Board of Trustees 2014-15 The Board of Trustees at Christian Brothers High School is comprised of 12 volunteers dedicated to safeguarding and advancing the school’s Catholic, Lasallian college preparatory mission. Before joining the Board of Trustees, candidates undergo training on the Lasallian charism (history, spirituality and philosophy of education) and Policy Governance – a model used by Lasallian schools throughout the District of San Francisco New Orleans. This summer, the board welcomed new members, Stephen Mahaney ’69, Dan Petrocchi ’62 and David Walrath. Marianne Evashenk is taking on the role of Board Chair. The Policy Governance model comprises an inclusive, written set of goals for the school, called Ends Policies, which guide the board in monitoring the performance of the school and its CEO. Ends Policies help ensure that Christian Brothers High School adheres to the vision of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the District of San Francisco New Orleans. “It is a profound honor to represent the Brothers and keep the Lasallian mission moving forward. They have given us all the tools we need to be successful,” explains Evashenk. “We also have a wonderful relationship with Lorcan Barnes. He is insightful, inclusive and open to constructive ideas. His talent, energy and enthusiasm really help ensure that CB is the best place that it can be.” As for the coming year, “I look forward to working with this board,” says Evashenk. “They are such a talented, committed, intelligent, extraordinary group of people. We all have similar desires for outcomes, with different points of view on how we might get there. I’ve learned so much from them and they are a joy to work with.”

Message From the President November 2014 Dear Alumni, Families and Friends: “Be assured that once you have placed yourself in God’s hands…though He still leaves you in sorrow, He will help you by His grace to endure this trial, perhaps in a way that is not obvious, or else He will deliver you from it by surprising means and at a time when you will least expect it.” St. John Baptist de La Salle On November 3, I received a phone call that no school administrator ever wants to receive. One of our students, Spencer Pershall ’17, had taken his own life. In one tragic moment, a brilliant life full of love and promise ended. In one tragic moment, a family is forever broken. Asking why is pointless. No answer makes sense of the senseless. Many times this week, I thought about this passage from the Founder’s meditations as I have seen it reveal itself in myriad ways. The grace demonstrated by our faculty, guidance counselors and staff in caring for our students, as loving big brothers and big sisters, was inspiring. The grace displayed by our students who comforted one another while suffering through their own grief was heroic. The grace demonstrated by our Prayer and Faith class in planning a beautiful prayer service was heartrending. The grace revealed while seeing our students and faculty gather in the chapel in prayer, remembrance and community gives me hope. Our faith teaches us that Spencer is now in God’s loving embrace. We will continue as a faith-filled community to remember that we are in the holy presence of God – for God’s holy presence is really the only place that any of this can begin to make sense. Spencer’s death leaves a void in this Christian Brothers High School community that will never be filled. As we move forward together in sorrow, I am grateful for our Catholic faith as we place ourselves in God’s hands and pray for His continued grace and healing. I am grateful to the parents and guardians who entrust us with the hearts and minds of their children. I am also grateful to the alumni, families, and friends who give so generously to ensure that this faith-filled community continues into our 139th year and beyond. This issue of Connection includes an Annual Report of Gifts (pages 16 to 39) to recognize donations given between July 1, 2013, and June 30, 2014. Every name represents a vital partner in fostering this sacred mission. Please keep Spencer, his brother Gordon ’15, the Pershall and Kerth families and our Christian Brothers High School community in your prayers. Live Jesus in our hearts!

cience, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are critical skills greatly needed in America’s workforce. The U.S. Department of Commerce estimates that jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) will grow 17 percent by 2018— nearly double the growth for non-STEM fields. Current projections indicate that more than 1.2 million U.S. jobs in STEM-related fields will go unfilled by 2018. Christian Brothers High School can already boast outstanding programs in science, technology and math. In the fall of 2014, the school launched a Pathway to Engineering program in partnership with Project Lead the Way (PLTW). “Principal Hesser came to me and shared her idea for adding the program to CB’s curriculum,” explains Lorcan Barnes, president. “I couldn’t conceptualize it until I happened to be visiting a high school that was hosting a Pathway to Engineering competition. Seeing this phenomenal program in action moved me to see the lifechanging possibilities for our students.” “Lasallian education is rooted in innovation and giving students what they need, when they need it,” explains Mary Hesser, principal. “We know that the time to expand the American engineering talent pool is now. Providing our students with a curriculum that instills a love of engineering and develops future innovators and problemsolvers who also possess deep core values, positions our young men and women for success. That is Lasallian!”

Adding the Pathway to Engineering program was not as simple as purchasing the curriculum. It also necessitated the construction of an engineering lab. Donors at CB’s 2014 auction donated a phenomenal $90,000 to help with the project. An additional $200,000 in commitments and gifts came in during the spring. Construction of the engineering lab, which is housed in the “STEM wing” - formerly known as the SMAT wing - took much of the summer. The school plans to add at least one more lab in the near

“The Pathway to Engineering curriculum is nationally recognized,” says Coyner. “Add to that the fact that the donors and school have provided us with the best lab and spared no expense in ensuring that our students have the most powerful computers and even a 3-D printer, we really have the best facilities in the area.”

Donors were invited to celebrate the grand opening of the facility at an open house in August.
“The students will be applying engineering, science, math and technology to solve complex, open-ended problems in a collaborative, real-world context,” says Coyner. “These skills will serve them well, whether or not they pursue careers in STEMrelated fields.”
“I wish that CB had an engineering program when I was here,” says Jarret Link ’10, a 2014 Duke University graduate who entered a biomedical engineering Ph.D. program at U.C. Davis this fall. “Engineering is a great profession and I’m happy that today’s CB students will have these experiences. Hopefully, they will develop a love for it and continue on in college.”
“I really enjoy the group projects and learning new skills like isometric drawing and how we can apply that,” says Michael Ost ’18. “I definitely plan on taking engineering all four years at CB and look forward to learning more about the different disciplines of engineering.”
“When we decided to move forward with the project, we had no way of gauging student interest,” says Barnes. “We had not even held our placement exam for incoming freshmen. Optimistically, we thought we would fill two classes. Instead, we have four. I’m excited for our students and grateful to our donors.”

Program BUILDING ON SUCCESS
Year one of CB’s student iPad program, the 2013-14 school year, was one of discovery and learning. The program, designed to harness students’ energy and enthusiasm for technology and direct it toward learning to thrive as 21st century communicators, thinkers and problem-solvers, was used across CB’s curriculum in varying capacities. “We know the iPad supports essential skill areas — complex communication, new media literacy, collaboration, creativity, and self-directed learning,” says Principal Mary Hesser. “I’m pleased that our students benefit from this dynamic teaching tool, but, cognizant of the fact that it does not replace the special teacher-student relationship at the heart of a Catholic, Lasallian classroom. We want our young men and women to have the best of both worlds.” In the spring of 2014, school leaders conducted a survey of parents, students and faculty to gather data regarding the ways in which the device was used and ideas for enhancing the student experience in the future. A significant benefit cited by all groups was the integration of the learning management system, “Schoology,” which provides students and teachers a common platform on which to communicate. Schoology enables teachers to share assignments and resources digitally. Further, it was used by clubs, departments, Lasallian Student Life, admissions and administration to efficiently communicate with student groups and minimize classrooms disruptions. The parent feature provides a window into the day-to-day activities of their student(s) that complements the grading information available in PowerSchool, the school’s web-based student information system. “I like the information available on Schoology” says CB parent Julie Gallardo. “I can’t be at the school but, I do like that I can see the week’s assignments, school messages, Talon articles, upcoming events and so much more. The information might not always get to me through my son, but, I can easily get to it through Schoology.”

Christian Brothers Connection
Students reported that the iPad was an excellent tool for taking and organizing notes, conducting research, collaborating with classmates and managing their course loads. Parents were pleased with the lighter backpacks thanks to electronic books and also, in many cases, lower book bills. Easier access to resources and practical life exposure to technology also surfaced as parent favorites. “I like that I have everything that I need to say organized in one place,” says Aaron Davis ’18. “I can’t carry my computer everywhere with me,” says Ritam Sarmah ’15. “It’s really nice to have immediate access to information.” “Having an iPad at school is very helpful,” says Victoria Linares ’15. Thanks to the iPad, I can get immediate information, additional insight and even assistance if there is something I’m not understanding.” “Schoology is my agenda,” says Katelyn Bates ’16. “I love it because I can get all of my team messages from wrestling and soccer there. And, my teachers post additional resources that are helpful when I’m studying or working on assignments.” Parents did, however, ask for additional help in managing the device at home to limit distractions and for an increase in the use of electronic books. “We take our parent comments to heart,” says Chris Symkowick-Rose, assistant principal for curriculum and instruction. “We kicked off the year with parent training sessions and have posted information on managing parental controls. We are also redoubling our efforts to identify more digital books and resources. Further, we’ve hired an educational technology specialist who is dedicated to maximizing the effectiveness of the device for our students and teachers.” The school plans to make year two of iPad implementation even more successful by partnering with families and continuing to engage in the best teaching practices both with and without the iPad. CB is committed to ensuring that students are well prepared to be successful in 21st century learning and working environments.

Visual & Performing Arts Irish Tenor Performs at Christian Brothers
The La Salle Club sponsored two summer concerts featuring Anthony Kearns, one of the founding members of the PBS super group "The Irish Tenors" on July 24 and 25. Both shows, held in the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center, featured dancers from Sacramento's own McKeever School of Irish Dance and representatives from the Irish American Ceili Dancers.

Spearheaded by Joe McNamara ’83, a member of The La Salle Club, the July 24 performance included a special tribute to Msgr. Edward Kavanagh in recognition of his long service to the young people of Sacramento and his inspired history of bringing the best in Irish entertainment to Sacramento. Irish eyes were smiling as Kearns performed “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen,” and “She Moved Through the Fair.” There may even have been a few tears shed with the Les Miserables ballad “Bring him Home,” and of course, “Danny Boy.” All in all, the 90-minute performances were only made better by the phenomenal acoustics in the Thea Stidum Theatre and the enthusiastic crowds.

A Movie Premiere for Antonio “Tony” Rodriquez ’16 Tony Rodriquez ’16 did not expect much when he submitted his first-ever film script for consideration by Access Sacramento’s 15th Annual Film Festival committee. In June, he was notified that he was one of the ten winners and was now on his way to produce his first film to be showcased at the Crest Theatre. Tony was the youngest winner! Although the production involved a tremendous amount of work, Tony was determined to make it happen. He recruited Reed Kiefer ’16 to assist with filming. Kiefer’s roll expanded to director and editor. Rodriguez also recruited his brother, Coby Sturgeon ’12 to produce the music, work on the audio and as the boom operator. The film, “The Charismatic Man” debuted at the Crest Theatre on October 5 to fantastic reviews. Judging by the warm reception it received, this may be the first of many awards for Tony Rodriguez ’16.
Actor and Director Earn Elly Awards Congratulations to Garrick Sigl ’15 who brought home an Elly Award for best leading male performance for his phenomenal work in "The Drowsy Chaperone." Elly Awards are presented by the Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance (SARTA) to acknowledge outstanding work in local productions. Connor Mickiewicz also won for best director for his work on the “The Drowsy Chaperone.” In total, 43 participating theatres submitted 101 productions to SARTA for consideration. Dan Carmazzi ’71 Dan Carmazzi ’71 stepped up to take over the varsity football program following George Petrissans’ move to Clovis West High School last spring. Six months into it, he is loving the challenge. Carmazzi, who returned to Christian Brothers in 2012, worked as offensive coordinator with Petrissans and currently serves as the school’s assistant athletic director and as a teacher. “I really enjoy coaching these young men,” says Carmazzi. “It was great to coach with George Petrissans and work with these young men as their offensive coordinator. But, I realized that I missed leading a program. I’ve got a great group of coaches and I’m thankful to the administration for giving me this opportunity.” Carmazzi’s varsity coaching staff includes Evan Boylan, Al Hooker, Dave Hoskins, Sean Morris and Kevin Polnasek. “Naming Dan to the position of head coach ensures that our players will continue to benefit from his vast coaching experience and, more importantly, his character and high standards of excellence,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “It is fantastic to have an ideal candidate on staff who is ready, willing and eager to take on the job.” “Coach Carmazzi is a great choice,” says Kyle Cherry ’15. “He has the respect of the entire team and we all like playing for him.” Carmazzi’s experience includes 31 years as head football coach, seven years as an assistant athletic director, and nine years as an athletic director at Jesuit High School. Carmazzi was named a Model Coach by the California Interscholastic Federation in 2005 and is a member of the 200-win club.
CB Joins Capital Athletic League in CIF Realignment Christian Brothers High School athletics fall under the direction of the Sac-Joaquin Section (SJS) of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) – California’s governing body for high school sports. To accommodate changing school populations and new high schools in the section, the SJS goes through the realignment process every four years. With this year’s realignment cycle, CB will compete at the Division III level which is comprised of three leagues: the Capital Athletic League, the Tri-County Conference and the Valley Oak League. CB is a member of the Capital Athletic League which also includes Casa Roble, El Camino, Mira Loma, Rio Americano and Vista del Lago. “The SJS has been meeting for about two years regarding this realignment cycle,” explains Dale Milton. “In 2000, the Sac-Joaquin section had 137 schools. In 2014, there will be almost 200 schools. Realignment is essential to ensuring that schools are placed in the appropriate Divisions and that new schools can be integrated into the various conferences. I believe the new CAL offers us some tough competitors, and exciting playoff opportunities for all of our sports programs.”

CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS It was a busy and productive summer at Christian Brothers this year. Building the engineering lab in the STEM wing necessitated relocating the library. Recognizing that pathways to knowledge have changed in the digital world, school leaders opted to create a “Learning Commons in the centrally-located space that housed the music classrooms from 2006-2014. This new facility provides a space that is optimal for both learning and community. The cafeteria also received a bit of a makeover with new flooring, paint, glass doors and new furniture. Finally, it looks as good as the food!

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS
– Alumni Association on a Mission – The CB Alumni Association declared that its mission for 2014 was making the 27th annual Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza the most successful and enjoyable to date. Judging by the happy crowd of more than 1,800 alumni, family and friends attending the fun-filled event on Friday, September 5, mission accomplished. After nearly a year of planning and hard work, the festivities featured offerings from dozens of vineries, breweries and restaurants and generated a phenomenal $130,000 to support tuition assistance. The event began with the Private Reserve Tasting which featured exclusive wines and a variety of cheeses and hors d'oeuvres. Nearly 200 wine aficionados and friends gathered on the Mary Lawn to enjoy this festive precursor to the extravaganza. Wineries and restaurants filled the main lawn, while the breweries and additional restaurants spread out across Koppes Plaza. Back by popular demand, the Cigar Lounge where patrons could enjoy a taste of whiskey as they smoked and the Champagne Lounge where guests enjoyed delicious desserts with a nice glass of bubbly. A special thank you to the Classes of 1979, 1983, 1984 and 1992 that also organized food tables which were located throughout the event. “I am so grateful for generosity of our sponsors, and the many wineries, breweries, restaurants and classes who made this event possible,” says CB President, Lorcan Barnes. “Over the course of the last year, event chair, Patrick Harbison ’98, Nancy Smith-Fagan, director of advancement, Keith Cherry’82, director of alumni giving, and the entire Alumni Association Board of Directors looked for ways to make an already wonderful event even better. They definitely succeeded, particularly when you consider how the event continues to benefit our students who rely on tuition assistance.” A special thank you to event chair, Patrick Harbison ’98, and the entire Alumni Association Board for their time, dedication and hard work in making this a fantastic evening to remember. Thanks, also, to Neumann Limousine Ltd. and Uber for their generosity and assistance in making sure that attendees had safe rides home. Plans are already underway to make next year’s event another successful event in support of a fantastic cause. Mark your calendars for Friday, September 18, 2015!

Brother Bertram Legacy Society The Br. Bertram Legacy Society was established to honor those who have generously remembered Christian Brothers High School in their estate plans. Br. Bertram was known to generations as a beloved teacher, friend and Brother. In his 70 years of service, Br. Bertram lived as a passionate advocate for Lasallian education. Held in high esteem by alumni, parents and friends of CB, Br. Bertram lived fully the mission of St. John Baptist de La Salle, believing always that a school was the best place to touch the hearts and minds of young people. For these reasons, the Christian Brothers High School Legacy Society is named in honor of Br. Bertram Coleman, FSC. If you have included CBHS in your estate plans, or if you would like information about the Brother Bertram Society, please contact Nancy Smith Fagan, director of advancement, at 916-733-3608.
A Legacy of Education – Donor Profile Peggy Desmond’s connection to Christian Brothers High School first began when she married her husband Michael Desmond ’56, and grew even stronger when her son David ’94 was a student at CB. Michael had an undying love for Christian Brothers, with brothers, son, nephew, in-laws and cousins all part of the extended CB family. When he began teaching at Brothers it was a dream fulfilled. He fully embraced the charism of the Brothers and was thrilled to be back home and in a position to touch the hearts and minds of students. A long-time educator herself, Peggy soon realized that Christian Brothers was a unique place, with consistently quality teachers who care deeply about their students. As a parent, she saw how important it is that children have a foundation in the Catholic faith. In her own 35-year career as an educator, she was guided by a simple mantra, “What is best for the kids? How can we help the kids?” When Mike passed away in 2001 the outpouring of love and support he and Peggy received from the Christian Brothers community touched her heart. She began to think about what she could do in response. She wanted to create something enduring, and she wanted to remember the Desmond family. In keeping with her mantra, How can we help the kids? Peggy decided to help provide a Christian Brothers education to kids who cannot afford it — establishing the Desmond Endowed Fund in Michael’s honor.

Peggy notes, “I’m not a wealthy woman. But the more I gave, the more I wanted to give.” After a conversation with her children, who fully supported her decision, Peggy included Christian Brothers High School in her estate plan. Peggy Desmond’s giving decisions reflect a lifetime of values. By remembering CB in her estate plan, she will ensure that the values she has lived through her life will continue. She is building her own legacy, a legacy of education.
George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center By Dr. Pat Melarkey ’49
Y
ou must come out to see the new George Cunningham’40 Performing Arts Center at Christian Brothers High School. The new $6.6 million state-of-the-art building opened this past April. In July, the La Salle Club celebrated with two concerts by Anthony Kearns, the famed Irish tenor. If you happened to be there and listened to him sing such lyrical ballads and songs as “I’ll Take You Home Kathleen” and “By the Dalkey Tower,” a song concerning “The Troubles” as the Irish struggle for independence from Great Britain and you didn’t feel the depth of passion with which he conveyed them then you might be in need of a heart transplant, for it was truly heart-rending. I grew up in Sacramento and attended parochial schools, beginning with Immaculate Conception Grammar School in Oak Park where I graduated from the eighth grade in 1943 and was then enrolled at Christian Brothers High School on 21st and Broadway, where I graduated in 1949. There was a man who attended CB and graduated a few years before I did. This man made a significant contribution to our alma mater that will be felt for many years to come. That man is George Cunningham, Class of 1940, and he made a $1 million contribution to the newly opened performing arts center that bears his name in its title. Within the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center is the 350-seat Thea Stidum Theatre, named in honor of Sacramento resident, Thea Stidum. I have never met George Cunningham, or his fellow arts patron, Ms. Stidum. But, the service work that Cunningham and Stidum have performed on behalf of Christian Brothers is part of the school’s longstanding tradition of public service. If you’re not familiar with it, perhaps a little history lesson is now in order. Christian Brothers High School is a private high school located within the Diocese of Sacramento. The school was founded by the De La Salle Christian Brothers in 1876 and in its 138-year history, the school has changed its location three times and been known by six different names. What remains unchanged is the Christian Brothers’
spirit and tradition of teaching and caring for young people. No alumnus has better followed that tradition than George Cunningham and it is a tradition that is as old as Christian Brothers. While the school of Christian Brothers did not officially open until 1876, the school existed as one of the main driving ideas of Archbishop Joseph Alemany of San Francisco for 20 years before it opened its doors. In 1873, a fundraising drive was begun for the school and by October of 1876, a total of $15,000 had been raised. Much of this money was raised by a woman who was a San Francisco transplant to Sacramento, Maggie Cunningham (no relation to George), who went doorto-door in Sacramento in horse-andbuggy raising money. With this money as a foundation, Bishop Alemany sent seven of his Christian Brothers to Sacramento. Thus Christian Brothers was born. The George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center is but one of several capital-intensive projects Christian Brothers High School has undertaken since its Building on the Tradition Campaign got underway in the 1990s. A new $7.5 million Science, Technology, Engineering and Math wing opened its doors in 2002. The $4.5 million Jack Witry Field House was constructed in 2008. All of the funding for these projects as well as the money for the performing arts center was raised privately, mostly from CB alumni.
The motto of Christian Brothers High School is “Enter to learn, leave to serve” and in a 2012 story published about George Cunningham ’40 in the Christian Brothers student newspaper, The Talon, Delenn Breedlove ’13 wrote “The 91-year-old man says he has “developed a curiosity about just about everything” and that he would “really like to learn more.” Placing a strong value on learning, Cunningham says that “High school is the most important transition between childhood and adulthood. If I could sing, I would be a song and dance man.” As a compromise, Mr. Cunningham can listen to the voices of the Christian Brothers choirs and bands in the music classrooms and in the new theatre. The George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center is not a vanity project. More than 600 of CB’s 1,074 students are involved in the arts in one form or another. The building, which also contains a music library, two classrooms and a lobby for displaying student art work will see plenty of use during the coming years. People ask me why I support and give to the institutions related to the Catholic Church like my ole alma mater Christian Brothers and I answer them by saying ‘How can I not give to an institution that gives so much back in terms of the young people that it turns out? I’m sure that Mr. Cunningham and Ms. Stidum feel the same way. It is a small price to pay for our collective futures.’

Ambassadors Celebrated Christian Brothers High School celebrated its most generous supporters at the 30th annual Ambassadors’ Club Dinner. Attendees at the event, held October 23 in the Jack Witry Field House, enjoyed music by CB’s jazz trio, a beautiful choral performance by the Women’s Chamber Chorus and a thank you video featuring CB’s students created by John Costa ’12. CB’s President, Lorcan Barnes, provided a state-of-the-school message followed by student speakers Daniel Lee ’15 and Garrick Sigl ’15. The evening culminated with the presentation of the 2014 Ambassadors of the Year award to Leo ’55 and Gayle Granucci, Bob ’55 and Carolyn ’57 Granucci, and Ken ’54 and Marolyn ’57 Harris by two of their grandchildren, CB students Luke Harris ’16 and Isabella Granucci ’15. When Ken Harris ’54, and twin brothers Leo ’55 and Bob ’55 Granucci attended Christian Brothers High School, the all-boy school was located at 21st and Broadway. Twin sisters, Carolyn ’57 and Marolyn ’57 (Meredith) were part of the first class of young women to attend Bishop Armstrong’s co-institutional school at the school’s current campus. While their experiences were very different, their respect for and admiration of the work of the Christian Brothers are woven into their formative experiences of

growing up in Sacramento. “We met the Brothers when we were attending St. Francis High School (a precursor to attending Bishop Armstrong High School),” says Carolyn. “Back then, they were frequent visitors to the school and we knew them all by name. Br. Gabriel and the others were wonderful.” Carolyn and Marolyn’s father, Z. Bud Meredith, attended Christian Brothers in 1926 and was later awarded an honorary diploma by Br. Bertram Coleman, FSC. The list of memorial donors who contributed to CB following Bud’s passing in 1985 reads like a “Who’s Who” of Christian Brothers history with names like Delgado, Higgins and Westlake. “I respect the Brothers so much,” explains Gayle who met Leo on a blind date in 1954. “I went to Sac High where my graduating class had 400 students. I met Leo, his friends and family and attended dances at CB. Leo’s class had 75 graduates and everybody knew everybody. The Brothers knew everybody. I was so impressed.” “I have such positive memories of my experiences at the school,” says Ken. “Our sons (Kenneth ’81 and Patrick ’83) and now our grandson, Luke ’16, have had great experiences. People’s feelings for the school are deep and lasting.”

“Our boys (Thomas ’82 and Brian ’85) could not get here fast enough,” says Carolyn. “They really liked going to school here and the teachers really cared about and liked my children. That is important.” “When you look at the formation we received in academics and personal character, it really set us up to be successful,” explains Bob. “I really believe that if you instill a sense of personal character, people will succeed. That is what the Brothers have done for us, for our sons and, now, for our grandchildren.” “Gayle and I moved to Fresno, Bakersfield and Southern California after graduation,” says Leo. “After an absence of about 30 years, what impressed me the most was that CB continued its tradition of service to others, Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve,” says Leo. “What I really appreciate about Christian Brothers is that it really makes no difference what your culture, ethnicity or family life is like, they are going to offer the same excellent education and formation to every student,” says Bob. “St. John Baptist de La Salle fed them, formed them and educated them. That tradition continues today at Christian Brothers and I’m proud to support it.” “The true testament to the success of

Christian Brothers is the fact that school is providing $2.3 million of tuition assistance to more than 400 students,” says Ken.
Soon after, Ken shared the idea with two of his classmates, Larry Lynch ’54 and Frank Silvey ’54. Shortly thereafter, the Class of ’54 hit the ground running.
“The Granucci and Harris families have been tremendous supporters of Christian Brothers High School’s mission,” says President Lorcan Barnes. “Together, they helped create our Class Sponsorship program.”
Their involvement with the school doesn’t end there. Ken worked with Jerry Kirrene ’53 and the history committee gathering and compiling information on alumni through the decades. Bob served as a member of the Board of Trustees for six years. Leo and Gayle established the Leo ’55 and Gayle Granucci Endowed Scholarship Fund to provide tuition assistance each year to a deserving student.
“We were reluctant Bob, Leo and a to accept this award,” group of classmates says Bob. “But, I really (Terry Dorsey ’55, see this as a celebration John Giordano ’55, of family and all of the Dick Giusti ’55 and families who support 2014 Ambassadors of the Year: Bob ’55 and Carolyn ’57 Granucci, Marolyn ’57 and Jerry Williams ’55) met Christian Brothers High Ken ’54 Harris, Gayle and Leo ’55 Granucci to discuss strategies for School. Members of the Class of 1947 enjoyed an October luncheon get together at Aviator’s restaurant at the Executive Airport. Since 2010, Jerry Kirrene ’53, and a cadre of helpers have been researching and chronicling the rich and storied history of Christian Brothers High School. Comprised of former students, teachers, coaches, and parents, the group put in motion the first comprehensive attempt to organize a readable and detailed account of this 138-year-old institution. Aided by yearbooks, private scrapbooks, old photographs, and personal testimony, the committee has written historical accounts of football, basketball, baseball, and the La Salle Club on the school’s web page (www.cbhs-sacramento.org). Also posted are the chapters of Let Us Remember, a history of CB written by Bill Iliff ’76.

Kirrene and classmate Tom Colby ’53 have been working to create a digital database of memorabilia including photos, yearbooks, Connection magazine and much more to ensure the continued preservation of these important annuals and items. Currently, much of the Kirrene basement is filled with files, pictures and memorabilia as they move forward with this timeconsuming endeavor. “We want these things to be available to people if they ever need them,” says Kirrene. “And, we want them to be able to find them.” Kirrene, who recognizes that memorabilia does not do much sitting in box or a basement, has helped create historical displays in the main hallway and in the admissions office of the school. “I want the kids to see that they are connected to history,” says Kirrene. “They are connected to something very special and very important in the history of Sacramento.” Anyone with memorabilia they would like to share with the school is encouraged to contact Jerry Kirrene ’53 at jkirrene@sbcglobal.net. The Honorable James Long ’55 (ret.) was awarded the first ever Nathaniel S. Colley Sr. Lifetime Achievement award from the Wiley W. Manuel Bar Association (WMBA). The award, named for the City of Sacramento’s first African-American attorney, was given in recognition of Long’s many years of service in Sacramento having worked with Legal Aid Society of Sacramento and for the California State Legislative Counsel Bureau. He was an Assistant Professor in the Criminal Justice Department at California State University, Sacramento and served as special Legal Counsel, Western Region, for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He is also the co-author of the book American Minorities: The Justice Issue. Judge Long was appointed to the Superior Court of Sacramento County in 1982 where he served until 2012. In addition to the award, the group also introduced the “James L. Long Scholarship” which will be given to deserving law students. The Holmberg brothers are getting nowhere fast but they are persistent. He produces an annual concert/ lecture series “Abbey Church Events” and is curator of the Abbey’s Martin of Tours Collection of Pacific Northwest Art. Bernie Church ’62 was inducted into
to the C.K. McClatchy High School Hall of Fame at its October 2014 Hall of Fame Dinner. Church, who taught for 36 years at McClatchy, served as the school’s varsity baseball coach for an impressive 16 years. He also coached basketball, football and soccer. In 2012, the school dedicated the baseball field in Church’s name in recognition for his outstanding leadership and dedication to the program. Opportunity knocked for Kevin Spease ’86 and his wife, Angela, when some beekeepers knocked on their door asking if their honeybees could spend the winter on the Spease’s property. In exchange for lodging, the beekeepers offered 4 gallons of honey. The following spring and summer, the bees were transported off the property to orchards in the local area and returned late in autumn. Following a second winter of hosting the bee visitors, Kevin and Angela received four more gallons of honey. Now, they really had too much honey! At dinner one evening someone suggested that they sell the honey and call the company, “Spease Bees Honey Company." The name stuck, they developed a label and the business took off from there. The honey is now available in a number of local stores and, best of all, 25 percent of the proceeds benefit causes that improve literacy programs for children. Pick up a jar today!

Chris Rasmussen ’88 was awarded the ConnectedCOPS International Social Media Leadership Award. The award was presented at September’s Social Media In Law Enforcement (SMILE) conference in Birmingham, England for singularly demonstrating exemplary and selfless leadership in the use of social media to improve public safety and/or enhance the Redwood City Police Department’s community engagement and reputation. Officer Rasmussen was commended for his creativity, innovation and willingness to share his knowledge by mentoring others, participating in public speaking opportunities and leading by example. Rasmussen, has been in law enforcement for 23 years, having served in both the San Francisco Police Department and currently the Redwood City Police Department. Congratulations to Aaron Moreno ’91 who was inducted into the Sacramento Blues Society’s (SBS) Hall of Fame in 2014. According to SBS, Moreno, who performs under the name of Aaron King, has been an ambassador for Sacramento blues around the world showcasing a style that owes as much to jazz guitarists like Herb Ellis and country guitarists like Hank Garland as it does to blues guitarists like Albert King and Albert Collins. Born and raised in Sacramento, King got his first lessons in blues from Sacramento Blues Hall of Famer Johnny “Guitar” Knox. He continued his blues guitar education under the mentorship of another Sacramento Blues Hall of Famer, Little Charle Baty, developing a style that would combine blues, jazz, and country guitar. From there he spent his formative years playing guitar for and recording with the late, great pianist Omar Shariff. Playing with renowned Sacramento jump blues band The Chrome Addicts, King went on to win several Sacramento Area Music Awards (Sammies) including a Critic’s Choice Award for Outstanding Guitarist. After several national and international tours with the Chrome Addicts, he left the band to start his own group, Aaron King and the Imperials. In addition to playing with the Imperials he also toured with world-renowned boogie-woogie pianist Mitch Woods playing such prestigious festivals as the Montreal Jazz Festival and Umbria Jazz Festival. In recent years, King has broadened his musical horizons through his association with highly respected Sacramento jazz bassist Harley White, Jr., blurring the lines between blues, jazz, funk, and even hip-hop in an effort to continue pushing the music forward. To be considered for the SBS-HOF, nominees must have Blues as the primary format or music style, at least a 20-year history of Blues participation, made a historical contribution and had an impact and overall influence on Blues in the Sacramento region, as determined by the SBSHOF Committee.

Asha Veal Brisebois ’00 and Derek Helwig ’00
met up in Chicago at a public humanities event for the nonfiction travel narratives book "The Places We’ve Been: Field Reports from Travelers Under 35" (published fall 2013). Helwig is a contributing writer to the book and Veal Brisebois is the editor. In total, there are 48 contributing writers from cities and countries including London, Greece, Tanzania, Dubai, Lebanon, Montreal, Vancouver, South Africa, Scotland, Paris, South Sudan, Rwanda, Borneo, North Korean Border, Tokyo, Paraguay, Colombia, New York, Los Angeles, and more; with affiliations and honors from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Atlantic, BBC, StoryCorps, Marvel, MTV Base, and more. The book has been acknowledged by the Illinois Humanities Council and Veal Brisebois was invited to present it in September as a Bridging Cultures Project—projects intended to promote understanding and mutual respect for people with diverse histories, cultures, and perspectives within the United States and abroad. The book has been included in university curriculum in courses in cultural anthropology, Africana studies, and literature. More information on the book and the project is available at facebook.com/ThePlaces35. After producing 12 seasons of The Amazing Race, Derek Helwig ’00 took the leap into other ventures. In the past year, he has produced the American Baking Challenge for CBS, Lone Target for Discovery Channel, and was the Senior Producer for a new show called Dealing Steel set to air later this year on Discovery Channel about a group of mechanics who restore classic cars. In the meantime, he and his wife, Deanna, cashed in Derek’s Amazing Race frequent flyer miles and took their own around the world trip visiting China, Cambodia, India, France, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Italy, and England. As mentioned above, Derek also took a stab at literature, writing a chapter for the travelogue The Places We’ve Been: Field Notes from Travelers Under 35 about his trip with Deanna hitchhiking across Rwanda.

Abby Williams ’11 spent the summer interning for the William E. Simon Foundation
which supports a number of Catholic and charter schools in the South Bronx and Jersey City areas. Working for the Foundation was not only a great learning experience, but also gave Williams cause to reflect upon her educational experiences and opportunities at CB. She opted to become a policy studies major after traveling to New Orleans during her junior year at CB as part of a VENAVER retreat aimed at helping to rebuild the area following Hurricane Katrina – five years after the devastating storm. As a result of this positive VENAVER experience, she joined Lafayette’s Alternative School Break (ASB) club during her freshman year in college as a trip participant. In sophomore year, she joined the Executive Board as Education Chair and in her junior year she led a trip to the Jersey Shore focused on disaster relief and recovery. (Full circle four years later!) As a senior, Williams is serving as president of ASB and plans to go on yet another service trip. Williams says that her experience with ASB is a direct result of her VENAVER experience.
Kelsey Wong ’11 did not know all that was
in store for her when she signed up to spend her January term in Sri Lanka, she simply knew that she would be serving the community in the capital of Colombo. Even if she had known, nothing could have prepared her. Wong, a senior at St. Mary’s College of California says “I had no idea that over the course of one month, I could fall so in love with such a beautiful country and its people through my service. While I have a million favorite parts of this trip, my two main highlights would be living with the Brothers and serving in an all-boys school. I had the pleasure of living in community with several Lasallian Brothers in Colombo, where I witnessed their active involvement in their community and genuine commitment to the five core Lasallian principles. In addition to working alongside the Brothers, I had the chance to teach English at St. Joseph’s College. My seventh grade students were rambunctious yet always eager to learn. While I enjoyed teaching in the classroom, my favorite times were hanging out with the boys after school hours to practice their English and for them to give me insight on their own culture. Traveling to Sri Lanka has been by far my most favorite experience and I can’t wait to return someday.”
