THE

Director’ s Letter

This show is garbage. Wait, are directors allowed to say that? What I mean is that it’s made of garbage. Wait, that’s not right either. Let me explain.

When the students came to us with the idea of The SpongeBob Musical, I wasn’t too thrilled. I’m a little too old to have fallen in love with this show and my daughter is a little too young. That said, I wanted to support the students, so I gave it a read. It took about 30 seconds until my tune totally changed. This production was conceived by Tina Landau and in the script notes she states that “this is a world made of found and discarded objects that have floated to the ocean floor.” My brain exploded with a vision. What if we were more literal? What if we created an entire show from actual found and discarded objects? Honestly, I wasn’t sure and I certainly didn’t know how.

Everything you see was borrowed, reused or upcycled. It was very important to me that not a single thing used in this show added to the waste stream. We asked the community to save plastic and cardboard and it is truly amazing how quickly you can accumulate material if you ask people not to throw things out That said, the hardest part was the mindset shift It is so easy to say “Oh, that’s a great idea, I’ll go buy it” or “Yeah, we need a new one, I’ll just add it to my cart ” It takes time to look for something you may have lying around. It is a pain to ask friends if they have an extra toy or shirt they might be throwing out It takes a dramatic shift to remember that new or perfect isn’t better.

Yes, almost everything you will be looking at today was headed for the landfills and, most likely, the ocean. It’s not new, it’s not shiny, it’s not perfect. I honestly hope that, at some point, you see something and say to yourself “Yeah, that looks weird. They should have gotten a new one of those.” If you do, ask yourself “Why does it matter?” Challenge yourself to get past the idea that new and perfect is the only solution.

As always, I thank you so much for supporting our students and our theater program. I hope you enjoy the show and, more importantly, I encourage you to find one thing in the next week that you are going to throw out and give it another use. The citizens of Bikini Bottom already have enough to deal with.

Synopsis

Dive into the world of Bikini Bottom with SpongeBob and his friends. When tremors start occurring everywhere, the citizens look towards Mount Humoungus, the previously dormant volcano right near their town. Threatened by an eruption, SpongeBob and his friends embark on a journey to save their home. Along the way they meet a cast of interesting characters, like Squidward Tentacles, Sheldon J Plankton, and Eugene Krabs. With a catchy and energetic score written by a variety of musical geniuses, The SpongeBob Musical brings the beloved cartoon to life on stage. Join the team as they learn the power of friendship, community, and what makes you unique.
