Connection is a publication of Christian Brothers High School. The purpose of the magazine is to strengthen the connection between the school and alumni, parents and friends; to cultivate community support for assisting CB in its operation and advancement; and to recognize and thank supporters. News items or articles for consideration should be sent to: Natalie Reyes ’09 Assistant Director of Communications (916) 733-3622 nreyes@cbhs-sacramento.org 4315 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Sacramento, CA 95820-2727

The Board of Trustees at Christian Brothers High School is comprised of 12 volunteers dedicated to safeguarding and advancing the school’s Lasallian, Catholic, college preparatory mission. Before joining the Board of Trustees, candidates undergo training on the Lasallian charism (history, spirituality and philosophy of education) and Policy Governance—a model used by Lasallian schools throughout the District of San Francisco New Orleans. This summer the board bid a grateful farewell to Lincoln Snyder ’95 and welcomed new member, Javier Plasencia ’74. John Nunan took over the role of Chair, as Marianne Evashenk’s term concluded on June 30, 2015. The Policy Governance model comprises an inclusive, written set of goals for the school, called Ends Policies, which guide the board in monitoring the performance of the school and its CEO. Ends Policies help ensure that Christian Brothers High School adheres to the vision of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the District of San Francisco New Orleans. “Participating in the guidance of the mission of Christian Brothers High School has been truly inspiring for me. As members of the Board of Trustees, we are dedicated to fulfilling the vision and responsibility given us by the Brothers,” says John Nunan, Board Chair. “The opportunity to work with the school’s outstanding leadership and staff and to play a role in the development of such wonderful students is extremely rewarding. It is remarkable how current and vibrant John Baptist de La Salle’s ideas about education are for us today and how they continue to have an impact on everyone here.”

Message From the President November 2015

Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends: “The children in your care are a letter which Christ dictates to you, which you write each day in their hearts, not with ink, but by the Spirit of God.”—St. John Baptiste de La Salle As I reflect on these words from the Founder, I am awestruck by the sacred responsibility we hold as Lasallian Catholic educators to touch the hearts and minds of our students. More than 300 years after these words were written, De La Salle’s insight, faith and zeal continue to provide the steadfast foundation upon which Lasallian schools are built. With faith at the heart of all that we do, we are thrilled to provide students with the newly renovated Chapel of St. Joseph (see page 8). This beautiful new worship space provides students an ideal place to reflect and grow in their relationship with God. The 2015-16 school year marks the 25th anniversary of Christian Brothers becoming a fully integrated coeducational institution. While the initial addition of girls to the CB student body in 1990 was not without challenges, our school community has flourished and developed beyond anything imaginable at that time of transition (see page 5). Enrollment is the highest ever with just over 1,100 students with an almost equal ratio between girls and boys. Our inclusive, spirited school community is grounded in reinforcing mutual respect and preparing students to thrive in the real world of college and beyond. Having made more than $20 million in campus improvements over the past 15 years, I am grateful to report that the school continues to operate with no debt. Thanks to the generosity of our alumni, parents and friends, Christian Brothers also leads the region in need-based tuition assistance providing $2.5 million to 429 deserving young men and women this year. This issue of Connection incudes an Annual Report of Gifts recognizing donations given between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. All donations are crucial in our effort to continue our mission and legacy. Christian Brothers High School continues to thrive in its 140th year because at the center of all that we do is this fundamental belief that the students in our care truly are a letter which Christ dictates and we are called to write each day in their hearts. Thank you for continuing to be a part of the Christian Brothers tradition. Live Jesus in our Hearts!

In 1990, Christian Brothers High School opened its doors to young women. Unlike the school’s Bishop Armstrong “coinstructional” model where young men and women were educated in separate wings of the school, it was clear that both genders could and absolutely would learn, collaborate and lead together in the classroom. Twenty-five years later, CB is the largest Catholic high school in Sacramento, boasting a diverse student body that is balanced between young men (51%) and women (49%) and reflective of the world in which graduates will take their place.

Looking back on the transition in the fall of 1990, faculty and alumni see the change as a crucial point in CB’s rich history, bringing about countless opportunities that make CB students more mature, well-rounded and better positioned as 21st century learners. As with any significant transition, there were bound to be challenges. Br. Richard Camara, FSC, principal at the time, wrote the following to students at the end of the first year, “…I think most of you will agree that the experience has been an exciting and rewarding one and

that the cornerstone has been set in place for the Christian Brothers of the future. Particularly gratifying to me has been the way that the school’s many newcomers have been able to set aside difference of background and find a true home for themselves here.” Elizabeth Chavolla ’91, a Bishop Manogue student who graduated from CB in the first coed class, remembers some strain between the newly arrived girls and returning boys on campus, “At first I felt some tension between girls and guys, but everyone was trying their best. I was Christian Brothers Connection

5

excited to go to school with boys but also felt sad because it seemed like our little Bishop Manogue family was splitting up. Being at a new school with new classmates and teachers in my senior year of high school made me feel like a freshman all over again.” While moving to a new school senior year was difficult to do, Chavolla believes sharing the classroom with boys and girls was an important learning experience, “That’s life, that’s the real world- you are always going to have to interact with men in one way or another. It prepared us for college to be in the classroom with men. It was an experience that made us all better.” Danny Delgado ’79, science teacher, cross country coach, and former Dean of Students in 1990, recalls CB students and teachers being nervous about the addition of women to the classroom, “There were students and even faculty who were very against the addition of women to the student body because they felt that it would break both tradition and the ‘brotherhood mentality’ amongst everyone. I thought the switch to a coeducation was a great idea. I wanted my daughter, who was just born at the time, to have the same education that I received in a realistic environment, where she would be encouraged to be her true self.”

6

Christian Brothers Connection

Chrys Cassetta, CB English teacher and one of 13 former Bishop Manogue teachers joining the CB family, says, “We were excited to come to CB, but did not feel immediately welcomed as members of the CB community. After the first year or so, the faculty became a more cohesive group and the students adjusted to their new classmates.” “It took the first year for everyone to acclimate, however, subsequent freshmen classes began to bond quickly,” says Tom English, history teacher. “By 1992, more friendships were developing between the girls and boys, tensions were fading. The girls began to academically challenge the boys inside of the classroom and the guys’ old antics to assert male dominance amongst their peers were not flying with the girls. Having the girls around helped the boys socialize better and overall there was a great improvement in the students due to the coed student body.” As years passed, Christian Brothers High School embraced its new identity as a coed institution yet continued to enroll a higher percentage of male students. However, change arose again in 2009 with the closure of Loretto High School, leaving its students and faculty unsure of where they would go next. Christian Brothers High School opened its arms again to welcome 128 students and two faculty members in the 2009-10 school year. Using lessons learned in 1990, the school created a plan to welcome its newest members.

“We worked very hard to ensure a smooth transition for the young women who joined us from Loretto High School,” says Principal Mary Hesser. “Lessons learned in 1990 positioned us to warmly welcome our new students and faculty members.” Paul Havey ’81, religious studies teacher, sees young men and young women sharing the classroom as an important opportunity for personal development. “The world is not single-gender, so why should students spend four of their most important years learning only with other men or women? By having students share the classroom in a coed environment, they learn how to successfully collaborate with other students who do not share the same viewpoints, background, and gender as their own. This allows us to better prepare all of our students for success in college and the real world.” Delgado believes that the difficult decision to transition to coed was one of the best in CB’s history. “Since the addition of women to the student body, the school’s identity has shifted. There is still a sense of ‘brotherhood’ on campus, but one that is now more inclusive. The switch to a coed student body has allowed the school to grow and develop beyond what it would have done as an allboys school. There is a level of equality amongst the student body that is not seen at other schools.”

Dave Desmond ’94, current assistant principal and graduate in the first four-year coed CB class, recalls his first impression coming back to CB earlier this year and the great changes made to campus, “My immediate reaction was being ‘wowed’ by all of the improvements on campus and by all of the teachers here who make CB so inviting and comfortable for everyone. You can feel the energy every day in the classroom and on campus. I am fortunate to see that CB is going in the right direction, in part thanks to the wise decision to embrace coeducation made by the Brothers and the Diocese in 1990.” Today, Cassetta sees the focus and direction of the school being in a much better place than it was upon her arrival, “The mission of Christian Brothers High School is very prominent in daily campus life. Since the addition of women to CB, I have seen the environment at school become both more Lasallian and student-focused. Everyone on campus is here with the needs of the students as their top priority.” President Lorcan Barnes recognizes the benefits of both single-gender and coeducation formats, “As a product of single-gender education myself, I know that students can learn and flourish in an environment made up of their peers who share the same gender. However, when it came to choosing a high school for my sons, my wife and I wanted coeducation

because it is reflective of the world our sons will encounter in college, careers and life.” Look beneath CB’s excellent college admissions and high standardized test scores, and you will find an inclusive, spirited school community grounded in reinforcing mutual respect and preparing students to thrive in the real world of college and beyond. A growing body of research shows the benefits of coeducation include: •  Increased confidence in expressing views in the presence of opposite-gender peers. •  An ability to make friends easily with both males and females. •  Increased opportunities to participate in co-curricular activities with oppositegender peers. •  Increased participation by girls in the classroom. As a Lasallian Catholic school, it is CB’s responsibility to prepare students to thrive in college, a workforce and world that include both men and women. Rather than separating boys and girls during this important developmental time, educators mindfully facilitate interactions that reinforce mutual respect, collaboration, friendship and learning to appreciate differences in others. Doing so in the classroom is ideal as it is both purposeful and supervised. Thomas Payne ’16 sees coeducation as vital to the CB education, “Coeducation

is an accurate representation of our society. At CB you learn the appropriate ways to work with the opposite gender which can later translate into the real world and the workplace. I learn so much from the girls in class. They offer a fresh perspective on issues that I typically see from a male standpoint.” “There is no doubt that having both boys and girls in the same classroom creates a more diverse and thoughtprovoking learning environment,” says Brittany Leek ’16. “Coeducation is a direct reflection of CB’s Lasallian values. I believe I benefit by learning in a coeducational environment because it prepares me for college and the real world. Two of CB’s five core principles are ‘an inclusive community’ and ‘respect for all persons’. I see these principles in action every day at CB, and I believe having a coeducational environment benefits the CB community in not only learning, but living these values.” As a teacher who has been a member of the CB community since 1979, English sums up the current state of the school best, “The friendships formed on the CB campus will last a lifetime. I truly feel that the school is better than it ever has been and that CB is the place to be!”

A clear blue sky and warm sunshine created the perfect September morning for the blessing of the Chapel of St. Joseph, CB’s newly renovated chapel. Donors and families gathered in the beautifully redesigned chapel on September 17, as Bishop Cotta conferred a blessing and officiated the first mass in the chapel. Following the mass, President Lorcan Barnes thanked the chapel supporters. Guests then enjoyed a short reception on the main lawn with coffee and pastries. On Sunday, September 27, an open house officially welcomed families, friends, and alumni to view the new chapel. Many were in awe of the dramatic changes and grateful that today’s students can celebrate faith in such a beautiful space.

Built in the early 1960s, the old chapel was designed to accommodate the Brothers living on campus. Throughout the years, students were encouraged to use the chapel for prayer and reflection, however the chapel’s dark atmosphere and inconvenient location were not particularly inviting. The intention of the Chapel of St. Joseph’s design was to create a warm, welcoming space for all to enjoy. The statue of St. Joseph, namesake for the chapel, formerly located in the main hallway, is now positioned in the “new front” of the chapel on the main lawn. “The Christian Brothers community is grateful and thrilled to have a new worship space on campus that accurately reflects the importance of faith in our Lasallian, Catholic community. We look forward to using the new space for Kairos prayer services, student and faculty masses, and other important worship activities,” says Lorcan Barnes, president. “A special thank you to the Jackson Family, the estate of Jim Dunphy ’41, Mrs. Agnes Anderson and all of the donors who made this beautiful chapel transformation possible.”

Msgr. James Murphy, Elisa Chavolla, Elizabeth Chavolla ’91, and President Barnes

Christian Brothers High School is home to many awards and recognitions, but this summer an Emmy award joined the collection. Elizabeth Chavolla ’91 donated her first Emmy Award to CB, taking home the award at the 2014 Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards for the Informational/Public Affairs Series category. Chavolla works as a Multi-Platform Producer for Telemundo Media in Los Angeles, home of the largest Hispanic market in the country. One of the shows she produces is Enfoque (translated to “In Focus”), a community affairs program that dives deep into one topic or issue affecting the Hispanic community each week. Subjects of the show have included the California drought, immigration reform, the election of Pope Francis, and Dia de Los Muertos. What makes Enfoque different from other Telemundo programs is its direct focus on the community as well as its regular incorporation of leaders and activists into the show. “Without local leaders and experts volunteering their time to come on the show to speak, there would be no show,” Chavolla described. “With only five people, including myself, filming and producing the show each week, we rely heavily on experts to come in and present facts from both sides of the discussion in order to fully inform viewers.” Enfoque is also filmed, produced and edited all in one day with a limited budget, making the show even more exciting and challenging to create. When Elizabeth is not working on Enfoque, she is producing the 6 o’clock news show every evening on Telemundo in Los Angeles.

Since beginning her work on Enfoque three years ago, Chavolla always knew what she wanted to do with her first Emmy win for the show, “I told myself and my coworkers from the beginning that if we ever won an Emmy for this show, I would donate it to my high school.” Chavolla continued, “Christian Brothers teaches its students to give back, which is what I feel like this show is doing. Enfoque is all about informing the community about issues and spreading information to make the world a better place, which to me aligns well with CB’s mission ‘Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve’.” Chavolla won a second Emmy award for her work as a line producer for a Telemundo/NBC TV special on California driver licenses and immigrants. Although the award for her work on Enfoque is near and dear to her heart, she is happier to have the award shared with the CB community instead of sitting on a bookshelf at home. “This award means so much to me because of the meaning of the show and the small group of people who work in front of the camera and behind the scenes to make the show happen, but I am much happier giving it to CB to cherish and appreciate,” says Chavolla. President Lorcan Barnes appreciates Chavolla’s generosity and good work, “We are so proud of Elizabeth’s professional success and hope it will inspire CB students to work hard and dream big. Her generosity and dedication to the Christian Brothers motto is sincerely appreciated by the CB community.”

Twenty-eight CB students and two faculty members said to France over the summer for a three week trip to Paris and Avignon. This trip was the second half of an exchange program between Christian Brothers High School and La Salle Avignon, a fellow Lasallian high school in Avignon, France. In April, 21 students from La Salle Avignon came to Christian Brothers for two weeks, living with CB students and host families to experience American culture and improve their English. La Salle Avignon students attended class at CB and enjoyed excursion trips that included a trip to Lake Tahoe, a day at Six Flags in Vallejo, a San Francisco picnic at Crissy Fields, a day at the Calaveras Mines and even a Rivercats game. Patricia Gallagher, international student program director, remarked, “CB families are awesome! The host families were so accommodating and kept the visiting students active. Our CB students showed them a fantastic time!”

10

Christian Brothers Connection

The goodbye send off for the French students was tearful and somber, yet the hosting CB students knew they would all be reunited in just a few weeks when they journeyed to France. In late May, Christian Brothers students landed in Paris ready to perfect their French accents and soak up the culture. Gallagher and French instructor, Stephanie Howorun, immersed the students in the “City of Lights,” taking them to the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, Louvre Museum, Catacombs and other memorable sights before boarding a train to Avignon two days later.

As the students stepped off the train in Avignon, they were greeted by a sea of people eager to welcome them. The CB students were excited to be reunited with their French counterparts and anxious to meet their host families.

while also making new friends in the process. “I learned that I know enough French to survive on my own! Going on the trip allowed me to develop more self-confidence and a better awareness of the world around me,” explained James Casey ’17.

While staying in Avignon, students visited Chateau D’If, the island fortress depicted in The Count of Monte Cristo as well as a perfume factory where they were able to create their own custom scents. A favorite attraction for everyone on the trip was Carrieres de Lumieres, an old limestone quarry turned art exposition with projected images of Renaissance art on the walls and ceiling accompanied by music. After their two weeks in Avignon, students capped off the trip by returning to Paris, visiting the Palace of Versailles and taking a dinner cruise on the Seine River before returning to the States the next morning.

Like Casey, McKenna Decker ’16 was able to learn more about herself while abroad, “I became more independent being so far away from home in a foreign country without my family. I learned to stay calm and collected during stressful situations, including getting lost!”

After living together for five weeks in two countries, staying in each other’s homes and bonding with their host families, it is safe to say that the CB and La Salle Avignon students grew very close. “I definitely see Arthur as my French brother. I still keep in contact with him and I know that even years from now we will still be friends. It is cool to think that I will always know a family in France and can plan to visit them in the future,” said Daniel McCarthy ’16. Overall the trip was a great experience for students, exposing them to a new culture and a different way of viewing the world

McCarthy recalled the difference between the schools, “La Salle Avignon has very few co-curricular activities like sports teams, clubs, art programs and dances, which is very different from what we experience here. The trip made me appreciate all that CB has to offer and grateful to be a student at a school that allows students to find out who they are by exploring their interests both inside and outside the classroom.” Gallagher has led students on many trips to Europe, yet she never tires of watching them learn and thrive while in a foreign country, “The students kept saying how much they appreciated CB, Sacramento, their families, and what they had at home. Seeing another school in another country made the students really recognize and appreciate the fact that people really care for them at CB and want them to succeed.”

Falcons Fly to See It was “Pope Pandemonium” when Pope Francis made his first visit to the United States to attend the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia in September. The CB community was excited for the big visit, especially the 12 students, eight parents and three teachers who embarked on a journey to Philadelphia to see the pope and experience the “City of Brotherly Love.” Preparations for the CB papal pilgrimage to Philadelphia began in spring when interested students and their families applied to go on the trip. The team arrived in Philadelphia on Wednesday, September 23, a few days prior to Pope Francis’s arrival to avoid the planned closure of the city. Students spent their first full day touring La Salle University and met up with recent CB graduate, Blake Edwards ’15, to hear about his college experience. The group then enjoyed a historical tour visiting Independence Hall to see where the Declaration of Independence was signed, the Liberty Bell, the U.S. Mint and Betsy Ross’ home.

12

Christian Brothers Connection

Later that evening, the group worked alongside nearly 150 volunteers assembling meal bags for distribution in West Africa by Catholic Relief Services. Over the course of two hours, volunteers put together 40,000 meal bags, double the goal. The CB group capped off the night with a search for the perfect Philly Cheesesteak, as a reward for all of their hard work. On Saturday, the team camped out along the pope’s motorcade route for over nine hours to ensure a great spot for viewing Pope Francis and enjoying the World Festival of Families. While they only caught a brief view of the pope, students, parents and teachers reveled in an evening of reflection along with hundreds of thousands of other attendees, hearing testimonies from people around the world, listening to musical performances and reflecting on a message from Pope Francis. The group returned again on Sunday, ten hours early to secure a prime spot before the Papal Mass on Franklin Parkway. CB students were blessed to see the pope not once, but twice, and snapped some great photos of His Holiness. Maria Paula Linares ’16 recalls the feeling she had seeing Pope Francis up close, “The pope was merely 15 feet away from my group, and it was breathtaking. To me, it seemed as if there was an inner light shining

Pope Francis from Pope Francis. Toward the end of the mass, there was a moment of prayer and of absolute silence. Absolute silence when you’re in a sea full of people changes you. There were hundreds of thousands of people in that parkway, but after the silence was over all you could hear was the pope blessing us all.” For Kendall Ralph ’17, the trip will be one she will never forget, “This trip was an amazing, once in a life time experience. Being in the presence of, and listening to, a person who has changed our faith for the better is an indescribable feeling that I will hold with me for the rest of my life. Along with the strengthened faith and historical knowledge I gained from this trip, I also made new friendships and reinforced old ones.” “I am truly grateful to be a part of the Christian Brothers community and to have been given the opportunity to witness the humble Pope Francis,” says Linares. “Attending both papal events in Philadelphia, especially the mass, brought me closer to my faith and showed me the true power of His Holiness Pope Francis. I am eternally grateful to Christian Brothers for giving me this life changing experience.”

HOLY BOWL 2015 Christian Brothers High School alumnus, Lon Burford ’73, and Jesuit High School alumnus, Kelly Brothers ’82, hosted a Holy Bowl Kickoff party on Friday, September 11, at the Croatian-American Cultural Center. The evening event included musical performances, a live auction, tailgate fare, and speeches by coaches and players from both schools. “Kelly and I are proud to be a part of this fantastic event celebrating two amazing schools and one timeless rivalry. This was a great first year for the event and we hope it will turn into an annual tradition for alumni, families, and friends to enjoy,” said Burford. Alumni, parents, and supporters from both schools attended the event to celebrate the 45th annual Holy Bowl game as well as the tradition of friendly competition between the Falcons

and Marauders. Event proceeds were donated to tuition assistance funds at both schools. On game day, hundreds of Falcons fans enjoyed the Holy Bowl Parking Lot Pep Rally hosted by Christian Brothers High School. The La Salle Club was on hand manning the grill and cooking up some tasty food, while the CB Junior Falcons cheerleaders and CB cheer teams stopped by to pump up the crowd. It was great to see past and future Falcons at the event ready to cheer on Big Blue. A huge THANK YOU to all of the football families, volunteers, and staff who helped put on this great event. Nothing beat the CB spirit out in full force at Hughes Stadium! A roaring sea of blue sprawled across the Christian Brothers’ bleachers with pompoms and signs in tow. CB looks forward to another spirited Holy Bowl game next September!

CAMPUS IMPROVEMENT

A new school year at Christian Brothers typically means improvements to campus. A big 2015 addition is the school’s second engineering lab, located on the upper floor of the STEM wing. During the summer, Room 601 was converted to an engineering lab to accommodate second-year engineering students. Principles of Engineering, the primary course taught in the new lab, provides students with a survey of several engineering disciplines including: mechanical, civil, structural, materials, and electrical. Course instructor Mrs. Christine Thayer notes, “The lab allows us to introduce our second-year engineering students to what they would normally see in a college engineering program in terms of the formulas, calculations, and design skills not only learned, but also applied to team projects. At CB, they learn what engineering is all about before committing to a college major.” Each discipline in the Principles of Engineering course has either a computer simulation or hands-on project for students to practice their calculations and theories.

“I really enjoy the engineering courses here, which has led me to thinking about pursuing engineering in college. I am grateful for the opportunity to take these courses in high school.” — Madeline Mercer ’18

16

Christian Brothers Connection

CB's engineering program has 150 students enrolled and counting.

As sophomore Madeline Mercer ’18 describes, “The secondyear engineering course and this new lab allow me to put everything I learned the first year of engineering into practice. In this class I have more room to be creative with my ideas and to test them out with hands-on projects rather than just computer simulations. Thanks to the class I am seriously considering engineering as a major in college.” “This year, 150 students are enrolled in engineering courses, demonstrating the program’s popularity amongst students. The second laboratory would not have been possible without the support of our generous donors,” President Lorcan Barnes explains. “We are thankful to the donors who allow us to provide students with the tools and programs essential to their success as 21st century learners. Programs like engineering allow our student to explore career options early on, better preparing them to make career and academic-related decisions in college.”

DONOR PROFILE

Mark Perry ’71, Susan Perry & Erin Perry ’08 Mark Perry ’71 has been giving to CB continuously for an impressive 29 years, starting around the time that he and his wife, Susan got married. Mark maintains a strong connection to CB, attending annual alumni events, pouring wine at the Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza, and staying in contact with a strong network of CB friends. Susan, who became a CB inlaw when she and Mark married, has adopted that network and is herself a proud CB supporter. Susan notes, “CB is so much more than a school, it’s a whole community.” “CB has always been a part of what I believe in. I have lifelong friendships dating from my high school years,” said Mark, noting that business relationships in daily life are often touched by his CB connections. When asked about teachers who were great influences, Mark quickly points to names that will be familiar to many; Ron Limeberger ’53, Mel Fontes, Dick Sperbeck , Jack Witry, and Brother Claude, FSC. Says Mark, “Susan and I value education, and believe in giving back. CB taught me that. CB made us all better men.” “I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend CB. Back in the late sixties, early seventies, I think the tuition was only $700 a year. But I know it was the Brothers’ sacrifices that kept tuition that low. I give because I can help kids who can’t afford it get the same great education I did. It’s important to Susan and me, and makes us feel proud that we can help kids in need.” Both Mark and Susan believed in CB, so when the time came

Christian Brothers Connection

for their daughter Erin to choose a high school, they were thrilled that she chose CB. “I went to CB when it was all boys,” says Mark, “but it’s even better now that it’s co-ed. I couldn’t be happier that my daughter is part of CB alumni with me.” Mark and Susan value what CB stands for, what it represents to the community, the great education it provides, and that service is a focused part of the curriculum. Says Susan, “Erin had a great experience at CB. She had so many opportunities for activities, service and engagement. The faculty give so much time and care to their students. She was really ready for college.” Erin ’08, went on to graduate from Willamette University, and is now working as a biochemist in the Bay Area. Dr. Bill Iliff ’76, a member of CB’s science faculty, has invited Erin back to campus to talk to his classes about study and career in the sciences. And like her father, she is also now giving back to her alma mater via the alumni fund. Mark and Susan have clearly been role models for their daughter. But when asked if she inspired Erin to donate to CB, Susan demurred, “We tried to be that kind of role model, but I think CB may have been the one that really did it. She did a lot of service in high school, and has continued that in her life today.”

DONOR PROFILE

Sam and Billie Jean Kanelos Proprietors of Old Ironsides, Sam and Billie Jean Kanelos are tied to Sacramento’s history, and Christian Brothers High School history as well. William (Bill) Bordisso, Billie Jean’s father, founded Old Ironsides in 1934 – with the first liquor license issued in Sacramento following the repeal of Prohibition. That same year, Billie Jean’s uncle Lou Bordisso was a founding member of the LaSalle Club at Christian Brothers, helping to support the athletics program with memorable events like “Night at the Races.” Like Old Ironsides, Christian Brothers is a family affair for the Kanelos clan. Sam Jr. attended CBHS, graduating in 1972. A network of nieces, nephews, cousins and grandchildren have attended CB and Bishop Manogue High School through the years. When Sam Jr. enrolled, the Kanelos’ began donating to the school – and haven’t stopped! Sam Sr. notes, “In those days, we were so busy running a family-owned business, that just didn’t leave a lot of spare time to volunteer at the school. So we gave in the way we were able.” Without time to offer, Sam and Billie Jean offered their treasure, giving what they could each year. The Kanelos’ believe strongly in the importance of Catholic education, seeing the benefit it provides to both children and

the community. Notes Billie Jean, “The school and the Brothers have done so much for the Faith, for children, for families. They teach character. It inspires us!” So every year, without fail, for at least four decades, the Kanelos’ have made a gift of financial support to CBHS, numbering them among the most stalwart of CBHS donors. In 1983, Billie Jean’s nephew, John Jackson ’68, initiated an endowed scholarship fund at CB in memory of his grandfather and Billie Jean’s father, William Bordisso. The fund and the good work done in her father’s name, is near and dear to Billie Jean’s heart, “It is so special to us that there is an endowed fund in my father’s name at CB. We give to the William Bordisso Endowed Scholarship Fund, because we know it helps low income kids that otherwise wouldn’t have been able to attend CB. My dad would have really liked that.” The Kanelos’ have witnessed the lasting connection and lifelong friendships that his Christian Brothers experience provided to their son, and recall influential role models like Brother Martin, FSC, and Coach Sperbeck. “We were always pleased with Sam’s education, and he is still in touch with his alumni group. It makes us feel good to know that we help give that experience to other students.” Recently, Sam and Billie Jean visited campus for the dedication of the Chapel of St. Joseph, and celebrated the memory of Billie Jean’s late sister, Claudine Bordisso Jackson. After seeing the chapel and all CB’s new programs and facilities, Billie Jean summed up, “We’re so pleased with all that’s happening at CB today. My father and my sister would be proud. We’re proud to be a part of it too.”

SURVEY SAYS... Christian Brothers High School strives to improve the student experience and takes opportunities for growth seriously. To do this, feedback is regularly requested from students, alumni and parents. Over the summer three groups were surveyed: members of the Class of 2015, parents of freshmen and senior students, and alumni who are one year (Class of 2014) and five years (Class of 2010) out of CB. Below is a summary of each survey’s results: Seniors were surveyed in spring about their experience as a CB student. More than 64 percent of the class responded. Overall students were very satisfied and an impressive 75 percent would recommend CB to others. Some of the words most often used by students in the survey included: fun, challenging, memorable, friends, amazing, educational, community, growth, enjoyable and stressful. The top five programs mentioned as the best programs offered at CB were: Kairos, KBFT, Arts, Sports and Venaver. The vast majority of respondents felt that CB provided them with a quality academic experience as well as contributed to their social and emotional growth. Using the recommendations of Fred Reichheld (2006), parents are asked “The Ultimate Question”: Based on your experience at Christian Brothers High School (on a scale from 10 to 0, with 10 being very likely and 0 being not very likely), how likely is it that you would recommend CBHS to students entering high school? From the results of this question, a Net Promoter Score (NPS) loyalty metric is calculated. Using the business industry as a model, companies with the most efficient growth operate at NPS of 50 to 80, although the average firm obtains a NPS between five and 10. Christian Brothers has consistently ranked in the high 70s with senior parents and 80s with freshmen parents each year for the past five years. Over 94 percent of senior parents responded to the survey. The aspects about Christian Brothers which were praised most by parents include: academics, community, and staff. CB’s NPS among Class of 2015 parents is 80. Below are some quotes from responders: “I love the diversity, the nurturing environment, and the opportunities for all students to succeed.” “The school gave my older son a perfect learning environment that challenged him to succeed. I feel confident that he is prepared for college, and can’t wait to see my younger son follow the same path.” “High school is difficult enough. Having a school where the student feels wanted and ‘at home’ is priceless.” Approximately 64 percent of the freshmen parents responded to the survey. Academics, community, and staff were again named as parents’ favorite qualities. CB earned a NPS of 84 from freshmen parents. Quotes from responders include: “Christian Brothers High School is a welcoming community, focuses its curriculum on the whole student and there is something for everyone.” of both senior and freshmen students

“My son has enjoyed his classes, teachers and meeting new friends. The CB atmosphere has been a blessing.” “My daughter loves CB and that says everything.” Each year young alumni are surveyed one and five years after graduation regarding how well they felt CB prepared them for college and life. This year the Classes of 2010 and 2014 were surveyed. Out of the Class of 2010 graduates, roughly 15 percent of alumni completed the survey. A stellar 100 percent were satisfied with the strength of CB’s academic program and agreed that CB prepared them for the rigors of college. Nearly 90 percent of students said that they would choose to attend CB again if given the opportunity. Over three-quarters of students felt either “very satisfied” or “extremely satisfied” with the amount of homework received at CB preparing students for college homework. Since graduation, 82 percent of alumni have performed some type of community service. Below are a sample of alumni’s responses: “I give my college success to CBHS. I couldn’t have asked for a better education that has given me so many opportunities for success.” “I met some of the best people I know in my time at CB. I gained so much more than a textbook education that helped shape my morals and values in life.” Almost a quarter of Class of 2014 graduates completed the survey. An impressive 97 percent felt well prepared for the rigors of college. The vast majority of students felt “well prepared” or “very well prepared” when asked if they were prepared to “respect differences in others.” For 85 percent of responders, one or more teachers at Christian Brothers stood out as helping them prepare for college. Over three-quarters of students felt “very satisfied” or “extremely satisfied” with the overall strength of CB’s academic programs. Quotes from young alumni in the Class of 2014 include: “Loved it. So many genuine people who care about one another and treat people with respect.” “CB really is exactly what it claims to be. It provides students with a faith-filled and college-prep education. CB really did change my life.” “Christian Brothers High School has an amazing sense of community, teachers who truly care about the students and help them learn to the best of their abilities, and adequately prepares students for college. I highly recommend Christian Brothers to incoming high school students.” Participation in the survey is sincerely appreciated and the information gathered will be used to improve school programs in order to continue to make CB the place to be.

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS: Desmond, Nolan, Livaich & Cunningham Duane’s Auto and Body El Dorado Savings Bank Harbison Estate Wines Loehmann’s Plaza Like a fine wine, CB’s annual Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza just gets better with time. Taking over campus one evening each September for the past 28 years, this year’s event was bigger than ever with 2,050 alumni, family and friends descending upon CB’s campus for an evening of food, fun and fellowship. Guests enjoyed a plethora of food and drink choices thanks to the 110 local wineries, breweries, and restaurants in attendance. The evening’s festivities generated over $140,000 to support the CB tuition assistance program. When one considers the average scholarship at CB is $5,600 in 2015-16, enough money was raised to make attending CB possible for 25 deserving students, enough to fill a classroom! Guest enjoyed the Private Reserve Tasting on the Mary Lawn, which begins an hour before the main event. Jackson Rohm entertained the crowd with a blend of hit songs from the 1960s through today while 325 wine enthusiasts and guests enjoyed exclusive wines and hors d’oeuvres. Party-goers found the main lawn blanketed with tables hosting wineries and restaurants while breweries and more food vendors were stationed in the Koppes Family Plaza. The Champagne Lounge included bubbly and delectable desserts for guests. Patrons of the Cigar Bar enjoyed special cigar and whiskey pairings. A special thank you to the Classes of 1982, 1983 and 1984 for hosting food tables. The generosity and support of all of the alumni, wineries, breweries, restaurants, and vendors never ceases to amaze me,” explained CB President, Lorcan Barnes. “This superb event takes many months of planning and preparation to make each year more successful than the last. I cannot express enough gratitude to event chair Kellie Corcoran-Dietz ’00, Nancy SmithFagan, Director of Advancement, Keith Cherry ’82, Director of Alumni Giving, and the entire Alumni Association Board of Directors for their hard work in support of our tuition assistance program.” A big thank you to Chris Curtis, honorary CB graduate, for providing the wonderful hors d’oeuvres during the Private Reserve Tasting. Thanks also to Neumann Limousine Ltd. for their generous support and assistance in ensuring that everyone had a safe ride home. Although the event may have just ended, the team is already hard at work preparing for next year’s big event.

Ambassadors’ Club Dinn On a beautiful October evening, guests gathered at Christian Brothers High School to celebrate the 31st annual Ambassadors’ Club Dinner, recognizing CB’s most generous supporters. Attendees viewed a thank you video produced by four CB seniors, listened to the musical styling of harpist Alanna O’Neill ’19 and enjoyed a performance by the CB Chamber Chorus during dinner. The program commenced with a State of the School address by President Lorcan Barnes, followed by words from keynote speaker Melissa McClellan, CB director of college counseling. The evening concluded with the presentation of the 2015 Ambassador of the Year award to Dr. Francis J. Silvey III ’54. The Silvey family has an extensive legacy at Christian Brothers High School including three generations of graduates. “I have a lot of history at CB, not only myself but my father, grandfather, and uncles attended. Everyone went to CB,” Francis enthused.

Frank J. Silvey, Sr., the honoree’s grandfather, moved to Sacramento on the Transcontinental Railroad at the age of five and graduated from Christian Brothers College at 12th and K Street in 1890.

baseball for one year and varsity for two years. He covered second base on the field and laughingly recalls taking more than one bad hop to the face. Francis also played basketball and was wellknown amongst his classmates.

“All I can do is encourage people to keep on supporting the school and the good work they are doing.” - Frank Silvey III ’54

When not playing sports, Francis studied hard and pushed himself academically. He fondly remembers the excellent teaching of the Brothers, “They did a great job teaching us, Brother Phillip, FSC, in Chemistry and Brother Eric, FSC, in Physics. Even though they didn’t have the best facilities, they provided us a great foundation for learning and I am forever indebted to them.”

Frank Silvey Jr., Francis’s father, graduated from Christian Brothers in 1919. His uncles, Edmund and Carol, also graduated from CB in 1916 and 1931 respectively. Needless to say, Francis was born a “Brothers Boy” thanks to the Silvey legacy. While at the school, he played JV

After graduating from CB in 1954, Francis went on to attend the respected dental program at Sacramento City College before continuing his education at the UCSF School of Dentistry where he graduated with a doctoral degree in dental surgery. He then packed his bags and moved to Moses Lake, Washington,

er 2015 to serve his country in the Air Force for several years before returning to Sacramento to open his own dental practice. He then met his wife Jean, to whom he has been married for 52 years. Francis enjoyed serving several of the Brothers and area priests at his dental practice, including Brother Richard, FSC and Most Reverend Bishop Quinn. A longtime supporter of the school, Francis was awarded the 2015 Ambassador of the Year Award in recognition of his inspiring generosity, enthusiastic participation in the Class of 1954’s student sponsorship efforts and a recent contribution to establish the F. Silvey Endowed Scholarship Fund at Christian Brothers. Inspiration for this gift came from Francis’s time at CB and the quality education he received, “I want students to get a good start in life and a good education by attending Christian Brothers. My hope is that students

receiving scholarships will have the same opportunities that I had when I attended CB. The cost factor of attending CB is so much more than it was when I was a student, and my hope is that I can alleviate some of that burden.” Dave Higgins ’54, a childhood friend of Frank, was thrilled to hear about the award. “Frank is most deserving of this award. But even more important, it reflects the spirit of the graduates of CB to give back to the community in which they live.” “It is incredible to think about the

Silvey family’s longtime connection to the school,” says Lorcan Barnes, president. “The Christian Brothers truly shaped generations of families. Francis epitomizes our mission of ‘Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.’ We are grateful for his lasting contribution to the students of Christian Brothers High School and we are honored to recognize Dr. Francis Silvey III as Ambassador of the Year.” Dr. Silvey hopes to see the school’s legacy and mission continue for years to come. “All we can do is encourage people to keep on supporting Christian Brothers and the good work they are doing.” Christian Brothers Connection

The Brotherhood—

Same Philosophy but Changing with the Times By Dr. Pat Melarkey ’49

O

ne evening approximately five years ago, I was driving around Napa, California and decided to go up to Mont La Salle to see the Novitiate. The area is still beautiful with an operating vineyard and I found at the back of the property, to my amazement, a cemetery. Shortly inside the gate, was Brother Bertram’s headstone and next to him were all the men who taught at Christian Brothers High School in the 1940s. Brothers Damien, Kevin, Eugene, William, Vincent, Conrad, Ambrose and Cyril were all right before me. They were still together in the “Brotherhood.” Over these past few years I have continued to reflect on that time in Napa at Mont La Salle and the Brothers that had such a big influence on my life. While a student and teenager, it was difficult to adequately appreciate the sacrifices that were made. I was aware of the sacrifices my parents made in order to send me to the school, but the Brothers also sacrificed in order to increase the personal growth of my fellow students and myself. Someone gave me a copy of Dr. Bill Illiff’s ’76 book “Let Us Remember.” This publication was beautifully researched by Dr. Illiff and it quickly brings one up to date on the complete history of CB in Sacramento. He now maintains his dental practice and teaches science at CB. Some of this material I am repeating but I felt it was important to give him some exposure again since many graduates are unaware of the sacrifices the Brothers have made to keep this school going for 140 years; in fact a copy of this book should be given to all that have graduated from CB. In 1920 the Brothers were told by the Bishop that they needed to move from their original school building, called St. Patrick’s Institute, which was located at 12th and K streets. The diocese decided to sell the property to Weinstock and Lubin Company for a department store. The downtown was beginning to prosper and the commercial value was high. The proceeds were given to local contractors who built a new school at 21st and Broadway on a piece of land donated by the Bishop. In a rush to get CB open, the Brothers had to set up a temporary campus at 39th and J Streets to conduct their classes on property that is now the site of Sacred Heart Church. The construction of the school on Broadway necessarily came under some time saving construction economies that lingered from 1923 to when the time I entered school in 1945. There were many items of deferred maintenance; such as no hot water and cold showers for months in the Brothers living quarters. It’s understandable why some of them came to school a bit cranky to begin the day.

By the 1950s it was evident that the 21st St. school must be replaced as well as the combined feeling in the diocese that a new school for girls was needed to replace St. Joseph’s Academy (9th and G St.) and St. Francis High School (25th and K St.). This ended up with a fundraising drive to combine the schools into a co-instructional environment, Bishop Armstrong High School. It was decided that the school be located at its present location on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. (called Sacramento Blvd. at the time). Just prior to that, a number of people had recommended that the boys school be located in an outlying area, however the Sacramento City Council, and other wise leaders, recommended they build where it is now located. Joining the Christian Brothers order was not like joining a fraternity at a university. Whereas the motto of the school is “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve”, the motto of the Christian Brothers order equals joining the order with strict regulations and responsibilities and to give up the possibility of a family. Pope Francis recently pointed out that one of the real benefits of a healthy society is raising children and forming families. That goal is valid, though the Brothers have taken vows to live in community and devote themselves to education young people, the CB community is in itself the Brothers’ family. The Christian Brothers High School of today has blossomed into one of the finest organizations in the nation with their coeducational program, generous donations by faculty, parents and supporters of the school. The highly regarded staff and leadership of President Barnes and Principal Hesser has been praised by many important people. Having two grandsons recently graduate from the school, the observations I have made as a grandparent is that the Brothers have performed a miracle on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and it looks like future growth is assured. My reflections, a few years back while seeing the Brothers together in the cemetery at Mont La Salle, was one of pride and love for sacrifices made and their devotion to CB.

SENIOR VIDEOS NOW ON YOUTUBE When was the last time you watched your Senior Video? Is it in

YouTube so that they can be viewed anytime.”

that one random box in your storage unit, or in the dusty corner of the basement? For some of you, your senior video is on a VHS tape and therefore virtually unwatchable. Good news: all senior videos are now on YouTube! That is right, now you can stream your senior video anytime you feel nostalgic or want to share your favorite high school memories on social media. To see all of the senior videos, please visit YouTube and search “Christian Brothers High School Senior Video.”

The team has run into some obstacles in posting the videos online, specifically with copyright laws for the popular music of each year used in the videos. YouTube allows the senior videos to live online and be viewed, but certain sections have been muted in order to comply with music licenses.

The masterminds behind this idea to bring all of CB’s senior videos to the World Wide Web are Mr. Tomas Capogreco ’86 and Mr. Brendan Hogan ’95, moderators for the Senior Video class. Hogan explains, “People just don’t have VHS players anymore, leaving them unable to watch their senior video and reminisce on the past. Everyone is now streaming their media, which made sense to transition all of the senior videos to

66

Christian Brothers Connection

It is hard to believe that the first senior video was created over 16 years ago using just a shaky camcorder. Sarah Slakey ’99 and Capogreco, self-proclaimed video geek, had the idea of putting together a compilation video for the senior class. They filmed everything that year- all of the sports games, dances, rallies and other school events, while also interviewing the seniors about their favorite CB memories and hopes for the future. Slakey and Capogreco collected all of the footage and requested the help of David Mosqueda’s ’99 grandmother to edit the video before sending it out to be reproduced on VHS for all of the students. During that first year of making the senior video, the pair came up with the idea to have the senior class run at the camera in the gym and wave, now a staple shot in the annual video. For Capogreco, that is his favorite part of the video each year, “I love to see all of the happiness in the students’ faces as they run at the camera, as well as their joy and the spirit they all have for CB and their peers. Plus everyone looks so young. I just love it.”

Students and Capogreco continued to produce the video on their own until 2003 when it officially became a class on campus (and also was released on DVD for the first time). Seniors looked forward to documenting their final year on campus and creating a masterpiece of memories. In 2009, the tradition of creating the video became a part of Hogan’s Video 3 class curriculum. Now both Capogreco and Hogan facilitate the creation of the senior video but still leave the creativity, filming, and producing in the hands of the seniors. So grab the popcorn, call your friends, and stream your senior video on YouTube. There will definitely be some “What was I wearing?” and “What was I thinking?” moments, but also guaranteed smiles and fond memories of your senior year at CB.
