Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees at Christian Brothers High School is comprised of twelve volunteers dedicated to safeguarding and advancing the school’s mission on behalf of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (De La Salle Brothers). Prior to joining the Board of Trustees, individuals undergo training in Lasallian charism (history, spirituality and philosophy of education) and Policy Governance – a model used by Lasallian schools throughout the District of San Francisco New Orleans.
“The Board is not involved in the day-to-day operations of the school, but the policies it establishes on behalf of the Brothers serve as a rudder, defining and guiding the underlying values and vision for the school’s mission,” says Board of Trustees Chair, Don Fitzgerald. “Personally, my service on the Board, including two years as Chair, has been incredibly rewarding. I am grateful to work with such a dedicated and selfless goup of extremely talented fellow Board members in a spirit of collaboration, always laser focused on the mission.”
The Board of Trustees recently announced a three-year contract renewal for president and chief executive office, Crystal LeRoy, Ed.D. Dr. LeRoy, who joined the school in 2020, is the fifth pesident, and first female to serve in the ole. CB moved to a president/principal model of leadership in 1991.
“Dr. LeRoy has repeatedly demonstrated superb leadership, vision, and tireless commitment to preparing students for success in life and college,” says Fitzgerald. “For example, over the past eighteen months Dr. LeRoy did an exceptional job leading and overseeing an ambitious Educational Visioning process, involving all constituencies of our school community, recently culminating in a five-year strategic plan identifying goals and priorities for the school, and actionable steps to carry them out. Our school and community are fortunate to have a person of Dr. LeRoy’s character, faith, integrity, and dedication at the helm of Sacramento’s longest-thriving Catholic high school.”
As President, Dr. LeRoy works closely with the school’s Board of Trustees and the De La Salle Christian Brothers’ District of San Francisco New Orleans. Her primary duties involve strategic planning, fundraising, financial management and campus development. A passionate advocate for tuition assistance, Dr. LeRoy has continued the school’s efforts to provide need-based tuition assistance, allocating $3.4 million to 532 deserving students from families who would not otherwise be able to send their children to CB.
“This great work is done together and by association with the incredible Board of Trustees, our faculty and staff, families, alumni, and supporters,” says CB President Dr. Crystal LeRoy. “It is all in service to our students, the future servant leaders of the Sacramento area and beyond. I am grateful to the Board of Trustees for their faith in me, and profoundly blessed to be given the opportunity to continue to serve our Lasallian Catholic mission and this wonderful community.”

“To be entrusted with the teaching of the young is a great gift and grace of God.” St. John Baptist de La Salle
Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends:
What a joy it is to “reconnect” with all of you in this new edition of Connection magazine. Much has happened in our world since the spring of 2020 issue. This has been a trying time for so many in our community and world, and there are certainly challenges ahead. However, as I look forward, I am filled with hope and gratitude. My hope comes fom our wonderful students, who continue to amaze me with their resilience, intelligence, kindness, and faith. My deep gratitude extends to the families, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends who have partnered and persevered with us through the uncertainty of online and hybrid classes, individual and outdoor graduation celebrations, deferred Ambassador celebrations, remote auctions, compacted athletic seasons, canceled retreats, and so much more. Every setback and challenge has made our full return to campus and the treasured activities at the heart of the Christian Brothers’ experience that much sweeter.
This community is truly a blessing. Our dedicated faculty, staff, and administrators create an environment that allows every student to thrive, as they are valued for exactly who they are and encouraged to find and foster their unique God-given gifts. They are encouraged to share their gifts with others in the classroom, through clubs, Christian service, and as athletes, artists, and members of the community.
Today, CB remains the largest Catholic high school in the region, with more than 1,100 students joining us from 75 zip codes and four countries. Our faith life is vibrant, with Liturgies, Masses, retreats, and Christian service opportunities for all. While many schools boast exclusivity, Christian Brothers High School boasts inclusivity. The most recent list from “Niche Rankings” identifies the Most Diverse Private High Schools in America. According to “Niche,” CB ranks number one locally and in the top 1 percent nationally based on ethnic, economic, and cultural diversity statistics and opinions from both students and parents. Our academic programs are strong, with this year’s graduates earning admission to Harvard, UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, Loyola Chicago, St. Mary’s College of California, and many more colleges and universities across the country. Put simply, CB is the place to be and belong!
We have a proud history of graduating young men and women who become models for transforming the world. We also realize that it is imperative that we have a documented vision that guides us, ensuring that our longstanding history of Lasallian Catholic education triumphs in these ever-changing times. Over the past 18 months, a tremendous amount of work has led us to create A Vision for Our Future, a strategic plan that we believe positions us for success now and well into the future. (See page 3.) We are profoundly thankful for the many families, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends who made this bold project a reality.
Please know that I am honored, humbled, and profoundly blessed to serve as president of Christian Brothers High School. In the words of the Founder, to be entrusted with the teaching of the young is a great gift and grace of God!
Live Jesus in our hearts!
Dr. Crystal LeRoy, PresidentChristian Brothers High School Announces New Principal
Christian Brothers High School is pleased to announce the appointment of David Perry, Ed.D. as Principal effective July 1, 2023. Dr. Perry takes over for Mr. Julian Elorduy ’03, who has been serving as Interim Principal since November 2022.
Dr. Perry comes to CB with 15 years of experience working in and leading Catholic schools. Since 2018, he has served Cristo Rey High School in Sacramento as the President and CEO. Prior to Cristo Rey, he led Saint Patrick- Saint Vincent High School in Vallejo as President and CEO, Principal of Saint Andrew School in Florida, and Saint James School in Davis. Before stepping up to leadership positions, Dr. Perry built his educational foundation in the classroom as a teacher. Dr. Perry graduated from St. Mary’s College of California, a Lasallian Catholic institution that is owned and operated by the Christian Brothers. At St. Mary’s, Dr. Perry earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees, and was inspired by the Christian Brothers and Lasallian Catholic charism to answer the call to work in education. We are grateful that his calling has now brought him “home” and believe his leadership, faith, and focus will best serve our students, families, faculty, and staff for years to come.
“It was the Christian Brothers at St. Mary’s College that encouraged me, formed me, and allowed me to be open to hearing God’s call to be an educator,” says Dr. David Perry. “Now, to live my vocation in a Lasallian community is truly a gift. I feel a deep calling to the work of Lasallian Catholic Education, and I am humbled and honored to have been invited by Crystal LeRoy, Ed.D. to join the Christian Brothers team.”
This announcement is the culmination of an extensive, thoughtful, and inclusive search and hiring process led by Dr. Crystal LeRoy. That process began with an intensive cause analysis that included input from faculty and staff regarding what we need in a principal and leader of our school. In January, Dr. LeRoy gathered a large principal search committee that included Board of Trustee members, President’s Cabinet members, teachers, faculty, parents, and friends of Christian Brothers. After extensive interviews with three highly qualified candidates, D. LeRoy and the search committee concluded that Dr. Perry will best serve our community as principal.
“David Perry comes to CB with a deep and longstanding dedication to, and appreciation for, our Lasallian Catholic mission,” says Dr. LeRoy. “His education, when coupled with his deep Catholic faith and extensive experience as a Catholic school administrator and teacher, ideally position him to lead our school in providing the best possible spiritual and educational experience for our students, now and in the future.”
Along with a love for Lasallian Catholic Education, Dr. Perry’s strong connection to CB extends to his own family, as his three children currently attend the school. As a parent, he is active in the community and brings a unique perspective to the principal role.
“As a parent for the past three and a half years, I have had the pleasure of seeing the positive impact the Christian Brothers community has had on my children, and I look forward to having a hand in providing that experience to other families,” says Dr. Perry. “I am also excited about building relationships with all the other members of the CB community and collaborating to further our mission.”
Christian Brothers is looking forward to welcoming Dr. David Perry as Principal this summer and sharing more information about him in the future.
A Vision for Our Future: Christian Brothers Unveils Five-Year
Strategic
After an 18-month educational visioning process that included key community stakeholders, Christian Brothers High School unveils its five-yearstrategic plan, A Vision for Our Future.
Christian Brothers High School is the place to be. As the longestthriving high school in Sacramento, the largest Catholic high school in the region, and one of the most diverse private schools in the nation, CB provides excellent academics and co-curriculars in a nurturing, faith-filled envionment. Holding true to its Lasallian Catholic mission, 46 percent of the student body receives need-based tuition assistance. In the 2022-23 school year, CB is providing $3.4 million to 532 students.
Over the past few years, CB and the rest of the world have been put to the test. COVID-19 changed life as we knew it. 2020 will be remembered by many as a time of uncertainty, illness, loss, isolation, and civil unrest. It was an immensely trying time. Thanks to the school’s incredible faculty and staff, remarkable students, supportive families, alumni, loyal friends, and dedicated Board of Trustees, Christian Brothers persevered. In the true spirit of
collaboration, school leaders and teachers quickly forged a new educational plan. CB only missed one day of instruction when transitioning to virtual learning. That fall, CB was among the first schools to welcome students back on campus with a hybrid learning plan. But as students returned to in-person instruction, it was apparent that their needs had changed. It was time to adapt once more, and CB was ready to rise to the challenge.
Educational Visioning: An Ambitious Project
In the fall of 2021, just one year into her tenure at Christian Brothers, President Crystal LeRoy, Ed.D., embarked on an ambitious but critical endeavor to create a five-year strategic plan. The goal was not to change Christian Brothers High School but to build on the tradition of excellence that started in Sacramento back in 1876.
A fundamental component of Lasallian education is innovation: to continually ask, What do our students need? Guided by the Lasallian Catholic charism and wisdom of the Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, Dr. LeRoy worked to bring together community members and stakeholders to answer this essential Lasallian question.
“It was important to us that we hear from students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends in this educational visioning process,” says Dr. LeRoy. “We got people involved through surveys, stakeholder groups, and opportunities to participate in listening sessions. The opportunity for feedback and dialogue extended throughout our larger community.”
“Dr. LeRoy was brave and courageous. I think those are the best ways to describe embarking on this process,” says Board of Trustees Chair Don Fitzgerald. “She was committed when she started at the school to create and implement a long-range plan. It was a difficult time to start something like this because of the limitations surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, but she persevered, and the results show that courage and dedication.”
A Community Effort
In collaboration with Partners in Mission and key community stakeholders, Dr. LeRoy launched the intensive educational visioning process. They formed an Educational Visioning Steering
Committee, chaired by longtime educators Susan Larson, Board of Trustees Vice Chair, and Renee Malaki ’76, to focus on eight key areas or domains:
Academics/Technology: Dr. Heather Alumbaugh and Dr. Heidi Harrison
Philanthropy: Mrs. Mary Ann Burford, Mrs. Kamal Khaira, and Ms. Laine Himmelmann ‘06
Enrollment: Mr. John Fondale ’83, Mr. Aldo Soriano ’99, and Mrs. Gina Vanacore ’84
Facilities/Tech: Mr. Ron Metzger and Mr. John Nunan
Finances: Ms. Marianne Evashenk and Ms. Margarita Fernandez
Governance: Mrs. Janet Ruggiero and Mr. Donald Fitzgerald
Lasallian Charism and Catholic Identity: Br. Dan Morgan, FSC, and Rev. Guillermo Hernandez
Student Life: Mrs. Stephanie Cooper-Noe and Mrs. Lisa Levasseur ‘95
“The dedication, time commitment, and expertise that Sue Larson and Rene Malaki brought to this project were truly remarkable,” says Fitzgerald. “They were called on as volunteers, they rose to the occasion, they helped interface between the consultants, Dr. Le Roy, and the domain chairs. And they just did a terrific job.
“Kudos to Dr. LeRoy and to her team who organized all of the people in the process,” says Brother Nick Gonzales, FSC, Visitor, District of San Francisco New Orleans. “It is very tempting to get a lot of people who agree with you to show up and to pat you on the back and tell you great job, keep going, and do not change a thing. But I think it is very courageous and very honest to do the opposite.”
Along with data from the school, the committee also gathered feedback from the larger CB community through surveys, roundtable discussions, and meetings in person and online. A need to enhance inclusion and belonging on campus, address mental health, and instill practical life skills were among the biggest takeaways.
“It was crucial that we have a robust and really in-depth conversation with all of our stakeholders, including students, parents, faculty, and staff, the Sacramento Diocese, the Christian Brothers, our Lasallian education partners, and parents, to get that accurate picture of where we are and where we need to go,” says Educational Visioning Steering Committee Co-Chair and Board of Trustees Vice Chair Sue Larson.
Visioning Through a Lasallian Lens
Through that process, CB identified eight key aeas of operations: academics, Lasallian Catholic identity, enrollment, philanthropy, student life, facilities, finance, and governance. Focusing on those domains, the committee hosted a two-day retreat to draft strategic goals and objectives. Throughout the collaborative process, Dr. LeRoy made sure the school’s Lasallian charism and virtues guided and influenced every level and outcome
“Our Lasallian Core Principles are the foundation of our educational vision. It is what gives us purpose,” says Dr. LeRoy. “It has been an amazing experience working in community to help shape and evolve education to meet the needs of our current students today, for the world tomorrow, and for a future we have yet to even imagine.”
“I think at the heart of this is this idea of an inclusive community,” says Brother Nick. “Because it is about meeting students where they are at — whether they learn differently, whether they are male or female, how they self-identify, whether they are persons of color or not — and giving them a quality education and taking
them from A to Z. That is very hard to do, and that is what this plan is all about.”
Crafting Nine Strategic Goals
After an 18-month long process, A Vision for Our Future was born. The five-year strategic plan outlines nine goals, with detailed objectives and action items.
Here is what CB is considering its priorities:
• Health and wellness for our students, faculty, and staff;
• Curriculum enhancements to include practical life skills, and more experiential learning;
• More visibility of our Lasallian and Catholic identity throughout our campus;
• More opportunities for service learning;
• Campus facility enhancements to address our aging buildings, shortage of classrooms and office space, and an updated cafeteria;
• And creating more spaces to live and be in community.
“Through this work and this five-year plan, we have developed a roadmap that will help us sustain our commitment to our Lasallian mission for another 150 years,” says Dr. Crystal LeRoy. “We are so grateful to everyone who helped create this plan and to those who will continue working with us to see it become a reality.”
“This five-year plan is our North Sta,” says Interim Principal Julian Elorduy ’03. “It informs the work of our teachers, it affirms the critical importance of our Lasallian Catholic charism, and it stands as a sign of faith to all as we continue the important work of inclusivity, belonging, and truly preparing our young people to leave to serve.”
From Vision to Reality
Work is already underway to ensure Christian Brothers realizes this vision. Dr. LeRoy is currently creating committees to help achieve the nine strategic goals. Each year, CB will assess its progress, take in feedback, and work in collaboration with the community to provide the best Lasallian educational experience for its students.
“If you loved Christian Brothers, then you’re going to love this plan. Because the idea is to take Christian Brothers to the next level. At the center of CB is our care for our students. We want every student, and by extension every family, to have a positive experience of being seen, heard, and loved every day,” says Brother Nick.
“What I want people to know about A Vision for Our Future is that today CB is the place to be. Tomorrow, it will be even better,” says Dr. LeRoy.

Falcons Soccer Makes History with Trifecta Including Nor-Cal State Championship
Women’s soccer began its season facing off against some of Southern California’s toughest teams at the Back Bay Invitational and ended with a trifecta of titles winning the Capital Valley Conference, Sac-Joaquin Section, and Nor-Cal State championships.
“This team was special from the very beginning,” says Co-Athletic Director Melissa Flowers, who traveled with the team to Newport Beach. “They were down a few players and came up short in the tournament. But it was clear that these players had a lot of talent and a lot of heart. They worked as a team and were determined to accomplish their goal of earning what they called the treble – all three titles.”
With 10 phenomenal seniors and a roster of skilled players, the Falcons approached their season with a goal and a mantra, “I have the desire to work hard,” says Coach Rudy Ruvalcaba, “And, we did that!”
They worked incredibly hard. The Falcons followed up their Southern California sojourn by placing first at the River Cit Tournament after not allowing a single goal. They went 7-1-2 in league, capturing the Capital Valley Conference title outright and earning home field advantage in their hunt for the section title. Bi
wins over Valley, Beyer, and Oakdale pushed them back into the section final and a ematch of 2022’s heartbreaker game, again taking on the Vista del Lago Eagles. In a hard-fought contest, the Falcons won the match 1-0 earning them the Sac-Joaquin Section D-III banner. Thus began their quest for state. As the #2 seed, Christian Brothers defeated Chico in the first ound, but the semifinal game against indsor came down to penalty kicks (10-9), as did the championship game against Cardinal Newman (5-4).
“This team is so special to me and I love each and every player,” says Coach Ruvalcaba. “They know I will always have their backs.”
Christian Brothers High School celebrated its 144th commencement, awarding diplomas to seniors and adding 271 graduates to its renowned ranks of alumni.
Commencement looked very different in 2020 due to the pandemic. Unable to gather in person, Christian Brothers High School made the decision to hold a non-traditional graduation ceremony. On the weekend of May 29, 2020, Falcon families took a tour of sorts with their graduate. Starting at the senior wall for a photo op, families then made their way to the chapel for some reflection time, then off to the theater for photos and to receive their diploma. To keep with COVID-19 guidelines, each family went into the theater by themselves. President Lorcan Barnes and thenInterim Principal Mrs. Trina Koontz presented diplomas. It was not the commencement our 144th graduating class expected, but we all came together to celebrate the best we could!
Christian Brothers High School celebrated many graduates for excellence in academics, athletics, and those who exemplified Lasallian ideals and principles. Asher Bloom and Carly Krause were Provincial’s Lasallian Awardees. Emma Busch, Reed Mercer, and Jackson Ryan were La Salle Scholar-Athlete Awardees. Tyiesha McAvoy-Jensen was awarded the De La Salle Medal for Excellence in Religion. Lauren Towne was presented with the Jack Witry Award. Mary Melarkey was presented with the Academic Excellence Award. Samantha Lingao won the Brother Ambrose Award for Lasallian Service and Loyalty.
CHRISTIAN BROTHERS’ 145TH COMMENCEMENT CELEBRATED OUTSIDE AT SUTTER HEALTH PARK
On May 14, 2021, Christian Brothers High School celebrated the class of 2021 presenting 287 seniors with diplomas. The commencement ceremony was held outdoors at Sutter Heath Park in West Sacramento due to the ongoing pandemic. We were blessed to welcome the Most Reverend Bishop Jaime Soto with us to celebrate the Baccalaureate Liturgy on CB’s main lawn with our graduates.
Many seniors earned special recognition for their outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, the arts and for exemplifying Lasallian ideals and principles. The
valedictorian for the class of 2021 was Maria Murinova and the Salutatorian was Clayton Ketcher. The Provincial’s Lasallian Awards for 2021 were presented to Olivia Chandra and Desmond Greer. Malia Gay and Nathan Smith were presented with the La Salle Scholar-Athlete Awards. The De La Salle Medal for excellence in Religion was awarded to Mariana Garcia. The Jack Witry Award was given to John Bonini and the Academic Excellence Award was presented to Maria Murinova. The Brother Ambrose Award for Lasallian Service and Loyalty went to Bella Barbosa.
Congratulations to the class of 2021!
TRADITIONS RETURN FOR
Christian Brothers High School celebrated its 146th Commencement on May 27, 2022, with 253 seniors receiving their diplomas. The CB community also celebrated the joyful return to the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament for the Baccalaureate Liturgy. Mass was followed by a family luncheon at CB and graduation ceremony at the Memorial Auditorium. This return to beloved traditions was welcomed by graduates, Falcon families, faculty and staff.
Seniors Kayla Rabey, Valedictorian, Joshua Elboom, Salutatorian, Miles Tibon, Senior Class President, represented their graduating class and participated in the commencement ceremony.
CB’S 146TH COMMENCEMENT

MEET NEW CB CO-ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, MELISSA FLOWERS
How long have you worked at CB?
I have been here for five years, but four in the athletic department.
What was your position before co-athletic director?
I served as the assistant athletic director.
When did you become co-athletic director? In April of 2022.
What went into the decision to split the leadership role?
Honestly, it was Dale Milton’s decision. He believed it would be best to have 2 AD’s, one over the men’s sports (him), and one over women’s (me). But, I worked hard! Going through sports during COVID was tough, and that is putting it lightly.
What do you love most about your job?
I love being there for the student-athletes, and being able to see their hard work and dedication show through their performance is unmatched. I am one of their biggest cheerleaders.
What do you think the athletic department is doing well?
We have our game days down to a science. We make sure we are prepared for each upcoming season, and the games go off without a hitch. We all work hard and well as a team.
What do you want the CB community to know about the athletic department? We are here for you! We are more than just rules and regulations. We truly love our community and our student-athletes.
LASALLIAN EDUCATORS
Chrys Cassetta has always felt a connection to Christian Brothers. She began her teaching career at Bishop Manogue and remained there until it closed and merged with Christian Brothers in 1990. It was then that she interviewed for a position in the English department at CB and landed the job.
CHRYS CASSETTA | 2020
After several years, Ms. Cassetta felt a personal calling to explore a nonteaching opportunity which presented itself and moved across the country to try something new. In the summer of 1994, she packed her bags and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, only to return to Sacramento a year later due to the persistence of her family missing her being close to home. When she returned to Sacramento, she accepted a job at another local Catholic high school, but ultimately realized the school was not for her and the charism was simply not the same. In 2000, the then English department chair, Kenny Kirrene, called her, asking her to return to Christian Brothers. Without hesitation, she accepted his offer and returned to CB, where she has been ever since. After nearly 25 years, Ms. Cassetta remains true to the belief that CB is the place to be.
During her tenure at Christian Brothers, Ms. Cassetta has been involved in a variety of projects. Most recently, she helped coordinate the school’s accreditation process, has been co-program director for the Scholars’ Path program, and has been moderator of several clubs. Over the past many years, she has served as summer school principal (3 years), English department chair (10 years), and has attended student retreats, Campus Ministry trips, and VENAVER service immersion trips — her favorite being a VENAVER in Tijuana, Mexico, that she chaperoned with a long-time colleague. Not only is she an accomplished teacher of literature and composition, she also served as the school’s yearbook moderator, a position she initially took on for fun and has continued to enjoy for 17 years.
She was surprised and honored to receive the recognition of Lasallian Educator of the Year. “I was shocked,” reflects Cassetta. “It never crossed my mind that I would be that person.” Fellow English teacher, Loretta Kenney, sees Cassetta as the perfect choice. “Chrys has been a force for keeping us together,” states Kenney. “How does she do that? I believe it is through her quiet strength, her unwavering discipline, and her inherent compassion... Beyond her hospitality, mirroring that of St. John Baptist de La Salle, Chrys is the glue that holds us together on campus.”
For nearly 25 years, Cassetta has enjoyed the respect and affection of her colleagues and created sincere connections with her students. “For me, Ms. Cassetta is more than just a teacher,” says Sinead Cahill ’20. “She is a role model, a mentor, and a friend. From school trips to class discussions to after-school chats, Ms. Cassetta has shown me that she cares, not only about me but about all of her students.”
Ms. Cassetta feels humbled to be able to live her vocation every day at CB. “I’m blessed to be in a place where the kids are so wonderful and enjoyable,” says Cassetta. “They never leave my classroom without saying thank you. It makes me happy to know that they will someday be in charge of our world. And when I think about my colleagues at Christian Brothers, I can only say they are giants in my life, and I am blessed to walk among them. The faculty and staff of Christian Brothers High School would do anything for the students at this school, and that makes being here all the more satisfying.”

“Right off the bat, it felt like home. It felt like a family. I went home and told my family. I had never had a welcoming at a new job like that. It was one where you got a gift bag and they’re showing you around and everyone’s so happy to have you,” reflects Khari about starting at CB five years ago, then a a systems engineer.
Khari grew up going to public school and was still a coach at River City High School when he joined the staff at CB. He used to view private schools as different, not bound to the same rules as public schools. But after becoming a CB employee and later a football coach here too, his views have changed. He says the private school experience is especially beneficial for student-athletes and their teams.
“Here at CB, I’ve yet to lose players due to grades. It’s so different than public schools.” Khari has always had a passion and talent for coaching athletics, but it was his coaching skills off the field that would earn him an awad he didn’t know he could receive.
When the pandemic hit and lockdown ensued, schools were forced to make tough decisions. At many institutions, transitioning to virtual learning was slow to begin and rocky at best. But with Khari’s tech expertise, dedication, and coaching acumen, CB made the pivot quickly and efficientl. The school only missed one day of instruction.
“I was staying up till 11:30, 12 o’clock at night assisting families.” The challenges kept coming, but Khari didn’t stop. CB would eventually transition to hybrid learning, where some students continued virtual learning while others returned to campus. That turned out to be the biggest test of not only technology, but mental health.
“You know, I had some teachers that were really anxious about it. Some were in tears. I would go sit there with them, tell them, don’t worry, we got this. I’ll be there the first few days of your class just to help you get it going, to help you lock in everything. You know, when you’re comfortable, you’ll be on your own.”
That extra mile did not go unnoticed. In the spring of 2021, Khari was named Lasallian Educator of the Year for all his hard work. Khari said he was the last to know, and realize, he had won.
“My wife knew. My mom knew. My mom was back east with all her sisters watching the ceremony live on an iPad. I had no idea. And it took me a while to realize they were even talking about me, because in my mind it just wasn’t possible, you know?”
Blindsided by the award, Khari says it took a while for it all to sink in.
“When I got home that night and really sat back and reflected on it, I got a little teary eyed because its something voted on by your peers, all the people I supported. It really told me what I meant to them.”
LASALLIAN EDUCATOR EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR | 2022
An alumnus of Christian Brothers, Julian Elorduy’s life came around full circle upon his return.
He earned his degree in comparative religion from UC Davis after graduating Christian Brothers in 2003. From there, Elorduy ‘03 started his career in education at Saint Mary School in Sacramento. He then went on to teach 7th grade at Saint Patrick Academy in Sacramento for two years and spent three years after that teaching 5th grade at Saint Leo the Great in Oakland. In the years after graduation, Elorduy says he did just about every job imaginable at a school.
“I have mostly worked in schools my whole career. I have done everything from being a janitor, an instructional aide, to a classroom teacher,” said Elorduy.
His love for education began young. Elorudy’s mother was in early education for two decades, so he spent a lot of time shadowing her in the classroom. He says he did not exactly seek out a career in education. In the Lasallian spirit, he eventually said yes to the invitation, but it wasn’t always easy.
“My early years of teaching were incredibly difficult with many long days working 10-14 hours and still feeling unsuccessful most of the time. However, I was committed to keep trying. Working in a self-contained elementary school classroom is some of the hardest (and most rewarding) work there is. I have a deep respect for elementary school educators. They are true heroes,” said Elorduy.
In 2015, Elorduy would answer another type of call, one that would bring him back to Christian Brothers High School, and the exact classroom where inspiration set the course of his career.
“Tomas Guro ‘03 messaged me through Facebook Messenger about needing a comparative religion teacher. Coincidentally, I began teaching in the exact same room, in which I took the class with Dr. Holly Peterson as a senior in 2003. It was that class that inspired me to study religion in college. If I hadn’t taken that course, I might have never ended up back at CB. It’s interesting how things come around full circle,” said Elorduy.
In the eight years since Elorduy began teaching at Christian Brothers, he has held many roles; teacher, assistant principal, interim principal, but through it all, his light and love for Lasallian education have shone brightly.
“In every interaction I have with him, and when I see him and others, is led by Lasallian Core Principles. I don’t think it is intentional, I believe it is just who he is. From the time he took leadership roles at CB, he has been respectful of everyone and is good listener,” said Courtney Hendry, math teacher.
“Julian’s efforts, especially during the pandemic, have been extraordinary. His support with digital learning and with campus safety has earned him the right to this recognition. No matter the role he is in. What he does with spirituality and student centeredness is a true Lasallian educator and role model for our entire community,” said Armando Diaz, Counseling Department Chair.
Elorduy’s willingness to step up and help in any situation, compassion and love for students and his colleagues, his dedication to the Christian Brothers community, and his faith are among the numerous reasons why he is CB’s 2022 Lasallian Educator of the Year.
“When I learned I was chosen, I was shocked and honored. It was such a joy to see my family present while I received such a treasured honor,” said Elorudy.
The Return of the CB Extravaganza!
CB’s annual party with a purpose returned on Friday, September 9, 2022, after a break due to the pandemic. The CB Extravaganza (formerly the Wine, Beer, and Food Extravaganza) saw thousands of alumni and friends come to campus for a wonderful time.
“What a thrill it was to be able to bring the CB Extravaganza back to CB,” enthuses Steve McLaughlin, director of philanthropy. “This event is so revered by our alumni, families, and friends throughout the region. After such a long break between events, the anticipation was considerable. Through the spirit and joyfulness of all our guests, the experience exceeded expectations. You could feel the energy across campus – it was a great night for CB!”
The event raised over $150,000 to support tuition assistance at Christian Brothers High School. CB leads the region in tuition assistance, providing over $3.4 million in need-based funding for our students in the 2022-2023 school year alone.
The 33rd annual event featured local wine, beer, and food vendors, as well as live entertainment from HIP Service. Local restaurants, pubs, wineries, and distribution companies donated all the food and drinks for this amazing event.
“Having a great time with our Falcon friends on our historic campus is in and of itself a treasure,” says Crystal LeRoy, Ed.D., president. “Knowing you are doing that while supporting such a great cause is doubling down on the positivity! What a fantastic way to support the mission at CB!”
A big thank you to our presenting sponsor, Sacramento Republic FC, for supporting this awesome event and Christian Brothers High School. Please turn the page for a list of all our incredible sponsors, who helped make this return of the CB Extravaganza a roaring success!

Twinkle lights, love locks, the Mona Lisa—ooh la, la! Another glamorous night spent on the CB campus, Meet Me in Paris, brought friends, family, and alumni back in support of tuition assistance at Christian Brothers. The love for our school was palpable, and our attendees once again exceeded expectations in their generosity, spirit, and passion for our students! Staff and volunteers spent hours transforming the Jack Witry Field House, the Ron Limeberger ’53 Gymnasium, and the recently revamped weight room with all the trappings of Paris, France.
“It is such a special experience to know that you are a part of changing lives,” says Steve McLaughlin, director of philanthropy. “That’s what all of our donors and volunteers do through their support of the auction. Together, we are making an impact on every student on our campus today, and on those aspiring young men and women who will grace these halls in the future.”
VIP guests began their evening under strings of romantic lights and candles for a cocktail hour in the second story weight room. Charmed by brand new equipment, March Madness on the big screen, puppies, and a student on stilts, guests mingled and posed for photos, happy to be surrounded by friends new and old. Next, the silent auction opened on the main level of the Jack Witry Field House. Amazing Parisian-themed decorations, including a 9-foottall Eiffel Tower created by CB Engineering students, and student performers creating art and playing music set an exciting tone.
The evening progressed with a delicious dinner in the Ron Limeberger ’53 Gymnasium, which was transformed into the finest Fench restaurant with white billowy streamers, twinkling lights, and gilded table trappings. The auctioneer, Jake Parnell, and master of ceremonies, John McGinnis ’76, kept the energy alive, drawing excitement and incredible generosity. Guests raised more than $500,000 for Christian Brothers’ student programs and tuition assistance.
“My husband and I have been attending the CB Annual Auction for over a decade, and it was my absolute pleasure to chair,” says Pat Lewis, auction chair. “Thank you to the talented and generous volunteers that spent countless hours planning and executing a tres magnifique evening and thank you to the entire CB community for the generous donations of goods and services. The team volunteered months of hard work and spent a whirlwind few days that helped us achieve our fundraising goal of over $500,000! This awesome display of community support benefits tuition assistance and enables all students, family, and friends to come together in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Until we meet again, keep making CB the place to be!”

OFF TO THE RACES!
After three long years, the CB Annual Auction returned on March 19, 2022, with a flourish of fanciful hats and a fervor for fundraising, and we were Off to the Races!
While the Kentucky Derby may be the most exciting two minutes in sports, CB’s Auction thrilled attendees for an entire evening. Dedicated volunteers and staff transformed the Jack Witry Field House and the Ron Limeberger ’53 Gymnasium, setting the stage for a night of fun and fundraising!
Attendees bid on fabulous silent auction items and enjoyed a delightful dinner. Auctioneer Jake Parnell and master of ceremonies, Scott Moak, Fox40 host and Sacramento Kings public address announcer, kept the energy alive and inspired generosity.
“It is such a blessing that so many of our partners believe wholeheartedly in our mission!” says President Crystal LeRoy, Ed.D. “What shone brightest at the Off to the Races Auction was the indelible spirit of our Falcon faithful and the generous commitment our community has for our students and our mission. It was an incredible evening for Christian Brothers High School, raising over half a million dollars for need-based tuition assistance!”
We thank everyone who participated both at the event and virtually for their support. Thank you to our volunteers, donors, and sponsors for making this event a galloping success!

CB Welcomes the Return of the Ambassadors’ Club Dinner
After three years, the Ambassadors’ Club Dinner returned to Christian Brothers on January 18, 2023, and with it, a chance to gather and honor some of our school’s biggest supporters!
Smiling faces, laughter, and warm embraces between friends, the Ambassadors’ Club Dinner gave alumni and supporters the chance to catch up after the busy rush of the holidays. The evening was held in the cafeteria, away from the cold and blustery weather outside. Steve McLaughlin, director of philanthropy, served as master of ceremonies for the event.
The evening began with remarks from President Crystal LeRoy, Ed.D. and a wonderful prayer from CB senior, Tanner Meade. Following was a wonderful performance from honors Chorale, under the direction of Choral Director, Christian Bohm. In the spirit of the evening, Elmer Lizarde ’16, spoke about the profound impact a Christian Brothers education has had on his life and his career.
This year’s special Ambassadors of the Year honorees were John and Susan Nunan for their unwavering support and dedication to Christian Brothers. The Nunans were first chosen in 2020, but due to the pandemic, CB was unable to publicly celebrate and honor them until this year. Please read more about how the Nunans are dedicated champions for CB,
John and Susan Nunan 2023 Ambassadors of the Year!
the Board of Trustees is to be on stage at graduation and shake the hand of every graduate. When you have an opportunity to see this incredibly united, richly diverse, bright group of young women and men poised to go out and make a difference in the world, you really see all that is possible!”
The Nunans see what Christian Brothers meant for their children and want others to have the same opportunity. “They got both their educational training and their whole-person development,” says John. “We feel so fortunate for our kids to have had that opportunity.” What inspires them to continue being active in the CB community and giving back after all these years is the tuition assistance program.
“The mission of St. John Baptist de La Salle resonated with us,” says Susan. “Christian Brothers makes it possible for students who want to go there be able to. The tuition assistance program keeps the spirit of De La Salle going.”
The Nunans’ first experience with Christian Bothers High School was as wine presenters at CB’s wine tasting event in the late 80’s. During that evening, they met many CB parents and alumni. When the time came for their sons to attend high school, John (Jady) ’99 and Bjorn ’04 set their sights on Christian Brothers. With some positive encouragement from their neighbors, good friends, and fellow Ambassadors of the Year award recipients, Willie ’69 and Sheila Nolan, John and Susan wholeheartedly supported their children’s decision. But what began as a high school choice, would soon turn into something even more special.
John retired from Unger Construction after 40 years, 28 of them as president. Susan works as a travel agent and does volunteer work in her spare time. The couple has been married for over 42 years and enjoy traveling together and being active in the Sacramento community. Long after their children graduated from high school and continued their Lasallian education at St. Mary’s College in California, the Nunans remained loyal and involved at Christian Brothers.
John and Susan Nunan are generous and faithful supporters, donating to all the school’s recent capital campaigns and sponsoring the Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza for over 10 years. In 2006, John was named an Honorary Alumnus by the Alumni Association for his dedication to the school. With his background in construction, he was involved in the Building the Tradition Campaign that funded the construction of the Jack Witry Field House and George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center. He also served on the committee for the Securing the Future Campaign where he advised on the design and construction process of the Peter P. Bollinger ’57 Stadium. He was instrumental in getting the project done on time and on budget.
John is currently on CB’s Finance Committee and has served on the Board of Trustees for seven years, two as Chair. As Chair of the Board, he particularly enjoyed learning more about Lasallian history and getting to know the Brothers in Northern California.
“I just loved being around them,” says John. “That made being on the Board really special.”
Perhaps the most memorable experience he had in this role was shaking the hand of every graduating senior at Commencement. “One of the things you are fortunate to do when you’re chair of
Having attended small public high schools themselves, the Nunans appreciate the familiar, tight-knit community at CB. “When we went to Back-to-School Night, we wanted to go back to high school!” enthuses Susan. “The kids were in a community that is so nurturing and positive. The teachers knew their students well and were very complimentary.”
“To this day, we see the way our kids are, their friends, and how they take on responsibilities,” reflects John. “They learned so many lessons at Christian Brothers. You look back and see the relationships they formed with their classmates and teachers. That just doesn’t happen everywhere.”
Beyond their children’s high school experience, John and Susan have made lifelong memories and friends throughout their time at CB. “We were humbled and honored to receive the Ambassadors of the Year award, especially knowing some of the previous ambassadors and how involved they are at the school,” says John. “It is a group of people we are appreciative of and proud to be among. We’ll always be promoters and crusaders of Christian Brothers.”
“We first tried to ecognize John and Susan as Ambassadors of the Year in 2020. Unfortunately, that was not possible with the pandemic. I’m so pleased that we are finally able to ecognize them for their remarkable dedication and generosity in sharing their time, talent, and treasure with the Christian Brothers community throughout the years,” says CB President Dr. Crystal LeRoy. “We are incredibly grateful for all they have done for CB. It is my honor to congratulate them as our 2023 Ambassadors of the Year.”

Christian Brothers High School Statement of Financial Activities For the Year Ended June 30, 2022
CB provided $3.1 million in need-base tuition assistance to 444 students in the 2021-22 school year.
2022 Alumni Dinner
Held at Christian Brothers High School on Saturday, April 9, 2022, the 50th annual Alumni Dinner was a great night for seeing good friends and building on a strong CB connection.
Alumni, family and friends gathered for a social hour on the main lawn, complete with a dinner and raffle held in th cafeteria. Members of the Class of 1970, 1971, and 1972 were honored with Golden Diplomas in recognition of 50 years of shared legacy and spirit. Historically, one class has been honored per year at each Alumni Dinner, but due to the pandemic, CB decided to honor three during this evening of fellowship.
The Alumni Service Award, the highest award bestowed by the Alumni Association given to an individual who regularly gives back to CB and helps make the community a better place, was presented to Patrick “Rick” Gormley ‘74. Gormley has been a member of the CBHS Alumni Association Board of Directors, the CB Junior Falcons Football and Cheer Board, the CBHS Golf Tournament, and is a CB Ambassador. Christian Brothers High School is deeply grateful to Rick Gormley for his commitment, resolve, and love for the school he entered to learn and left to serve.
2023 Alumni Dinner
The Christian Brothers High School 51st annual Alumni Dinner was held on Saturday, February 11, 2023. Members of the Class of 1973 were honored with Golden Diplomas in the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center in recognition of 50 years of shared legacy and spirit. Family and friends were there to celebrate this milestone achievement and joined alumni with a social hour in the Ron Limeberger ’53 Gymnasium and dinner in the CB cafeteria.
The Alumni Service Award, the highest award bestowed by the Alumni Association given to an individual who regularly gives back to CB and helps make the community a better place, was presented to Kirk Murphy ‘77. Murphy has been a member of the CB community since arriving as a sophomore in 1974. He served as president of the Christian Brothers La Salle Club, leading multiple fundraising efforts to support CB athletics and the launch of the new Hall of Fame interactive digital boards in the gymnasium lobby. Congratulations to Kirk

Fame class of Peter Bollinger ‘57, Dan Carmazzi ‘71, Coach Ray Clemons , and Megan Whetstone Panson as well as the 2022 Hall of Fame class of John Blanchard ‘71, Thomas Parilo ‘68, and Coach Dave Hoskins.
John Blanchard ‘71 spoke on behalf of the inductees. He gave a moving account of the impact CB athletic competition, teammates, and coaches had not just on the field, court, and class oom, but also his life. He reserved a special acknowledgment for the memory of CB Hall of Fame Coach Dick Sperbeck.
Family, friends, and alumni gathered in the Ron Limeberger ‘53 Gymnasium on June 18, 2022, for the Christian Brothers Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony. CoAthletic Directors, Dale Milton and Melissa Flowers, along with emcee Kirk Murphy ‘77, honored the 2020-21 Hall of

This year, 144 golfers and volunteers helped raise over $75,000 for CB athletics. Special thanks to event sponsors Alliant and The La Salle Club board member, Brock Littlejohn ‘85 of Rex Moore Electrical.
The La Salle Club is a committed group of volunteers who help raise funds to support the CB athletic program and its student-athletes through events and volunteering. On October 4, 2022, Christian Brothers High School lost a true friend. Jerry Kirrene ’53 passed away peacefully at the age of 87. Born to Joe and Florence Kirrene in 1934, Jerry spent most of his life connected in some way to the school. He graduated from CB in 1953, launched a groundbreaking archival project, was the unofficial pesident of the Brotherhood, and he and his wife, Rosemary, were the CB Ambassadors of the Year in 2019. In the past, Jerry credited his father, who joined The La Salle Club as a treasurer in 1945, with inspiring his love for the school. But it’s clear from Jerry’s contributions to CB, that he had a true servant’s heart and a dedication to the mission.
“Christian Brothers High School is forever grateful for Jerry and the Kirrene family,” says CB President Crystal LeRoy. “Their dedication to CB is inspiring. Through the years, they have been incredibly generous in sharing their time, talent and treasure in support of our mission. We humbly thank them for all they have done for our school.”
Jerry married the love of his life, Rosemary Reynolds, in 1957. The couple had 5 children together, and after spending time in the Bay Area, they returned to Sacramento in 1964 to settle down. The Christian Brothers legacy continued with two of their sons, Kenny ’78 and David ’81, and grandchildren, Kaalen ’13, Mary ’14, Jarett ’15, Remington ’17, Kamryn’18, and Keaton ’19. Their son-inlaw, Chuck Zannetti, even taught at CB for many years.
In 2009, Jerry launched what would become another legacy at Christian Brothers. He assembled a history committee comprised of former students, teachers, coaches, and parents to begin a comprehensive effort to organize and document the school’s achievements and the contributions made by CB graduates. Today, this online archive, www.cbarchives.com, contains thousands of reference items — a digital time capsule of CB shared history.
In an interview with Jerry for the 2020 Spring edition of Connection magazine, Jerry said, “I want younger students to know they are a part of this incredible legacy. I want the

students to know they are really important to us. Helping them understand that is really important to me.”
That important work continues to this day. Keith Cherry ’82 has taken up Jerry’s mission, serving as Archivist for Christian Brothers. Located in Bertram Hall, the Kirrene Family Archive, is a treasure trove of CB history.
“Jerry was an amazing force of good cheer and goodwill for CB, a pillar of our school,” says Cherry ‘82. “Given his appreciation for our school’s history, I’m in awe of the gift he has left us, an archive and website documenting 3,300+ mementos (and counting) of our history from 1876 through today...and going forward. Thanks to Jerry and to those who heeded his call to contribute items of interest (and to his wife, Rosemary for her tireless efforts to organize it), we can all honor Jerry every time we visit www.cbarchives.org for trips down CB’s memory lane. And with the aid of anyone in the community who has something of historical value to add to the CB archives for our enjoyment, I’m honored to help Jerry continue his labor of love for Christian Brothers.”
“Every time I walk by the Kirrene Family Archive room or see a historic display around campus, I am reminded of Jerry, his family, and the immense love they shared for Christian Brothers,” says Dr. LeRoy. “Their contributions are immeasurable, and they hold a special place in our hearts.”
