Catholic Charities

Archdiocese of Boston

Because of YOU, our funders, donors and volunteers, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston was able to assist 217,852 individuals last year. The programs of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston serve the poor and working poor in your community with dignity and compassion. Our agency supports families as they struggle to put food on the table, secure child care for their children and seek out better opportunities through education. At Catholic Charities, we strive to help people become self-sufficient. We could not help those in need without your generosity. Deborah Kincade Rambo President

James D. Gallagher Chair, Board of Trustees

Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2011 edition of Crossings, the Annual Report for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston. In the pages that follow, we are proud to show you the wide variety of successes we have achieved with your help—through the lenses of some of the women who are making a difference in our communities. We at Catholic Charities are keenly aware that the need for our services has never been greater, especially for women and girls. Here in the United States, more than 55 percent of the nearly 46 million people currently living in poverty are women and girls. Closer to home we know that poverty is on the rise, with more and more families, friends and neighbors in our communities struggling to make ends meet. In response we do our best to be sure that basic needs are met: that our food pantries are able to respond effectively to the still increasing demand. This year we distributed enough food for more than 1.3 million meals for those who are at risk of falling through the social safety net. Because sadly, once you’ve fallen through the social safety net, it is extraordinarily difficult to find your way back out. This is especially true for the women in our communities. At Catholic Charities we know that when women are supported and empowered, all of society benefits. That is why, each and every day we are doing all that we can to be sure to encourage the girls, teens and women we work with to set achievable goals, while also making available to them the resources necessary for their success—the education, training, tutoring, mentoring, child care—opportunities and support that are so essential to maximizing their potential in today’s world. We continue to count on you, our volunteers, our friends, and our Family, to help us to provide the services and tools which so many rely on in Eastern Massachusetts. Thank you for making the past year a success, and for providing us with the support necessary to educate and embrace families. With sincere appreciation,

Leading by example Former Teen Center leader shines as teacher

Stephanie Alves leads by example. At 26 years old, this Boston Public School teacher moved from social work to education because she felt she could reach more young people. “A lot of the students are not used to really young teachers. Not only that, they’re not used to teachers of color who are young and, here at my school, they are not used to Cape Verdean teachers,” said Alves. “I think more than anything that my presence really matters. Because it sends a message—that I grew up in the same community as you, I’m just like you and there is no reason why you can’t be where I am or even do better.” Alves has been reaching out to Boston youth since she was a young teen living in the Bowdoin Street neighborhood of Dorchester, where she became involved in the design of the Catholic Charities Teen Center at St. Peter’s. Alves became one of its first peer leaders while she was a junior at Burke High School. Programs make all the difference in the lives of young people including Alves. It was a peer mediation program at the Grover Cleveland Middle School that Alves credits as the turning point in her own life. It was in this program that she had to “prove herself to her peers.” Later she would again prove herself as a leader when she cofounded Log Radio, a radio station for young girls in Dorchester. While working in the Mayor’s Office, Alves used her social work background serving as a community liaison to the Cape Verdean community. She reached a point though when she saw too many young people dying. “And when you looked at the trend, 9 times out of 10 it was young boys without an education who dropped out of high school,” explained Alves. “I thought if I could save the kids in my classroom or the kids at my school I don’t have to worry about them being a problem in the future,” continued Alves. “I knew that education was the solution.” Education was the solution for Alves both professionally and personally. She recently completed her second Masters degree at Boston University through Teach for America. Alves has used the path of education to better herself and her community. “You have to have a willingness to want something better for yourself because people will probably always live in bad environments, always be poor, always come from difficult communities but that shouldn’t be a reason why you are held back,” says Alves. “Sure it can be an obstacle but you can overcome it too.”

Mentors at

a Young Age Young tutors set an example for youth

Milenis Cevallo, 17, of South Boston, and Danielle Cadet, 17, of Dorchester, are two successful young women who demonstrate the power of hard work and dedication. Both girls work as tutors in the Labouré Center’s Youth Tutoring Youth (YTY) program. Youth Tutoring Youth matches tutors age 16 to 19 with younger students in grades 3 through 6. Cevallo feels Madison Park High School, where she is finishing her senior year, has really prepared her to become a nurse. Already trained and certified as a Nursing Assistant, she was able to use the vocational high school to focus her career goals. Cevallo credits a Big Sister for showing her the tools needed to be a successful woman. Her Big Sister was a caring, positive person who proved a good role model for Cevallo while in elementary school. In turn, she looks to provide the same to her young students. “It’s about being a positive role model and making good decisions,” explained Cevallo. “Knowing this group of kids needed help, I saw working at YTY as a good opportunity for me.” Cevallo has received a Torch Scholarship from Northeastern University where she will begin her studies this September. Torch Scholarships, four-year, full-tuition awards, are given to “individuals who have overcome exceptional odds and who demonstrate the potential to excel academically.” Cadet, an Excel High School senior, values education, friendships and a strong work ethic. She believes great leaders take time to listen to people before making decisions and they are flexible. “To be a leader, it has to be in you,” Cadet said. “You have to have that drive.” Cadet has been named a Posse Scholar. Posse Scholars receive four-year, full-tuition leadership

scholarships from a Posse partner college or university. Cadet will be attending Bryn Mawr College this fall. Both Cevallo and Cadet grew up in single mother households with mothers who encouraged them to succeed. “Ever since I was young my Mom stressed education because she did not get past the fifth grade in the Dominican Republic,” stated Cevallo. “Nursing is what I want and it is my main goal.” Without a father figure, Cadet feels you can’t help but think you missed out on something. But Cevallo, sees it a bit differently “Research shows you need two parents for successful kids,” said Cevallo. “Well, I’ve been trying to prove that statistic wrong.”

Parenting again She knew it was all worth it when she looked proudly at the trophies and awards that line her granddaughter’s bureau. But for Barbara Ludinsky, a grandparent raising her two grandchildren with the help of her husband, Charles, the road has not been easy.

Ludinsky took the two children into her care when they were three and one years old. Her daughter was dealing with an addiction and struggling to care for the two children, one with numerous medical issues. “It gets to the point where you know this is a crisis. What do you do?,” explained Ludinsky. “I couldn’t walk away.” At the time, Ludinsky was working as a successful systems analyst and traveling the country on business. Bringing her grandson to and from doctor’s appointments while also tending to her granddaughter became too much. Ludinsky left her career to parent again full-time. Ludinsky credits the Grandparents as Parent (GAP) Program at Merrimack Valley Catholic Charities and past GAP director Rachelle Comtois with providing her a “safe nurturing space” to find help as she navigated the waters of parenting for a second time. “You need to do a lot of research to determine your options,” explained Ludinsky. Today, Ludinsky’s grandchildren are 15 and 13. They are thriving academically and involved in sports and activities. Ludinsky stays active in the GAP program. She still faithfully attends GAP meetings designed to support and empower grandparents raising their grandchildren.

E D U CAT I O N opens doors Marie Louisseint of Brockton is on the road to self-sufficiency one step at a time at the English Transcultural Center at Catholic Charities South in Brockton. She immigrated here from Haiti four years ago with her husband and family. Her mother was already taking classes at the English Transcultural Center and recommended that Louisseint enroll. She has benefitted from three English for Speakers of Other Languages classes, one Citizens Class and the Home Health Aide Training program. Today, she works as a Home Health Aide in Scituate and at CVS. Louisseint’s dream is to become a “nurse without borders.” “Here you have more opportunity,” explained Louisseint. “You can go to school at any age.” 8 CROSSINGS | www.ccab.org

Ashlen Price of Dorchester appears to have it all together. It hasn’t been easy but she does not come from “a background of quitters.” Price spent three years with the Urban Neighborhood Healthy Families Program at Greater Boston Catholic Charities. She came to the program when her son, Kenneth, was just one-month-old and was matched with home visitor Sarah McLaughlin. Healthy Families is a home visiting program for first-time parents age 24 and under. The program focuses on parents and children receiving adequate medical care, being economically self-reliant, and attaining educational goals. Price is the definition of strength and confidence according to McLaughlin. “Through the years she became a role model to many including myself,” stated McLaughlin. “She left an abusive relationship to save her son, faced eviction and fought to stay in her home in order to avoid going into a shelter, worked numerous jobs to provide for her family and attended college to better herself and to act as a positive role model for Kenneth.” The two have formed a special bond over the three years. McLaughlin helped Price with housing, food, child care and parenting skills. Yet, the most valuable assistance was a listening ear. “It helps so much to have someone who listens,” said Price of McLaughlin. “By talking things out you can come up with lots of different solutions.” Today, Price works full-time and attends college. Her son, Kenneth is thriving in Catholic Charities Child Care. Of her positive outlook, Price explains, “You have to do the best with what you are given.”

Year in review - 2011 In April 2011, Catholic Charities participated in the Boston Marathon for the third consecutive year. Running in the 2011 Boston Marathon for Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Boston were Dan Arone, Kim Greene, Vin Greene and Valerie Truell. More than 570 friends and supporters joined Catholic Charities in May 2011 to honor Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., President Emeritus, University of Notre Dame, with the Justice and Compassion Award for a life committed to faith, education and public service. Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., President of Notre Dame, accepted the Justice and Compassion Award on behalf of Rev. Hesburgh, who was unable to attend the event. Our annual Spring Celebration was attended by Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, OFM Cap., hosted by Catholic Charities President Deborah Kincade Rambo, LICSW with national journalist Mark Shields as Master of Ceremonies. John J. Mahoney, Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer of Staples, and Brian T. Moynihan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Bank of America, served as co-chairs of the event. Also held in May was the Catholic Charities North Spring Gala which presented A Salute to Partnership Awards to Helene and Timothy (19232011) Guinee and their family and Our Lady of the Assumption Parish and Father John Farrell. Catholic Charities South honored Jim and Terry Orcutt, founders of My Brother’s Keeper, at their Spring Gala Delivering Hope. Ed Gilmore was honored posthumously with the Peggy Simons Care and Compassion Award. At the Labouré Center 29th Annual Spring Reception, Don Rodman was honored with the Labouré Center Service Award. Lewis Demetroulakos was honored with the Partner’s in Mission Award during Merrimack Valley Catholic Charities Spring Gala. Friends of Sunset Point Camp held their second annual Reach for the Stars Clambake to benefit Sunset Point Camp in Hull. Donors hit the runway for fashion shows throughout the year. Gals, Giggles & Giving was held in Canton to support Catholic Charities South. The show featured fashion from Ellie Kai and Envy Boutique. At the Labouré Center, their fifth annual Fashion Show featured the designs of Sara Campbell and Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Inc. Catholic Charities North hosted Fashion Forward for Education with fashion by designer Denise Hajjar. The fall kicked off sporting events including the Friends of Catholic Charities South Golf Tournament and the Rodman Ride for Kids. Catholic Charities of Boston had 15 riders participate in the Rodman Ride to support the children and youth programs throughout Catholic Charities. The golf tournament helped fund the Thanksgiving food drive and Basic Needs Services at Catholic Charities South.

The fall was also marked by our Friends Feeding Families Campaign. Hunger Knows No Face, the theme of Catholic Charities’ fourth annual Friends Feeding Families Brown Bag Campaign, inspired friends and supporters throughout Eastern Massachusetts to collect food, donate grocery store gift cards or host Brown Bag events of their own to help us serve individuals and families in need. Over 3,700 donors gave $865,826 in contributions and donated food, 42% more donors and 27% more donations than in 2010. Catholic Charities is particularly grateful to our Brown Bag sponsors who funded the durable, recycled cloth bags which were so popular with both donors filling bags for our pantries, and with families receiving groceries. Our sponsors were: Arbella Insurance Group Charitable Foundation, Blue Hills Bank, Century Bank, Eastern Bank, Kevin and Rita Gill, Gourmet Caterers, Highland Street Foundation, John Hancock, Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications, Rick Lord, Massachusetts State Council Knights of Columbus, NSTAR and Roche Bros. Supermarkets. The holiday season was a busy one for Catholic Charities providing Thanksgiving meals to over 5,000 families in November 2011 from sites in Dorchester, South Boston, the South End, Lynn, Lowell, Haverhill, Somerville and Brockton. Catholic Charities collaborated with United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley as part of their 14th Annual Thanksgiving Project. More than 300 volunteers and financial support from local businesses made Thanksgiving meals possible for many families throughout the Archdiocese. At Catholic Charities North and Catholic Charities South, large toy drives helped make families’ Christmas season a little brighter. Catholic Charities South collaborated with the Office of Mayor Linda M. Balzotti, The Shaw’s Center / The Brockton Rox, The Salvation Army, United Way of Greater Plymouth County, Metro South Chamber of Commerce, The Rotary Club of Brockton, and The Charity Guild to distribute Christmas gifts to approximately 1,600 families in need during the City of Champions Annual Holiday Toy Drive. Catholic Charities North Christmas Giving Program served more than 1,600 children from 620 families with donations from parishes, businesses and many diverse local groups who held toy drives. Catholic Charities Greater Boston recognized James T. Brett, President and CEO of The New England Council, with the Richard D. Armstrong, Jr. Service Award during their annual Christmas Dinner. The award was given in recognition of a life of service and commitment to those in need. Other events over the holiday season included the Labouré Center’s 21st Annual Christmas House Tour. Thank you to all who helped and supported these events this year! 2011 Annual Report | CROSSINGS 11

Dear Friends, I hope that the past year has been as kind to you as you have been to Catholic Charities and to those we are privileged to serve. This annual report highlights the success stories of just a few of the clients who benefitted from your generous support of our programs and services. Thanks to the generosity of everyone listed in this report and so many more than our space allows, we received over $7.1 million from approximately 9,000 donors who made more than 15,000 gifts. You enabled us to provide emergency assistance to over 200,000 of our neighbors during fiscal year 2011. Kenneth P. Binder Vice President of Development

Fiscal year 2011 was the third year of our Friends Feeding Families campaign which raises funds, food and awareness about our food pantries and hunger in our communities.

Thanks to your generosity we were able to feed more than 130,000 of our neighbors during the year while 30,000 families had a better holiday because we were able to provide assistance thanks to your support. Our annual signature event, Spring Celebration, saw more than 575 people come together at the Westin Waterfront Hotel to honor Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., President Emeritus, University of Notre Dame with our annual Justice and Compassion Award. In addition to raising $1.6 million for our programs and services, this was a celebration of education and collaboration as many local Notre Dame Alumni joined us for this event. The funds raised from Spring Celebration help us get our new fiscal year off to a good start. And today the demand for our programs and services continues to be high. From our early education programs that provide children with safe and nurturing care, to our programs that provide access to life’s most basic needs, such as food and shelter, this demand shows no sign of decreasing in the near future. Because of your support throughout fiscal year 2011 we also were able to: • Care for more than 1,700 children through our childcare programs. • Provide a safe haven, tutoring and mentoring to more than 400 teens in greater Boston. • Assist more than 17,000 immigrants and refugees to become active and productive members of their new community. There are many worthwhile causes to support and there is truly as great a need today as there ever was, therefore we are both appreciative and honored that you choose to support Catholic Charities with your personal and financial support. With the gratitude of all of us at Catholic Charities and those that we serve—thank you.
