Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2012 edition of Crossings, the Annual Report for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston. In the pages that follow, we hope that you will find the same inspiration that drives us each day as we serve the Greater Boston community and beyond.

Helping families along the road to self sufficiency is central to our work, and we are inspired by the strength and determination of so many of the families we are privileged to know.

Families like those headed by Lori, a Home Health Aid program graduate, who shows us what can be possible with a little determination and perseverance: a whole new life for both she and her family filled with promise, hope and excitement.

We know that you will be amazed by the resiliency and compassion of our former client and now treasured volunteer, Derek Wolfe. At just fourteen years old, Derek engaged his family and friends at Bright Horizons Foundation in his effort to give back—paying it forward as they spent weeks transforming space at St. Ambrose Family Shelter into an oasis for homeless teens.

We are both thankful and touched by the openness of Board of Trustees member, Tom O’Reilly, his wife, Liza and their daughters, who share why they support Catholic Charities. Their perspective on universal values that encompass family, social justice and philanthropy are truly uplifting.

Despite these stories of hope, Catholic Charities faces challenges each and every day to meet the needs of our community. Although Massachusetts has weathered the recession better than most states the impact of the great recession is still apparent. One benchmark is the National School Lunch program, available to families of four with annual incomes of less than $37,000. The Program reported a steady increase in demand between 2006 and 2011 with 34.2 percent of the state’s K-12 students enrolled in the free and reduced price lunch program. In 2011, 327,000 pupils were receiving assistance.

In response to poverty in Massachusetts schools and in our neighbors’ homes, we do our best to ensure that basic needs are met: that our food pantry shelves are stocked and that our social workers are there to support families. This year we distributed enough food for more than 1.34 million meals for those who are at risk of falling through the social safety net.

Of course, we could not do what we do, without all that you do to support us. For that we are grateful. You are champions of our cause.

Paying it forward

Derek doesn’t remember the shelter. But, he does remember some of the twenty foster homes he lived in until his adoption at the age of 7 by Frannie Crockett-Wolfe and her husband, Scott. Crockett-Wolfe, Bright Horizons Center Director, remembers well the day she took Derek home.

“When Derek became part of our family and saw his new room, I will never forget him saying, ‘When I grow up, I am going to make sure every kid with no home has toys like I do now!’ ” Now 14, Derek anxiously looks through the Play Station games in the new Teen Space to make sure the teens have the new Super Mario Brothers game. He talks confidently as he describes his passion for video games, basketball and percussion instruments. Yet, when describing himself he hesitates saying softly, “Well I’m nice and kind.”

To Frannie Crockett-Wolfe, Catholic Charities’ St. Ambrose Family Shelter has been part of her life since she was a child. When growing up around the corner from the shelter in Dorchester, Crockett-Wolfe remembers accompanying her mother to bring gifts of toys and food to the shelter at the holidays. So, when she decided to raise money to design a shelter play space, St. Ambrose seemed like a natural choice.

“It was sort of like me giving back, paying it forward,” explained Crockett-Wolfe. “St. Ambrose took care of him when he was young so it was our turn to say thank you.”

his past Fall, Bright Horizons Foundation teamed up with 14-year-old Derek Wolfe and his family to turn a dark basement space into a bright retreat for homeless youth. Little did many know that Derek himself lived at the shelter when he was an infant and again as a toddler.

Yet, raising the $10,000 needed to furnish and design the space was not as simple. By collaborating with another Bright Horizons facility, the Reebok Child Care Center and its director Monique Dasilva, The Children’s Center at Milton Academy made their $5,000 goal. The two centers hosted bake sales and did a 5k walk-a-thon to reach it. The Bright Horizons Foundation then matched their contribution. From there, Derek went to work helping his mother pick out “cool” things for the Teen Bright Space.

“I gave them lots of help—I wanted to put everything in there that every other teenager had so they could feel like a regular kid,” explained Derek. The finishing touch, Derek used his own money which he earned through odd jobs around the neighborhood to purchase an air hockey table for the space.

Crockett-Wolfe, her family, Bright Horizons volunteers, and college students from Emmanuel College spent time over three weeks transforming the space to a bright, welcoming home for homeless teens. Derek did not see the finished room until the ribbon cutting. He admits that he did not think they could pull it off after seeing the before pictures of the space.

He was happy when it was finally done.

“It made me realize that even though I am still young that I can make a difference. I loved seeing the kids so excited to play with all of the things, especially my gift I gave to them—the air hockey table! It looks better than I ever imagined,” said Derek about the ribbon cutting. “I felt proud, and I can’t wait to do the next space.”

Derek does not talk often about being adopted, but his mother said he becomes more comfortable with it as he gets older. With all of the charity work that the Bright Horizons does, Crockett-Wolfe thought this one was special. “You need to see a person. It’s not always the story you see in your head. When you give a face to all the hard work,” explained Crockett-Wolfe. “The impact is so much greater.”

Derek agrees, “At the ribbon cutting, I realized that Mom and Dad didn’t just work hard to provide a great life for me and my brother, they did it for all these people that they don’t even know!”

Finding Faith

L

ori Monaghan wasn’t living the journey she wanted and longed for a better life for her and her two young children. One day, she found it while dropping her kids off at child care in South Boston.

“Everyday, I kept seeing signs for Labouré Center’s nurse assistant training program,” explained Monaghan, a South Boston resident. And everyday, she passed it by as she went on with her hectic life as a single, working mother to Daryn, 7 and Morgan, 4. But on that one day, she knew she had enough and wanted more.

With daily living expenses, Monaghan knew the $993 tuition would be a struggle but was determined. She was determined because she already loved the staff at the Labouré Center and knew that the program would be worth the effort.

She enrolled in 2010 and has never looked back. She loved the classes and the curriculum. Monaghan delighted in the fact that every once in a while her children, who were in the same building, would walk by the door with their classmates. “It brightened my day,” she said.

Monaghan, who had worked for years in the food service business, found a job shortly after graduating from the program. “I got a job right away,” she explained. “This experience taught me not to take life for granted. Today, I am proud to say I support my own kids.”

Monaghan still visits the Center each day to pick up her youngest child who attends the Labouré Child Care Center, and, occasionally, also brings her children to the Center’s counseling program. Labouré has opened up a new world for her and her children.

“[My children] have learned so much and the friends they have met along the way have been so important,” explained Monaghan. “Also, you socialize with other parents. Meeting other people and other cultures causes you to see things with an open mind.”

As for her education, Monaghan credits Claire Lyons, Nurse Assistant Program Manager and Nurse Instructor, for her kindness and helpfulness. Lyons also provided her study group opportunities on Saturdays and taught her breathing exercises to help her with exams. “As an alumna, she still helps me and gives referrals,” said Monaghan.

Monaghan loves taking care of people, and her new career is a perfect fit. She recommends the nurse assistant training program to others, as well as the child care program.

“The teachers are fantastic.” She put her second child on the list for care months after he was born. It is the only child care center in South Boston that cares for infants.

“It’s hard to find a place I know my kids are safe, “ she explained. “Every teacher here is heartwarming and caring but they also have a routine and a curriculum.

They help them to grow.”

“Not only were my kids raised by me at home,” she boasted.

“They were raised right here at the Labouré Center.”

“I didn’t always put myself and my children first,” said Monaghan as she reflected about the new direction her life has taken.

“I lost faith in myself and then I found it again.”

Champions for a cause

he O’Reilly family knows how to give. They care deeply about the work of Catholic Charities and are passionate supporters of Sunset Point Camp in Hull. Tom and Liza O’Reilly’s generous spirit is being passed on through their family. They see service as their family time—a time to do something together, enjoy each other’s company while also giving back.

“As a married couple of different religious faiths, Catholic Charities provides an outlet for us to express our shared values and the values that we want to pass onto our children,” explained Tom. “Catholic Charities fulfills the Social Justice mission of the Catholic Church. Its values and our values in recognizing and caring for those in need are totally aligned. They are the values on which we were raised. We believe in people and their worth. We believe in hands on involvement.”

During camp clean ups, Catholic Charities staff welcomes their family which includes their daughters, Agnes, Cecilia and Jacquelyn. Liza thinks that the family bond is what attracts many to support the camp. “I saw it as an opportunity to get families involved in their own community,” explained Liza.

Tom agrees, “Liza and I believe in investing our time, talent, and treasure in our community. We define community as our family, our neighborhood, our parish, our town, the organizations to which we belong, our state, our country, and our world. We believe in that old adage: “think globally - act locally.”

“We also like the idea of supporting kids,” Liza continued. “And especially giving inner-city children the same opportunities that our children have readily available to them. It is also a way for our children to help other children from diverse backgrounds. Everyone needs help and we should use what we have to help others.”

“We loved its mission: serving underprivileged children; bringing them a week of summer camp fun; letting them know that they are worthy, too,” said Tom. The night of the Friends of Sunset Point Camp annual clambake, Reach for the Stars, the O’Reilly’s can be seen greeting each guest as if they were coming into their own home. The annual fundraising event is a culmination of a lot of hard work by the event committee which includes Tom and Liza.

“I can’t begin to say enough about the O’Reilly’s,” said Beth Chambers, Sunset Point Camp Director.

“They help out wherever and whenever they can.

They are great role models to the youth at the camp and they are great friends.”

On Treasure Night, a weekly event for campers in the warm summer months, Liza O’Reilly and her daughters can be seen with a host of local residents leading games and other activities for the young campers. The O’Reillys will tell you they are just one of many volunteers and supporters who make it all happen.

They also get the chance to be with some amazing children. “It is great doing both at the same time,” said Agnes who loves that she can have fun and help out simultaneously.

“The campers are genuinely having fun and that is great to see in any child. Once, I was helping this little, tiny girl who was maybe six. Her brother, maybe 8 or 9, came over to check on her and handed her some tokens since she didn’t have as many,” recalled Liza.

“And I just thought, ‘That’s a good kid looking out for his sister.’ Even though some of these kids don’t have much, they have great values. It is great to see they are raised with the same values as my kids despite different circumstances.”

It is truly a large family that takes care of the 300 Boston youth who visit Hull each summer. It is the O’Reilly family and others that come for each clean up, each meeting and each fundraiser. It is their spirit that makes it possible.

Tom O’Reilly gives of his time and talent on the Catholic Charities Board of Trustees as well advising the agency on everything from strategy to finances to fundraising.

He believes in the organization he supports and encourages others to do the same. “What good is money if you just hold on to it? Money is meant to be invested and spent. It is only valuable if it is put to work. You know the old saying, “It takes money to make money.”

“The O’Reillys are always there with welcoming smiles, great ideas and a willingness to be of help. They truly live the mission of Catholic Charities,” said Deborah Kincade Rambo, Catholic Charities President.

“They are champions for our cause. And for that we are eternally grateful.”

A total of 9,045 donors contributed approximately 16,200 gifts, an increase of 6% over 2011, to support the mission of Catholic Charities.

Approximately 4,250 donors increased their contribution over the previous year and 1,846 donors contributed their first gift to Catholic Charities.

Over $7.3M raised through major, leadership and planned giving, events and direct mail.

Our Friends Feeding Families campaign, in its fourth year, raised $874,518 from 3,816 donors, the highest ever in support of our Basic Needs Emergency Services.

For the sixth consecutive year, our annual Spring Celebration event held at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum, raised over $1M to support programs and services.

Along with your continued financial support for the 2013 annual campaign, I ask that you consider a lasting legacy to Catholic Charities by including our agency in your estate plan, contributing to a building project or donating a gift to strengthen a specific program of interest to you.
