Sustainable Impact Written “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance…” (Proverbs 21:5) What does sustainability and good investment look like in God’s economy - which we know operates ‘upside down’ at times? Where is the balance between wisdom and faith when it comes to financial planning and budgets? When does justifiable, necessary expenditure cross the line and become poor stewardship, or worse? How do we achieve sustainable, healthy development (in the natural and in the spiritual) – in our team, in our projects and in the people we are called to serve and bless? These are the kind of questions I’ve been asking myself, and we’ve been asking each other, over the past 2 months of strategic planning and forecasting. When something is truly good, it needs to be nurtured. Think of an infant, a relationship, an idea, a church, a talent, or a calling. It won’t keep developing on its own. It is important to plan ahead and do all we can to ensure that, despite a changing landscape, that this ‘good thing’ 03

continues to adapt, grow, and flourish. This is the kind of sustainability we want for CBN South Africa. A tree exists because of the miracle of life. A tiny insignificant seed becomes a huge, beautiful living monument of wood, leaves and fruit because of the wonderful provision of water and nutrients. But its sustained growth and existence is essentially enabled by the environment around it - namely
CO2 and sunlight. A seed which sprouts in good soil with plenty of water simply will not last if it is confined to
a dark, stuffy place. It needs the sun and the air around it to stay alive, and to grow. As I think about the partnership we have with you as someone who is investing into the ministry of CBN SA it strikes me that, at the heart of it, you are being used by God to help create the enabling environment that sustains this important mission. The ‘CBN SA tree’ is planted by streams of living water, with deep roots into good soil. The environment around it will remain sunny and healthy through the generosity and obedience of partners like you, coupled with the integrity and
dedication of our team. And so, this tree will continue to grow, and its fruit will continue to nourish the people of Southern Africa. Thank you for sustaining this ‘good thing’ over these past few years. CBN South Africa may not be a giant tree yet, but it is certainly growing. We are strategically adapting to a rapidly changing landscape, while intentionally paying attention to the roots which ensure that God’s living water continues to flow. We thank the Lord for all the fruit so far, and we ask you to join us in trusting Him for far more in the near future.

Farewell to CBN SA Colleagues Written
The beginning of 2022 came with so much change. Not only did we embark on a new strategy journey across all of our ‘departments’, but we’ve also had to say goodbye to three of our treasured colleagues (who have all become our good friends). They have each done incredible work during their time at CBN, and have impacted us individually and organizationally on so many levels. While it is obviously so sad to say goodbye, we can already see the beauty and opportunity of where God is calling them next. Exactly one year after joining us, we are very sad to have to say goodbye to Clayten Gouws, our Operation Blessing Manager. He and his wife feel that the Lord is directing them to return to her home country (the USA), at least for a season. Clayten is honest, forthright, and devoted to do what is right. He carries the vital combination of humility and capability, as well as a deep care for others. He has been fully present with all of these things each day that he has worked in our team and lived 05

out his difficult, beautiful, busy role. He has served the people of our region in a way that has brought honour to CBN and to the Lord. While we really don’t want him to go, we know that he and his wife have prayed this out, grappled with it, turned it over to God, and are now certain that it is time to be pushing off shore on their next mission. It’s certainly a loss for us - but not for the Kingdom!

We also want to wish Alicia Swartz, our amazing Superbook Administrator, farewell and best wishes on her next adventure. God has called her and her husband, Ashwyn, on a new journey in ministry together as a couple. She has been so much more than a Superbook team
member - a trusted friend, a shopping partner, a shoulder to cry on, and a ready helper in all kinds of ways to all of us in the CBN SA team. Alicia is always serving and looking out for people – that’s why we call her ‘sunshine!’. She has been the Holy Spirit personified in so many beautiful ways. We will certainly miss her, but we’re so excited to see how God uses her and Ashwyn in this next exciting chapter.

Our final goodbye is to Thabile, Molapisane, our part-time Superbook Social Media Coordinator. We want to wish her a heartfelt farewell and best wishes on her next adventure. Her creative genius and heart to serve will be missed by everyone in the team. We loved how she brought colour and fun into everything that she did!

is a different direction your life is supposed to go and God is calling you for change/rest/ action and after fervent prayer, the calling is still there – there is NO other choice if we are who we say we are. We bend our knees, His light shines through and we step out in faith… come deep waters and high waves or green pastures and cool days, He is still with us.” This applies to all three of these special people. Despite the challenge and loss that comes with them leaving our very interdependent team, we’re so excited for the opportunities God has in store for them, and for us, as we trust the Lord to once again bring other excellent people into this great mission of ours.
Our Operation Blessing Manager in the USA wrote this in an email response to me when he first learned of Clayten’s leaving: “As a person, once you feel there 06
Operation Blessing Ministry Update The Warm Heart of Africa, also known as Malawi, is the focus of our update this issue. CBN SA has felt God opening this country up to us - through broadcasters, Superbook opportunities and in OB’s case, further reach into this beautiful country.
Cyclone Ana that caused massive flooding across central parts of the country. As a result, thousands of people were displaced, many of whom also lost their growing maize crops to the raging rivers that flooded their banks and surrounding farms.
The Cultivate Programme, based in Lilongwe, has continued to thrive and expand into more villages in the Dowa region. It gives the local subsistence farmers the skills and resources (farm inputs) to increase their crop growing capacity and thus also their family’s quality of life. The team is currently working in various communities where the participants have received and planted bean seeds.
OB was able to deliver much needed food, hygiene supplies and seeds for planting, to hundreds of people in three relief camps in the Chikwawa region. These relief camps provide shelter in churches, abandoned buildings and under trees. An amazing part of this trip was being able to partner with Jarvis and his wife, Catherine Msonda, who run Life Church and LifeChild (an Orphan’s Promise project) in Blantyre. Their help in facilitating and procuring the necessary relief aid was invaluable to the trip, and their love for these people in need and sharing the story of Hope with them was such a blessing to be a part of.

Superbook Updates We all love feel good stories. Here are some awesome testimonies that we believe speak into Superbook’s sustained impact and potential in children’s lives. We received the following stories from Leo Sekoere, who runs an Early Childhood Development Center in Johannesburg (South Africa). She introduced Superbook to her learners and has been amazed at the impact Superbook has had on them. She followed up with some of her past students as well and this is what she has to say. Phetheho’s story Last month Phetheho’s mom was driving past my home and she stopped by to tell me a testimony about how her son evangelized to the entire family and now they are all attending church because of him. I had no idea all of this was going on even since he had long graduated from our preschool. In 2018 when I first discovered Superbook, I was a bit saddened by the fact that many students don’t have access to DSTV

and can’t watch Superbook. Phetheho was the one who informed me that Superbook was being aired on SABC1 for free. God stepped in and allowed him to be part of what He was doing. Every Sunday he’d wake up early so he could watch Superbook. It was like church for him since his family didn’t allow him to go to church. Through this act of consistently surrounding himself with godly entertainment, he grew in wisdom, knowledge and understanding so much so that his mother started to feel a tugging in her heart to renew her relationship with Jesus. She asked us to recommend a church nearest to her house and we did. We visited the church the same year and there she was with her two sons. I don’t know at what point the father joined but we bumped into him last month too and he said “I’m
a man of God now, thanks to my son. Thank you for grooming him in the ways of God.” After this conversation, I remembered how much the son used to pray
for his father to stop drinking alcohol… His prayers had been answered.
Nosipho’s story Nosipho’s parents are not “church people” but they are starting to come to terms with the fact that their daughter loves Jesus and are prepared to do anything they can to allow her to express and enjoy her faith. Nosipho’s parents believe in African spirituality so she’s the first Christian in their immediate family. This is largely due to her exposure to Superbook. On many occasions, Nosipho had shared that her parents were concerned about her watching Superbook all the time. But
the fact that they bought her a Bible means that little by little, she’s winning them over. That to me was very special because Nosipho really has a heart for the things of God.

“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11) A couple of weeks ago I was thinking about how much my appreciation for the Bible has grown through my role at CBN. My job isn’t about promoting Superbook per se, but it is about promoting the Bible through Superbook. It’s about making the Word of God available to children 11
in a format they understand, and it is about creating opportunities that make it possible for the Word of God to have a direct impact on their generation. We have two end goals we would like to see achieved through Superbook in the Southern African region. One involves seeing children’s faith formation and character being strengthened through the Bible. The other involves having children join the mission of preparing the world for the coming King, Jesus Christ.
In the South African context, the number of children involved in violent crimes is on an increase. According to the annual crime statistics released in 2020, a staggering 779 of the 21 325 murders recorded by police in South Africa between April 2019 and March 2020, were committed by children - some as young as 10.* It is because of this that we are passionate about child protection campaigns. We are also privileged to be working through programmes like Safer Schools, an initiative by the Western Cape Government, to make schools a safe space for children. We are currently working on introducing Superbook as an after-school programme in local primary schools.

From Sadness to Joy, Hopelessness to Purpose Submitted

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never permit the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22) passion to take care of sick people began. She says she wants to be there for sick people who can’t help themselves. Her passion further cemented when her partner died alone while she was visiting her family in the Eastern Cape.
We first met Nomalungisa when we invited her 4-year-old son, Asiphile, to join the Life Child Preschool at the start of 2021. She was very emotional and still grieving the loss of her partner and father of her two younger children, who had died from epilepsy 2 years before. She is a 39-year-old mother of three. Her 21-year-old daughter lives in Johannesburg, while her 6-yearold daughter and 4-year-old son are still with her. While working as a cleaner in a hospital, her 13
Her family live in a 2-bedroom shack house and Nomalungisa shares a bed with her children. Before our Keeping Families Together (KFT) programme, she was surviving on R800 from a social grant and R500 from renting a second bedroom. When she joined the KFT programme, it was clear to her facilitator that the first thing needed was grief counselling to help her deal with her grief. After a few sessions with Gcobisa (her counsellor), she had moved through the stages of grief and got to a place of accepting her loss. Thereafter, Nomalungisa was quick to open her home to host the weekly cell group and was able to share with the ladies
there how the counselling she received had helped her. She has also started improving her lifestyle through exercise and reading motivational books to help learn tools to achieve the life she desires. To improve her living conditions and become more financially stable she took the opportunity KFT offered her to start a small business. This included the provision of eggs as a ‘start-up’. She was grateful for the initial provision of eggs and is giving it all she has and is excited about the possibilities. “I love this business and will do my best and I’m grateful for everything God has done for me”, she said. As a steppingstone to nursing, in November 2021 she enrolled in a Home-Based Care programme through KFT. She is so excited and feels she is on the journey to achieve her dream career in nursing and believes God heard her prayers. “I am committed and will never take this opportunity for granted,” she said. She has just started her ‘practical’ (dressed in her new uniform - as picture on the left) at an old age home and says “this is where I belong. I see my dream of helping sick and old people come to fulfilment. I am so happy finding my purpose in life. I see these elderly people
like my family, and it makes me happy when I can make someone smile”. Nomalungisa is a loving mother to her two children and enjoys having fun with them. Little Asihile is doing well at the Life Child Preschool. She says he is a curious child and asks her lots of questions and loves playing and watching cartoons. His performance at school has improved dramatically since starting with Life Child. With the apple not falling far from the tree, he also shows care for his classmates and is always ready to assist them. He is a beautiful, happy little boy with loads of potential. God turned Nomalungisa’s life around because she let go of what was hurting her and embraced her future.

God Cares About Sustainability Written “So, God created humankind in His image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:27-28) People were given the task of stewarding the earth’s resources by God. A consequence we see in Genesis of being created in God’s image is that we are to “have dominion over...the earth” (Gen. 1:26). We exert dominion over the created universe knowing that we are reflecting God. We are not the originals, but the images, and it is our responsibility to

follow the original—God— rather than ourselves. As a result, God’s use of the words ‘subdue’ and ‘dominion’ in Genesis 1 does not authorise us to trample all over His creation. Quite the opposite, in fact. We are to act as if we, too, have the same loving relationship with creation as God. Subduing the earth entails both harnessing and protecting its diverse resources. Dominion over all living creatures is a contract from God to care for them, not a license to mistreat them. Today, we are acutely aware of how the pursuit of human self-interest endangers the natural world. The Garden was supposed to be tended to and cared for by us (Gen 2:15). Creation was made for our benefit, but not solely for our benefit. We are intended

to nurture and conserve the environment by remembering that the air, water, soil, plants, and animals are all good (Gen 1:4-31). Our actions have the potential to either protect or degrade the clean air, water, land, biodiversity, ecosystems, and biomes, and even the climate that God has blessed His world with. Dominion refers to the ability to work for God’s creation rather than against it. In the book of Numbers, we see a great illustration of God’s explicit instructions regarding stewardship. The Levite tribe is instructed in Numbers 35 to establish communities throughout the Promised Land. The amount of pastureland that each town should have was detailed in Numbers 35:2–5. The grazing area was to spread forth a thousand cubits (approximately 1500 feet) in each direction, starting at the outside of town. “You shall measure, outside the town, for the east side two thousand cubits, for the south

side two thousand cubits, for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, with the town in the middle” (Num. 35:5). This layout was a very realistic exercise in town planning. God took the time to teach Moses about civic planning based on semi-geometrical pastureland growth. Numbers 35 exemplifies God’s meticulous attention to facilitating work that supports people and generates economic prosperity. This implies that to handle the earth’s resources efficiently and sustainably, excellence and knowledge are necessary today. As you step out into today’s “fields”, are you stewarding what God has given you with excellence, with wisdom, and with the understanding that God has given this to you to grow and make sustainable for HIS Kingdom? Are you relying on the help of the Gift Giver or are you merely hoping for the best? 16
3 Things to Remember if You Want to Have Impact Sustainably Written

The work we do on earth is meant to glorify God, and a desire can be for our work to have a lasting impact on people and throughout time. Here are three considerations to keep in mind when planning out ways to have a sustainable impact on the world:
walk with God, all things are possible (Matt 19:26). Yes, faith is required, but real lasting impact is completely possible with God, because He promises that, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Phil 4:13).
Walk it out with God
I was thinking about the idea of lasting impact, and I thought about the early church in Acts and how they sustained themselves. How did they carry on with their mission for so long? They had a community of people around them. They had networks of churches, elders, brothers and sisters that they met up with in different places. They walked in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit (Acts 9:31). They also weren’t doing the mission of spreading the Gospel alone – it was like a big Godfamily affair. Finally, the Bible says that when they gathered, they exhorted, encouraged and strengthened one another (Acts 11:23).
How do we continue advancing the Kingdom and not grow weary? The first Scripture that comes to mind is Matthew 11:2830. If we want to avoid becoming weary, we are encouraged to go before Jesus and take His yoke upon ourselves and follow His purposes for our lives. To continue advancing the Kingdom, we must be walking in the will of the Father - with the Father. When we walk in His purpose for our lives, when we walk with Him, and when we walk with Kingdom determination, opportunity opens for God to sustain us because we are doing things in alignment with His will and power. When we obey and 17

“Strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God,” (Acts 14:22). The disciples experienced many hardships on their mission, and Jesus reminds us, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world,” (John 16:33). Putting up our hand to walk with God and bring His Kingdom to earth is not going to be easy, but we should always keep our focus on Him (Phil 3:14) and remember we are never alone. Do it in love Why do we stumble? Why do we burn out? One reason could be because we lose sight of our first love.
“And you have persevered and have patience and have laboured for My name’s sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless
I have this against you, that you have left your first love,” (Rev 2:3-4). In wanting to have a sustained impact on the work we do on earth we must walk in obedience to God’s calling, we must walk in fellowship with others, and, probably most importantly, we must do it with zealous love for the Triune God. Paul reminds us, “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing,” (1 Cor 13:2). If we want to create and do things that have a sustained impact, we must first have a heart position that is completely in love with Jesus – and then from there we move.

Empowering Through Understanding Written With this being my last article for Arise as the Operation Blessing Manager for Southern Africa, the idea of impact and sustainability has been on my mind quite a bit lately as I look at how to best pass on this role and position to my successor. As I ponder more on the idea of sustained impact, two ideas come to my mind. The first being - what is the impact we are trying to make and is it the right impact? We recently did a trip to Blantyre, Malawi where thousands of families have been displaced from their homes due to Cyclone Ana (read the update on page 05). As we were making plans to bring aid to them, our local partner on the ground visited with the affected communities to hear from them what their needs were. As much as we wanted to bring as much food as our funding would let us, the real felt need on the ground was so much more than just food. Plastic sheets to waterproof their thatched roofs, soap to wash themselves, blankets so they didn’t have to sleep on the dirt anymore, and books and pens so that the children could continue with school, even in the middle of the chaos. 19

Understanding the real need is the best way to create real impact! The second idea is that sustainability is deeply entrenched in empowerment. A bag of maize meal to a family will be empty at some point, it won’t last forever. But giving someone the opportunity and knowledge to plant and grow their own maize not only provides food long term, but it also provides hope and gives the power back to change their circumstances. A question I often ask myself when assessing one of our OB projects, “What would happen if I/we left this project?” Would it be able to continue without us? I sometimes think Jesus probably had a similar thought as He planned to leave earth to return to heaven. Thankfully He left us the Holy Spirit that is always with us – guiding, leading, and empowering us! I wonder, when we think of the spheres around us, what will we be leaving behind us? Are we engaging the real needs? Are we empowering those around us? What is the legacy you are leaving?

How do you answer someone who says he’s a Christian but does not believe in the Trinity?
I would open the Bible and begin at Matthew 3:17 (NKJV), and take that person back to the baptism of Jesus. Jesus is there in the water, and the Holy Spirit descends on Him through a dove that sits on His shoulder. The verse explains, “And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”” There, you’ve got the Father, and you’ve got the Son, and of course, the Holy Spirit. You have that throughout the Bible: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. You cannot read the Bible without understanding that there is a Trinity and not three separate gods. We believe in one God, externally existent in three beings: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
