Message From the President Fall 2017 Dear Alumni, Families and Friends: Over the course of the past two years, I have had the honor of meeting with alumni, families and friends of Christian Brothers High School as part of the quiet phase of the Securing the Future Campaign. These meetings are designed to inspire early support of this vital fundraising endeavor (see page 4). I find though, that they often end up inspiring me. When graduates tell me of the profound difference the Brothers made in their lives, I want to work even harder to ensure that Lasallian Catholic education continues to thrive in Sacramento. When parents tell me of the myriad of ways in which our faculty and staff inspired, challenged and cared for their sons and daughters while preparing them for success in college and life, I am emboldened by our mission of excellence in education. And, when friends of the school share with me their belief that the school merits the support of the community based on the impact its students and graduates have had on the greater Sacramento area and beyond, I am mindful of the privilege I enjoy of working in service of this incredible mission and steadfast in my commitment to securing the future of this sacred institution. Today, the school is strong. CB is the largest Catholic high school in the region with students joining us from 74 zip codes and five foreign countries. The academic programs have never been stronger as evidenced by five consecutive years on the Washington Post’s list of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools.” CB also leads the region in need-based tuition assistance with 423 students receiving $2.7 million in assistance this year. We cannot, however, rest on our laurels. And we cannot carry on this mission alone. I am grateful to the parents and guardians who entrust us with the hearts and minds of their children. I am also grateful to the alumni, families, businesses and friends who give so generously to ensure that we continue to thrive into our 142nd year and beyond. This issue of Connection includes an Annual Report of Gifts (see page 20) to recognize donations given between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017. Every name represents a vital partner in our efforts. Please know that we are careful stewards of your gifts and continue in our commitment to fiscal responsibility while maintaining the tradition of the excellent, value-centered learning at the heart of a Christian Brothers education.
“We are grateful to all who partner with us in this sacred endeavor of Lasallian Catholic education. Thank you for all that you do to ensure that CB is the place to be in spring and always.“
Live Jesus in our Hearts!

Christian Brothers Announces Securing the Future Campaign Just three years after opening the spectacular George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center, Christian Brothers High School announced its next bold move in publicly launching the Securing the Future Campaign – an $11.8 million endeavor to construct a synthetic turf field and all-weather track, grow the endowment and improve campus infrastructure. President Lorcan Barnes shared the news at the annual Ambassadors’ Club Dinner, held on October 30, announcing that $7.2 million has already been raised toward the goal. “We want generations of young people to benefit from Lasallian Catholic education for years to come. Enrollment is vital to the long-term sustainability of the school,” says Barnes. “Ensuring that programs and facilities are in place to attract families is critical to securing the future of Christian Brothers High School. The Securing the Future Campaign is designed to help do just that.” “Christian Brothers today is better than it has ever been,” says Securing the Future Campaign Chair, Willie Nolan ’69. “Enrollment and academics are strong. The athletic programs brought home seven CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championships, and the arts programs are thriving. Best of all, the steadfast commitment of the faculty, staff and administration to the Brothers’ Lasallian Catholic mission ensures that graduates are faith-filled global citizens poised to succeed in college and inspired to make a difference in the world. This campaign really does secure the future of this sacred place and I hope everyone will get involved.”

BUILDING ON PAST SUCCESS In the late 1990’s, school leaders conducted an in-depth needs assessment which established a 15-year master plan to expand and revitalize the campus. Phase I of the project focused on raising funds for the critical addition of the Science, Math and Technology wing which opened its doors to students in 2002. Phase II funded the critical addition of the Jack Witry Field House (2008), the George Cunningham ‘40 Performing Arts Center (2014) and the Chapel of St. Joseph (2015). Also during that time, the school: • Modernized facilities to include air conditioning in all classrooms, the gym, and the cafeteria; • Built an athletic training room; • Relocated international language classrooms to the space that previously housed the small theater and library; • Built a new guidance center; • Added a front office; • Created a Lasallian Student Life Office to house Campus Ministry, Christian Service, and Student Activities; • Built two engineering labs; • Opened the Victor and Phela Vesci Strength & Fitness Center; • Constructed the Virgil and Faye Petrocchi Learning Commons. Over the course of the past 17 years, CB has invested more than $20 million in campus additions and improvements. Thanks to the generosity of alumni, families and friends, the school currently carries no debt while ensuring students have the facilities essential to discovering and fostering their God-given gifts.

A NEW VISION
IMPROVED ATHLETIC FACILITIES
CB exists to provide an excellent Lasallian Catholic education that inspires and empowers young men and women while preparing them for success in college and life. In strategically planning for the future, school leaders began work on creating a new 15-year campus master plan in 2013. After consulting with community stakeholders and architectural and building professionals, school leaders identified the following priorities for the next few years:
Education at Christian Brothers extends beyond the classrooms into the athletic arena. From early on, the school’s athletic programs provided students with life lessons in leadership, teamwork and perseverance – all skills crucial to success in college and the workplace. This year, more than 700 of the school’s 1,166 students will have participated in one or more of the school’s 29 sports.
• Improved athletic facilities; • Endowment growth; • Infrastructure improvements.
6 CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION
In its current state, the school’s athletic fields do not meet the needs of its physical education classes and student athletes. Nor are CB’s outdoor athletic facilities comparable to facilities at other schools. Because turf grass managers recommend against using a natural field for more than 20 – 24 hours per week, practice time for CB’s athletes, and opportunities for sharing facilities with CB’s physical education classes, junior programs and Catholic elementary schools are quite limited.

Moving forward, this bold new vision allows Christian Brothers’ students to thrive in a vibrant, first-class campus, with the best-available spiritual, academic and co-curricular education.
Infrastructure Improvements
ENDOWMENT GROWTH
INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS
Tuition and fees at CB are $13,690 this year. This not only presents a challenge for low-income families, but for middle income families as well. The administration, faculty and staff work hard to balance mission-centered excellence with affordability. Unfortunately, the cost of tuition and fees presents a hardship for many families.
As enrollment has grown to 1,166 today, so has the need for improved parking. Programs like Junior Falcons Football & Cheer, diocesan and middle school events help strengthen community outreach and long-term enrollment, but also place extra demands on limited parking facilities. CB needs to ensure a more efficient traffic flow and greater parking capacity. Further, from a safety and good-neighbor perspective, ensuring that students and visitors have adequate on-campus parking alleviates a need for parking on the surrounding streets.
An essential component of the Lasallian mission is its insistence on education for all, regardless of their ability to pay. The District of San Francisco New Orleans places a priority on service to the poor and emphasizes outreach to the most socioeconomically disadvantaged in our community. CB proudly leads the region in tuition assistance. More than seven percent of CB families live below the federal poverty level. This year, 423 students receive $2.7 million in needbased financial aid. Of that amount, approximately $425,000 comes from endowment earnings. Growing the endowment allows for continued support and growth in the tuition assistance program.
HELP SECURE THE FUTURE… An innovator in education, St. John Baptist de La Salle recognized the critical importance of meeting student needs. As such, our Lasallian mission calls us to continually ask the question, “What do students need?” Moving forward, this bold new vision allows Christian Brothers’ students to thrive in a vibrant, first-class campus, with the best-available spiritual, academic and co-curricular education. “Christian Brothers is such a special place,” says Securing the Future Campaign Advance Gifts Chair, Steve Mahaney ’69. “In order for it to thrive, we need people to step forward and contribute, knowing that it will make a big impact on the lives of generations of students.”

“Sweet Charity” It was a “sweet” two-week run for “Sweet Charity” in the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center. Jenn Roberts ’18 stole the show as Charity Hope Valentine, a dance hall hostess who aims to elevate her position in the work force. A string of bad relationships has not helped her dreams for a better life, but with the support of her friends, Helene and Nicke, she always picks herself up and moves forward. A cast of 21 students performed their hearts out, putting on six stellar performances for a packed house. Bravo to our student thespians! “This year’s show was fantastic in so many ways, from the talent of our students to the complexity and beauty of our sets. It truly was a show not to be missed! The standing ovations after each showing are a testament to all the hard work and dedication our student actors put into the show,” says Heather Christianson ’01, theatre manager.
CB Wins Big at Elly Awards! LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN BY: CASEY LOFTUS ’17
Casey Loftus ’17 is a recent CB grad who contributed to “Connection” magazine in spring 2017 with his piece, “A Banner Year,” highlighting CB’s historic fall and winter sports seasons. Loftus was a student writer in the inaugural Sports Broadcasting class at Christian Brothers. Students in this course write articles focused on CB sports teams, players and game recaps, as well as broadcast games and generate social media content. Before heading off to begin his college career at University of Florida, Loftus provided an in-depth recap of Christian Brothers’ fantastic spring sports season exclusively for “Connection” magazine. Read more from our Sports Broadcasting students at cbhs-sacramento.org.
Christian Brothers’ sports made headlines throughout the fall and winter months as women’s basketball, volleyball, and golf, along with men’s cross country and water polo, won CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championships. A historic football season brought the Falcons a victory shy of a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section crown for the first time since 1983. With five new banners on display in the Ron Limeberger ’53 Gymnasium, and the school year ending, one might expect sports to be put on the back burner; but not this year. Men’s volleyball rolled through Capital Athletic League action with only one blemish to finish with a 9-1 record and a league championship. The senior heavy team was elated with their success, but knew they were capable of much more. Captain Marcus Cepeda ’17 believes it was this confidence that fueled the squad’s postseason run. “We knew that we could beat every team that we played,” states the senior setter. “We all knew we had the skill to win.” The Falcons earned the second seed in the D-III Sac Joaquin playoffs and eased into the championship game, dropping just one set along the way. On May 20, Cepeda and the Falcons took on the Golden Sierra Grizzles seeking CB’s first ever section title in men’s volleyball. The Grizzlies had bested the Falcons twice during the regular season, but this day would be different. CB came out strong to start the match, breezing through the first two sets. Despite losing the third set, the Falcons rallied back to win the decisive fourth set and claim the section championship. With the pain of the previous year’s section title defeat to Manteca High School still on their minds, CB baseball stepped up to the plate to go the distance. While

many students were finalizing summer vacations and preparing for graduation, Falcons baseball finalized something else: a shot at redemption. Senior utilityman Rudy Mendoza ’17 believes the desire to avenge the previous season’s shortcoming is what spurred the “Boys in Blue” to a section title. “I think redemption was the key to our success. We found ourselves in the same situation as the year before and didn’t want to feel the pain of losing in the final again.” A near perfect 25-1 regular season record set the stage for the playoffs. After brushing past Sierra in the first round, the Falcons encountered a familiar foe, Manteca. The Buffaloes had played villain in the previous year’s title game, and this season were CB’s semifinal matchup. The Falcons had one foot in the final following an 8-4 victory over the Buffs, but dropped the second game of the best of three series, setting up a decisive game three. With ace pitcher Tanner Cunha ’17 unavailable on the mound, the Falcons were on thin ice. However, through resilience and other players stepping up, CB emerged with a 4-3 victory. Tony Zupo Field in Lodi, where the Falcons’ dreams had been dashed the year before, was once again the site of the section final game. The Oakdale Mustangs were again the only team standing in the way of CB and another section crown. On the gridiron, the Mustangs crushed Christian Brothers’ hearts back in November, but the baseball diamond would prove to be a different story. With Cunha back on the mound for the Falcons, the team emerged energized and eager for another shot at a blue banner. Scoreless until the bottom of the third, catcher Diego Black ’17 stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs.
Standing on third base ninety feet from home plate, Alex LeForestier ’17 will forever remember what happened next. “I remember turning around and watching the ball sail far down the left field line and hoping that it would stay fair.” And stay fair it did, Black’s grand slam — his first homer of the year — broke the game open and gave the Falcons a 4-0 advantage. Cunha kept things steady on the defensive side of the ball, and the dog pile following the game’s final out exemplified how much it meant to him and his teammates. The 5-2 victory closed the chapter on one of the best baseball teams in Christian Brothers’ history, and wrote the last word in CB’s banner year. The list of the baseball team’s accomplishments grew even longer in the weeks following their title game triumph. Cal-High Sports named the Falcons the D-III state champions. The Sacramento Bee, MaxPreps and Cal-High Sports all honored Head Coach Rich Henning ’78 for his contributions to his team’s success, naming him Coach of the Year. MaxPreps also named Black and Cunha to the All-Northern California First Team. The Sacramento Bee also named Black and Cunha to the All-Metro First Team along with LeForestier. Leadoff hitter Caeden Laffan ’17 was named to the second team, while Mendoza, Drew Taylor ’18, Jacob Tucker ’18, and Kade McKechnie ’18 earned honorable mentions. The 2016-17 school year was one for the athletic record books at Christian Brothers High School. With seven section titles won, football history made, 12 graduates moving on to play sports at the collegiate level, and many rising athletes with their eyes on banners this coming year, it’s clear that CB is the place to be a student-athlete!

CB Welcomes Principal Chris Orr Christian Brothers High School is pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Orr as the 48th Principal of the school. His ties and personal commitment to Christian Brothers run deep, as his wife Tashia ’90, brother Mark ’94, sister Tia ’95 and his son, Nicolas ’17 are graduates. Orr’s son Solomon ’20, is a current sophomore at CB. Growing up, Orr frequently attended Christian Brothers events with his family. He attended St. Anne’s School first through eighth grade and participated in Parochial Athletic League (PAL) football. Friday nights were reserved for CB football in the Orr household, “If CB was playing football, we were there. I remember going to games to cheer on the boys and to watch my cousin, Bruce Slaughter ’81, play for coach Jeff Tisdel ’74. Then on Saturday mornings, I would play in my PAL football games and the CB football boys would be there to referee. Many of my best childhood memories are in one way or another tied to CB.” With CB being such a part of his childhood, it made sense that Orr would attend. However, it was only his father’s decision to coach football at John F. Kennedy High School that led Orr to change his mind at the last minute and attend Kennedy. Yet, he never forgot the CB community he was born and raised in. Chris Orr comes to Christian Brothers with 15 years of experience in education as a teacher, coach, dean of students, athletic director, assistant principal and principal, primarily in the charter school realm. He most recently served as Principal at Langston Hughes Academy, a charter academy located in Stockton.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to combine my educational vocation, Catholic faith and passion for Christian Brothers High School in this vital role.” CB PRINCIPAL CHRIS ORR
Orr participated in an in-depth examination of Lasallian philosophy over the summer at the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies at Manhattan College in New York. Buttimer is an intensive, threeyear Lasallian education and formation program that studies the life, work and spirituality of Saint John Baptist de La Salle and the origins of the Lasallian educational mission. “I knew that Christian Brothers was a special place,” says Orr. “I recognized that it was the only place I wanted to entrust with the sacred partnership of educating my sons. At Buttimer, I learned just how intentional the Brothers are in building these incredible communities where young people learn and thrive. This is no accident, this is 300 years of educational excellence.” “Chris Orr is a talented and dedicated educator with a strong desire to lead and serve,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “His personal character, professionalism and resolute dedication to our mission are exemplary. Together we look forward to building on CB’s 141-year tradition of excellent education in a faith-filled community.” “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to combine my educational vocation, Catholic faith and passion for Christian Brothers High School in this vital role,” says Orr. “CB holds an important place in the hearts of my family members and generations of families across the region. It is an incredible honor to be entrusted with the stewardship of continuing the school’s unparalleled legacy and Lasallian Catholic mission.”

2017 Lasallian Educator of the Year JOHN RILEY-PORTAL
A look of complete surprise and shock washed over Mr. John Riley-Portal’s face as he heard his name announced by CB President Lorcan Barnes as the 2017 Lasallian Educator of the Year. Students wildly chanted his initials “J.R.P” and cheered as he approached the stage to accept the honor. Riley-Portal, a class counselor, began working at Christian Brothers thirteen years ago. He has since worked with hundreds of students in the classes of 2009, 2013 and 2017. In addition, he serves as a counselor, confidant, cheerleader and friend. He is also the program coordinator for the Brother David Brennan, FSC, program, providing support for those students receiving full tuition assistance. “While the school has increased in enrollment size and new buildings have gone up since the Class of 2009 started in 2005, the Lasallian spirit of a nurturing environment based on the Gospel and the five Lasallian Core Principles remains strong as ever,” says Riley-Portal. “So long as we continue to adhere to this Lasallian spirit of teaching and caring for our students, I believe the future of the school will be strong and we will continue to be highly successful in preparing our students for college and life.” Natalia Schorn ’00, CB teacher, sees Riley-Portal as an example of God’s intervention in students’ lives, “Mr. Riley-Portal uses love and guidance, often interspersed with discipline, to show his students the way. He is blessed with the gift of discernment, which aids him in identifying what truly challenges a child. Students approach him with any number of difficulties ranging from finances, learning disabilities, family struggles, and personal hardships.”

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION 21
2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT
Stephen’69 & Kathleen Mahaney NAMED 2017 AMBASSADORS OF THE YEAR Christian Brothers High School celebrated its most generous supporters at the 33rd annual Ambassadors’ Club Dinner held on October 30, at the Croatian American Cultural Center. Attendees enjoyed music by harpist Alanna O’Neill ‘19, followed by a delicious dinner and presentation of the Ambassadors of the Year award to Steve’69 and Kathleen Mahaney. “I graduated in 1969,” says Steve. “Back then, the Brothers had a big influence on my life. I was not an exceptional student, and I certainly blossomed later. The Brothers, however, conveyed a powerful message that has stayed with me my entire life and that was to live my life as a Christian, a true Christian, to treat others with respect and be inclusive. Because of that, I always wanted to give back. Early on, I wasn’t in a position to do much. Back then, I was busy building a business and raising my family. Today, I feel excited about the contributions I can make on the board, financially, and now, as the co-chair of the Advance Gifts Committee and chair of the Steering Committee for the Securing the Future Campaign.” “Education is key and it is one of the best gifts you can give,” says Kathleen. “High school is a difficult time for kids. Society has changed and young people really need an environment where they feel welcome and secure. They really feel that and can thrive at Christian Brothers.” “I remember when our kids were attending Catholic colleges,” said Steve. “I was having a conversation with my mother about the amount of money I was spending. She looked at me and said, ‘Can you think of a better way to spend it?’ She was right, there isn’t a better way to spend it.” “We really believe in the mission of Christian Brothers and the opportunities it provides to change,” says Kathleen. “Steve and Kathleen are very generous people,” says President Lorcan Barnes. “Steve generously gives of his time as a member of the Board of Trustees. And, for the last 18-plus months, he

has served as chair of the Steering Committee and participated in numerous meetings with potential benefactors as a co-chair of the Advance Gifts Committee for the Securing the Future Campaign. Together, Steve and Kathleen have financially supported current and past capital campaigns, and give generously in support of tuition assistance.” “This school is such a special place,” says Steve. “In order for it to thrive and continue to welcome and embrace the marginalized, we all need to step forward and make a gift. When I agreed to co-chair the Advance Gifts Committee and chair the Steering Committee, I didn’t really know what I was getting into. But, I have really enjoyed it. I have to say, I don’t really feel comfortable asking for money, but I strongly believe in this mission and it has been so rewarding. Also, the phenomenal people I have been working with, the co-chairs on the Advance Gifts Committee, Lon ’73 and Mary Ann Burford, and other members of the Steering Committee, John Nunan and Carrie Vellutini, have been so much fun.” “Steve and Kathleen’s generosity over many years has been a blessing,” says Barnes. “Their ongoing support of tuition assistance has made it possible for children to attend CB who would otherwise not have that opportunity. They have such an enthusiastic appreciation for our mission and I am forever grateful for Steve’s leadership of the Securing the Future Campaign. We proudly congratulate Steve ’69 and Kathleen Mahaney as Ambassadors of the Year.” “We really don’t feel comfortable being recognized in this way,” says Kathleen. “But, it is such an honor.” “We really are more behind the scenes people,” says Steve. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would be named Ambassadors of the Year. But, I feel so excited about making the contributions that we can make and it is really fulfilling work to draw in support for this wonderful institution.” Ambassadors’ Club members donate a minimum of $1,876 (to correspond with the school’s founding year) each year. To learn more, please contact Nancy Smith-Fagan, director of advancement, at (916) 733-3608 or nsmithfagan@cbhs-sacramento.org.

Christian Brothers High School earned a place on the Washington Post’s list of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” for the fifth consecutive year. Using a Challenge Index formula designed to identify schools who challenge their students academically, author Jay Matthews ranks high schools from across the country, looking at the ratio of college-level tests given and the student body size of each school. Also noted are the percentages of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one Advanced Placement test during their high school career, called equity and excellence (E&E). With rigorous academics molding students into college-ready graduates, CB continues to be the place to be! CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION 23

DONOR PROFILE
Cynthia Gandy ‘78 & Joseph Hill RETURNING TO SERVE Attend an alumni event at Christian Brothers High School and you will likely find the smiling faces of Cynthia Gandy ’78, a proud Bishop Manogue alumna, and Joseph Hill, honorary CB alumnus. Gandy and Hill are active volunteers and Gandy serves on the CB Alumni Association Board . The couple also consistently donates to the school in support of tuition assistance. One would think such an involved pair would have a student currently at CB. Yet their children, Joe ’11 and Camille ’14, have graduated and are off doing great things in college and the world. What is it that keeps these two alumni parents coming back to Christian Brothers? For Joseph, it’s the warm, familiar community, “The rich fellowship and strong sense of community at CB is unlike anywhere else. As a parent, I saw how this school helped my kids grow and blossom into the hard-working adults they are today. I continue to support CB because it did so much for my children and my family, and I want to make sure someone else has the same opportunity to attend Christian Brothers.” For Gandy, Christian Brothers evokes feeling of “home” and familiarity, “Going back to when I was a young girl at St. Anne’s School, I often came to visit my older brothers at CB. This place has such a rich tradition in Sacramento and my family. The buildings may have changed and new families join the community, but that same spirit of Christian Brothers is strong and everlasting. That’s what fuels my passion and keeps me coming back for more.” Gandy works as an insurance agent for State Farm Insurance in Elk Grove and Hill works for the State Controller’s Office. Even with full-time jobs and busy schedules, Gandy and Hill always make time to give back to Christian Brothers.
“I encourage people to find their niche and the place, whether it be an event or during the work week, where you feel you can help the most.” “It is all about taking small steps into the world of volunteering at CB,” says Gandy. “I encourage people to find their niche and the place, whether it be an event or during the work week, where you feel you can help the most. Volunteering is a great experience! There are so many wonderful people involved in the Alumni Association Board and who volunteer regularly.” “The thing is, it doesn’t require a ton of time to give back,” explains Hill. “All it takes is helping for a couple of hours at an event. The small donation of your times makes a huge impact and helps Christian Brothers continue the good work they do for so many students who deserve to be here.”

John Arbuckle ‘82 PAYING IT FORWARD Life as a kid wasn’t always easy for John Arbuckle ’82, whose family financial background was “bleak.” Yet with the help of tuition assistance, he was given the chance to attend Christian Brothers, “Having the opportunity to go to a private high school was life-changing for me as a teenager. The way that the faculty supported students and had such a positive, hopeful outlook on the future was different from anything I had experienced before.” Arbuckle ran track and played football for Christian Brothers before earning a football scholarship to Idaho State. He credits his ability to attend college and his success in business to Christian Brothers High School and the help he received from the school community. Most importantly, he credits the financial support he was given. Because of the lasting impact Christian Brothers had on his life, Arbuckle has an immense passion for giving back to the school and supporting students who shared his circumstances. He knows from experience that his support is changing the life of a student and setting them on a new life trajectory. “When you donate resources to a cause, you can’t always see the impact your gift is making,” he states. “However, this is not the case at Christian Brothers. Seeing students succeed and graduate with the confidence, knowledge and skills for college and beyond is a direct result of your contributions. Your support for CB and tuition assistance makes a world of difference to a kid just looking for their opportunity to thrive.” Arbuckle was given an opportunity to attend CB thanks to the generosity of someone else, an act which inspires his giving today. John makes monthly contributions to support tuition assistance at Christian Brothers High School. With two daughters in college, giving isn’t always easy, yet he is passionate about making Christian Brothers a reality for all students. “We are so grateful for the generosity of John Arbuckle and all our donors,” says Nancy Smith-Fagan, director of advancement. “We’ve found that monthly, recurring donations are a

Small monthly donations add up to a big impact at Christian Brothers.” “I give because CB is close to my heart. Someone else gave and got me where I am today, and I want to pay it forward for another CB student.” Arbuckle continues, “If you give a little piece of yourself often, it adds up, and the value of that gift is exponential if everyone were to do it. I give a little piece of myself to CB in hopes that today’s students will give in the future.”

DONOR PROFILE
Nicole Brousseau PARENT, DONOR AND TEACHER With nervous fingers, science teacher Nicole Brousseau logged into her computer to check the results of her students’ achievement on the Advanced Placement Biology exam. For the first time in her seven years as the AP Biology teacher, her entire class passed the exam. A feeling of pride in her students washed over her, followed by overwhelming gratitude for the people who helped make it happen. “I am just a small piece of the puzzle. The credit for this success doesn’t just go to me, but to many people at Christian Brothers,” says Brousseau. “I am thankful to have colleagues who support me and spend their time developing curriculum with me. I am grateful for school leadership who truly cares about teachers and provides the tools and continuing education necessary to help us be better for our students. I am thankful for the amazing students I get to teach and the people who help them get to CB.” She continues, “Most importantly, I am grateful for the lab equipment and materials we have at CB. Many schools do not have the funds to support their students the way we do, and I’m grateful to school supporters who provide our students with the best learning opportunities.” Teaching science to high schoolers is no easy task, especially when the right laboratory equipment isn’t available. Often, AP science students at other schools must learn the material without the hands-on lab experience due to lack of appropriate funding. At Christian Brothers, it is with the help of donors that AP Biology students perform 12 laboratory experiments a year, allowing them to better grasp the concepts and succeed on the rigorous AP exam. “Labs are the part of the class the students enjoy most because it’s where they take their ideas, along with the lessons, and put them into practice,” explains Brousseau. “The Fund-A-Project at the 2016 CB auction raised money to purchase science sensors for the classroom. We use the sensors in all the science courses and they greatly enhance the students’ lab experience. Our students could get by without these sensors, but having them makes the experiments much more dynamic.”
“I am grateful for the lab equipment and materials we have at CB. Many schools do not have the funds to support their students the way we do, and I’m grateful to school supporters who provide our students with the best learning opportunities.” Brousseau is not only an 18-year veteran science teacher at Christian Brothers, but also the parent of a current student, parent of a CB graduate, and regular donor. Her roles as a teacher, parent and supporter not only demonstrate her commitment to Christian Brothers, but provide a unique perspective on the CB experience. “As a parent, I wouldn’t want my kids to go anywhere else for high school. I truly believe in the community we have at Christian Brothers and know that my children are in the best hands when taught by my colleagues and friends. As a teacher, I see firsthand how our students learn, excel, and graduate ready to serve and make a difference in the global community. As a donor, I continue to give because I see the difference Christian Brothers makes in a student’s life. From passing an AP exam to earning acceptance to college, Christian Brothers is the place where students achieve more than they ever thought possible. And to be a part of all this is undoubtedly a gift from God.”

The La Salle Club hit a hole-in-one with its second annual Christian Brothers Family & Friends Golf Tournament on June 2 at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento. Over 120 CB supporters participated in the event played on the Alastair Mackenzie course. The event, sponsored by Rex Moore/Brock Littlejohn ’85, W.F. Gormley and Sons Funeral Chapel, Rick ’74 and Pat ’07 Gormley, Friends of CB Softball, Mike Nivens and The Limelight & John Mikacich raised money to support CB Athletics. The foursome of Nik Moser ’98, Mike Wilson, Eric Reidel and Bryan Wilsey came out victorious, shooting 16 under par. Rich Henning ’78 hit an amazing shot on hole 15, earning him just one stroke and “hole-in-one” honors for the day. The La Salle Club is a dedicated group of individuals, working to raise funds to support the CB Athletic Program through events such as the Baseball Hall of Fame Dinner and the Family & Friends Golf Tournament. In the past two years, their efforts have funded a new state-of-the-art video scorer’s table, streaming cameras in the Rob Limeberger ’53 Gymnasium, video cameras and coaches’ headsets, team travel for nonleague tournaments, and other equipment.

This event would not be possible without the dedication of event chair Miamah Reed ’05, Nancy Smith-Fagan, director of advancement, Yolanda Torrecillas, director of alumni giving, and the entire Alumni Association Board. I thank them for their dedication to the students and community of Christian Brothers High School.”
Attendees of the Private Reserve Tasting received the VIP treatment, arriving an hour before the main event to enjoy exclusive food and drinks, including Brother Timothy Wines. 2017 ALUMNI DINNER Same great tradition, new date! Guests soaked up the sun at the 47th annual Alumni Dinner on Saturday, June 3, at Christian Brothers High School. Alumni, family and friends enjoyed a social hour and raffle on the main lawn, complete with clear blue skies, a warm spring evening and music by The Cantaliers. Members of the Bishop Armstrong Class of 1967 were honored with Golden Diplomas presented by members of the Class of 2017 in recognition of 50 years having passed since graduation. The Honorary Alumni Award was presented to David and Linda Christianson, parents of Heather Christianson ’01, a CB faculty member and theatre manager. In addition to Linda serving on the Board of Trustees, the Christiansons have been active volunteers in CB’s theatre program. They were welcomed into the Class of 2017 and presented their awards by Ian Ferrell ’17, avid theatre student and recent graduate.

“The Honorary Alumni Award is given to individuals who emulate the Christian Brothers spirit, and generously volunteer time to the school for the benefit of the students. We expect our CB graduates to become the type of person these individuals personify. David and Linda Christianson truly embody the Christian Brothers spirit and commitment to service,” remarks President Lorcan Barnes. The esteemed Alumni Service Award, exemplifying the Alumni Association’s highest standard of giving back to Christian Brothers, was presented to not one, but seven alumni and members of the Rodriguez Family: Olga Desmangles ‘73, Connie Yanez ‘77, Nellie Plasencia ‘78, Susie Alcala ‘80, Nancy Paez ‘82, Martin Rodriguez ‘84, and Angie Jimenez ‘87. Frank LaRosa ’62 was inducted to The First Tee of Greater Sacramento Golf Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 29, in Sacramento. LaRosa, host of ESPN Radio’s “Golf to Go” segment and KVIE’s “Tee Time: Golf in Northern California,” was one of five inductees honored during a ceremony at the Haggin Oaks Golf Expo. He is twice named to the Northern California PGA’s Sports Media Person of the year and is an honorary member of the Northern California Section of the PGA of America. When he isn’t covering the local golf scene, LaRosa devotes his time to golf-related Sacramento charities including Saving Strokes and The Morton Golf Foundation. He is also the owner of Frank LaRosa & Associates Advertising and Marketing Agency. In 2016, Tim Bernardis ’75 received the “Honored One” Award from the Guardians of Culture, Memory and Lifeways International Awards Program for his work preserving Native American heritage through the Little Big Horn College Library. Bernardis is the library director at Little Big Horn College, a Native American tribal college based on the Crow Indian Reservation in Crow Agency, Montana. Over the course of several decades, Bernardis and a growing team expanded the library from 2,000 volumes to 25,000 books about Native American heritage and the Crow Tribe. He earned the honor in 2015 but was unable to accept the award in person due to a family emergency, only recently traveling to Phoenix to be honored at the annual conference.
In February 2017, Michael Berberich ’75 traveled to Washington D.C. to receive a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant for his work at Galveston College in Galveston, Texas. Berberich is an instructor and co-director of the humanities department at the college. The NEH grant will fund the “Coastal Culinary: Exploring Food Narratives” project at Galveston College, bringing together scholars and students to work in food studies, food pathways and the use of personal narratives informed by family recipes and storytelling. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is an independent federal agency created in 1965. It is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States. Berberich was not alone in receiving his funding at the Humanities Initiative in D.C., as Tim Bernardis ’75 also received NEH grant funding for his project, “Creating and Perpetuating Crow Oral History in the Classroom and Beyond,” at Little Big Horn College. The two alumni credit Christian Brothers for their inspiration to teach and their passion for humanities research. Berberich explains, “We are both proud of our Brothers connection and our Lasallian education. We both teach, and I can say beyond a doubt that the Brothers, especially Brother Edward Welch, FSC, Brother George Bertolet, FSC, Brother Philip Neri, FSC and Jack Witry, inform the ways I teach to this day.”
