The Doorsill It’s Qingming again with its signature rain falls. This is the first time for me to observe the rain at my birthplace. With three days off work, I’m back here. I don’t seem to spend too much time in my hometown. Once upon a time, I used to come back to celebrate every traditional New Year even though we didn’t own a car to help with trails up hill. Nowadays, even with the newly paved roads and an automobile, I don’t go home as much, just like my solicitude for my hometown. Once again, I stood in front of the door. Looking at the narrow door sill, I couldn’t help with flashbacks. It was one morning couple years ago, I was only a baby. All I had was one pajama top that has a printed cartoon. I lay myself on the doorsill, trying to cross one of my feet to the other side. Grandpa was sitting in the master hall smoking. I was on the other side of the curtain formed by the raising smoke and I saw a smiley face. Grandma was over at the pound which wasn’t far away from the doorsill, calling my name. I guess it was time to clean my face. Day over day, all the same. Passing by the doorsill, entering the hall, you will see a red paper hanging vertically on the wall. It says “Heaven, Earth, Country, Family and Teacher.” Below the paper, there were several books lying on the table. Grandpa always kept book like this— books that are rare finds in the rural place. Couple of years ago, when I entered the hall, books went missing. Instead of books, there was a photo. Right above the photo, on the rim was a plaque with four big characters— Ever Green the Bamboo of Mothership. In 2013, I returned home alone. I spend entire three hours trip wondering if grandma would recognize me or not. Hadn’t been home for two years, I was much taller. Happy yet worried I was. Once I got to the door, I shouted “I’m back” as usual, as I walked in. The outer room was empty, only some noise of someone getting up coming from the inside. Entered the room, I found my grandma was trying to move to the side of the bed and putting on her shoes. I rushed to her side. Grandma looked at me in a daze. Just like I expected, she couldn’t recognize me. After my clarification, she grabbed my hands with joy, “You gained so much height.” That afternoon, she bustled around the house with delight and kept handing me snacks she wouldn’t treat herself with. I left the second day. Before I left, grandma stuffed my hands with pumpkins she grew in the backyard urging me to bring them back home for my parents. I couldn’t say no to her, so I accepted the pumpkins. What makes me wonder is why my grandma hasn’t moved away, given the house wasn’t particularly stable. Grandma would not leave this house, no matter whose advise is from. The suggestion can be from my aunt who lived nearby, or my uncle who lived in town, or my parents who lived in the city. She insisted to stay here and cook us the best home food with simple cookware whenever we decided to come back. It wasn’t easy to live on the hill among wild animals and bugs. It’s said that grandma killed two snakes in the master hall when she lived there. Two years past, today, right now, I’m back home again. The door was locked. There was an extra photo on the table. The rain went back and force between heavy and light. We had to do some extra preparation before we head out up hill. One more time, I stood in front of the doorsill with my dad standing next to me. He told me in a slow fashion that he used to lie on the doorsill as a kid.

We have to do some rest in front of our house and prepare the supplies for going up the mountain. I stood at the threshold again, with my father by my side. He said to me slowly, “I used to play here when I was a child.”. I was stunned and replied, “me too.”. My father looked at me and stopped talking. I was startled then I replied with “so did I.” Dad glanced at me ended the conversation with silence. History seems to repeat itself. The following month after my visit to grandma two years ago, me and my dad stand in front of the doorsill in a similar manner. My dad standing, couldn’t hold up his tears wetting white silk he was wearing. I knelt aside my dad saw a shelf was being structured into the coffin. Besides me were relatives, all in white, kneeling. Someone tried to force my dad to bend his knee since my dad was the only one who was standing. Tears never stopped falling. My dad didn’t even turn his head around. He just replied, “I need to watch this.” I guess with my knee touching the ground, head low, all I can see is the ground. Eventually, I couldn’t withhold my tears either. I wish I could watch my grandma leave as well. I never expected to witness my grandma peacefully fall asleep forever on my way hurried back from the city. Later, I came across my father’s memoir, which was all about grandma. Only then did I realize how difficult my grandma’s life was. My father wrote that when he was a child, there was not enough food for the family. My grandmother secretly planted some loofahs. After being discovered, people took the shelf down and pulled out the seedlings. Grandma was ready to risk her life to fight for her crops. In order to feed my dad, she even robed food. For the family, grandma ignored her reputation. I happen to know that she lost her newborn second and fourth child. For that, she cried for a long time. Putting pieces together, I finally realized why my grandma insisted to watch after this house. She wanted my family to stay together. She wanted my family members to have a sweet home to come back to. She wanted. She waited. She peeped outside of the door. She checked the calendar over and over again. She hoped that one day her grandchild would come back to her. She hoped that one day, her child would come back to taste the greens she planted in the backyard that she hesitated to have. Father wrote about the day of burial. It was a rainy day, yet, the rain stopped when we made to the top of the hill. A rainbow appeared after the ceremony. My dad took a photo of it. On our way back, clouds cleared up. Afternoon sun shined on the cloud displaying extreme beauty. It may not be my grandma’s spirit. The scene left a beautiful thought for her children. At the end of my dad’s memoir, he wrote,” When mom left us, evening sunshine dazzled the sky.” It has been countless times I passed the doorsill. I recall the rice noodles cooked by my grandma, my grandpa’s cigarettes, and hands held mine tightly every time I am back here. Without all those, once or twice when I come back, all I have are nine incense sticks to lit. I guess it was the same for my dad. I wonder what would happen in the next two years. The doorsill may get shortened by the wind. Maybe the house will be gone leaving the doorsill standing alone in the wind. I wonder. My dad may have stronger emotions for this doorsill that observed two generations. It endured changes each time we pass by it. Each time, we get different insights. However emotionless one maybe, one should feel the grief facing a farewell like this. Grief may come second. Most importantly, we should hold our original intention and thoughts before and after we cross that doorsill. I want to see the same dazzling sunshine one day just like how my dad noted.

华风杂志社 When people are judging Ph.D. students, people believe Ph.D. students are hard on themselves. People who decide to study biochemistry have a lot of determinations. Initially, I just wanted to try to apply for a Ph.D. program. But, I was lucky enough to be accepted. For new Ph.D. students, I want to introduce something about Ph.D. and talk about some widespread misunderstandings and stereotypes about Ph.D. students. By the way, I am studying in a science Ph.D. program and there are differences from other fields, such as arts and business Ph.D. programs. Therefore, my introduction is only valid for science Ph.D. programs. Ph.D. is an abbreviation of Doctor of Philosophy. Philosophy is not the philosophy studied by Aristotle but is the theoretical basis of knowledge. Ph.D. students are to research and discover some new theories. The primary flow path of Ph.D. programs is taking classes during the first two years, and then being teaching assistants or graduate assistants to get paid. Alternatively, Ph.D. students can get some fellowship as their financial support. In the second year, there is a Ph.D. Candidacy Examination. Students who pass this exam will be identified as Ph.D. candidates. Then they focus on their projects and write a thesis. The thesis is approved and published in papers. Finally, Ph.D. candidates will be awarded a Ph.D. degree. After earning a Ph.D. degree, some Ph.D. students will become Post-doctors. After that, they can become associate professors and be in the academic field; some prefer working in companies or industries since Ph.D. students learned a lot of techniques, and they accumulated knowledge; they can solve some unexpected issues. Misunderstanding 1: It takes 5 or more years to get a Ph.D. degree. You guys really like studying, and I can never be a student for so many years. Clarification: Ph.D. students are required to take some classes in the first two years, but they don’t need to take a lot, because Ph.D. students need time to do research and work as teaching assistants. Classes are only for Ph.D. students to learn something they probably need for their research. Of course, the levels are hard, and they have to receive a grade better than B to pass this class. The Ph.D. program is more like a job. After finishing the first two years’ classes, they don’t need to take exams like undergraduates, and master students do. They only need to do research and produce some knowledge. At the rest of the time in the Ph.D. program, they go to labs at 9 am and get home at 5 pm, if needed, they also need to go to labs during weekends or holidays. The way Ph.D. students learn something new is not by taking classes but from trouble-shooting.
Misunderstanding 2: the Ph.D. program requires a degree of Master, right? I feel you have to spend a long time in school. Clarification: Not really. You can apply for a Ph.D. program after earning a Bachelor’s degree. Of course, you can use a Ph.D. if you have a degree of Master. In general, it takes five years to get a Ph.D. degree. But it depends. Some people might produce some significant papers, and they might earn a Ph.D. degree within three and a half years. Some Ph.D. students are assigned extremely hard topics so they might graduate after seven years or longer. I heard a news about an unlucky Ph.D. student studying asteroids. She finished data analysis and began to write her paper. However, at that time, the asteroid collided with another asteroid and was destroyed. Her study was meaningless, and her writing would not be accepted. As a result, she needed to restart her studies or give up. Stereotype: Do people who get a Ph.D. degree look like a nerd and weirdo? Clarification: Indeed, doing research in a lab for a long time, and a Ph.D. student could not get too many opportunities to interact with people and improve social skills. It is a personal choice. Some people chase in-depth knowledge, so they tend to focus on research and be professional in academics, but they will not have time to socialize; some people are unsatisfied to only work in the lab, and they will seek more opportunities to develop themselves. Personally, in my first day of being a Ph.D. student, I talked to my advisor about it. He said, “Yes, it is a dilemma that all Ph.D. students have. You should not limit yourself. And that’s why you are required to attend a seminar and be a TA. In my personal experience, a lot of Ph.D. students are normal, even more normal than ordinary people. For example, some Ph.D. students are good at cooking; some decorate their homes like a museum; some are good at sports. But, regular people will never get attention. And those abnormal and weird people, only a few, can significantly draw others’ attention and form stereotypes.

The Fear of the Wall Author /Yuwan Translator/ Wenjia Cao Design /CC , Bingchen Zhao “The greatest meaning in the ‘fall of the Berlin Wall’ is that, ever since, one can observe the flow of the crowd. At that moment, debates no longer exists. The flow of crowds is the flow of history.”

Duran-Espino’s voice was shaking, and her eyes started to blink faster. “I am forever grateful for them. I did my best at schools, and I have been working really hard because I want to do something in return. I love them so much for being brave enough to do this for the family. I would never be able to go through what they went through. I can’t imagine the difficulties they went through, or the challenges they faced. To name a few, language barriers, culture shock and prejudice from the society. You know, we are from a foreign land with brown colored skin.” As parents, they devoted a lot to their family and their children, for example, risk everything they had and cross the broader. “People cross the border to escape and to pursue. If it wasn’t the unbearable living condition, no one would choose to leave their homeland. Why would anyone want to abandon their home?” She had her brows squeezed.
Nineteen-year-old Margarita has a pair of brown eyes with long lashes. She woreworn an oatmeal colored sweater that day. I handed her a cup of bubble tea that I just purchased and told her that I am grateful that she agreed to meet with me. She smiled back at me, as gentle as a piece of red-brown colored falling leaf outside of the window.
Mining, farming and livestock raising traditionally has been supporting Sonora’s economy. Due to its proximity to the UnitedUnites States, Sonora has also experienced growth in manufacturing and tourism. Despite the growing economy, its citizens still suffer from poorness and insecurity. “I think the wall is not good. It is not good for anyone, and it’s a waste of money.” Duran-Espino says. “Like any wall mentioned in history, it will not solve any problem.”
About four hours’ drive south of Tucson, Arizona, in the northwestern part of Mexico, lies a splendid backcountry called San Luis Rio Colorado of Sonora. This is where Margarita’s story started. Like so many border towns, San Luis Rio Colorado is a tourist resort. This town observes its Mexican-American culture and trades made between two countries. “Nothing can compare to my hometown food. They are SO tasty. ” Her brightened voice was so clear.
The Great Wall of China is to separate and prevent from the invaders outside the wall, so it’s a defensive mechanism. The Berlin-Wall in Germany is designed to isolate the east Berlin from the outside world, so it’s a boundary mark. In fact, neither of the walls created by bright ancient civilization protected their own kingdom they belong to. Let alone most breaking down of a great nation always starts with inside. Most of the walls in history end up as tourism attractions in 21st century.
Margarita Duran-Espino’s parents were born in this town. They were nourished and grew up in Sonora until they get married. It all happened in 1989.
If the world was a cubic, building a wall to separate two countries apart would be the same as push over the cubic. The other side now faces up, however, the shape of a cubic still remains.
The decline in value of Peso, the inability to pay the debts to non-U.S. banks, and the falling price of oil, as factors, sank the Mexican economy in 80s. Furthermore, including murders, smuggling, armed attack, and drug warehouse, the occurrence of frequent crimes deteriorates the living environment in Mexico. “The life wasn’t fit for raising a family there,” Duran-Espino said this while her eyes looking down, and her hands clasping together. Her parents, therefore, just like the most of Mexican immigrants, decide to cross the border in order for their children.
The proposal of the wall from President Trump has so far added political complexity and internal crises only.
Margarita Duran-Espino was born in the U.S. She travels back to the Mexico with her mother once a year to visit their relatives. As a U.S. citizen, after traveling so many times between two countries, she yet still holds a fear. “After Trump became the president, I am scared. I am scared to go to the custom, to present my birth certificate. What if that’s not enough to proof that I am a US. citizen, what if they won’t let me come back into US. I didn’t know what I would do. I’m just scared.” She also told me it is hard for her to imagine how scared other Mexican would be without proper documents. With two hundred dollars in their pockets and a car, the married couple drove up to the mid-part of Oregon. They were here without any help, no government welfare, no food stamps or assisted housing. The husband started his work early in the morning and another in the late nights. Meanwhile, the wife tried to help as much as possible until the pregnancy.
Throughout the history, no wall ever completely or permanently achieved its goal, no matter the size of the wall or degree of consolidation. Human beings will find ways to transcend any wall, whether above, below, or through it. One citizen’s hope for its country is somewhat similar to one’s hope in the God. The hope may excite us because one country has the power to save its people. People expect the government to do something. People desires a leader who truly cares about the country. Margarita said. As a Mexican, he or she hopes someone will show up with wide shoulder and firm eyes when the country is in trouble. He or she hopes that someone will pull the country out of misery and lead the country to a promise land. That someone, maybe, is the God for this country. At this moment, someone can be a God when people are truly desperate. The real impact of the unbuilt wall is unknown, but the fear is spreading. People may not expect anything from its country, but the hope still exists. Whether the wall will bring people a surprise or just countless families falling apart, no one knows.
