Written One morning, a few years back, I was dropping Liya, my then 4-year-old daughter, at her preschool. The headmistress gently ‘scolded’ me by telling my daughter to ‘remind her father to give her a jacket on such a cold day’. I humbly nodded to show that her parenting coaching had been well received. Liya spoke up: “I actually have two fathers! My daddy here who forgot my jacket… and my father in heaven”. As I hugged her goodbye and drove away that day, I felt such a sense of gratitude - and freedom - that my little girl already got it. She already lived in the life-changing

truth that she has two dads - an imperfect, temporary human one and a perfect, everlasting One. “Our Father” – this is the familiar but crucial opening phrase of the prayer Jesus taught us to pray, and the words Jesus usually addressed God with Himself (except when He was temporarily separated by our sin on the cross). I think these words begin this model prayer because they help to put us into alignment with the Truth. Uttering them reminds us we are God’s children - and tells the world that we are not just religious nuts who believe in some distant deity. Without “Our Father”, He remains a fearful God out there who we must either placate, run from or ignore. Our prayers to Him can become fear-filled, superstitious, cold and begging. Without “Our Father”, we cannot live in the fullness and freedom reserved for sons and daughters of The Living God. No matter how long we’ve been Christians, God can’t fully be Father to us until we fully grab on to what it is to be His sons

03

and daughters - children that are intimate and trusting and obedient and bursting with honouring affection for their Daddy. You see, I don’t think God’s forgiveness is meant to be the goal of our faith. It is just the crucial entry point for us into a powerfully restored relationship with Him. As it was in the Beginning. But we need to believe in, have faith in and live in the reality of that relationship! He died so that we can be co-heirs, and learn to live in sonship. And the beautiful verse below reminds us how – it is by His Spirit that we are able

to cry ‘Abba! Father’. Daddy. “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry ‘Abba! Father!’” Romans 8:15 Liya is now 9. I can hear her singing joyfully outside as I write this. She and my twin boys continue to teach me every day what it is to be a dad - as my Father continues to teach me, by His Spirit, what it is to be a son.

The Father’s Blessing Written

by

Gordon Robertson

The answer to every spiritual problem is to look at the Lord face to face. The Bible records that God told the priests how to bless the people. He says in Numbers 6:23-26: “Say to them: The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you; And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you; And give you peace.” This impartation comes from being face to face with God. He is always looking at you, so if you want to be face to face with God, all you have to do is turn and look to Him. And there is the Lord, lifting up His countenance upon you and giving you shalom - His peace. Then in the next verse, God says: “So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them”. God blesses us with His name! He is our saviour, our redeemer, our healer, our 05

provider, our all-in-all, the Almighty, the all-sufficient One. When we look to Him, His names are put on us. For us as believers in Jesus, “All the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us” (2 Corinthians 1:20). As a benefit of salvation, God gives us His blessing and changes our name. We call ourselves Christians, and Christ means annointing - so we have taken the name of annointing on us. I encourage fathers to do what the Orthodox Jewish community does every Shabbat. They gather their children, lay hands on them, pray over them, and bless them. The answer to every spiritual problem is to look at the Lord face to face. Realise that we are His children and the sheep of His pasture - and He will guide us, direct us, and give us everything we need for this life. May God bless you!

On the ground in Mozambique

Due to the recent surge in violent attacks on villages along the northern coastal region of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique, tens of thousands of people are now internally displaced people (IDP’s). Many have been making trips of 400km or more to find safety around the more southern cities such as Montepuez where over 700,000 IDP’s now find themselves. As a means of offering relief to our neighbours in our Southern African region, I was able to be on the ground in Montepuez in Mozambique as our regional OB Manager, to deliver food and basic supplies to some of the IDP’s. Thanks to our generous partners and CityHope Disaster Relief, we were also able to provide basic hygiene essentials

and plastic sheeting for shelter to help these families get back on their feet. Thank you for your ongoing support and prayers. We truly appreciate each and every one of you. We are so grateful that we get to see Kingdom culture in action in such practical ways! Keep an eye on our social media pages for video updates from our trip. - Clayten Gouws, OB Manager.

An Update From Production

The past few weeks have been a time spent serving the multiple departments of CBN SA. At the end of June, we were able to travel for the first time since the pandemic hit. Superbook Mzansi and Orphan’s Promise, alongside production, travelled to rural parts of KwaZuluNatal to meet with partner organisations, host Superbook screenings, and visit ongoing projects. I am so thankful that I was there as our production team to capture it all. 07

We have also started production on two testimonies for Turning Point International (TPi) that should be completed mid-July of 2021. Please join us as we prayerfully consider future productions and projects for our production team at CBN SA. There are so many ideas and opportunities, but we want to steward our time and resources well! Jarryd Doyle Production Manager

Superbook Updates

Child Protection Week was an incredibly special week for our team. We consider ourselves blessed to be working alongside organisations like the Westlake United Church in creating awareness and promoting children’s rights. As a team, we chose to get involved with Child Protection Week because we are appalled by the recent increase in children being involved with violent CBNSA’s online Superbook Christmas Experience wins an award! In May the Association of Christian Media awarded CBNSA the Focus on the Family annual trophy (along with R3000 cash prize) for “producing effective content that promotes the strengthening of the family or family values within the last year”. They recognised our Superbook First Christmas Experience (an online event that we put together in December 2020) as creatively emphasising biblically sound principles towards nurturing and

crimes. Children between the ages of 10 to 17 years of age are becoming perpetrators of crime. A staggering 779 of the 21 325 murders recorded by police in South Africa between April 2019 and March 2020, were committed by children*. We believe Superbook is positioned as one of many possible solutions to this issue. A strong moral foundation in children is critical as it influences how they think, what they value and how they act. One of the many potential benefits of fostering spiritual formation in children is that it fosters a deep appreciation for the sacredness of life - which is currently missing. *IOL: Children responsible for 779 murders in 2019/20: 01 August 2020.

protecting families in Africa - to help families thrive. Something we are extremely passionate about. We are so grateful for this acknowledgement from our peers in media. We want to thank you, our partners for your participation and prayers into projects like Superbook Experience. With your continued support we believe that we will be making significant impact into thousands of children and their homes - raising healthy, morally-driven leaders for our nation’s future. 08

A Father with a Vision Submitted

Our Orphan’s Promise ‘Keeping Families Together’ (KFT) project in Malawi continues to be a strong tool for empowering families to be self-sustainable. This is also a wonderful tool to avoid families sending their children away to other family members or friends due to lack of resources to care and look after them. Some of our KFT families are supported with small loans or grants to help them develop a skill that will help them to start their own business. Others are helped with startup capital and training on how to run a business and succeed. 09

by

Leonie Nortje

Mr Kadam’manja’s family is one of the beneficiary families in Malawi who joined the KFT programme. There are 5 children in the house and the father of the house is the sole bread winner for the family. He used to work as a welder but was retrenched when the company was affected due to Covid. Another unexpected event for the family was the birth of another child, 13 years after their youngest. The family planning method which they used did not work and they now have a new baby in the family. Even though it is wonderful to have new

life, it also brings with it a huge financial impact on a family who was already struggling. But there is hope! Mr Kadam’manja has some basic skills in tailoring and wanted to use that to earn money to care for his family. OP stepped in to help his family by assisting him with starting his own business. Through this provision he’ll be able to support his family. The family will also receive counselling, training in life skills and parenting, financial planning, and spiritual input to assist them during the next 18 months of their exciting journey. When he was chosen to be part of the programme through the local church, he was so thankful. These were his words in the project opening session, “I come

here to pray and hear God’s words, I did not know that God will meet me in such a way. I am so thankful for His grace to be part of this project”. And in a similar way that Mr Kadam’manja has a heart for his family and works hard to support them to the best of his ability, our Father God also has a heart for families. As this father loves and cares for his family, God loves and cares for each of His children and their needs and will supply according to His riches in glory. That is the heart of a father. We are excited with the Kadam’manja family about their new future and new hope!

Intimacy with Our Father Written

Thanks to you and so many of our other Operation Blessing partners, I was honoured to have visited Mozambique recently. We provided food and aid relief to about 2 000 of the more than 700,000 internally displaced people that have fled the violence in the northern regions, travelling 400km+ on foot to reach safety. Almost 70% of these people were women and children, many of whom had lost husbands, fathers, and brothers in brutal attacks on rural villages in the Cabo Delgado region of northern Mozambique. (You can read more about this in our update on page 6.) Meeting these people that had seen and experienced 11

things that my mind could not even comprehend, hit my heart deeply and I was struck to my core by the despair and sheer hopelessness that so many of these innocent people carried on their faces. It was almost like a white flag being waved in surrender; with nothing left to hold onto, at the end of their tether. Yet the truth is... there is still hope for them! In this region of Mozambique, around 90% of the people are Muslim and don’t believe in Jesus Christ as their Saviour and God as their Father. Yet, in the midst of all the chaos of them fleeing, in the midst of their fear and pain, the Father sees them, He knows them, and He sends them help.

Before many of them can recognise their Father God for who He truly is, He is there already. Pouring out His love. Revealing His Father’s heart for them through the help and love that so many people and organisations from around the world were, and still are, showing them. What a deep revelation of the Father that experience was for me. My own spiritual adoption into sonship was so much more about Him who had called me His “son” than about me having done or earned the right to be called a son. No newborn baby has ever done anything to earn their “daughter” or “son”-ship. Yet, many fathers would move heaven and earth for their children the second they lock eyes with them. How much more does the Father desire to do that for me and for you? How much deeper is His affection for us? The passage in Romans 8:15 “F

doesn’t end with adoption, though. Paul reveals to us that there is more to this story of sonship for all of us. I believe God shows us with His Holy Spirit and we get to experience a tiny glimpse of what heaven is going to be like, as we encounter the intimacy of our God. We can’t help but cry out “Abba, Father”! The passage is about adoption and an intimate relationship with our Father. True sonship is not about our position or our ranking as sons and daughters, but rather about the depth of our relationship with the Father that we are invited into. The communion of our hearts with our Abba is brought to life as we open ourselves up to the leading of the Holy Spirit. I wonder how differently tomorrow would look for us all if we decided to let ourselves journey into the reality of our adoption into the family of our Abba, Father.

Enveloped in Sonship Written In many ways I count myself privileged. In keeping to the theme, my gratitude today is directed at the great relationship I have with my father on earth and what a wonderful dad he is. He made some mistakes, but he raised his children with all of the love he could possibly give, with wisdom and with the safety to make mistakes. When looking at the shocking statistics of fatherlessness in South Africa (in 2017, 61.8% of children in SA didn’t have present fathers)*, the link between fatherlessness and the state of our nation starts becoming clearer. If I think about how different my life could have been if my dad was absent or if he wasn’t a great role model, I’m scared to think of how negatively that would have affected me. Fathers play a crucial role in a child’s life. God as our Father I fully believe that God created every aspect of our world with intention. Having an earthly father, even though they are human and imperfect, 13

by

Robyn Hat tingh

demonstrates what a father is and shows how essential a father’s love is. Throughout my life, whenever I’ve really needed comfort and sat down in prayer, I’d imagine myself dancing with God. Enveloped in His arms - safe, loved and being guided as we sway back and forth. It would be a similar feeling when I’d sit down with my dad while watching TV or, when I was much younger, he’d lie down with me after I woke up after a bad dream so that I’d know I was safe. I think the above image is a great visual representation of God as our Father. He is waiting for ALL of His children with open arms - waiting to embrace us as we walk into our adoption, an adoption He eagerly wants us to take because He loves us and wants to embrace us. And once we take that step of faith into His arms, we become sons and daughters, enveloped in His safety, unconditional love, and guidance. No matter how far we may stray, He is always waiting eagerly for us to walk into His arms, to walk into His adoption.

God as the Father of our Nation The capacity of God’s arms is massive. I can just imagine every person in our nation, and beyond, walking into His arms. No matter how many people walk into His embrace, there is always space. God wants each of us to claim our adoption and sonship. He wants us to walk with Him, to discuss life with Him and seek His counsel for decision-making. He wants us to be the light the world needs. Each one of us who is walking in the confidence of our sonship, needs to be the light. We need to demonstrate God’s father heart for His sons and daughters.

With fatherlessness causing a disconnect within children’s hearts, we need to be persistent and driven to share God’s character with everyone. We need to pray that God envelopes every single broken, hungry, and hardened person in our nation, so that we may see reconciliation and restoration. So that God’s Kingdom may be seen on earth, in our nation, and in each and every one of our hearts. As you enjoy the embrace of the Father right now, I pray that He softens your heart to those in your community and that your light through Him, becomes a beacon of hope for the lost and the fatherless. *SHILOH.ORG: Fatherlessness: 7 August 2019

God, My Loving Parent Written Having small children means I am constantly serving. I’m making meals and serving them, changing nappies, providing comfort, entertaining them, educating them, and the list goes on. It’s not an easy task. There are so many moments in raising my young kids where I think to myself… If I love my kids this much that I sacrifice to this extent, how can I attempt to comprehend God’s love for me – His sacrifice for me. I am His daughter. He gave up His whole life and served me. He cares about my deepest thoughts and desires and He wants the best for me. I am His daughter because the Bible says that if you are born again of God’s Spirit, you have received the Spirit of adoption (Romans 8:15), the Spirit of sonship which is the Spirit of Jesus. So, the significance of being adopted into God’s family means that I do not have to approach our Almighty God in fear and trembling. Nor with the servile spirit of a slave, or the anxious fear of someone who approaches 15

by

M e a g a n Tay l o r

a capricious God with great uncertainty! I can approach Him just as I would approach a loving parent who cares about me. Let me explain a bit more. Recently I read a story about someone who visited India. They noted how children were regarded as bonded labourers, working to repay the debts of their parents – in shackles, hammering rocks into pieces. But God, through Jesus’ life, has offered us a kinder, grace-filled alternative to spending our lives paying off our debts and those of generations before us. One of adoption, leading to sonship in the Kingdom. Christians, therefore, are like children who after years in bonded labour, have been adopted into a family – and are free from debts! We are His children. Once we enter into the reality of the experience of adoption, all fear should go! Many people, because of past experiences, suffer with a spirit of rejection. With what I believe is great insight, it has been said that the spirit of adoption casts

out a spirit of rejection! We need to enter into all that we are in Christ! Once I realised this, I felt so much freedom. How do we experience this wonderful assurance of our adoption, our sonship? We must desire it and we must hunger for it. We are often brought into a sense of desperation through various situations in life. There is a wonderful experience of the Spirit’s assurance in our hearts that has been given various names: sealing of the Spirit, infilling of the Spirit, baptism of the Spirit, or the release of the Spirit. After an experience with the Spirit, I started viewing myself as a child of

God, and that has given me an identity and a purpose. I would like to encourage you to embrace your ‘sonship’ that you have in God. As a small child clings to their parent for everything, let us cling to God… Our Father. I am so glad that I am surrounded by a community of children of God. As you support the work of CBN, you, our CBN partners, become a central part of my community. Thank you for your continuous support as we change the lives of many others all for the sake of the name of Jesus. I pray that God would continue to work through us, together, to accomplish His mission. 16

The Road to Becoming Writ ten

Participating in the sanctification process. When I read Romans 8:15-17, our scripture of interest, I start thinking about sanctification. I think about the process of becoming Christ-like and my role in that. What does it mean to be adopted? What does it mean to be grafted into the family of God? Why would God even want to adopt me? As you might have noticed, I like to ask a lot of questions. I will attempt to answer some of the questions myself and leave room for you to ponder others for yourself. In a previous article concerning our restoration theme (Arise Issue 1), I highlighted God’s greatest desire and purpose 17

by

Yo l a n d a M a g i d a

for restoration which is to redeem us to Himself. He has a relentless desire for people to have a heart that is loyal to Him. His commitment is restoring our hearts so that we may worship Him in spirit and in truth (John4:24), because our hearts are above all else deceitfully wicked (Jeremiah 17:9). I spoke about regeneration - a divine work of the Holy Spirit to transform and overcome our hard rebellious hearts (Ezekiel 11:19; Ezekiel 36:26;) so that we might believe and have faith in Him. We also looked at justification and how we get to be justified by our faith in Jesus. His righteousness is accredited to us as we take daily steps of faith towards the things revealed to us by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God (James 1:18). This

is how, I believe, we get to be sons and daughters of God. It’s an incredibly generous invitation to everyone. A peculiar one even, because before this (the invitation or gift of salvation) you are considered an enemy. An enemy He intentionally pursues so that He may call a child of God. This alone is an article for another day! So, if God has and is pursuing us, and Jesus died for us so that we are made right with God, and the Holy Spirit is transforming us… What is our role? How are we to respond? How do we participate in the process of becoming children of God? Faith - you need to possess the faith that you profess to have. I think faith is the key requirement that God asks of us in all we do. It’s the thing that unlocks everything. Without it, it is impossible to please Him. We receive Him by faith. We respond to Him by faith. We continue to respond to what is revealed to us by the Holy Spirit through his Word in FAITH. I believe this is how we are justified. It takes walking in faith to grab hold of the identity bestowed upon us by God. I always look at the life of Paul and his ministry. I think it took a lot of faith to take the Gospel to the Gentiles

despite many oppositions and challenges. That’s why he could say, in the end, that he fought a good fight of faith (2 Timothy 4:7). He actively participated in his process of becoming through faith. Meditating on the Scriptures this not only builds faith, but it serves to cleanse and wash us. This is what the Holy Spirit uses to sanctify us. It is through the Word that we are born and made children of God (Ephesians 5: 26, John 15: 3, John 17:17). I recently felt challenged by the Holy Spirit to start memorising books of the Bible. I’m still a beginner on this journey but I believe that it will bear fruit. Psalm 119: 11 reminds us to hide God’s Word in our heart so that we may not sin against Him. Meditating and memorising so that we may grow in our knowledge of Him. Submission - I think this is a simple one, yet it is hard to practice. It’s a good thing we serve a patient God. We need to affirm the word of God by obeying it. Replace old beliefs with new ones. This is what being sons and daughters of God is all about. We need to surrender to His will and His Word so that we are transformed and the road to becoming bears great fruit. 18

Q A

Q&A with Pat Robertson My friend is a Jehovah’s Witness and she said that we only have a body and do not have a soul. She added that there’s nowhere in the Bible that says we have a soul. Is there anywhere in the Bible that says we do have a body and soul? Yes, there is. The Bible most certainly does mention it. It talks about a dividing from the soul and body. First Thessalonians 5:23 (NKJV) says, “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” It’s clearly in the Bible that we are a three-part being. We have a body which, in Greek, is the sóma. We have the spirit, which is the pneuma. And we have this soul, which is the psuché. Each of the three parts is essential in God’s amazing design.
