“This is part of my legacy.” —Jack Shaughnessy

The Shaughnessy Companies and former member of Catholic Charities Board of Trustees

When you remember Catholic Charities in your will or estate plan, you're adding to your legacy the care of thousands of families in need without impacting your current lifestyle.

“A

fter my wife died, I began to spend more time with the organizations she and I had been so devoted to, especially Catholic Charities. I was looking for ways to give that would mean keeping her commitment to Catholic Charities alive. I decided to make a bequest to Catholic Charities—but I had just re-written my will, and I didn’t want to spend the time and go through the expense of having a new document drawn just to add this bequest. My lawyer told me that I could set up the gift through a codicil to my existing will. He told me that a codicil is a simple document that makes specific changes to a will but leaves everything else alone. It’s a great solution for making minor adjustments to an estate plan you’re otherwise happy with. He informed me that the gift could be cash, stocks and bonds, life insurance or the home that we lived in. He had the codicil ready for me to sign in two days.

When we make the needs of the poor a priority, even the simplest actions can be meaningful and manageable. This gift cost me nothing during my lifetime, but I know it will allow Catholic Charities to continue its mission and good work. With thoughtful planned giving you can ensure both the longterm health of Catholic Charities and the fulfillment of your personal financial objectives. Contact us today to learn more: Kenneth P. Binder, Vice President of Development, at (617) 451-7962 or ken_binder@ccab.org.

Deborah Kincade Rambo President

Jeffrey J. Kaneb Chair, Board of Trustees

Welcome to the 2010 edition of Crossings, the Annual Report for Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of Boston. In the pages that follow, we are proud to show you the wide variety of successes we have achieved with your help—from our work in response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, to keeping pace with the ever-growing demands in our food pantries. At Catholic Charities, we are passionate about embracing families. For us, this means ensuring that families and individuals from all walks of life have the same opportunities for success and have access to programs and services to meet fundamental needs. Education programs are one of the most important services we provide across all of the communities we serve. Beginning with early childhood education at our childcare centers—which all consistently receive the prominent National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation— Catholic Charities and our more than 2,000 volunteers are dedicated to the importance of education. By providing services at every level—including adult education programs, afterschool programs for teens, tutoring programs, education programs for immigrants, and education in training programs to re-enter the workforce—we are preparing students of all ages and educational levels to succeed. It seems that every year we tell you there were extraordinary challenges and this year is no different. Funding at the state and federal level continues to decrease and we continue to be challenged to find creative ways to fund our programs and expand those which are most in demand. We continue to depend on you, our volunteers, our friends, and our neighbors, to help us to provide the services and tools on which so many in Eastern Massachusetts rely. Thank you for making the past year a success, and for providing us with the support necessary to embrace and educate families. With sincere gratitude,

Positive Behavior in Child Care

“Our job here is to help children be ready to succeed,” says Janet MacDougall, Director of Catholic Charities’ Lynn Child Care Center. To keep this commitment, Catholic Charities has invested in training its teachers in the Social and Emotional Development of children. The newest initiative that the Child Care Division has become involved with is the Pyramid Model of Positive Behavior Supports (PBS). The model was developed by the Center for the Social Emotional Foundations of Early Learning (CSEFEL), Head Start, and the US Department of Health and Human Services. The PBS model supports the social and emotional well being of children by focusing on relationships, supportive environments, and teaching strategies. Lynn Child Care is one of four in the state that has been chosen to implement this model with training and support from the Massachusetts CSEFEL Statewide Planning Team, under the auspices of the Connected Beginnings Training Institute.

plan of intensive intervention for the few children who are not responding to the program. “It’s more than a command or, a simple, ‘How are you doing?’ and walk away. Let’s really get to know kids and let’s really involve ourselves in their lives, in their likes and dislikes. That becomes the focus,” explained MacDougall. Once the program is rolled out, MacDougall hopes to see “kids playing and interacting more appropriately. Taking turns, sharing, helping, developing that empathy for others.” It’s really about the whole program working together to provide consistent, systematic, positive behavior support for children, families, and staff members.

The PBS training is provided in four modules over four days. The foundation of the training is the implementation of nurturing and responsive relationships for all children. For the first session, teachers spend time learning about the importance of relationships, and the best ways to establish and nurture them. The second module addresses creating a high quality supportive environment. These two elements form the base of the pyramid and are essential for all children. The third module of the PBS training is about prevention of challenging behavior, and how to provide targeted emotional supports to children at risk of challenging behavior. The final module helps identify a

This is not the first time that Catholic Charities has committed itself to an initiative focused on the social and emotional development of children. In 2009, all of Catholic Charities child care staff and certified care providers took part in Mind in the Making. The Mind in the Making training program takes what science has learned about the emotional and educational development of children ages newborn to five, and translates those findings into applications for teachers, enhancing their understanding of child development and contributing to intentional teaching that addresses the needs of individual children, as well as the class as a whole.

Education in Focus Before Alexandra enrolled her son, Damien, 10, in Youth Tutoring Youth (YTY) at the Labouré Center, she struggled each day to make sure that Damien was doing his homework. As late as 10 o’clock at night, it was always, “Damien, did you finish your homework yet?” Damien and Alexandra’s experience epitomizes a typical challenge for YTY parents: finding time to help with homework amidst busy schedules. Lack of familiarity with academic skills and content also frequently serves as a barrier to advancing in-home learning. Many parents are unable to actively engage with teachers due to linguistic limitations. Not uncommonly, a cultural divide and a lack of proficiency in navigating the American school system further compound difficulties with supporting school success.

Academic Success at Youth Tutoring Youth

The common profile of a YTY student is a firstgeneration American whose parents speak primarily Spanish. He resides in one of South Boston’s government-subsidized housing complexes, faces economic disadvantages, and confronts at least one, but more often all, of the aforementioned educational challenges. A significant portion of students also has special education needs. Keenly aware of these prevailing circumstances, YTY provides a free after school program to South Boston students. Under the supervision of a licensed educator, tutors aged 15 to 18 help younger students in grades three through six complete homework and provide extra help in key subjects. Research identifies positive family interactions, parental involvement in a child’s education, and academic success as factors that heavily impact a child’s future success. YTY targets these areas with intentional practices aimed at building protective factors to promote resiliency in youth and to provide a holistic support network for youth. To boost academic success, YTY tutors work daily with the same students in a small-group setting. Alexandra praises the match between Damien and his tutor, Taneyri, for its consistency. She also appreciates the

individualized strategies that help Damien with organization and writing, Taneyri’s regular communication with Damien’s teacher, and her daily updates. Not only have his academics improved but, according to his mother, so has Damien’s confidence.

Additionally, program coordinators communicate regularly with teachers to learn what a student’s greatest academic and socioemotional needs are and to ensure the tutors’ work with students is translating back to the classroom. The teachers’ and tutors’ efforts with students is then communicated to parents through monthly letters home, which are translated into simple Spanish for accessibility. Coordinators also conduct biweekly phone check-ins to build rapport with parents, to involve them in their child’s experience at the program, to establish open dialogue about their child’s progress, and to help them to advocate for their child’s education. The program demonstrates to families, “Yes, we want you here. We want you involved. We are on your side. We want what is best for your child, too.” These efforts are supplemented by monthly Saturday Family Fun Days. The 2- to 4-hour events were started by parents at a YTY workshop to provide a forum for positive family interactions and to build community among other families through shared experiences. The fact that they are well-attended demonstrates the need for and appreciation of such exchanges. Says Alexandra of the events, “Damien looks forward to it every time. He is always the first one up and ready, reminding me, ‘Mom, it’s Family Fun Day today!’” “Everyone that is involved in Damien’s life is on the same page,” explained Alexandra. For the coordinators of the program, no feedback could be better. 2010 Annual Report | CROSSINGS 7

Education in Focus The Education Center at Catholic Charities North affords individuals with a second chance to get back on track to complete their education and set personal goals for their future. “I needed a new start,” shared Yasmin Negron, a young mother who began the Young Parent GED program in February 2010. In her class at the Education Center in Lynn, Negron found a learning environment that met her unique needs. “I’ve learned a lot because in high school I was barely in school because of my (responsibilities to my) daughter.” Upon graduation, Negron hopes to continue her education at North Shore Community College and become a pediatric nurse. Many students like Negron who faced adversities and challenges in a traditional school structure find that smaller, more flexible classes of 7-10 students and dedicated instructors and case managers afford them

A New Start at the Education

the learning environment they need to attain their educational goals. Ricardo Aristide, 21, left high school due to attendance issues and has been in the Youth Works program for a year and a half. His experience has proved a positive transition, as Aristide has completed many career development opportunities, including a summer internship and a youth advocacy program at Harvard University.

Although Aristide is currently waiting to take the GED test, it hasn’t always been easy. Writing has been his biggest challenge. Building from one word to complete essays is one example of his instructor’s encouragement and her “pushing and pushing” Center him to practice and develop confidence. But, today, Aristide is all smiles when he talks about the dedication his instructor has shown in ensuring that he never gave up. Fran Troutman, Director of Education and Training Services, believes that the unique and positive environment at The Education Center helps students focus on learning and allows them to step away from their stress and hardship. In addition to GED preparation, all students develop computer literacy skills, complete a financial literacy course and have an opportunity to develop the work readiness skills that lead to economic self-sufficiency. “They become part of a learning community that promotes student achievement, service and leadership,” Troutman explains. “This program helped me get focused to start thinking about my future,” said Aristide who is excited to graduate and get a job to save money before applying to school. With opportunities to participate in full-time GED programs like the Education Center’s Young Parent Program and YouthWorks (ages 16-21), as well as a part-time evening GED program TeenStart (ages 16-24) young adults like Negron and Aristide not only get the help they need to be successful in the classroom, but develop a foundation of skills sets that will help them be successful in life. Negron and Aristide are currently testing and are candidates to graduate with their GED in June 2011.

Adult Learners in English for Speakers of Other Languages Catholic Charities South’s English Transcultural Center exists to meet the English language, education, employment, and social service needs of immigrants. They teach basic reading, speaking, and writing skills. “They helped me a lot. First thing is the English. This is the first thing we need and I got help for that,” said Roody, an immigrant who came here from Haiti four years ago. Today, Roody works as a Nurse Assistant at Brockton Hospital and volunteers in the English Transcultural Center as a computer assistant. “It’s like payback for Catholic Charities being good to me,” explained Roody. “I learned; so I just want to pay back.”

2010 Highlight STUDENT WINS STATE AWARD The Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education recognized Catholic Charities El Centro del Cardenal student Tihilina Kirova with the Outstanding Student Award. “Lina is patient, knowledgeable, and flexible, and always looking to improve her skills. She has helped to strengthen the computer curriculum to respond to student interests. She has mentored students who have taught units in the curriculum,” said Robert Hibbard from El Centro del Cardenal. “As an adult learner, Lina has experienced outstanding growth and made important contributions to her community.”

Catholic Charities offers English for Speakers of Other Languages classes in Brockton, Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Lynn, and South Boston. The Jamaica Plain-based program, El Centro del Cardenal, has

been consistently ranked as one of the best adult learning centers in Greater Boston by the Department of Education. The goal of all of the centers is to empower adults by increasing their employment opportunities and self-sufficiency through practical, dynamic instruction.

“I’m living proof that Catholic Charities does what it says,” said Clothilde, a graduate of the English Transcultural Center and the Nurse Assistant Training Program. “Helping people through all the stages of their lives including becoming a provider for their family.” 2010 Annual Report | CROSSINGS 9

2010 Highlights

Haiti Earthquake Response Efforts Catholic Charities Haitian Multi-Service Center, Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigration Services, and Catholic Charities Greater Boston worked tirelessly to support the victims of the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti—both those who lived in Boston prior to the earthquake and to the over 1,000 victims who arrived in Boston after the earthquake. Catholic Charities staff provided food and rental assistance to host families, gave legal consultation and assistance to Haitians applying for Temporary Protected Status and other immigration benefits, conducted culturally sensitive mental health trauma groups, and expanded ESOL programs to include newly arrived victims.

Refugee and Immigration Services received over 500 hours of valuable pro bono support from local law firms and the NE Chapter of American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) to provide Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Clinics. One of our primary partners, the firm of Mintz Levin, honored Attorney Jeff Goldman as the 2010 Pro Bono Award recipient due to his efforts to help train, staff, and give legal guidance during the TPS Clinics as well as provide pro bono representation of individual cases. To date, 20 TPS Clinics were held and services provided to over 1,000 Haitians seeking reputable and free legal guidance and assistance. Catholic Charities will reinstitute clinics in summer 2011 to help Haitians reapply for TPS and continue advocacy with the Obama administration to provide temporary legal status and work authorization for the thousands of Haitians who arrived after the earthquake and cannot return to Haiti. Friends Feeding Families a Success Catholic Charities’ Friends Feeding Families Brown Bag campaign completed its third successful fundraising year in December, collecting $668,838 from 2,609 donors who helped individuals and families put food on their tables and pay utility bills. The Friends Feeding Families campaign was designed to raise awareness and increase resources for Catholic Charities Basic Needs Emergency Services that provide food, fuel, or rental assistance at 12 locations in Eastern Massachusetts. Catholic Charities is grateful to its Brown Bag sponsors whose support made durable, recycled cloth bags possible for the campaign. The Brown Bag—our call to action—again proved an effective tool to mobilize supporters. By the end of our campaign, Catholic Charities had hosted 37 Brown Bag parties, 37% more parties than in 2009. We also collected 13% more bags of groceries than last year and 9% more grocery store gift cards than last year’s campaign.

Parties were hosted in private homes, businesses, schools, and parishes. Returning party hosts included Ernst & Young, Marcum LLP, the Kenney Family of Milton, the Northeastern University Catholic Student Center, Trinity Catholic in Brockton and WBUR to name a few. New hosts included St. Mary’s High School in Lynn, Brockton Hospital, Presentation of Mary Academy in Methuen, Stop & Shop staff in Brockton and Siemens Industry, Inc. Building Technologies in Canton. 2010 Brown Bag sponsors were: Bay Point Capital, Century Bank, The Highland Street Foundation, John Hancock, Rick Lord, NSTAR, Massachusetts State Council – Knights of Columbus, McCuskerGill, Inc., Laura McTaggart and Tom Nolan, Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications, Roche Bros. Supermarkets, and Tufts Health Plan Foundation. Catholic Charities is grateful to all our donors and friends whose generous support of the campaign enabled us to meet the rising demand for Basic Needs Emergency Services across the diocese in 2010.

Sunset Point Reaches for the Stars The Friends of Sunset Point Camp hosted a fundraising clambake, “Reach for the Stars,” this past year to raise funds for the camp. It was a grand success! Over $40,000 was raised during the event. The summer camp season closed with a thank you celebration.

• 9,200 donors contributed 15,300 gifts to Catholic Charities through various fundraising efforts including personal solicitations, direct mail and events with 2,100 as first-time donors. • Our Friends Feeding Families campaign, in its third year, continues to exceed its annual campaign goal while raising awareness and financial support for our Basic Needs Emergency Services. • On May 20, 2010, we presented our Justice and Compassion Award to Ken Hackett, President of Catholic Relief Services at our annual signature event, Spring Celebration, which raised approximately $1.35M. • Area businesses, corporations, and foundations continue to support Catholic Charities through a variety of fundraising activities. Their involvement provides critical funding to assist the agency. There are many worthwhile causes to support, therefore we are not only appreciative but also honored that you have deemed Catholic Charities worthy of your time and financial assistance. In so doing, you have helped improve the quality of life for the many people we serve each year in Eastern Massachusetts.
