There are four ways of transportation in Finnmark: air travel, automobile travel, coastal cruise and DNT routes. The region is highly dependent on the airports and on the Hurtigruten, and that this makes the regional tourism industry fragile. Improving and developing the infrastructure in Northern Norway that make the region more accessible having a great impact on the tourism industry.

Varanger has for a long time been a well known birding destination, which has a rich varied birdlife, some of them quite rare. Each year, large numbers of birds nest along the coast and in the spring and summer the sound of birds in the sky can be heard all over Varanger. The distance between various different biotopes in the area makes Varanger a particularly interesting region for birdwatchers. Birds of all types, from mountainbirds to seabirds can be seen within the same area.
