Justification

Written “How can a man be made right with God?” (Job 25:4) A question for the ages I guess, hardwired inside every one of us. Accompanied by a deep, instinctive longing to be fully reconciled with our Creator. The answer in a word – and a theme we’re exploring in this issue as we journey together these next two months – justification, by faith in Jesus. What is justification exactly? Biblically, it is a legal declaration from God that we are innocent of sin. Instead of being punished, we are declared right before Him. It is not mere pardon justification still respects the law. It is an act by which God determines to treat the guilty as righteous, just as if they had not sinned. The basis for this? The finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ at the cross. He takes our place as Accused #1 and is put to death in our place. He who knew no sin becomes sin for us, broken for our brokenness. The thief on the cross next to Jesus, justified with just a few words of faith, is a powerful reminder that restoring the relationship between us and God is by Grace 03

alone through faith, not by any good behaviour on our part! Through faith, God counts us as righteous, justifying us because of Christ. No wonder Martin Luther said that justification is the cornerstone of Christianity! No wonder it sets our faith apart from all other world religions! And no wonder our false sense of justice and piety makes it so difficult to accept. Researching and writing this introduction has made me realise how absolutely central the doctrine of justification is to our faith. It really is at the heart of all that we are called to believe, live by and proclaim as Christians. The history-splitting sacrifice of Jesus, or ‘atonement’, justifies a fallen world before a Holy God, so that humans can once again walk and talk in relationship with Him, full of hope and wonderfully free! But have you fully embraced this scandalous doctrine of justification? His Word teaches us that it is a gift which we must keep grabbing on to in order

to live the abundant, eternal and freedom-proclaiming life we are all made for. And it is a gift we need to let the ‘sinners’ alongside us know about – so they too can live free and fully justified before their Creator.

Welcome, Clayten! If you read the last issue of Arise, we announced that Nic Barker - our previous Operation Blessing Manager - would be leaving our team to follow where God was calling him.

of this colourful country, I now call Cape Town my home! I have a passion for the outdoors, especially the mountains and I enjoy capturing my passion through photography.

Since then, we’re happy to inform you that we’ve hired Clayten Gouws to take his place as Operation Blessing Program Manager!

Over the last five years I have been working with and in local NGOs and organisations around Cape Town; in the areas of social development, disaster relief and anti-human trafficking.

Here is a quick word from Clayten:

“I’m really excited to be taking on this huge role for Southern Africa. The Lord has really led me into this position for a reason and I’m full of faith for how God has planned to use me as part of this amazing team at CBN SA. I’m a South African “local”, having lived in five provinces

05

I am so excited to expand my experience into the larger field of Southern Africa and I’m thankful for each and every one of you that empowers us to make God’s love known!” Keep an eye out on social media (@cbnsouthafrica) and in future issues of Arise to see what CBN’s Operation Blessing is doing in our region!

An Update From Production

There is a lot to be excited about when it comes to production at CBN SA. In just over a year, we have gone from 0 to 3 weekly short-format shows. Namely: Take 3 - bite sized news from a Christian perspective; Devotions - a peek into our weekly team devotions; and Hard Truths - tackling hard questions believers and unbelievers have about Christianity. God is using CBN SA mightily in our online productions. Please pray for us as more opportunities are coming our way, that we will be able to sift through the distractions and find what God is calling us to in the production space. For our region, God is opening up doors for productions from around our region to reach

those we physically cannot from SA. Please join us in praying that these productions/stories will be done with the right heart, and that ultimately, God is glorified. - Jarryd Doyle To take a look at our different short-format shows, head on over to our Facebook page (@cbnsouthafrica) and view our videos. You’ll find them all there. For Hard Truths, go to our Instagram page. You can help us greatly by sharing these videos on Facebook or WhatsApp and telling your friends about them. Another way to help, is to follow the call of Take 3 each Thursday and spend 3 minutes praying for our nation. 06

He is Risen - A Superbook Experience!

We had loads of fun discovering the true meaning of Christmas in December with The First Christmas Experience. To continue the adventure, we invited families from all over South Africa to join us online once again, to celebrate the victory won for us on the cross. It’s important to us that children truly understand the reason why Easter is so important in the lives of Christians. Families were encouraged to download the step-by-step Adventure Guide and to create their own Superbook experience at home,

in preparation for the online viewing.

In anticipation, we prepared a total of 32 Superbook packs for individuals to help us spread the word online. The pack consisted of branded Superbook items with a suggested social media calendar that individuals could use in helping them spread the word of the online event – and as a result, the Gospel. We were so encouraged by all of the people who supported us on this! Here are some of the photos:

“To be honest, it feels like I’ve been a Superbook fan since forever. We were amazed at the Biblical accuracy, it is still one of the main reasons we continue to watch it to this day. The visual experience, the stories, and the testimonies that have come from Superbook have transformed so many lives (from what I have seen online) including mine. I tell everyone (kids and adults alike) to do themselves a favour and watch it. The transforming power of the Gospel through Superbook has made me want to share it even more.” - Gaynor Ingham 07

Small but Important

Although large-scale, high profile fires like the recent one on Table Mountain around UCT are devastating, those affected by them tend to attract an amazing collective response from individuals, corporates and local government. Unfortunately this is not usually the case with the smaller scale shack fires which affect the Cape Town informal settlements in particular. And yet, for those who lose their homes, possessions and often much more in these fires, their need for support is often even more urgent. The week before Easter, one such fire raged through a part of the Red Hill community in the South Peninsula of Cape Town. We were alerted to it by Tallent, a resident of Red Hill and our amazing coworker who has been with CBN SA since even before I (Ian) started here.

Despite the fact that we did not yet then have our new Operation Blessing Manager with us, our team was thankfully able to offer some basic help to the six families whose homes were completely destroyed in the blaze. Alicia went out and bought bags of food and essentials from Shoprite, as well as big bags of maize for each family. In addition, through our amazing partnership with City Hope Disaster Relief, we were also able to give each family a large box of brand new, sponsored clothing items. We were able to give the children in each household a box of mallow eggs to share for Easter too, just to lift their spirits. And we prayed for the affected men and women, some of whom were feeling so helpless and hopeless. These families were so grateful to the CBN team for doing something – especially in a situation like this where the disaster is often seen as ‘too small’ for the City of Cape Town and other NPOs to get involved. Of course, I drove away from Red Hill that day feeling very grateful too – for so many things, including the privilege of getting to use your generous donations to do things that really matter. 08

A Hope and a Future! Written When Peter (name changed) was orphaned as a baby 13 years ago, he was taken to children’s care centre at Beautiful Gate South Africa. He was very small and needed constant love and care just to survive. Then, as a young child, he came to live at one of our OP supported partners, the Beautiful Dream Society Children’s homes, in Lesotho where he became the son of a loving mother, and brother to loving siblings. Peter has now grown into a teen and is starting to thrive. With the support of his Beautiful Dream Society (BDS) family and Victory Church Maseru, he is part of

his community and no longer a victim of his situation. Peter is determined to become his own man. Naturally, he was curious about his roots and the BDS staff started to help him locate his family. They found the place of Peter’s biological family and discovered that there was property that he may have the right to inherit. The BDS Staff began to assess and research the situation with the plan to establish Peter’s legal right to any property that may have belonged to his parents. It was discovered that there were relatives with property that were related to him.

Recently, the BDS social worker took Peter on a road trip to his hometown to meet with the chief of the area. They arrived at the chief’s doorstep and the chief was so happy to see Peter after such a long time - all grown up! The chief had been involved in Peter’s case when he was orphaned as a baby, so he knew Peter’s situation very well. He did not have any problem authenticating that the ancestral property belongs to Peter’s family. After receiving the authentication letter written by the chief, the chief asked two of his men to lead Peter and the BDS social worker to find the property, and this is what they found: Peter’s parents owned a tworoom house with electricity and tap water in the middle of a large piece of land. Peter met the younger sister of his mother, who had been a child herself when Peter was orphaned. Currently, the property is being used by Peter’s aunt who lives there with her children. As Peter continues to grow and learn in the Beautiful Dream Society Children’s Home, and go on to college or trade school

after his secondary education, he has now established some roots in a hometown that he didn’t know existed with relatives that he had not yet met with property that he is to inherit! Another piece of the puzzle in Peter’s life has been revealed and we join with Peter in claiming this promise from God’s word:

“But then I will come and do for you all the good things I have promised, and I will bring you home again. For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I will be found by you,” says the LORD. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and will bring you home again to your own land.” (Jeremiah 29:104) While Peter will always be part of the BDS family, even after he has grown up and left their care at the appropriate time, Peter has had a dream fulfilled - he has found his roots. God is faithful! We rejoice with Peter!

Last year on Good Friday, I was awakened with the thought that I should look up Hebrews 9:6. So I opened my Bible and read “Now when these things have been thus prepared, the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services.” I wondered what it meant - and then I saw the relationship to Good Friday. On the very day that the Son of God was offering Himself as the sacrifice for all people for all time, the priests were still prforming their service in the Temple. They didn’t realise that there was a complete change of Temple service and the abolition of sacrifice. It’s 11

almost like they didn’t get the memo. And for about 37 more years, those priests continued to perform their rituals. This was after all the tremendous miracles that happened on Good Friday. The veil in the Temple was torn in two from the top to bottom. There was a great earthquake, graves opened, and people were raised from the dead. Then, on the third day, Jesus Himself arose from the grave and appeared to people numerous times. Even so, the priests kept up their routines, not realising everything had changed - until

Titus surrounded Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple in A.D. 70, and the daily sacrifices ceased. Today, as we see the immense changes in our nation and the world, we need to understand the seriousness of the times. Let’s not be like the Temple priests, performing our routines without recognising what is truly happening. Yes, our world is changing, yet God still calls us to preach the Gospel and reach out to the suffering. The key is to depend on Him, and He will give us insights, ideas and ability to meet new challenges. It’s interesting to consider that the whole Temple service was to eliminate the sins that were done unwittingly. Yet what justifies people before God is that the righteous live by faith, and this is declared under both the old and new covenants (Habakkuk 2:4 and Romans 1:17). And righteousness by faith is what gets us through. As Hebrews 11:1 tells us: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” How do we get this faith? Hebrews 12:2 states it simply: “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for

the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” So let Jesus be your faith. Don’t try to drum it up or pray it down. Just look to Him - because if you have Jesus, you have all the faith that you need. He is the author and the finisher. God’s Word assures us in 2 Timothy 2:13 that even when we are faithless, He remains faithful, because He cannot deny Himself. In the middle of any turbulence, we have Jesus. That means we have all we need, and we have the wonderful promise in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Don’t let your circumstances distract you. When you look at the wind and waves, you start to sink. But when you start looking at Jesus, you start to arise and you can walk on water. Remember, we have this wonderful new covenant made with the blood of Jesus Christ. When we hold onto Him, we can go through every difficulty knowing that He is with us and His righteous right hand will uphold us. God bless you. 12

Justified by, and for, Christ Written

by

Robyn Hat tingh

When I set out the themes at the beginning of 2021, knowing what lay ahead, I kept telling myself “it’s in the future, don’t worry” when I saw words like ‘justification’ awaiting me. Now that it’s here, I’m a bit taken aback.

justification is God’s righteous act of removing the condemnation, guilt and penalty of sin, by grace, while, at the same time, declaring the ungodly to be righteous, through faith in Christ’s atoning sacrifice.

Why, you may ask? I regularly need to Google the definition of justification to remind myself exactly what it means. It’s a big word with a complex definition. Or at least it feels complex to me.

Read that again, I know I do.

To simplify it for myself, I started thinking about how we use the word today. Typically, we use the verb form of it - ’justify’. We justify our actions, emotions and responses. I know I justify many things in my own mind - I can totally buy this plant, I deserve it; what’s another 10-minute snooze; I’ll have quiet time tomorrow. Some of them are valid, some of them are just to make myself feel better. More often than not, it’s to make myself feel better about my own decisions, actions or feelings. What is godly justification? The definition of it is this: 13

Justification would not be possible without the cross. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is the only reason it exists. The cross is “God’s righteous act”. He removed “the condemnation, guilt and penalty of sin” by carrying it on the cross with Him. He died to remove that on our behalf. And nothing we can ever do, or have done, made that happen. It’s all “by grace”. Therefore, each one of us as sinners, has been declared righteous through our faith in God - by believing Jesus died on the cross and is our Saviour. What does that mean for you and I? Considering we just came through the Easter season… I think the reason for the cross, and the importance of it in our lives, is still very fresh in our minds.

We know Jesus died on the cross for our sins, so that we can live in freedom from sin and death, and in relationship with God. Take a moment to think about the act of justification. When I justify my actions, I do it to make myself feel better (generally). Or to validate a decision I have made. What Jesus did was justify all of our sin, so that we don’t have to. So that we can live in freedom with Him. But we shouldn’t leave it at that. We shouldn’t use the cross to justify our actions, our decisions, that don’t align with God. The reality, and gift, of the cross, should transform us. It should make us want to a live a life glorifying to God because of what He did for us on the cross.

We’re no longer slaves to sin, fear or death. WE ARE FREE! And the way we live should reflect that. We should reflect Jesus. We should proudly bear the identity of the One who created us, set us free and wants a relationship with us. It’s not easy. But neither was the act of justification that Jesus sacrificially, and lovingly, took on our behalf. Words like justification may seem overwhelming, but the truth of it is simple – Jesus died to free us, so we must live like we’ve been set free by Christ.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;” (Romans 3:2324)

What would your verdict be? Written Imagine you are standing in a courtroom in front of a judge. You are not the court reporter or a member of the audience. You are the defendant in a capital murder case. The crowd comes to a hush as the judge begins to hand out the verdict. He unveils a piece of paper and announces, “On the count of first-degree murder, we find the defendant guilty as charged.” The crowd murmurs as you are led away to prison, having been found guilty of your crime. Your sentence? Death. Hopefully, you will never find yourself in a situation like this. However, if we substitute a heavenly scene for this one, we all find ourselves in this terrible predicament. You may not have murdered anyone, but we have all committed evil against God, the Bible calls this SIN. What is sin? It’s the condition that all of us live in in this fallen world. The fruit of sin makes us choose to go our own way rather than obey God. The out-working of sin is a list of behaviours that 15

by

M e a g a n Tay l o r

come from our heart that lead us to do, think or say things that are not in accordance with God’s character. Where did sin creep into our hearts and corrupt our character? It all started with God’s creation of Adam and Eve who initially lived in perfect harmony with God. Until they were tempted by Satan to eat from the tree of knowledge of Good and Evil - which was forbidden by God. They chose to disobey by eating the fruit of the tree. The consequence of choosing not to follow God was that sin entered into the human experience, and death came as the inevitable consequence of living outside of God’s design and will. All of humanity has sinned, except for Jesus. If we were put on trial before God, the ultimate Judge, we would all be found guilty and ultimately receive the punishment of death in an eternal place called Hell, where we would be completely separated from God. We are

all guilty of the same core sin rejecting God. But here’s the good news! The Bible also speaks of righteousness, this is being in right standing with God – without sin. We can’t access righteousness if we live separate from God. We have to be JUSTIFIED by God to obtain this righteousness. God has given us the free gift of justification. Isn’t that amazing! To conclude, let’s celebrate the good news! Justification is a legal declaration from God that you are innocent of all your sin. This idea of being made free of sin and standing blamelessly before God is comforting and

hopeful. The good news is that it’s not about working off your debt to God, but simply by believing in Jesus Christ as your Saviour. If you trust in Him, you will receive His righteousness. Jesus will cover your sin through His act on the cross. All your impurity will be made perfect through Christ because He lived a sinless, blameless life. Friends of CBN SA, I thank God for this gift and I pray that you would continue to walk in this freedom. The Bible describes this as though God clothes us with His own perfection, hiding our imperfection so that we can live in harmony with Him once more. 16

Faith - A Key Component to Being Justified Writ ten “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1, emphasis own.) Does professing my faith in Jesus really make me justified and righteous before God? Should I lose faith or decide I no longer believe, am I still justified? It is in asking myself these questions that I conclude that being justified by faith may perhaps not be a once off event, but a continual one. Before I begin, I must admit, this has probably been one of the most difficult pieces to write. I feel too inadequate to offer any sort of opinion on this topic. My reason eis that I got saved in a very charismatic, “Jesus loves you no matter what” church. Grace was our claim and anything else would be legalism. My experience meant I did not learn what the appropriate response should be to God’s overwhelming generosity. It also led me to taking the promises of God out of context and 17

by

Yo l a n d a M a g i d a

conveniently forgetting their conditions. So, my Christian theology has been sketchy, to say the least. But thank God that we get the opportunity to grow and be corrected. So, please bear with me in my ramblings. This is where I have finally landed after all of my thinking. Our faith plays a huge role in our justification process. I say process because I am not sure we fully understand the gift of justification by God in one go. Participation is required. Faith is the participation requirement. It is this condition and requirement that I would like to focus on. Justification, according to Wikipedia, is God’s righteous act of removing the condemnation, guilt, and penalty of sin, by grace, while, at the same time, declaring the ungodly to be righteous, through faith in Christ’s atoning sacrifice. Paul, in Romans 5, makes it clear that you can only be justified through faith. Faith, not works or performance, justifies you. Now my understanding of faith is that it is an active rather than a passive endeavour. It is something that one must

continually activate. It is in faith that we must grab hold of these truths: • Sin is in us as humans, and it has a devastating effect (death). • God’s righteousness and justice fully demands penalty for our sin. • Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross saved us from that penalty. Saved by grace alone. • Understanding that Jesus‘ righteousness is now ours, if we accept him as our Lord and Saviour. Another thing I have noticed is that our faith is tested. If our faith were never contested or tested, I would say it is enough to view justification as a once-off process where we profess our faith. However, it is the action that we take daily that validates our faith. Abraham, in the Bible, is a perfect example of this. He was considered righteous because he demonstrated his faith when God told him to sacrifice Isaac.

what validates it. As Christians, we are expected to believe in the Gospel and maintain our faith to be considered justified. It is the maintenance of faith and your belief in God that allows you to receive justification as the gift that it truly is. I also believe that it is this very faith that will determine how you receive salvation and how you work it out with trembling (Philippians 2:12). It is this very same faith that will determine the degree in which you participate in the sanctification process by obeying the Holy Spirit. In conclusion, faith plays a big role in us being justified.

“What does the scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” (Romans 4:3)

Jesus is another example. He was sent to the wilderness right after He was baptised and affirmed as the Son of God. This leads me to believe that faith can only be authenticated once tested. Actions or works seem to be 18

Q A

Q&A with Pat Robertson When Jesus gave sight to the blind people, why did He say to them, “Don’t tell anybody”? The people looked at it from an earthly perspective. They wanted to make Him king. They wanted to lift Him up in hopes of Him being an earthly ruler. Jesus was trying to keep them from doing that. He didn’t want people pointing to Him and then trying to loudly promote Him as king or to make Him some special thing on earth beyond what He wanted to be. Why? Because He knew, sooner or later, that He was going to have to face the cross - and the cross is what was needed to liberate us from sin. That’s why He didn’t want the word going around causing people to take Him by force and make Him king. Jesus knew His purpose: He came into the world to live a sinless life, and die as the payment for sin for all who believe and accept Him as Saviour.
