and universities and received over $25.771 million in merit-based scholarships to institutions across the country.

“I am honored to stand before you this evening,” Principal Neil Begley ’96 said to the graduates. “You will occupy a special place in my heart as you are my first graduating class as principal. During your time at CBA, you have discovered and learned skills, while also identifying and developing many talents. The foundation you have been given is a strong and lasting one, build on it wisely.”

Valedictorian Brady Prunty ’24 was also named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. He will attend the University of Notre Dame this fall.

Pegasus Productions Presents Award-Winning Shows

Pegasus Production Company kicked off its 38th season with And Then There Were None in November at the Henderson Theater. The student-run company later presented the musical The SpongeBob Musical in March. Their hard work and creativity were recognized with 11 nominations for the annual Count Basie Awards. The company took home the first-ever Basie Award for Outstanding Student Led Production. Ryan Gloster ‘24 and Ryder Solomon ‘25, along with senior board member Caroline Frick, were recognized for their student leadership. Sophomore cast member Georgia Attardi won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama for her role in And Then There Were None.

Pegasus also earned the Educational Impact Award from the Paper Mill Playhouse. This award recognizes a company that uses its production to educate its cast and crew, as well as the community, on a particular subject, issue or theme. SpongeBob The Musical taught all those involved about ocean pollution and sustainability while creating a set, costumes, and props from recycled materials.

Ryder Solomon ‘25 became the first CBA music student to earn a spot in one of the allstate level ensembles, namely the New Jersey Music Educators Association’s All-State Modern Band. Solomon auditioned against top contemporary musicians in the state, becoming one of the few selected to represent New Jersey in a concert at the Music Education Conference in February.

The CBA community collected non-perishable food items, bottled water, and hygiene and baby products as part of Campus Ministry’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. The initiative saw nearly 40,100 items donated, which were distributed to eight different locations across the Jersey Shore.

Seniors Reflect During Two-Night Kairos Retreats

This year's Senior Kairos Retreats featured a two-night stay at the San Alfonso Retreat Center in Long Branch, allowing the students to dive deeper into the Kairos program. The goal is to provide the seniors with time to reflect on their faith, relationships with others, and of course, themselves.

“The retreat was phenomenal,” shared Luke Varrichio '24 “It surpassed every single expectation I had of what Kairos was meant to be. Retreat was such a great opportunity to reflect on all the things we have here at CBA and why it's so important that we use those gifts for the betterment of our community. I can't wait for the younger classes to experience this same type of retreat in their senior year as well.”

Service Immersion Trips Provide Unmatched Experiences

CBA students, joined by faculty and staff, committed themselves to service immersion trips this academic year, adding unmatched experiences to their high school careers.

Matt Dapra ’24 was part of a group of seven Academy men who spent a week in Browning, Montana, serving the students at the De La Salle Blackfeet School. “The most rewarding of these experiences are those in which I could work directly with those who I am serving,” said Dapra. “While working closely with the eighth grade students, I was able to do precisely that, which I feel made the experience all the more meaningful. This was undeniably a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I’m profoundly grateful for having the privilege of being a part of it.”

Four students and two faculty members headed to Jonesville, Virginia in February, working with the Appalachia Service Project during the latest service immersion trip. They were tasked with rebuilding a handicap ramp that had fallen into disrepair for the 93-yearold homeowner. Seven students and two faculty members worked on the Appalachia Service Project in Virginia in April. They worked from morning to night - and even in torrential rain - on re-siding a home for a family who otherwise could not afford the repairs.

Bart Sullivan ’89, is a principal in the New York office of McNamara Salvia Structural Engineers, a civil engineering firm. He has managed the design and construction of numerous high-rise residential and commercial buildings throughout the world. Over the past 20 years, much of his experience has focused on complex structures from stadiums and museums to ultraslender high-rises. Sullivan has been heavily involved in state-of-the-art, performance-based building design techniques for a number of projects located in severe seismic zones and has an expansive knowledge of tall building behavior in high wind environments. He earned his BS at Rutgers College of Engineering and MEng at Cornell University. He is the father of a ’23 CBA graduate.

Andy Drechsler ’90 was named president of the board of directors of the New Jersey Metro & Rockland County Chapter of Breakthrough T1D, the leading global type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy organization. Drechsler has been committed to raising funds and awareness of T1D after three of his four children were diagnosed with the condition. He has spent most of his career in biotech and life sciences. The Academy Ball, October 28, 2023

The Century Club was established in 1962 as CBA’s first annual fundraising appeal, seeking contributions from parents who dreamt of a better education and future not only for their sons, but for all those families then and now longing for a strong, faith-based education. Today, the Century Club designation recognizes those parents and grandparents for continuing to support to CBA even after their sons have graduated from the Academy.

The following deserve special recognition for continuing their giving for ten years or more, as indicated by the numbers next to their names below.

Signum Fidei Society

Signum fidei (Sign of the Faith), is the motto of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and reflects the faith that these special donors have in our mission.

Members of the Signum Fidei Society have expressed their commitment to Christian Brothers Academy through an important form of financial support: they have included CBA as a beneficiary in their estate planning. Their generosity will help secure the Academy’s future.

We gratefully recognize the following individuals who have made estate gifts or informed us that CBA is included in their estate plan.

For more information on planned giving, please contact Thomas L. Ferro ’13, Director of Advancement tferro@CBAlincroftNJ.org (732) 747-1959 ext 202
