WRITERS CLUB PRESENTS! WRITERS CLUB PRESENTS
The Quilt By Kali Laughlin
I splay the negative words out on a table,
Let people gaze upon its unpleasant exterior,
all those phrases thrown at me in anger and disgust
touch the roughness of each patch
and the ones my mind conjured up to accompany them,
sewn together by my inexperienced hands.
and pick them up piece by piece,
I have nothing to hide anymore
word by word,
because people will pry into my mind,
and slowly thread them together like fabric.
looking for the answer to all my insecurities,
A quilt of passive aggression and burning fury.
but add to the collection of hateful words when I’m honest.
A large, scratchy blanket of inadequacy and failure, too thin to keep me warm.
If I have nothing to hide, if I present my creation up front,
I wrap myself in it only for a moment
their words will dissipate on their tongues.
before I pull it off and hang it on a wall,
Their power they held over me will vanish.
a hideous piece of fabric hung up for anyone to see.
They’ll become another piece of the quilt
I will not cover myself in it,
and must stare their ugliness in the face.
for it will not keep me safe from the cold,
I have nothing to hide
but I will not hide it away from curious eyes.
and they have nothing to hide from it.
The world will see my tattered, ugly creation because I refuse to hide my pain.
