Director’s Letter
Our decision to travel to the Greek Isles this summer was led by one key idea: “Let’s do something fun.” Most times, when I tell people the show we are working on, the response is “what’s that about” or “that’s a musical?” Mamma Mia! is different. It was always met with “oh, that’s fun” or “I love that one!” Thus, the excitement leading up to tonight has been much different and I’m sure you can feel the energy in the crowd as you are sitting there tonight. Of course, I wouldn’t be true to myself if I didn’t try to make the show about something more. When we approached this show, the theme that stood out to me most was being true to oneself. Nothing is more prominent in the script than characters negotiating and wrestling with change. Each character handles their situation differently, comes to their own conclusions, and it is in focusing on and celebrating these differences that we hope to learn more about ourselves.
As we traveled down this journey together, we, as a company, have also undergone a lot of changes. Over half the cast is brand new to our company, there is a new Performing Arts department at CBA, we have completely rewired the theater and one of us even changed their name during this whole process (congrats Gina and Alex <3). Much like the characters you see tonight, these changes have caused a variety of stresses in the rehearsal process. While it may have seemed oppressive at times, it was a good reminder that staying true to ourselves would get us through. As we get ready to showcase what we’ve been working on I wanted to leave you with the same thing I told the company the first rehearsal. The mantra that kept me going through all the changes and all the stressors. The identity I wanted us all to have and remain true to no matter what. “No matter what happens, no matter how tough this might seem, we are here for a simple reason: to be part of the Pegasus family and have fun”
Enjoy the show
On a small Greek island, Sophie dreams of a perfect wedding — one which includes her father giving her away. The problem? Sophie doesn’t know who he is! Her mother, Donna, the former lead singer of the 1970s pop group Donna and the Dynamos, refuses to talk about the past, so Sophie decides to take matters into her own hands. Sneaking a peek in her mother’s old diaries, she discovers three possible fathers: Sam, Bill, and Harry. She secretly invites all three to the wedding, convinced that she’ll know her father when she sees him. But when all three turn up, it may not be as clear as she thought! Told through the legendary music of ABBA, Mamma Mia! has become a worldwide sensation that has audiences everywhere dancing.
Mamma Mia! is presented in special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
